Bush Vetoes SCHIP

Not at all unexpected...but I like Pastor Dan's take on it:
Apparently, there are no depths to which Pres. Bush cannot sink. This morning, he chose the health of health care executives over that of poor children. There is no reason to veto the SCHIP legislation other than blind ideology. If you weren't convinced yet that Bush lacks the milk of human kindness, you should be now.
The man has made himself lower than a jackal.
Bill Scher's got the right idea: don't let this veto be quiet. The only thing I'd add is, pray for these bastards' souls. They're going to need it.
President Bush got a much less warm welcome in Pennsylvania than I think he anticipated. Senators Reid, Leahy, Dodd, Kennedy also have their say.

Why don't y'all move on up here to Canada? It's better up here.
Scumbag remains true to his nature. His nature would be psychopath/sociopath/misanthrope.
bob @ 1:
Thinking about it as are about half of the americans living under Bush's nightmare. Canada is a beautiful country and Bush is taking this one down the tubes with him. That's what we get for putting a psychiatrically compromised individual into office. Now we all get to suffer the consequences of his mental illness.
It goes without saying that just about anywhere would be better than it is in this country right now with this corrupt, capricious, ill-fated administration.
I for one am against socialized health care so I'm glad president Bush vetoed this bill. No money to pay for this anyway.
Manbearpig @ 5:
Sure there is, just divert the money from the military. Instead of taking lives, we will be saving lives.
bob @ 1:
I don't speak French and my 10 years of IT management isn't a desired skillset for your country that's obviously full of french speakers and IT managers....
yes, I tried the legal route of migration north but those two requirements (needed one of the two) were not met, and I was denied. Calgary will have to wait.
Manbearpig @ 5:
I'm curious...what is it that bothers you about socialized health care?
Are you against the V.A. treating veterans' health needs? Are you against Medicare serving the elderly? We already have these programs...why should poor children be made to suffer just because their parents are poor? A lot of these families would not be able to eat if they paid for health insurance. Or pay rent. And God forbid something catastrophic happen to anyone of the family.
And if you don't think you will end up paying for these kids' health issues in the long run, you are just lying to yourself. YOU ARE PAYING NOW.
bob @ 1:
You're no Canadian! We would destroy your beautiful country.
dothehop @ 6:
I believe the money for SCHIP was going to come from cigarette taxation. And medicare is socialized medicine..care to call that a failed program?
Manbearpig @ 5:
Instead of being glad he vetoed this bill, instead be outraged into action for what he is spending your money on.
Okay, Democrats, Bush has just pitched the softest slowball you could possibly ever ask for.
The veto will likely stand, the Obstructicons being who they are, BUT...
You now have a crystal clear issue: what's a better use of our money? Insuring our kids, or pouring it down the Iraq sinkhole? Forget us vs them, what about YOU? What are YOUR priorities, voters?
You should be able to bang this drum all the way to next November.
So, here's the thing, before you start falling all over yourselves to apologize to Bush for offending his free-market ideology and before you move on to putting Rush Limbaugh on the soon-to-be-minted $3 bill, consider that you may, and I'm just spitballing here, call me crazy, but you may want to consider possibly looking into maybe attacking the Republicans with this.
Identify the swing voters and the NAY votes with the weakest home town support.
Run ads. Now.
Call Bush out on the "slippery slope to socialized medicine" thing. The only way this could possibly be a slippery slope to anything is if Bush is afraid it's going to be effective and popular. If it's NOT popular, it'll die when it comes up for renewal.
Call him on that. He's telling the American people that his ideology means more to him than their clear, bipartisan demand. And why, according to him? Because the program won't work? No, because it WILL and he's afraid it'll make capitalism LOOK bad.
He's sacrificing children's lives on the altar of "free market" medicine.
Take the game to his supporters, not to him. He's deaf, blind and stupid on this and everything else. Forget him. He'll obstruct until he's removed.
But attack his base. Attack them. Attack, attack, attack, in the name of everything you say you believe in, attack.
You've lost me on war funding. I'll not vote for another Democrat until they earn it back.
Here's where you start.
whadda bastard
Fran Taylor @ 9:
Yours and our corporations are working hard on that.
May his heatless soul be miserable for the rest of his fu*king life.
