The Daily Show: Tony Snow-job

video_wmv Download | Play video_mov Download | Play (h/t Heather)

Tony Snow was Jon Stewart’s guest last night on The Daily Show, proving you can take the Bushie out of the White House, but you can’t take the delusional neo-con rationality out of him. There’s always this hope that Stewart will eviscerate (metaphorically, of course) these apologists for the Worst. Presidency. Ever. any time one agrees to come on the show, but that’s never been Stewart’s style. Sometimes you get further when you don’t have both barrels blazing. But even if he had discarded his gentle prodding, that bubble of denial in which Snow comfortably sits look way too thick for Stewart to actually get through.

STEWART: He’s a terrific leader…how is that?

SNOW: Okay. Number one, no…

STEWART: I mean that seriously, my definition of a leader is to make tough decisions and then convince people to support them actively and follow you, not…you know, he says, well, I’m not popular because I make tough decisions. Maybe they’re wrong…you know, I could say we should wear coats made out of puppies and nobody wants to do it and I’m like “What a great leader, look at me! It’s unpopular!”

SNOW: Coats made of puppies!?!?! Oh my God…

STEWART: But he’s basically saying…settle down…he’s basically saying “Look how unpopular I am…I’m a leader!”

I like how stewart is respectful in these interviews; when someone believes what they believe, trying to shake the truth out of them ends up making the questioner look like more of an attacker than anything else. Plus snow recently recovered from colon cancer so who really wants to attack a cancer survivor? I thought it was well done, and at least leaves the door open to have him back and show others like him that its not such a bloodbath to go on the show; its an intelligent way of interviewing if you ask me. (and don’t think i’m a republican apologist; i hate them as much as the next guy but i’m also realistic to a certain extent).

Angry One Says:

When former White House press secretary Tony Snow announced his resignation in August, he claimed his departure was motivated by his need for “dough.” Appearing on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart Monday night, it turns out Snow is content to shill for President Bush for free.

Rejecting the assertion that Bush was far from the self-proclaimed “uniter” of GOP lore, Snow pooh-poohed Stewart’s example that a petulant, mean-spirited President intentionally taunted his Democratic opponents by calling theirs the “Democrat Party.” As it turns out, of course, what Snow implied was a slip of the presidential tongue is in fact a deliberate Bush tactic. (A quick Google search of the White House web site shows 39 examples of the “Democrat Party” slur, over 20 of them from Bush himself.)

For the details, see:
“Snow Job: Bush’s ‘Democrat Party’ Taunt.”

I didn’t think it was well done at all. And why does the door have to remain open to have him back? He never says anything new. One element of a good interview should be eliciting something from the subject that is new info to the viewer. I saw the same ol’, same ol’ and it still isn’t a pretty sight.

First interview where I’ve seen the interviewee actually score slightly on Stewart. The guy does have some talent but he still believes in Bush and that to me puts him firmly in the ignorant category. He must only look at the democrats through the eyes of Cheney. Does he have some brainwashing equipment that they use daily or something? They must put subliminal messages in the white noise audio system for the white house.

5
Brian Says:

Because when Snow does come back on, its likely to be in desperation. I don’t envision him writing another book or anything, so its likely to be an 11th hour ’surge’ for some crappy 11th hour policy so they don’t loose the entire senate and congress.

Pete Bogs Says:

Stewart does interviews this way because he knows tearing them a new one won’t get him any more guests like Snow, Lynne Cheney, etc. He does a decent job of getting the other side of the story out there, though never with the guest’s agreement. In other words, he wins no converts. I’d prefer that he be able to continue having these type of guests; to do so he’s got to play nice.

I used to joke that there was a secret Karl Rove Stupid Ray transmitted through the television. Any time you’d catch someone watching soundbites of a Bush Administration official, or something particularly mindless, you see their eyes glaze over, their mouths go slack …

Apparently Silly String helps them detect trip wires on bombs.

Having Tony and Lynn Cheney on is kind of like, whatever, in my book. Neither of them are going to say anything you wouldn’t expect them to say. They have their point of view and we already know what it is. I guess it gets the show some republican viewers but beyond that, what’s the point?

BillD @ 6:

He looks like death warmed over.

