Jim Carrey - Send A Message for Ban Ki Moon on Burma
By Nicole Belle Saturday Oct 06, 2007 3:01pm(guest blogged by Bill W.)
Back in August actor Jim Carrey posted on YouTube a "Call to Action on Burma and Aung San Suu Kyi" that received several hundred thousand views. Since that time the demonstrations and the junta's vicious attacks on the peaceful demonstrators have gained lots of attention worldwide, but very little thus far in the way of any real international action to reign in the oppressive government's crackdown as the arrests continue of those who took part in the pro-democracy demonstrations. Now Jim Carrey has posted a video response asking for our help:
Jim Carrey: "A couple of weeks ago I sent you a message about a hero of mine named Aung San Suu Kyi, a brave lady in Burma who won the Nobel Peace Prize and who has often been compared to Gandhi or Nelson Mandela. After she won 82% of the Parliamentary seats in her country, she was denied the right to govern, and held under house arrest by a military regime that has burned over 3,000 villages, forced million from their homes, raped and tortured thousands, and recruited more child soldiers than any other country in the world. That message got a lot of attention because a lot of you watched it. Now I'd like to ask you to use that power again, by sending your very own email to this address: Inquiries@un.org urging the UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon to coordinate a strong response by the United nations Security Council to the situation in Burma. ..."

Nice job Jim.
Time to send in Delta Force
There's way to much violence on this planet.
have mr. carrey make a big ass statement against the brutal rulers in this country!!!
Question Blog @ 4:
This is most definitely a case where it sucks to see the United States sit around doing nothing while innocent people get slaughtered and beat up and go missing over there.
We are far too busy bringing Democracy to the dead children of Iraq.
BennyP @ 6:
and making sure we have plenty of dead children here too... :/

Well, you see; they don't have any oil over there. Rice would call that: "A bad investment".
The LAST thing those brave demonstrators need is "help" from this administration. Bushco's probably looking for ways to make money and political points off it right now.
We all watch the video and put our support and deride the US for not intervening, while at the same time pumping Ron Paul and his "non-interventionist" policy.
It was a much happier time when I thought that the right = stupid and the left = smart.
I definitely feel for the people in Burma, but, given that like-minded people have been impotent thus far in stopping a totalitarian takeover in this country, I'm not really sure what we can do on the other side of the globe.
Theowne @ 10:
I sure hope that "we" that you are using is the royal "we" as in you. Please don't make assumptions about the rest of us regarding Ron Paul. Just because the other republican contenders are even more batshit crazy than he is doesn't mean that some of us agree with this Ron Paul's libertarian in republican clothes approach to right wing bullshit.
Let's get the UN to counteract the US's atrocities in Iraq, too. The US is executing, torturing and raping innocent Iraqis. The limp dick congress won't do anything about it. Why won't the international community seize the opportunity to counteract US hegemony? (I know, rhetorical question.)
Thank You for this post.
L.A. Confidential @ 5:
You mean like the civilians of Iraq ?
Halliburtan is so heavily invested in this countries oil industry, Bushco doesn't dare rock the boat.
I hover still get a kick about a famous celebrity pimping his latest cause celebre, as in "gee wiz, thanks for Jim Carrey to point out the shit going down in Burma, I am sure the UN secretary general was not aware of it, thanks! Awwwweeeesome!"
Nice gesture, however I am afraid that saying shit on youtube doesn't mean diddly squat to the people back in Burma.
tblade @ 13:
Like when the UN opposed American intervention in Iraq even after Colin Powell stated his case?
The United States has a permanent place on the UN Security Council and can veto any resolution.
If the international community is to counteract US hegemony it will be via an organization outside the UN.
Dr. Who @ 17:
I've figured out how you hover: hot air and empty verbiage. But what I haven't quite figured out, just out of curiosity, how long can you "hover?" Youtube is a populist medium of delivery. If you'd managed to stay grounded for the entire video, instead of hovering, you would have understood the delivery was to encourage people to write Bam ki-Moon, expressing their concern.
I know that's not as fascinating as your snarkish logorrhea, but hey, sometimes we do things that don't fit into the punchline of a nihilistic consumer.
Damn.
Now I have to change my opinion of Jim Carrey.
You go Jim.
Be the difference.
Let's do a regime change in Burma! NOT!
Maybe we can make a trade. Burma gets Bill Kristol and we get Aung San Suu Kyi?
Canadians always have to tolerate their stupid american neighbors.....we always have to sound things out pho net i ca lee in order for the dullards to catch on....OR....
maybe we can make it rhyme or say it comes from the Jesus...then finally the ignorant masses might finally catch on.
contact your guh ver nor or your sen a tor and relay Carrey's message. PLEASE!
iraqconcilable @ 15:
Exactly. "Colony Building".
Most Americans prefer sitting around munching Nachos then thinking about Iraq.
Dr. Who @ 17:
So however you hover, Dr. Who, try writing to the Secretary General. You could say something like this:
The address in the video is Inquiries@un.org. How about you just click on the link, and do something for the people of Burma?
Carrey is asking for the UN to intervene. Better the UN than the
American oil companiesUnited States. The wealth of Burma's land should return to its people, not to fat white oilmen from Texas.