I wish I could revoke his health care, send him to Iraq with no body armor or bullets, wiretap all his conversations and post them online, send him to Gitmo for 5 years with no explanation, taser the hell out of him, and tie him up, waterboard him, and drop him in a oil well. Stupid bastard.
This is not socialized healthcare!! this is paying for POOR KIDS!
Captain Kangaroo @ 17:
Technically, that's socialized healthcare.
George Bush doesn't like black people.
wait....what?
George Bush doesn't like children. But the 'childrens' can learn.
There's no money for childrens healthcare. We need that money to murder brown people and steal their oil.
Manbearpig @ 5:
You are paying for the health care of the uninsured already, as hospitals pass the cost of their unpaid bills on to you. I'd rather insure people and pay for their regular doctor's visits than pay for trips to the emergency room, which is their only current way to get health care.
If Jesus came back to Earth now for his Second Coming, it is unlikely that he would descend on the wings of angels. He would probably enter the world the same way he did last time, born into a somewhat poor family. If that family happened to be a poor American family, then there is a good chance that Jesus's Second Coming will be curtailed by his 4th birthday due to his family's lack of health insurance and an unusually high infant mortality rate for a developed country.
Oh well, I guess we will just have to wait another millennium or so.
Christian nation indeed.
Control the message:
George Bush and the GOP hates poor and middle class children.
Impeach the MF'er for Christ's sake!
'Childrens' can learn.
Manbearpig @ 5:
How is having a doctor help you when you're sick different from having the fire dept show up when your house is burning or the cops help you when you need them?
You're against socialized fire and law enforcement systems too?
Cheers.
President Bush is so scared to give healthcare to children. What a misguided fool. The next time a child dies because he or she cannot get proper healthcare, then remember who the person is who sanctioned their murder.
Let's face it, this is no surprise. Bush prefers murder by proxy - soldiers dying in an illegal war, sanctions against countries that cause deaths of thousands, deaths of mother in childbirth, the list goes on and on. Bush is not a religious man. Bush (and the political machine) may claim to be religious, but his actions indicate a completely different story. In reality, Bush is in favor of killing, chaos, stealing. breaking laws and defiling of our constitution. He is very good at that, too, and this is what history will judge him on.
41 days in Iraq would pay for this.
It is supposed to be paid with a cigarette tax.
Dubya had so much fun murdering children in Iraq that now he wants to murder some children in America.
JasonS is right man. Attack you Dems attack! Use Bush's lack of humanity and compassion to render his party and him pariah...they will become toxic and will be quarantined!!!
Captain Kangaroo @ 27:
Amazingly Brilliant Perspective. Why can't that be the Dems talking point?
Manbearpig @ 5:
We can't afford not to pay for this. If we deny poor children preventive care because of lack of health coverage and they get sicker, then we all end up paying more for their eventual emergency room visit. Also, saying that socialized medicine is inherently bad is purely ideological argument, which is the only basis anyone has for being against the expansion of this program. If people only thought in practical terms, they would realize how badly Bush has f**ked up this country.
You don't like how things are now?
Expect better tomorrow?
Suggest instead you look for the exit.
When the Bill comes up again for consideration by U.S. House and Senate..and it will
within next two weeks, it is rather assured that there are sufficient votes in the Senate
to override his veto...the problem is in the U.S. House. Approx. 9 Dems initially voted
against this Bill, so they(first) are the ones needing to be identified and swamped with
calls/mail/emails from their respective constitutents. There is needed 24 to 25 MORE
votes in the U.S. House to override bush-lite's Veto, so the 9 or so Dems need to be
persuaded to change their vote when it comes up again and another 15+ Republican
Congresspersons also need to change their vote. It's up to us(WE THE PEOPLE) to
contact those individuals who, when voting again, will change their position and vote.
I am in hopes that Nichole and/or John A. can supply this C&L thread with the specific
identify of those Dems and a listing of Republicans.
This issue alone should give the dems another 50 congressional seats.
bob @ 18:
Actually isn't Socialized medicine: A system of health care in which all health personnel and health facilities, including doctors and hospitals, work for the government and draw salaries from the government. Doctors in the US Veterans Administration and the Armed Services are paid this way. And the Veterans and US military hospitals are also supported this way. Examples also exist in Great Britain and Spain.
The SCHIP Program helps people pay or in some cases pays in full for PRIVATE INSURANCE. In Iowa, Blue Cross Blue Shield is often the insurance provider.
