The final vote was 273 - 156, 16 votes short of the necessary 2/3 to override Bush’s veto. Democrats Jim Marshall and Gene Taylor crossing the aisle to vote against SCHIP and 44 Republicans voting for SCHIP (which is one less than the initial vote).
I’ve included the roll call at the above link and there’s a widget on the right margin of the page to contact Congress. If you’re so inclined, you may want to ask those 156 representatives why they hate poor, sick kids. Because believe me, whether or not we have SCHIP, we ALL pay for the care of these children when they have health care needs.
Keep in mind, the cost of the expanded SCHIP program is what we pay in Iraq in THREE WEEKS.
UPDATE: House Democrats vow to insist on covering 10 Million Children
3 Trackbacks To “The House Fails To Get Veto Override on SCHIP“

that’s because is was an increase in spending.
Frist!
And while you’re at it, Call Pete Stark’s office and tell him THANK YOU!!!
Video of Pete Stark spanking Bush
Damn… beaten to the punch!
I’m convinced that the GOP representation in Congress are nothing but zombies. Flesh eating zombies who listen to no one but the Rovians!
Assholes!
Where is the tidal wave that needs to overwhelm DC and flush all these corrupt, cynical legislators out to sea permanently?
I do mean all.
TO SATISFY RIGHT-WINGERS, AND QUALIFY FOR SCHIP, MOTHERS STUFF KIDS BACK INTO WOMB
Why do Republicans hate the US?
bang @ 1:
yeah… but the Republicans have been SOOOOO thrifty these past 6 or so years! not throwing money away on ANYTHING at all. they are so stupid they don’t know the difference between government spending money on what it is suppose to and handouts to the filthy-rich. i swear, an amoeba has more neurons than the cumulative number of brain cells found it he Congressional GOP caucus.
Had this been health care for persons trapped in a permeate vegetative state for over a decade, these schmucks would have been all over it.
*Sigh*
Why do we even BOTHER thinking that someone with any gravitas will ever TRY to stop this evil motherfucker?
Years from now, people will no longer roll their eyes whenever someone likens Bush to Hitler. As Democrats, we virtually sanction all his crimes. We are all accomplices of this war criminal.
The ABSOLUTELY LAST THING I wanted to achieve by voting for Pelosi and Reid was for them to become snippy little handwringing do-nothings, and sure enough, that’s what they have become.
Amerika - land of the Good Germans who stood by and who did absolutely nothing to stop this evil dictator.
Pelosi is such a total, complete, abject FAILURE. She couldn’t get enough votes together to get HEALTH INSURANCE FOR POOR CHILDREN.
Pelosi said she wouldn’t pursue impeachment because she had an aggressive agenda. BS. All she’s accomplished is an insultingly low minimum wage increase attached ton obscene funding bill. Blood money.
Pelosi is a TOTAL FAILURE!
Nicole Belle makes an excellent point. The money that is spent on this foolish and most unnecessary occupation could more than pay for health insurance, along with contributing to education, infrastructure, libraries, etc. But it certainly does seem that when the superpatriots try to manipulate the public by using words like patriotism and freedom and fear, their brains proceed to shut down and their emotions start to overwhelm their [alleged] cerebral activities.
Again, why aren’t there riots in the streets??
I just got an email (no kidding) from a group protesting Jane Fonda’s behavior in Viet Nam because she was recently nominated as one of the top 100 women of the century. Is our society dancing with madness or what?
Priorities, I don’t have to show you no damn priorities. To hell with the kids, get that commie loving bitch from 40 years ago…
Republicans need to start disappearing!
TimV @ 9:
Actually, you got that wrong. They are cutting spending on unneeded programs. You know, programs for those of us not of the base.
They are most definitely not throwing money away. They are giving it to important, worthy causes and organizations.
You know, like Halliburton and GE and the “War on Terror©”.
I know some senate ’savior dems’ we could save some money on by bouncing their butts outta office. Put that in my (now legal, thanks to our ’savior dems’ ankle-grabbin’) illegal wiretap government file…you spineless, @ss-kissing liars!
KUCINICH/FEINGOLD ‘08
Because of sh*t just..like…this.
The comment comparing this to 3 weeks in Iraq is right on target!
Why more people in this country are not outraged by the wasted dollars in Iraq is beyond me.
Politicians will debate domestic spending at any level until they’re blue in the face; but we’ll send truckloads of money to Iraq and think nothing of it; don’t need to know what it’s for; don’t need approvals; no accountability whatsoever!
Bush said in a speech yesterday that he uses his veto power so that he remains relevant. WTF kind of dumb ass comment is that? The man has been irrelevant his entire life! He is totally incompetent and a fucking idiot!
Fuck him and the people who support him! Assholes!
I have a question ? how long will it befor the DEMOCRATS Cave on this BILL, a day or a week. GET OUT THE KNEE PADS.
Don Davis @ 7:
Oh boy you just typed out every right-winger’s biggest fantasy…The Eternal Fetus!
Yeah, but Reid and Pelosi are already talking about “tweaking” the bill to get it past Bush.
Why won’t they just keep sending him the damned bill and let him keep vetoeing it until 2008 - then hang that around the necks of every member that voted against it? They’ll get their veto-proof majorities then.
