FOXNews reporter Courtney Keely reports from Baghdad that the surge is working. Really, it is. Don’t pay attention to the fact that she’s in a Baghdad market surrounded by MORE security than John McCain and every Iraqi she speaks to tells her about the death and destruction all around them.
I mean, c’mon, don’t let the reality of the situation get in the way of a good cheerleading segment for Bush’s policies.

Just like walking in a country-side market in Indiana.
she looks safe…no…really
Wow! What incredible progress! Let’s hear it for the surge!
Well, doesn’t everyone don full body armor, a helmet and have numerous armed guards to do a bit of shopping at the local farmers market? How stupid do these people think we are? Oh, wait, it’s Faux-never mind.
You haven’t done it, Courtney, because Pox News has never been so desperate to catapult the propaganda.
Just look at yourself, you idiot.
You have got to be kidding.
“More boots on the ground than McCain… Blackhawks circling overhead.” … “The Sunni side remains shuttered. Most of the Sunnis have been killed or fled…” … “This man says he fears being killed as soon as he leaves the market.”
Pardon me, but that doesn’t sound like “Life returning to Bagdad” to me. That sounds more like one tiny, heavily guarded public space full of a handful of terrified people and a whole BUNCH of foreign guys with guns. I’m glad for the people who do business there that there haven’t been any massive car bomb attacks in the last six months, but you’ve got to be pretty dang pessimistic to call THAT success of any sort.
Anywhere else in the world short of maybe North Korea on a bad day, that would be more accurately referred to as hell.
There is so much security in the market (troops and helicopters overhead) that stall owners feel safer in the market than outside of it.
Sure the surge is working Faux. Keep reporting the bullshit. The morons who watch you will surely believe you - after all, they live in a faith-based world!
What? Where’s her latte and five rugs for five bucks? Christ, who believes this shit any more? OT but MSNBC says Mitten Romney won the Iowa staw poll. Now please someone out there tell me how the straw poll works? Participants have to pay 35 bucks to Vote? Romney bused his folks in and then paid their 35 bucks? Other RNC said they couldn’t afford to do that. So…WTF of course Romney is going to win. Seriously what is this about? And please tell me democrats don’t do this?
I guess they answered their own question. how disturbing is it that the only thing that causes it to be seen that way is the caption?
We have become Badhdad Bob.
I had to turn it off - it’s such bullshit. Is she kidding? This is no way to live. To be decked out in all that armor surrounded by troops and think everything’s okay ??!! It’s just bullshit. (1984)
so, i guess the objective of the suuuuurge would be to literally cover every square inch of Iraq with american soldiers? yeah that would work, but it would maybe they should have thought of that 4 years ago
What outfit is that she’s wearing.
The Giorgio Armani Flack jacket with Kelver head wear and Stuart Weitzman Jackboots?
Good lord! I just looked up the word Orwellian in my online dictionary and this very same video clip was one of the definitions. All I can say is good thing I own that plot of acreage within sprinting distance of the Canadian border.

AMES, Iowa - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won an easy and expected victory in a high-profile Iowa Republican Party Straw Poll on Saturday, claiming nearly twice as many votes as his nearest rival.
YAYY!!! WE WINNN!!!!
YAYYYY!!!!!
/republicans can blow me
i think the lesson here, for FOX, is don’t talk to Iraqi’s or show your reporter in ARMOR when trying to make the case that the Surge is working.
I’m completely dumbfounded. A small sign of progress for whom? These poor people are starting to eek out a life despite us completely trashing their country, and she has the nerve to give us credit for it?
That was disturbing on so many levels
The cognitive dissonance of those who claim that the “surge” (escalation really, we should call it that) is showing signs of progress is breathtaking.
so a successful surge will require a 24/7, never-ending, massive military presence on the ground and in the air? That sounds more desperate than successful to me. Or is that the newest definition for “success in Iraq”?
It’s like guarding and blocking New York City in a time of war, guarding bridges, tunnels, setting check points all over the city boroughs while the war and terror rages all over the country and then claiming that the US nation is safe and secured. Or Washington if you prefer that analogy. But why would you prefer that. Anyway, secured city means nothing if it makes up a sub percent of the total nation’s area. Every American who wouldn’t have lived in NYC or DC would find such an approach idiotic, criminal, shameless and inhumane. Thus the American people would like to apologize to the non-Baghdad residents for the Democratic Congress and our collective crimes in general brought upon you for the last 4 years. Again, we are truly sorry.
She sounded like she was 18.
Republicans/Fox are blind and dumb.
L.A. Confidential @ 15:
Money well spent by Willard Mitt Romney. The only way he can get votes it to buy them.
Another big point that needs to be repeatedly made: This straw poll with ~14k votes cast is only 2/3 of the ~23k of the votes cast in the last straw poll is something that should really trouble the GOP.
without all that armor and that wall military, we’d be staring at two smoking leg stumps.
nice try fox, that skit sucked.
Ozymandias @ 23:
And irretrievably stupid. WTF was that slitting of the throat thing she pulled with the old man that was worried about his family? Oy.
