Anyone Want To Help Make Rahm Accountable?

Instead of a candidate today, Firedoglake is doing something different in the Blue America slot. We’ll be discussing the Rahm Emanuel-Tom Tancredo alliance and how to deal with it. The leader of Illinois biggest immigrants’ rights coalition (130 organizations), Josh Hoyt of the Illinois Coalition of Immgrant and Refugee Rights will be our guest. Many of us met him at Yearly Kos and know he’s a dedicated fighter. Speaking with him for an hour on the phone just now made me certain that for those of us who want to make Emanuel feel accountable have a great ally in Josh.

We’ll be starting at FDL at 2pm (EDT/11am PT).

Why don’t you fight for respecting the rule of law in the U. S.? Hispanics are this election’s evangelical christians, that’s all. We’ve endured seven years of having the evangelicals dictate to us because they claim the United States is supposed to be a christian country. Now we have to listen to a bunch of foreign people who are in our country illegally dictating to us because they say the United States was supposed to be Mexican.

Get a clue, will ya?

He’s destroying the Republican party on Republican party grounds. In other words, the republican party and its propaganda are left unchallenged, and they will win again in the right circumstances.

The rule of law is not God’s word. It is made by men and it changes all the time.

We have to change the law to do what we think is right.

For you to talk about “the rule of law” means you have no will to change the status quo. You are the french guy who didn’t even begin to resist. You are the american guy who doesn’t even begin to say a word against the government. You are the one who lets bullshit happen and do nothing about it.

When our borders are secure, we can turn our attention to dealing with the people who are here illegally… I’m sorry, but I don’t buy big business’ argument that the economy will collapse when they lose all these workers that have held down american wages and benefits for decades… When the over abundance of cheap labor disappears, business will need to pay better wages and provide better benefits to attract workers… Taaa daaa… Wage go up and so do benys… Personally, I don’t feel much in the way of sympathy for these illegals who came here in violation of our immigration laws, who broke the law everyday they worked using someone elses SSN or who use emergency room medical services that they didn’t pay for… ENFORCEMENT ONLY, ENFORCEMENT NOW, WHAT THE HELL ARE WE WAITING FOR? Close the border, severely penalize employers who knowingly hire illegals over citizens, don’t allow guest workers to compete with americans for jobs, assist mexico in strengthening its economy, keep illegals off public assistance and pretty soon they’ll be self-deporting themselves back to sunny mexico…

I remember walking home and finding a flyer by Rahm’s 2006 Republican opponent. It accused him of going around and helping other Democrats win, but asked, “What is he doind for this district?” Nowhere in the flyer did it mention that he is the head of the DCCC, and its his job to help other Dems win. Deliberate deception from a filthy gop with no chance of winning anyway. It made me sick.

You want to make him accountable, the person to support is Alan Augustson, who is the only other person running for the 5th Congressional District in Illinois. He is a candidate of the Illinois Green Party.

What about a Crooks and Liars “Green America” campaign to channel donations to Augustson? Nobody blue has the gumption to take him on–not even anyone “red.” So support your Green candidates and work for real change in the corporate incumbency system! Or give to the Illinois Green Party to help build an accountable government.

How are we gonna close the border. Did ya ever think of that? We can’t manage to control a single city in The MeatGrinder, not one, and you’re runnin’ around screamin’, ‘Close the border! Close the border!’ It. Simply. Cannot. Be. Done.

On any practical basis, reality is not 24 Hours and we don’t have the money, the manpower or the technical ability to ‘close the border’ whatever that might mean.

Reality is not subject to your, nor Lou Dobbs whim.

beckyboo Says:

I wonder why it is that so many people look at the immigration problem and blame it on “the people who break our laws and come here illegally” instead of where the real problem is, and that’s with US.

WE (universal we, not selective we) won’t demand that the corporations that are hiring illegals,(like Wal-mart, who was fined for it, and yet continues to use illegal workers throughout the country) start following the rules that are on the books for verifying a persons legal status to work. It is because WE are too busy worrying whether or not celebutarts are wearing underwear, watching internet porn, or being told what to think by the talking heads on television. WE don’t read books and news anymore. WE don’t want to think too hard for ourselves, so we allow people like Rahm Emmanuel and Hillary Clinton to tell us what WE really need.