I for one am against anything with the word "socialized" in it. What could be plainer?
Manbearpig @ 5:
But there was enough money when the GOP held the Congress and ear-marked spendin' fer pet projects in their home districts. "Bridge to Nowhere" ring a bell?
Ya know there's no money to pay fer anything anymore. Enjoy yer potholes, pal. Enjoy society after public schools are closed fer lack of fundin'. Enjoy it when Blackwater is patrollin' yer streets with no oversight. Guess there's no money fer air traffic controllers, so enjoy cleanin' up the wreckage of 737's from yer lawn.
No money my ass.
This issue alone should give the dems another 50 congressional seats.
And that would benefit who? The current Dems are in on all of it. They ALL need to go and start over. Reid, Pelosi, Rahm, all of them...and their 'harsh' statements.
bob @ 1:
You know any single girls up? Barring marriage, getting citizenship up there might be a pain (otherwise I might have to start learning French, and I dislike the language even though I like the Quebecois).
How about we fund this program for the next 20 years by taking a 1 year break from Iraq?
We pay for kids' health care for 20 years, and give the troops a break from combat.
More Dem pandering for a tug at the heart strings legislation. It would be nice if they would do some actual work that effects all Americans and not just kids. This whole country is coming apart at the seams and flying down the toilet. This is a huge waste of time! I'm so close to losing my faith in our democracy and I want someone to bring me back.
PNAAC Minister @ 37:
WTF in a society isn't socialized?
YES President Bush loves children. He thinks children should have a good education. He thinks they should learn to read, math and stay healthy. President Bush loves our soldiers and would NEVER put them in harms way and will only use them to help protect our country. He like black people and think they should be treated equally like the Mexicans, the Japs. But he really believes everyone should be treated eaqually and with human dignity, except the arabs, they are not humans, they are evil.
President bush is fically responsible. He knows how to spend our money conservatively. He proved it when he took care of New Orleans. It is not fiscally responsible to fix the levee when there are more pressing issues to take of in the middle east. Money is better spent there (trillions of dollars) because it more important to kill and get those evil-doers in control and to protect our biggest surprise, the billions of dollars already invested there in building the Worlds largest American Embassy so that American can help IRAQ run their OIL resources. So see he is doing what is best for AMERICA.
GEORGE W. BUSH is the GREAT PRESIDENT because WE have no choice.
Socialized or not, the richest country on the globe (formerly anyway) should consider it it's duty to provide for it's children. This isn't socialized really. It is preventing the future workforce and leadership from dying/becoming seriously ill. What is it about greedy friggin' Americans? "Well, I work for mine so should you"...well, these kids have no damn choice, just as war vets have no damn choice. They have no money to pay and in most cases neither do their families. Just once, is it too much to ask of greedy bastards to quit thinking with their damn wallets? Think government spends wisely now on everything else? So what is there to lose? Money for healthcare instead of nukes and missiles. Ya, no doubt missiles are a better use of money.
Everyone here is pissed.
But next time you walk in NYC, focus on the buildings around you, not the people on the sidewalk.
Those buildings represent corporations.
Progressives are fucked.
They better look toward how to organize themselves in the future...after the collapse of America.
[deleted--no blog whoring on topic threads and certainly none with hate speech]
Leave every child behind while he lives on a 1,600 acre ranch
Now we have a confirmed child-hating president in the White House. While there, he can join the confirmed liar, the war criminal, the mass murderer, the confirmed AWOL chickenshit, the confirmed incompetent, the confirmed war-monger, the confirmed alcoholic, the confirmed drug addict, and the confirmed pussy.
Oh, wait a minute, all of these reside within that singular confirmed piece of shit that is george w bush.
Have we had enough of this tragedy yet?
Umar Lee-
Troll elsewhere.
That was the single best ad I have seen for years.
The man is a piece of shit, plain & simple. His legacy will be shit as well. The name 'Bush' will be synonymous with 'fuck up' for the rest of time.
PNAAC Minister @ 37:
So really what your saying is that your strongly against the military. I defy you to name any US institution that is more socialized then the US military. Army soldiers have socialized health care, socialized cafeterias, socialized equipment. The only thing that is yours in the military is the leatherman that you usually end up buying. Even after you leave the military, veterans get alot of socialized benefits from organizations such as the VA. I'm sure you must be completely outraged at the socialized military, right?