That’s the first thing I thought too. He looked like he’s recovering from cancer. I guess telling someone they look good is just civil.
I’ve said this before, I always have a hope that Jon will just peel into someone, but I’m glad it never turns into a shoutfest. Humor is disarming because real humor is always in some kind of truth. There’s a reason that bullshit HalfHour show on Fox died-lies aren’t funny and fascists have no sense of humor. For a comedian with a working man’s knowledge of world affairs, Jon has succeeded because he’s so disarming. I can guarantee you ANY wingnut feels more comfortable going on his show than a sane liberal feels going on a Hannity or O’Reilly shouting match. Jon might edit, but he doesn’t cut mikes.

shano Says:

I wish Jon had asked Tony Snow about his health insurance.

And what Tony would have done if he had no health insurance when he got cancer.

groucho Says:

What a liar. Bush meets with Democrats. Bullshit, since he’s been in office he routinely meets with Republics and shuts out the Democrats. It’s actually something that has been discussed for 6 years. They just keep saying the same lies, even when they are disproven over and over.
A volunteer army? It’s the National Guard, they are deserting and committing suicide at record numbers. They go back over and over. He ignored the fact that noone else in this country is asked to sacrifice, we are told to go shopping.

Why have a professional deflector and liar on the show at all? What’s the point?

I agree with the first comment, it’s important to stop the division among us. Even if you got assholes in front of you, if you start putting up walls, you’re doing the fascists’s work.

EMPY Says:

It would have been nice to hear just one question regarding health care and Tony’s cancer treatment. I don’t think it would have been in poor taste at this point in our health care debate.

JS: So Tony, were you happy with your government provided care?

or

JS: Now that you no longer qualify for socialized medical care, how is the search for private health insurance going with a pre-existing condition?

or

JS: How much of your cancer treatment was denied by your insurance carrier and what kind of hoops did you have to jump through to get care?

or

JS: Justify this for me Tony. White House Press Secretary making $180K/yr getting free government care is okay, but a press operator at a factory making $50K per year having kids that qualify for S-CHIP is bad?

rasta Says:

everyone would love to see Stewart rip into these neokkkons. but as per usual the democrats have waaaaay too much class for that….we still have to tolerate the intolerant.

So? Hitler had 3rd stage full blown Syphilis, Mao had Lou Gehrig’s disease, and Stalin suffered a stroke. And I still don’t find any shred of compassion for any of those assholes.

This Snow jackass almost died of cancer, and even having the possibility of death is not enough for him to stop shilling and contemplating what he has help brought on to the world, esp. the millions of Iraqi civilians. As the owner of such lack of compassion and humanity, I believe that Snow deserves neither in return. Suffering cancer, in my opinion, does not absolve his sins nor places him “off limits.” That would be an insult to the decent people who have to suffer and survive cancer, if this asshole gets to have the same benefit of the doubt that other normal human beings so deserve in those situations.

Fuck him, I hope the colostomy bag gets clogged and has to face his own excrement on a daily basis… certainly he had no problem hurdling and peddling his own excrement towards us when he was healthy.

Ok so the speech wasn’t written that way but Bush just couldn’t help himself-because that’s the way he speaks?? So he can’t help it if his arrogance comes through even though his speech writers got it right…as to increasing the professional force…sure. Like providing them with armour and goods and health care and rehab..yup-he sure is building that professional fighting force! Snow-another one who thinks words mean something when actions are supporting the opposite. Right-a real leader…right over the cliff! (and I am basing this on the results that have been produced-words are cheap Tony-look at reality.) Oh as to we are winning in Iraq- what about Sanchez & the newest Wapo Soldiers editorial…sure we are Tony. And the tooth fairy is on its way.

How is a White House Press Secretary making $180+K/YR getting government provided care okay, but a factory press operator making $50K/YR having kids qualify for S-CHIP bad?

Now that you are in the private sector, what kind of troubles are you seeing trying to get health insurance with a pre-existing cancer condition?

With you government provided care, did you have any of your cancer treatment denied and what kind of hoops did you have to jump through to get care?

Another disappointing Stewart interview. If Stewart is not going to hold these people to account, then he’s enabling them and their lies. For god’s sake, Snow literally said his 6-figure salary wasn’t enough money, and that he’s making a mint off his brief stint in BushCo.

I’d especially have liked Stewart to ask Tony Snow what Snow thinks about the soldiers who’d like to be making more money in the private sector, but have had their service involuntarily extended. Isn’t it great that the architects, enablers and stooges of Bush Administration policy can opt for leisure and luxury, while the pawns of their big game are dying by the thousands.