It is true the Republicans want the BIG DADDY to come in and save us all from the scary stuff. It is also true the Democrats want MOMMY to come and make all our troubles better. Both these mass feelings imply that WE are children.

WE are not children, and the government is not our parent. WE are adults, and the government is our servant, and if WE don’t use it to make our lives better and to serve our interests, corporations will, and have. The masses have always had to fight to keep their interests before the government, because they don’t have a voice with the elites. The masses have been hypnotized and convinced that Corporations and Governments have their best interest at heart.

It looks like people are starting to wake up. I hope that when the mass awakening takes shape and form, that it is not so late that violence is the only way for US to get the attention we deserve as humans, and not as a cog in the machine.

How unfortunate that a movement to oust the scumbag disingenuous fraud Rahm Emmanuel would be tied to a specific policy like this. Rahm is a counterproductive fraud who cares about himself and nothing else. That’s why he needs to go.

I am also in favor of greater and greater control of the borders.

But again, giving Rahm Emmanuel a little Joe Lieberman treatment would make me very happy. I will never forgive him and Carville for their decision to badmouth Howard Dean, the single reason I ever became a Democrat, immediately after a historic election win.

AIPAC forced or influenced, if you will, the invasion of Iraq upon you and me through their lobbyists in Congress, White House, military industry and individual senators and representatives, each paid dearly. The war is one of the most expensive military adventures ever, only second to World War II. “Just how does AIPAC relate to this story?” If not for the war based on lies, the money would have been spent on border security, health care, education, roads, anti-flooding/fire solutions, green solutions, solar power, wind power, new oil refineries, maintenance and modernization of tunnels and bridges, rebuilding LA and so on. Forgive me, I happen to live in San Francisco Bay Area, and even tough my daily routine needs some slight modifications this week, surprisingly I still enjoyed my daily swim, even though the waters were polluted by the Korean oil tanker. With each passing day my beloved America is more and more dreamlike. The Dems in Congress working for us, can life get any better? Remember, the feel good attitude is the way to go!!

He’s done some disturbing things, Rocker5150, and they dont represent what’s best for America.

Here is what a ’self-hating’ Jew, me, has to say about Rahm Emanuel:

This is what Rahm Emanuel is about: “Open Borders Threaten Jewish Clout” — The Forward.com. Steinlight, who wrote this article, is the senior policy analyst at the Center for Immigration Studies [a John Tanton funded and founded organization and major source for Lou Dobbs’ anti-immigration stance] and former director of national affairs at the ultra-conservative American Jewish Committee.

Rahm Emanuel does not operate, or conduct himself, in the best interest of the USA. If you think for one moment that his position in the Dem Party is in your interest, or even remotely represents the Democratic Party, you are fooling yourself.
Trade Fights by John Nichols, April 1, 2002

There aren’t many Democratic Congressional candidates who can claim that they personally thwarted the agenda of organized labor in the most critical legislative battles of the past decade, but former Clinton White House aide Rahm Emanuel can–and does. Northwestern University, where Emanuel has served as an adjunct professor of communications studies, identifies him as the man who “coordinated the passage of NAFTA.” In addition to getting the North American Free Trade Agreement “ball across the goal line,” as Emanuel likes to put it, Clinton’s former senior adviser for policy and strategy was also a point man for the Administration in fights with unions over granting China most-favored-nation trading status and over fast-track negotiation of a hemispheric free-trade-area agreement that union leaders call “NAFTA on steroids.” […]

As the son of a recent immigrant himself Emanuel is unaware of the history of this country; or if he is, he chooses not to recognize it. And he doesn’t get called on the carpet for it because most Americans are unaware of it; frankly, most Americans are uneducated. The majority of Americans dont speak French, as I do, or Spanish, and therefore cannot read the histories of this country written by the people who discovered it. They are left to the English fictions of how this country came to be, written by the novelist and poet Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Or they believe Hollywood movies about such things as the Louisiana Purchase, which in fact was Spain helping us out by retroceding land back to France (11/30/1803) so Napoleon (12/20/1803) could sell it to Jefferson for 15 mill (12/30/1803). That happened 27 years after we became a country.
Immigration — and the Curse of the Black Legend — by Tony Horwitz

The majority of this physical land was Spanish-owned for 300 of its 500 years: until 1803. Look at the map. The Spaniards may have been conquistadors, but there would be no cattle and no horses on this continent without them. The Wild West icons owe their inception to the Spaniards.