Democrats Begin SCHIP Veto Override Campaign, Kane, Capitol Briefing, WaPo, 10/03/2007
Lord of Karma @ 53:
No, I'm not against the military. I'm against anything with a name or label containing the word "socialized". T
The repug echo chamber made me this way.
larry flynt @ 52:
It's time to reappropriate the word. "Bush" means but one thing: pubic hair!
Sitemonitor: Please see my No. 34 above.
Can you identify for us the specific U.S. Senate and U.S. House Bill numbers so that
we can see exactly how "our" Senators and Representatives voted initially when
this Bill was sent to bush-lite(which he vetoed this morning)? Identify of the Dems
voting "Nay" need to be known, as well as those Republican's who "may" be persuaded
to change their vote(s) when this Bill is resubmitted in near future.
larry flynt @ 52:
You are a plain speaker.
Are you the real Larry Flint, whom I respect?
VietVet8666 @ 58:
Who's Larry Flint?
Well, at least one representative will change his vote. Dan Boren (D-OK) publicly stated yesterday that he will change his vote and will vote to override the veto. None of Oklahoma's congressional delegation voted for the bill. I doubt any of the other ones will change their minds, and I'm surprised Boren is changing his mind since he always votes with the repubs. He stated his conscience won't allow him to vote against the bill again.
By the way....WTF do we care what Reid, Leahy, Dodd or Kennedy have to say(as highlighted
in above lead-in), for THEY are all in the U.S. Senate and enough votes are already assured
in that Chamber to override the Veto. They are once again just playing political games..
it is in the U.S. House of Reps where more votes are needed..and if they are truly outraged
by the Veto, they should themselves go over to the House Members and start twisting arms.
http://www.familiesusa.org/bushvskids/how-congress-voted.html
This link contains a list of those who voted for and against the bill the first time around. You can scroll to the bottom to see who was absent at the time of the vote.
Note: Kucinich voted against it. Also Biden and Obama were absent.
I knew that Bush lacked the milk of human kindness when he mocked Karla Faye Tucker, a woman he killed. Some will say the State of Texas killed her, but no, he could have converted her sentence to life without parole. But for his failure to do so, he indeed killed her while mocking her. Pure evil.
He also chose war over peace. He obviously cares about no one.
Exactly what you'd expect from a heartless, compassionless, prick-with-no-soul, rat-ba$tard named George W. Bush. What a great frickin' LOSER!!!!! May his souless self rot in hell if there is one.
''Poor kids first,'' Bush said later in explaining his decision, reflecting a concern that some of the bill's benefits would go to families at higher incomes."
Yes.He's concerned that some of the bill's benefits "would go to families at higher incomes."This would be hilarious is it wasn't so damn disgusting.
This is all about protecting his corporate backers.Fucking jerk.
Rufus @ 63:
I believe he killed ALL the death row inmates that died by execution in Texas while he was gov. Why? Because he had the power to stop each and every one of them. It goes for any gov that signs a death warrant.
It is actually more power-filled and powerful to not execute death row inmates.
Okie Girl @ 62:
Many thanks Okie Girl for listing, however, I am having a difficult time distinguishing/
identifying precisely WHO the Dems in the House were who voted "Nay"...hard for me
to tell which are in italics and who is not.
"Not at all unexpected"
Not to you. And not to me. But aparently it came as a surprise to John Edwards! I got this from his "senior advisor" Joe Trippi this afternoon.
"I know that's hard to believe, and I wish I were making it up. But I'm not."
"I can't believe Bush's nerve, and I bet you can't either."
Just HOW dumb and/or gullible are this Dem Senators anyway???
"The man has made himself lower than a jackal."
An interesting use of the name, jackel there. Who knows, from the way Bush is acting he may have been born of the jackel. I wonder if anyone has checked under his hair to see if there is the number 666?
Okay, Doggiebobo, here's a list I hope will work better for you:
Democrats who voted against the bill:
Boren, OK (he's already indicated he will vote to override the veto)
Castor, FL
Etheridge, NC
Hill, IN
Inglis, SC
Kucinich, OH
McIntyre, NC
Taylor, MS
Democrats who did not vote:
Carson, IN
Delahunt, MA
Johnson, TX
Kucinich? Jesus H Christ.
Is that a misprint?