But what’s more scary is Pelosi’s inability to facilitate party unity on this. Some Dems jumped ship and swam in the swamp with the Rethugs. Taylor and Marshall need to be replaced if that’s how they represent their districts (with residents that probably depend on SCHIP like we depend on oxygen to breathe).
If Pelosi hadn’t taken impeachment off the table she could’ve used it to get the SCHIP Bill passed. Is this women so completely stupid as to leave her best weapon (impeachment) at home while she engages in a fight?
Get ready for the Telecom Immunity Act to pass tomorrow. The final nail in the coffin for the Fascist States of America.
“The comment comparing this to 3 weeks in Iraq is right on target!

Republicans don’t care about that spending because it involves brown people dying. That gets them off even more than dying American children.
Well, this will certainly help their opinion poll standings.
I wonder how much the tobacco lobby played in this? Part of paying for it was by putting a high tax on tobacco products. I’m sure the tobacco lobby wouldn’t want their products put in jeopardy by additional taxes to the consumer.
Let’s see….. medical care for 10 million children for a year….. or…the cost of 48 days of the US in Iraq….. That’s a no-brainer for our “Representatives” in Congress.
Peace @ 12:
Yup, time for her and Reid to step aside. This is a disgrace. With real leadership it should have been a cakewalk to override this veto.
I wish there had been this much discussion in the house and senate before it was decided that there should be an invasion of Iraq.
Watch out! Pelosi and Rahm Emanuel have made a vow!
Perhaps they should have framed it as a faith-based initiative, then the reich-wingers would have been salivating all over it.
The sick Reslugs always protect the unborn, but once they’re born they throw them in the trash and spit on them.
Symes @ 16:
Oh you’re right. So if you look at the GOP’s actions through blood-colored-glasses, it all makes perfect sense. They’ve been the model of fiscal responsibility by reducing pork (i.e.- health care, education, infrastructure, science funding, etc) and really pouring money into the programs that really matter (i.e.- increasing Paris Hilton’s wealth, giving billions to Dick Cheney’s friends at Haliburton et al, backing the tobacco lobby, etc.). I’ve totally been seeing things through the reality perspective. If I look at the world through the Republican point of view… it all makes sense. How could I have been such an idiot?!?!
Fucking Taylor.
BTW I’m betting Ron Paul voted against childrens health care am I right?
Dana @ 20:
Just too bad we can’t stuff Rush and the Righteous Bros (and Sisters) back into the womb.
The reich-wingers and herr dubyah would have signed it in blood if this was a bill for health care of Iraqi children.
“The reich-wingers and herr dubyah would have signed it in blood if this was a bill for health care of Iraqi children.”
Oh, they’ve done away with thousands of them too.
What good Christians these people are.
I wonder how the MSM will present this?
Republicans/Neocons are good for business
[deleted–not on this site]
Tenderfoots on tender hooks.
Bill @ 37:
That, and it’s a Democratic Congress that “failed” to pass the law.
Who the F&*^ are Jim Marshall and Gene Taylor ??? They need to be punked in their primaries. What total pieces of excrement.
fiver @ 29:
What Pelosi and Emanuel don’t understand is that Bush has probably wiretapped all the congressional Republicans. He’s probably blackmailing them to keep them voting in lockstep. The game is rigged. The only way the democrats can win is to impeach the entire administration. Short of this Pelosi, Reid and Emanuel will lose every fight. There’s no other explanation why any congressperson would continue to support a hated president instead of helping sick, poor children.
Uninsured American children = reich-wing victory.
Enough said.
CD @ 33:
Yep, you are correct Ron Paul voted “Nay”, along w/153 other Repigs.
Dana Perino: “We won this round on SHIP.” yeah, well don’t tell that to the electorate because this is going to play big in 2008. Sorry, Perino but you just cost the republicans more seats than you realize.
w would use a signing statement anyway because he is above the law.
His WWIII comment is getting attention from the rest of the world.
They think he is Hitler.
Geez.
Amazing. Suffering children is a victory for the Republican Party. How can any human being associate with that crowd?
Jim Marshall and Gene Taylor need to be fired next year, along with those Republicans who would prefer war to children.
Somewhere along the way, some company will lose profits if SCHIP were to pass. Those who voted against it most certainly care for those poor, sick children, they just care about their stock portfolio more. Haven’t you all figured out how your country works yet?
Reich-wingers better remember this date; this date is the day you’ll remember as the straw that broke the camel’s back leading towards your permanent minority status.
getalife @ 46:
Are you sure they only think? Seems like they might know.
Doggiebobo @ 44:
Of course he did. His brand of conservative libertarianism opposes all such government programs, especially federal ones.
goatsage @ 6:
It will never happen until we make electoral reform a major issue. Our electoral system is broken. Until we fix it, we’ll keep getting the same types of Congresses.
Can we stop beating this dead horse? Is the SCHIP program important? Yes. Are the congresscritters moving on to other things like taking away more of our rights and covering criminals asses with a new FISA bill? Yes. Can we at least multi task? I hope so.
An 11% congress and a 24% President continue to kick the ass of America.
If only they were that efficient in Iraq.
… at this point, it’s just become comically pathetic.
