C&L’s Late Nite Music Club with Etta James

I met a strong and remarkable woman yesterday, Dr. Rita Ramirez-Dean from California’s Inland Empire. She’s going to run for Congress against a powerful and corrupt incumbent, Jerry Lewis. Rita told me what it was like growing up in a world where men– and women– would routinely tell a young girl that “only men” could do this or that. She graduated #1 in her class and her guidance counselor suggested she could be an elementary school teacher or a secretary. Rita is a little younger than Etta James, who we’re featuring tonight at the Music Club. Rita’s story inspired Lucas and I to put this together for you. It’s a cover from 1999 of a song written and recorded by Alice Cooper, who sings it from a somewhat different perspective:

So much horrid crap going on in the world, no one visiting this thread.

I love to listen to Etta James. One of the few artists of whom I have most all of their recordings. :)

Etta James? Yeah buddy.
Love her to pieces.
Check out Big Maybelle too.
I don’t know if she’s on video or not.
Might be a “tribute” around somewhere.

Etta, Ella, Sarah, Nina… what the hell was in the water that produced these angels on earth? I think I literally seek solace (or is it succor?) in their voices daily… with a heaping dose of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” to bring me back to earth. Sigh…

That was great. I always thought it took someone off the wall, like Coop, to sing that song. Never pictured it sung by a woman. Funny, it’s not like it wasn’t obvious.

I can relate to Dr. Rita Ramirez-Dea! I was in the 3rd grade, and when asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, I said I wanted to design airplanes. But I was told that girls couldn’t do that.

And yes, there really was a time when middle class females graduating from high school in the early 60’s had nurse, school teacher, secretary, waitress, or wife as their only career choices. If you were lucky enough to have literary parents, you might be able to add “associate editor” to that list.

Let’s just freshen that up a bit…………AT LAST.

StraightShooter & Dave,

Doncha love her LP “SEVEN YEAR ITCH” ? What a line up of back-up artists on that one eh?

The whole album is pure “get down deep” Etta !!

Love the ballad DAMN YOUR EYES !

I saw her in San Juan Capistrano,Calif. in early 90’s. And when she did COME TO MAMA she turned and started slowly shakin’ that humongous “backside”.

Crowd went crazy. What a performer AND voice !!

I also have her CD doing Billy Holiday songs (can’t remember title) but it has all the contemporary jazz greats with helpin’ out. Her version of DON’T EXPLAIN is great. She also recently did a cover of Simply Red’s HOLDING BACK THE YEARS.
It’s on my extensive list to add to my collection.

Love her! She and Gladys are my favorite soul vocalists!

Anyone watch “Mad Men”? I wonder if that’s how they actually did treat women 1960.

Anyway, I don’t know Dr. Rita Ramirez-Dean but Jerry Lewis is the epitome of corrupt no-nothing, do-nothing Republican. Truly stink on wheels.

Dr. Ramirez-Dean seems a fine replacement.

i was lucky to be at the filming of the chuck berry movie “hail hail rock & roll.”
if you’ve seen the movie, many artists joined chuck on stage that evening, but in my opinion etta james stole the show. on the dvd bonus section, we find out chuck didn’t even want her on the bill.

this song was also featured on last weeks final episode of californication.
the teenage daughter performed it during her mom’s wedding reception.

I started playing music in 1952 , and my parents ( rip ) loved country , which I really did not like , the only git-tar picker I liked was Chet Atkins ( country ) to me he had class . Across the street from where I grew up there was a night club ( Oakland Ca , the club was the Showcase 33rd and Telegraph ) in the 60’s I remember BB king , Albert King , ( my man ) Bobby Blue Bland , Ike and Tina , Muddy Waters and more than I can remember now .
I would sneak out of the house and go sit on the corner ( when I could get away that is ) and play my git-tar ( a Gibson ES -125 , that my parents bought me in 1957-58 ? , or there abouts ) , with all of these great names it was Etta James who burned a heart in my soul . She still is to this day one of my fav’s , another woman who is a fav of mine is Natalia Cole great voice , oh of course , Ella , Billiy , Bessie , Carmen , and let me give a plug to a not yet know star ) to be , and what a voice Karen Lawerence SP ? ) and my now fav , that little string bean ( damn memory is failing me right at the moment ) who just won the American ( something or other , ) awards , damn it I would have to cancel this out to find out her name a 12 year , red headed girl who sings like Janis , I mean to tell you she belts it out there .
A great movie to watch if you can find it is ” Lighting in a bottle ” my fav Etta song , all of them , At Last , Pushover , A sunday kind of love . ALL OF THEM , the one and only Ms James .

david n Says:

Had to look it up , and the string beans name is Bianca Ryan , what a future she has for her , best wishes for you .

I went to high school in the 70s, graduated in 1980. I was always a high honors student with ambition. I remember taking an English class with a male teacher who one day handed back a homework assignment to me, which he had graded A+. He commented, “You’ll make some man a fine wife someday.”

Never heard him tell a boy, “You’ll make some woman a fine husband someday.”
