Blue America: Holding Rahm Emanuel Accountable: UPDATED
By John Amato Wednesday Nov 14, 2007 6:15pm
(The Accountability Moment) Updated: Here's some pics from ICIRR folks that have joined Blue America. And here is an audio report from Chicago Public radio on Joshua Hoyt's reaction...Many of you have probably heard that Rahm is backing the extreme right wing Tom Tancredo and his hateful stance on immigration. C&Lers have made their voices heard loud and clear on this issue and understand the need for good border security, but with a comprehensive---humane plan in mind. We're human beings after all. The Republicans need a wedge issue to run on like they did in the '04 election with "gay marriage" and now they've picked--Immigration. Because as you know they're stealing all our jobs, plan to blow up our malls and will be illegally voting...<snark> I've been following the Voter ID bills (Indiana is coming up and Kevin Drum has some important graphs) and immigration will be the major reason the Republicans give to try and scrub the voter rolls to steal as many elections as they can. Have they produced any illegals that have actually voted? It's all a straw man story, but you know that already.
After the blowback from the base around comprehensive immigration reform (and the loss of any hope of splitting the powerful growing Latino voting bloc) they are going back to the tried and true. Vote suppression and bogus accusation of voter fraud. They've been doing it for years and now that they've had access to the DOJ and trained a whole new generation of Monica Goodlings, I have no doubt they've devised some great new techniques.
Rahm's play feeds into the Voter ID/fraud meme and it is truly disheartening to see so we at Blue America have decided to send Emanuel a message.
We've joined with the ICIRR (Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights)
PROGRESSIVE BLOG PAC JOINS WITH IMMIGRANT’S RIGHTS GRASSROOTS TO DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM RAHM
Blue America PAC supports Chicago immigrant grassroots in Cong. Emanuel’s home district, in a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party on immigration issue
PAC launches ads in Spanish, Polish, and Korean press in Congressman Rahm Emanuel’s district
Chicago November 15, 2007 — The Blue America PAC is joining today with ICIRR (Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights) and Chicago grassroots immigrant groups to demand accountability from Congressman Rahm Emanuel. The PAC is funding ads and robocalls calling on Emanuel to:
“Stop being afraid to fight for immigrants, and start acting like a real leader.”
And no matter where you’re located, you can join the Accountability for Rahm campaign with a donation at Blue America’s Accountability Moment.
Digby has a wonderful post explaining it all
So why in the world do Democrats believe that they'll benefit from a new enforcement only bill so harsh that it even calls for legal family members who help an undocumented worker to get a year in jail for doing it? This isn't like welfare reform at all. There's no "taking it off the table." This is an issue that hits directly at the largest and fastest growing new voting bloc in America.
The report documents how Hispanics have gone from a group trending Republican to a group overwhelmingly Democratic; one whose percentage of the American electorate has increased by 33 percent in the last 4 years; and one poised, because of the structure of the Electoral College, to determine who the next President will be in 2008.
Telling these people to suck it up, as Carville and Greenberg, in their ever more desperate quest to recover the aging "Reagan Democrat" are doing by urging Democrats to pass legislation virtually designed to suppress their vote, is nothing short of political malpractice. It is the equivalent of the Republicans telling the Christian right to stay the hell out of politics back in the 1980's....please read on

Power corrupts, Emanuel is a textbook case.
I'm a Democrat and I agree with Rahm.
The philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach based his theory of religion in large part upon the idea of projection, i.e., the idea that an anthropomorphic deity is the outward projection of man's anxieties and desires. So god is packing nine inches and wants to do the nasty. Fuck it – I’m supposed to avoid the near occasions of sin, although that seems to be one of the few rewarding activities left on this armpit of a planet tucked away in some insignificant corner of a redundant spiral galaxy swirling around what was once thought of as the center of the universe (before Galileo risked get his own nutsack fried by the Inquisition by telling the Pope it was totally bogus) but later found to be some backwater burg where you can’t even get a decent egg cream. Oops, there’s that Freudian projection again, but everybody knows that Freud was a perv, shtupping his sister or cousin or the nun that taught him in the seventh grade whilst he fantasized on red pencil boxes or trains going into tunnels. Oops! Damn! Anyway, you can see I’m affected, but not infected, so keep that in mind. “He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." I don’t know who said that but damn, it’s hot!
