Matthews on Bush

Talking about Bush with Coulter, Tweety utters this:

MATTHEWS:  Well, how could he be so right, in your light, by your lights, on that war, which was a very unusual decision—most presidents wouldn‘t have made that gutsy decision to go into…

Most Presidents wouldn’t have let the VP (Cheney) make most policy decisions in their administration. It wasn’t a gutsy decision—it was an insane one crafted by the neocons. And how is that “gutsy” move working out?

Update: Here’s the correct email to Hardball: hardball@msnbc.com  (h/t Glenn)

How is the plan working out? Exactly how they wanted it to. Haliburton and others are stealing billions of our tax dollars with more and more on the way. They want it as long and drawn out as possible. Does anyone think there was more to the “plan” than that? Ok also the free oil….;)

And who is going to make the “gusty decision” to bring the troops home from the Boosh crime family and their war for oil? If the Repuglithugs want war then let them start the draft and see how well that goes over with the American public.

4

It is very “gutsy” to send other people into war. Very “gutsy” Mr. Matthews.

We need a nice old draft, let the American people feel the burden of the war close to home Hoorahh!

Matthews is obsessed with notions of masculinity. Bush wasn’t brave, he was stupid and reckless - and easily and happily led.

Yet here’s our national discourse being shaped again by stupid people with stupid hang-ups.

Only a “real man” can send people off to war over lies.

On the war profiteering part, they are successful and making out like the thieves and bandits that they are. On the bringing democracy and freedom to Iraq part, well they shit and fell in it.

I think it’s gutsy of Matthews to lick Coulters balls like that on national TV. I guess he got a christmas wish early.

Unless “gutsy” means from the gut and not the brain. Maybe Tweety is onto something (or on something). Maybe Tweety means the pResident is stupid to blunder into a war based on nothing more than his “gut instinct” (or believe the liars who talked him into it).
Either way, they are both idiots - bush and tweety.

12
LongTooth Says:

That’s about right. Bush, like Patton, is eminently worthy of the nickname, “Old Blood and Guts”, i.e., the GI’s blood, his guts. The difference being Patton was competent.

13
Bic Says:

“Big boned” is a way of saying someone you love or care about is fat (dinosaurs are big boned)

“Gutsy” is a way of saying someone you love or care about is foolish.

If you’d like to think the Bush Crime family is about to come crumbling down, well…
1. Iraq is not a failure according to the goals of PNAC.
2. We are one catalyzing event from dictatorship.

The NBC nightly news just “covered” the issue, if that word is appropriate. They spent half the time showing camera shots of the Edwards campaign website suggesting they are benefiting from the Coulter shots. Yeah, urging death for a candidate and fund raising are the same thing, 50-50, whats the fuss? Haaaaaaaaaaa.

No context provided as to Coulters long history of inflammatory rhetoric. Sad sad sad.

Just found this article about payday lending via Buckeye State Blog. I’m having a bit of a rough week and am not up to doing any serious blogging, but please don’t let my inability to do an effective “sales job” on the link keep you from reading it. It’s an important issue that deserves wider attention.

Big Mitch Says:

On August 25. 2007, I blogged about Ann Coulter in The very definition of crazy. Here’s the excerpt:

Think back, if you are old enough, to the time when they showed a cartoon before the movies. Sure, Betty Boop had some creative horsepower behind it, but it was not what brought people into the theaters week after week. What the cartoons did was this: they shifted the boundaries of reality. Theater, including cinema, requires that the folks in the audience willingly suspend disbelief. For something like a cartoon, it is an easy sell, because they are comedic. Then, when the main feature comes on, the shift is toward a more real representation, and so, the feature movie is more emotionally engaging.
Ms. Coulter is the Daffy Duck of political discourse. When she speaks, you shake your head and wonder if you really heard what you thought you heard. Then when someone on Faux News comes on and says, “we must fight the terrorists in Iraq, so we don’t fight them here,” it sounds like the voice of sweet reason. Compared to daffy Ann Coulter, it is so much easier to accept the talking head, who in this analogy might be compared to, say, Orson Wells’ War of the Worlds.
Why the War of the Worlds? Because some people believe it and do batshit crazy stuff.

Today, on Chris Matthews’ Hardball we see the proof of what I was saying.

Armstrong Williams was talking about Ann Coulter’s appearance yesterday on his show. For those who missed it, she was confronted by Elizabeth Edwards, who gently rebuked her for hateful speech. Ms. Coulter had alleged that John Edwards has a bumper sticker which says, “Ask me about my dead son.” As the mother of that deceased boy, Mrs. Edwards found it offensive.

Armstrong Williams, for those who missed it, used to be on the White House’s payroll as a propagandist, which is criminal. Chris Matthews asked Williams if thought it was “over the line” to attack the Edwards for having a bumper sticker that says, “Ask me about my dead boy.” Armstrong said, “no.” Why? Because he believed the Edwards actually had such a bumper sticker.

That was my point when I said, “some people believe it and do batshit crazy stuff.” For those who missed it.