There is so much more to Iraq than the market she went to. Even if the market were relatively safe, her interviewees indicated they were afraid of being killed outside the market. Even if that neighborhood were safe, there is still the rest of Baghdad. Even if Baghdad were safe, there is still the rest of Iraq.
I suspect they are just squeezing the insurgents out of one area and into other areas. It’s like squeezing one end of a balloon and having the opposite end bulge out.
Faux needs to brush up on their propaganda skills. They’re slipping.
Unfortunately, you have to know something about the world to understand that reporters can usually work in an urban war zone without body armor and a small army.
The Propaganda Ministry: flush with cash, power and ruthlessness, sure….but smart? Not so much.
Did she just do a John Mcain? It is amazing that FOX news still thinks it can sell this bullshit.
I’m surprised that she didn’t play up the open-air aspect of the market, noting that there’s a ‘pleasant downplaying of the hard boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces’ provided by the fact that all the buildings have had their facias blown off. It would be a selling point in any American city, and SO European…
I especially love that at the bottom of the screen they’ve eschewed their usual “statement in the form of a question” with: The surge, is it working! Bwahaha
ahhhh…Baghdad…the new cruise ship vacation destination….Perhaps I’ll book my seats on Monday…they say the water is lovely this time of year.
Bwahahaha! If I wanted to do irony, I couldn’t do any better than this. She’s honest in everything she reports though… only her analysis is majorly flawed (or skewed). It sounds to me like her ‘analysis’ (!) is but a way of getting her report through the stupid Fox filtering Gestapo agents.
mudshark @ 35:
Yeah, pack batteries too.
But I hear Lonely Planet’s filming a special for the travel channel right now!
Baghdad, where every night is the fourth of July.
Newspeak dictionary entries:
Quagmire = Progress
Failure = Success
Fox learned from the best, Orwell. Poor old Orwell was only trying to warn of the future, now our present.
All the pharmaceutical ads suggest Huxley was also as prescient.
tell me she’s fucking kidding, right……… who believes such stupid shit……Fox News Viewers?????
At first I thought this was a clip from Fox’s Half Hour News Hour. Of course they don’t show the people when they leave the market fearing for their lives — and if they’re lucky enough to make it home alive they have the pleasure of sitting down to dine on rotten food and and washing it down with putrid water without so much as a fan to cool them in the 130 degree heat because there’s no electricity. The splurge is going swimmingly.
Saigon was never that bad for reporters. Never. Think about that.
“The ones who complain about being afraid of dying are only a fraction of what they once were. We can’t find any of those people to talk to us right now, but as long as we show you pictures of people not complaining then they must think that the surge is working by default, right?”
I so sincerely hate fox news.
You know, this could almost be a parody of Fox News by The Daily Show. I can’t wait until Aasif Mandvi gets his mitts on this.
strawberry @ 27:
It means “Killed by Al-Qaida” in sign language. Anyway, since that lady clearly didn’t understand the Iraqi tongue, she did it purely to reassure the Fox viewers about the Al-Qaida presence in Iraq which is sick in it own right.
Just think how peachy keen everything would be had Bush not bombed the living shit out of Iraq in the first place.
forestyan @ 36:
I was wondering that myself. And somehow, it made it onto television. What does that tell us about either a) the intelligence of the Fox editors or b) how intelligent the Fox editors think their viewers are?
I don’t know about the Fox News viewer, but I personally didn’t come away from that video ready to book a shopping spree in Baghdad.
What part of “just last week a bomb ripped through this market killing 74 people” would lead the Faux audience….oh never mind..
Pet peeve.
It wasn’t Groucho, or Harpo, or Zeppo Marx, that delivered the line to Margaret DuMont:
“Who ya a gonna believe, me, or your own eyes?”
But CHICO Marx.
Chico Marx.
Believe me, or don’t, but here it is from Duck Soup at the 01:27 to 01:36 mark.
Who ya gonna believe….
That being said, ironically enough, this is the most unvarnished and honest reporting I’ve ever seen on Fox “News”.
To her credit, it doesn’t look like Courtney is putting lipstick on a pig here.
Not that that will ever register with the average Fox “News” viewer that can’t tell the difference between Karl, and/or, Groucho Marx.
~Nyc
…..and the sad part is that Fox News viewers didn’t even see the helmet, kevlar vest….or the security force as far as the eye could see……then to top that off, ordinary Iraqi citizens telling stories about missing family members….every gd one of them……WHAT A FUCKING SUCCESS!!! …..while all the inbred, knuckle-dragging, trailer trash Fox News viewers are wondering what the fuck is wrong with 75% of the nation…….incredible!!!
since David Asmin took over the documentary dept. Fox has become ever more Pravdaish
Terry @ 41:
In 68 during the Tet Offensive things got a little sketchy and in 72-73 thing got even worse…But your right….things were not as bad as Baghdad is now.
Damn, that clip looked like something off Comedy Central! For some reason Jon Stewart’s voice wasn’t in the background though.
It’s beyond anything Orwell