Where was/is the "celebrity" community when the Patriot Acts were being passed or the Military Commissions Act, or the torture of illegally held prisnors at Gitmo, or a hundred other things, right here, in you "homeland" that pays your ridiculous saleries?
Yeah, supporting the slaughter of innocent Buddhists is a no brainer on the 'feel good' level but that will be us very soon. Look at what is happening here: the tasering, the snooping, the illegal stops and searches, cameras everywhere, every "security" company in the states trying to create yet another ID machine or test.
Why do they have to know so much about us...? Does any of that make sense?

I am so saddened by the level of cynicism I see in some folks about this. "oh nothing will ever change .. the UN is useless .. BIG OIL runs the world anyway."
One thing that politicians fear more than big companies is an organized citizenry. If we organize, using tools like blogs and youtube, we really can change the world. It might not be as fast as some folks might like but it will happen.
And yes, you can now call me Pollyanna

Kinda slow on the uptake Live leak, this video went out a week or more ago.
Was I the only one watching that and waiting for him to rip his face off and start making fart noises or something?
I mean, but yeah, the situation in Burma is appalling. Let's be serious.

"urging the UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon to coordinate a strong response"
Ban Ki-moon is a plant of the ultra fascist Rev Moon's Unification Church, the moonies. The Bush family has deep and very close ties with the Unification Church. Together with the Moonies and the Saudi's, the Bush mafia crime family is working hard to bring freedom to everyone on Earth.
OK Jim, ya got me. Now what say you turn your sights locally, get edumacated,
and tell us how you feel about things like um... voting, the DNC and Steny Hoyer (Mr low profile) and Al Gore.
Theowne @ 10:
I'm sorry - I am not at all interested in Ron Paul. First of all, he's a Republican. Anyone willing to call themselves a Republican in these times - 'nuf said.
I sent in an email. I don't feel it's celebrities' "job" to make political requests but, they do have a pulpit so I'm happy when they're using it in a cause I support.
It take same amount of energy to write a critical email as it does to wirte one that is supportive. I sent the email as requested by Jim Carrey. I am on disability and do not have many resources, but I will do what I can.

fiver @ 11:
Aren't there any other countries that could step in once in awhile?
Why don't any other nations step up when atrocities like this happen?
great 'quote' from a movie - SHOOTER:
"Nothing like this happens without the agreement of the governments in this world"
im hoping these guys get what theyre fighting for.
Like the man said, action is sitting right there in front of our keyboards. Take a minute or two. Even if it doesn't get a response, you will have done SOMETHING.