“… and tell ’em Big Mitch sent ya!”

A gutsy decision or acutely incompetent and it isn’t how you tilt the pinball machine or shake the 8-ball…it’s how you pretend that spin means it’s okay to simply lie.

FOX news doesn’t really do conservative news, not more that it simply does outright, dishonest lies.

BUT than I guess if you measure the fact that Bush and Cheney knew they were cooking intelligence, the “gutsy decision” was just to see if Americans would cared that both Cheney and Bush could lie, with intent to do so, about the evidence for war, without ever being label criminal. Yeah, it’s a “gutsy decision” to rob a bank too.

35
Andy K Says:

The decision to go to war was about as gutsy as Tweety’s comment pertainin’ to said decision. Rather to say, not gutsy at all.

Clinton made a gutsy decision when, in the face of an unsupportive populace and Congress, committed US forces to haltin’ genocide in the rapidly disintegratin’ Yugoslavia. Whether those campaigns would be effective or not, Clinton could not know at the time- but he did know that the campaigns were completely justified.

On the grounds of haltin’ Saddam’s genocide against the the Kurds and the Shi’a Bush might have built a reasonably justifiable argument to invade Iraq. Bushco took the easy way out by playin’ not to the sense of outrage at Saddam’s treatment of his own people, but rather raisin’ the bogus bogie-men WMD and Saddam’s links to al Quaeda (less than one year after the events of 9/11, iirc). That’s not guts. It’s political expediency.

Let me ask this. What good has it done to write, telephone, email MSNBC about the so called “journalism” practiced by the likes ot Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, Tucker Carlson et al? No matter how much pressure the people put on the mainstream media nothing changes. It’s still the same talking points and Republican spin. How much more can the people tolerate before the gates of the Bastille are stormed?

37
RayC Says:

In my mind when someone talks about making a “gutsy decision” if would involve doing the right thing despite all the pressure to do the easy thing. A “gutsy decision” would involve doing whats best overall and the long range prospects of good in the future. Bush’s decision to attack Iraq WAS the easy decision. They very much knew who was going to benefit and who was going to lose it was not for the benefit of the Iraqi people. They also knew that they were going to get a short term political boost, that is the main reason they planned it and went forward before the inspectors finished. Perpetual war for perpetual peace is not a “gutsy” foreign policy.

RobertD Says:

It’s interesting that Matthews uses the word “gutsy” in this situation. I notice neither he nor anyone else ever has the “guts” to have a live or in-studio interview with Coulter when there’s a dissenting voice in the room. Wouldn’t it be “gutsy”–and interesting–to have, say, Elizabeth Edwards, Maxine Waters, Cindy Sheehan, or Randi Rhoades on to respond to Coulter and maybe generate a few points of their own, right there sitting next to each other.

Matthews doesn’t have either the skills as a moderator or the cajones for that. One thing’s for sure, though: Ann Coulter probably wouldn’t be making too many “fat thighs” comments sitting right next to one of these women. Her little black dress wouldn’t be worth much protection.

This is why the immediate break up of the media should be at the top of the list of the Congressional agenda which is to make repairs caused by previous administrations.

Then, and only then, can the common wo/man speak and regain a voice in the public square. This game, which is completely ginned up by the GW Botch crowd is currently tilted in favor of the money, not our great nation and the people who slave away everyday here for nothing that will help their children in the future!!!

A few years ago I had a room mate that loved “wraslin” it was in the hay day of names like “King Kong Bundy” “Hulk Hogan” and “Macho man Savage” so for a brief time I followed the show. I liked the interviews the best because they would get so deep into caricature and you never knew what crazy bull shit they would come up with. I believe that Coulter and to a somewhat lesser degree O’Reilly are filling that morbid need in many people. They cant wait to see what crazy bull shit they will come up with next. They are caricatures of real people. I think of the number of people that watch are read them, a good percentage just watch like I watched “wraslin”. More a kin to watching a car wreck than anything political.

I would like to see our current President and Vice President be supportive of more international affairs that affect our place in this world. We should not forget the commitment made towards the U.N. Millennium Goals (a pact of ending extreme world hunger by the year 2025) in 2000. According to The Borgen Project, an annual $19 billion dollars is needed to eliminate half of the extreme poverty affecting the world by the year 2015. To my sense, it is almost unacceptable to have spent so far more than $340 billion in Iraq only, when we have more than war immunities to change the world and eliminate poverty.

Write, or better yet, call their advertisers. I’ve found that writing a letter to Hardball is like throwing it in the garbage can. I doubt if they’re even read; those folks simply don’t care. Advertisers, though, when enough people politely but firmly insist a show’s bias or bigotry is impacting the advertised product’s image, sometimes put pressure on the network to actually make a change. Enough people have to be persistent though, but that’s the best chance you have.

Gutsy doesn’t always have positive connotations. Gutsy means it takes nerves. Hitler was Gutsy; so were the 9/11 attackers (in addition to brave)

Give Chris Matthews a break, anyone who actually watches the show knows he’s clearly against this war and George Bush.