For a right winger lying is not a handicap, it is a way of life. Esp. when neo-cons have no qualms about the certainty that the end (their end at least) justifies the methods. And if they have to lie, so be it, it is perfectly OK. Their granddady Strauss went as far as publishing that lying to the populace was the right thing to do, as the citizens are too damn stupid to know what it is really good for them… so lying is actually more noble than saying the truth. I mean, how can you even start to tackle against the sort of logic and mindset that these assholes are coming from…

Steward is not stupid, and he knows that if he manages to be so visible and in their radar all the time, that sooner or later he will be “Wellstoned.” These son of a bitches have a predilection towards eliminating liberal, articulate Jews of short stature but who tower over these neo-con cave men in terms of wit and wisdom…

We have an all volunteer military so they know what they’re gettin into. Like the extended tours of duty and the stop loss orders and the sub-standard medical care when wounded and the lack of body armor and the lack of armored vehicles and the tainted water supplied by Halliburton and a big, plastic turkey on a platter served by a mental midget who if not for his family connections could not hold down a place in bread line.

At least he admitted the decision not to reinstate the draft was 100% political.

Exactly, the biggest mistake is to assume that these assholes are “idiots.” Nothing of the sort, in fact I would not put it pass Bush that he is not as dumb as he plays, the son of a bitch knows exactly what he is doing…

Paul Says:

Stewart doesn’t have to demolish idiots like Snow - they do a good enough job demolishing themselves. Stewart also respects his audience by his style in that he allows us to make up our own minds. Haven’t seen much of that since the Huntley-Brinkley News Hour.

I have always thought that his live audience’s role was to assist the idiots in their self-demolition by booing when appropriate or loudly clapping when Stewart makes a point (usually a point that is ethics or morality related).

Snow, is a peice of shit who is looking like shit. He is going to be a willful POS to his last dying breath. I have zero sympathy for him.

39
EMPY Says:

So Tony, now that your off the government teat, are you seeing any reluctance in the private sector to hire a cancer survivor who’s condition was so public? Just asking ’cause you would seem to be a large liability to a group insurance plan. Speaking of private insurance, what is the family premium for someone in your condition these days?

I am going through this with a brother on Medicare Disability and Medicaid. We will have unbelievable bills when this is over. However, I can’t help but think of the 47 million people out there that are working but have no health insurancem no Medicare Disability Health Care, no Medicaid. I guess they are just screwed.

You make an excellent point about Tony. Working for the government, even for a couple of years, must give you the health care these poor souls would love to have.

I didn’t catch the program, but I knew from the getgo that the olnly reason there was no draft is because the war would have become unpopular much more quickly if the upper middle class and the rich had been forced to interrupt their children’s lives for a sleazy little war like this one. Better to put a magnetic yellow ribbon on your car and a God Bless America sticker in your window and claim you’re behind your country 100%, as long as someone else’s ass is on the line.

private citizen snow should not be treated with kid gloves after the way he handled the truth abouth this administration. he was always fond of telling the reporter what they were trying to do when framing a question. he should no longer be the one in control of the questions, the framing of the questions or the termination of the asking of the question or for that matter the dismissive nature in answering a question. he should be hammered by hard questions and follow ups. and his lies and mistatements should be thrown back in his face. i have no respect for this lying piece of bush crap. he played a large part in manipulating the message set forth by bush co. and he is as guilty as the rest of them for the results.

Here’s what gets me. He quit being the WH spokes-liar because he needed to make more money to cover his ailment. Wasn’t he making $120,000+ in that job? I’m assuming the job came with health care coverage too.

If he can’t make it on that, how the hell is the average Joe supposed to care for his family making less than $45,000?

Snow is a gifted professional liar for hire. Anyone who believes ANYTHING this sack o’ dung has to say should go back home to the time share he/she just bought in beautiful downtown Baghdad. I don’t know why Stewart and Co. have people like Snow and the Evil One’s wife on the show if they are not going to use them as foils for some good comedy. It is still a comedy show is it not? I know they give us more news that all the news channels combined but are they trying to be bipartisan for some reason? They are letting these jerks come on the show and get their ‘Bush talking points’ on the Daily Show’s airtime without ridiculing them as they should be. I don’t get it.