Andy K @ 56:
That's too good for him... the word Bush means SHITHEAD!!!! FUCKUP!!!! BIGGEST LOSER OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!
How's that?
I am appalled by the negative comments against the GREATEST PRESIDENT EVER!
His love of children is unquestionable! Didn't he decide to continue reading to those lovely schoolchildren while the twin towers were being hit? He put the children BEFORE the New Yorkers!!! What a brave and wonderful leader!
And doesn't he ensure the minimum wage continues to remain the same - allowing more and more children to leave school early and get a meaningful job at MacDonalds or Wal-mart?
And by vetoeing this communist programme SCHIP - he ensures many more billions are sent to Iraq - to PROTECT AMERICAN CHILDREN!!!!
WOW! I am in awe of this great man!
Bravo Mr Bush! And thank you for vetoeing this wretched bill!
Doggiebobo @ 68:
By the way, as I said earlier, there seems to be NO problem with U.S. Senate having
sufficient votes to override Veto...and when it comes up again, I am rather confident
that both Biden and Obama(absent first time around) will vote "Aye", so that results in 69 Yes votes; more than adequate to override.
bush is a bastard without heart. we all know that only his daughters count more than the thousands of children in low income homes. HE DOES NOT CARE.
the gop representatives and lieberman had better find their hearts and override this veto.
the American public will no longer put up with this bastard administration's failures
to protect the welfare of those who are paying ALL THE BILLS, including bush's fucking kids health care.
bettestreep @ 74:
right on the mark !
Okie Girl @ 71:
YOU are a sweetheart...apparently living just to the north of me(Texas). Greatly appreciate
the info...Now it's up to those living in Florida, North Carolina, Indiana, South Carolina, Ohio,
and Mississippi to contact those "turn coat" Dems and let them know they need to change
their votes....and Mass. and that turd here in Texas...
bob @ 1:
I for one appreciate the invitation Bob. However, its always been my way to stand my ground and duke it out as they say. I did it when I served in the Marine Corps and I still intend to do it. I see no point in running to another country and away from a bunch of chickenhawks. This SCHIP bill is just another punch but the fight goes on.
Manbearpig @ 5:
perhaps we could sell your blood and finance it!youd like that wouldnt you?
> However, its always been my way to stand my ground and duke it out as they say
Fuckin' A bubba...that's why I'm not a Democrat. The whole standing up for what you believe in thing is big with me.
tyree @ 80:
Sounds about right, but you can not get blood out of a sour grape....opps, sorry, that's
a beet isn't it?
Fuck Bush.
They know something.
http://www.mindfully.org/Nucs/2007/Moret-Aishah-Ali1aug07.htm
People though Hugo Chavez was kidding or crazy when he said he smelled sulfur when speaking at the U.N. after Bush.
Making good on his threat to block the additional $35 billion in funding over five years to boost the number of children covered under S-CHIP from 6.6 million to 10 million, Bush achieved three objectives - the proverbial hat trick - in one stroke of his veto pen.
First, the President teed up "socialized medicine" as the definitive 2008 GOP talking point in response to any new health care initiatives coming from the Democratic Party. Second, he extended the Republicans' campaign of obstructionism at all costs, blocking Democratic successes at any cost in the hope of painting Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi as leaders of a "do-nothing" Congress. And last, George W. Bush kept intact his consistent record of fierce opposition to the popular children's health insurance program dating back to his days as Governor of Texas.
For the details, see:
"Bush's Hat Trick with S-CHIP Veto."
[...] I thinking if you are going to veto a bill you should do it out in public. There should be a big ceremony if you are that proud of vetoing a bill. There was no ceremony because President Bush knows a [...]

The crooked GWBush takes his place with the Prince:
Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena have their analog with contemporary polotics.
"It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince (or a wanna be emporer)... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan
What is most telling is that Bush didn't make this veto a photo op like he has the others. Not even Perino (or some other lackey) could drum up an audience sympathetic to stand there and clap while he vetoed health care for children.
I can't even begin to put in to words how sad I am for this country right now. It's just not sadness for the United States, it's an overwhelming sadness for the wrong we're doing to the rest of the world as opposed to all the good we could do.
When poor kids are the Military recruiters dream, shouldn't Bush-Co be doing everything possible to ensure they survive their younger years so that 10-20 years from now he has enough fresh blood to keep feeding the meat-grinder. Seems a little self defeating ;)