It's terrible but true, we have to win the fight to reclaim our own party from right wing shills such as "Wrong Way" Rahm, before we can win the struggle against the far right. In a way, we are reliving the history of the Wiemar Republic when "moderates" (the corporate and economic elite) handed control of a democracy over to Adolf Hitler because of their fear of the working class.
Well I can certainly understand the outrage but don't sound so surprised, Rahm is the picture you see when you look up the acronym D.I.N.O. From abandoning so many congressional races when he was DNC chairman to being buddies with Tancredo, he has never done anything but harm the party.
Rahm and the DLC: losing elections they should win and barely winning what should be landslides as Republican lite since 1992...
For God's sake, read this:
"Open Borders Threaten Jewish Clout - Forward.com" By Stephen Steinlight, senior policy analyst for the Center for Immigration Studies (Lou Dobbs favorite DC group)
http://www.forward.com/articles/785/
Get your heads out of the PC world and realize what is going on.
You are more likely to lose your job to outsourcing than to an illegal immigrant. The whole issue is a classic bait and switch. Instead of blaming corporate authored trade deals and the corruption of our democratic system by wrongly decided court cases on campaign finance reform (money does not equal free speech, free means free, it is not a commodity that can be bought, sold and paid for). We are being misdirected to blame immigrants for our declining wages and lack of good job opportunities. It's classic scapegoating which the elite needs to draw attention away from their own role in the creation of economic inequality and injustice. Just as during the collapse of the Wiemar Republic, the forces of corporatism are shifting the blame for an out of whack system onto the shoulders of minority groups. From the Libertarians, you hear them blame the occupation of Iraq on International Zionist conspiracies drawing attention away from our domestic Military Industrial Complex, Big Oil and US imperialism and from the likes of Tancredo and Rahm, blaming immigrants drawing away attention from bogus corporate written "free" trade deals and outsourcing for the loss of the middle class dream. Wake up folks! It's the corporations and economic elite who are in charge. We need to return to a system of well regulated capitalism and insulate our politicians from the influence of accumulated wealth and capital.
hareli @ 7:
The Forward is a far right wing rag, it does not represent the Jewish community. Every ethnic group has its far right wing (maybe that includes you). Thanks for playing.
While the repugs have the market corned on corruption...it's obvious to me that the DNC and the DLC have been bought....whom ever is behind it is playing both sides.....to the detriment of the country.
if the dems would get rid of rahm and the like, and stop fighting within....we could do something worth while....but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo........
This guy makes me sick! He plays right into the corporate-fascist agenda with this garbage.
I can understand why so many people are worried about their jobs, both here and abroad.
But what is going on now, is exactly what Rahm's corporate masters want. A large, limitless supply of cheap "terrified" labor to be exploited. They have no official status, no rights, cannot vote, and are at the mercy and whim of their employers. A republican dreamland.
Meanwhile, the coporations can pay them (low wages) under the table, avoid payroll obligations;and if they get sick, just charge it to the working class tax-payers, who will also pay the lions share of their children's education.
I am all for allowing immigrants to work here if need be. Just pay them a livable wage, and give them some benefits so they can give their families a better life - without destroying the middle-class that already exists (or use to) in this country.
But that will not happen, because what the corporate-fascist elite really want, is to displace our middle class with whoever will work the cheapest. Workers rights? We don't need no stinking workers rights! Somebody somewhere will work for .5$ and hour.
Exploit the exploited. Just another day in repuke & DLC land. God how I loathe these smug, evil bastards.
Stop flooding Mexico with cheap agricultural products from the US (made cheap by the importation of cheap labor) and the flood of illegal immigrants will grind to a trickle. When we price domestic farmers out of their market, they have to look elsewhere for gainful employment. It makes sense for them to come here where the goods they used to produce are being made.
Snowball @ 8:
You hit this right on the money, Snowball.
As for Rahm Emanuel, he's IS a right-winger.
hareli @ 14:
Ok, I get it. Sorry if I slammed you in my above comment. Just don't let the corporatists take your eye off the ball.
BTW, it's no secret that there exists a confluence of interests between American oligarchy and the Jewish hard right. That's a given that they have a commonality of interests. Just let's not put the cart before the horse and assume that American oligarchs are being controlled like puppets on a string by a minority group of ultra nationalist ethnic chauvinist Jews. Their interests coincide for now, but one does not necessarily control the other.