For those of you who are Jewish, as I am, let me tell you that no Jewish elements were introduced to America without Spain. The Jews kicked out of Spain in 1492 went first to the Netherlands then Curacao. From there, they populated the Americas. Sandra de Marchena, one of the original 12 Jewish families, created a database here.

This topic is about immigration and policies about immigration; you say we have to abide the rule of law.
I say if the rule of law is unjust and against human rights, we have to change the law. I say the immigration laws are unjust and we have to change them
Defending the law for the sake of defending laws is anti-democratic. We need to discuss the issue, not whether or not we should discuss it.
Immigrants are part of this country and deserve to be given rights. They work and live just like you do.

But this has blown into Mexican-hatred, Rocker5150. Of the 11.1 million illegals in 2005, about 6.75 were Mexican, the rest were from other countries.

The issue with Rahm Emanuel is that he pushed through NAFTA over broad bi-partisan objection and he’s proud of it. Read about it here:
Trade Fights by John Nichols, April 1, 2002

There aren’t many Democratic Congressional candidates who can claim that they personally thwarted the agenda of organized labor in the most critical legislative battles of the past decade, but former Clinton White House aide Rahm Emanuel can–and does. AS A RESULT OF THAT, US firms went south destroying the mom and pop operations in Mexico and just when the Mexican population got used to it in the early part of the late 90s, paying about $2.22/hr, these firms again with the assistance of Rahm Emanuel upped and left Mexico for China where the wage was $.60. It nearly bankrupted Mexico and it almost bankrupted Goldman-Sachs but Emanuel got the US taxpayer to bail them out of their peso woes. A sea of people crossed the border in the effort to feed their families.

This man is a bad piece of business, and I say this as a former Israeli citizen and a Jew. If you want the real elephant in the room, check this out. Here’s where Rahm is coming from; he doesn’t give a shit about America: “Open Borders Threaten Jewish Clout” — The Forward.com.

Heretic Says:

I have to break with party orthodoxy here. We need to send the illegals back home. Nobody wants them here dragging our wages down except businesses that rely on near slave labor. Don’t help them. They will adjust to paying higher wages. A country full of illegal aliens also creates a working class that can’t vote Democrat. For the love of decency, don’t let that continue. Drivers licenses and a guest worker program for illegals are compromises that do nothing to solve problem of a non-voting working class. A path to citizenship? Sounds like a vicious bureaucratic nightmare waiting to happen to me. With voting Americans in the jobs reserved now for illegals, working conditions would improve, and maybe just maybe the labor unions would come back. We are on the wrong side of this. Will prices go up? Sure they will. What about the morality of the issue? It hardly applies. When someone sneaks into your house, you are justified in kicking him out, even if you find him amiably and diligently doing the dishes you have been letting pile up. Is it humane to make them go back to Mexico? Mexico has a very poor standard of living. Maybe if they could not count on us, they would do something to improve their own country, and they would be going back with some experience about how a first world country runs. Don’t get me wrong here. I am not saying that illegals are even one of our biggest problems. I am saying, however, that people who are are against enforcement are getting scarcer because once we accomodate some massive influx and think ourselves humanitarians, we look and see there is another influx, and behind that another, and the line does not seem to end.

I would accept full amnesty for all, if that were an option, but we all know that will not happen. We could try enforcing labor laws and targeting employers for hiring illegals. Well, I think that would be a lot more difficult than deporting them all. The business community throws around too much political weight. The political consequences of enforcement? I don’t have stats, but most of the Hispanics I have talked to about this are in favor of enforcement-only. I think we are being fooled by the business community on this one. Nobody likes having illegals crowding in in these numbers. Illegal aliens are unpopular now and they are getting more and more unpopular by the day even among Hispanics as they lower our workplace standards and wages and radically alter the character or our communities. We need to stop owning this issue. We need to stop following this pied piper. If we fight for illegals to stay, a proposition which is hard to get behind in itself, we should only fight for complete amnesty, not some lame compromise, so that our working class will always be able to vote… Democrat.