Now pick someone to run against him, yes it's 2 yrs away but who cares. Other wise talks cheap.
Jo6pac
I don't want to hold Emmanuel accountable; I want to hold him underwater.
Carl Gordon @ 3 "The philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach based his theory of religion in large part upon the idea of projection, i.e., the idea that an anthropomorphic deity is the outward projection of man's anxieties and desires."
Tell that to Islam, which directly opposes this concept of an anthropomorphic deity -- why the two giant Buddhas have been blown up. Most forms of Buddhism don't accept anthropomorphic deity either. Native American religions are not anthropomorphic, either. And neither were the beliefs of Deism such as were held by many of the Founders.
Religion as a term is far too broad to make generalizations such as those of Feuerbach.
"Religion is consciousness of the infinite." This statement by Feuerbach would be embraced by Sufis, and many others.
"The soul of the Democratic party"?
Are you joking? You uber-libs with your white guilt aren't the soul, heart, or brains of the party. In case you haven't noticed, the people have spoken on this issue. Elliot Spitzer has destroyed his approval rating in NY with this bullshit.
You wonder why the Dems are always so easy to beat? Because they tend to lead with their chin. Sticking your neck out for liberal ideals like 'compassionate immigration policy' while the core of the party is worried about their jobs, healthcare, and a deadly occupation of Iraq, is just plain arrogant and short-sighted.
Buy a clue you Ivory-tower Democrats; the rest of us aren't with you on this one.
Tim L @ 20:
I don't know what planet you live on but you modern day Archie Bunkers certainly don't speak for anything but a very small minority in the Democratic party. You may arrogantly think otherwise but if you blow your head out of your ass maybe you'll get a better perspective.
Judgmental and opinionated clowns like you are most definitely the problem, not the solution.
Wow, it's true. Democrats are really this desperate.
These "Desperate people" represent the status quo which is an utter failure. They are scared shitless that their corporatist, bankrupt philosophy will become irrelevant. And it should---immediately.
I love it when hyenas eat each other. Go guys, GO!!!
Emanuel has more smarts than all you jackasses put together. The Democrat party will succeed exactly to the extent that it stands up for working class AMERICANS against the Bush/Wall Street Journal/corporate importation of cheap, third world, union busting, taxpayer subsidized labor.
BMW 528:
Hahahahahahahaha
Hello, pot? This is the kettle.
Snowball @ 8:
you covered it extremely well.
NoGWBpolicyleftinplace @ 12:
rahm is DCCC, aka corporatist
DSCC is corporatist
DLC is corporatist
get rid of them and the problem goes away.
Open borders would fullfill the Reagan dream of ultra-low wages ever dropping because of an endless pool of cheap/cheaper labor. It does nice things for the bottom line, and for the shareholders, too.
F Rahm and his Tancredo posters on his bedroom walls
Why is corporate America for open borders?
Because they'd rather lie, cheat and steal than pay American citizens American wages for American work.
Why hire American unionized workers when you can hire illegals for half of what they need to survive, and force working class Americans to make up the difference with taxes for the welfare, food stamps, section eight housing vouchers etc.?
The open borders crowd are corporate America's favorite useful idiot/ ass whores.
LOL @ 26:
Is that right? Are you one of those simpleton assclowns that think that complex problems have simple solutions? Wake the hell up, Archie.
bmw 528 @ 32:
Is that right? Are you one of those simpleton assclowns that think that complex problems have simple solutions? Wake the hell up, Archie.
It's truely unfortunate, but some people like to make simple problems needlessly complex because it absolves them from the responsibility of making difficult choices. It's also quite unfortunate, but some people also think that insults are viable argumentation points. So sad.
Let me get this straight. Bush and Cheney want to flood America with ignorant, unskilled third world stoop laborers subsidized by working class Americans' tax dollars to benefit their Wall Street puppet masters, but Rahm Emanuel is the "corporatist"?
Have you gotten a check from the RNC yet? You've certainly earned it.
Carl Gordon @ 3:
Carl, God does not want to sodomize you; you have to find a dildo and get over yourself; you are not that hot.
Nietzsche ... who contrary to his own advice and caveat became a monster AND was destroyed by the other monsters he encountered.
There is great joy beside sin to be found on this Earth; it's called virtue ... look into it.
TOH
BTW, it’s no secret that there exists a confluence of interests between American oligarchy and the Jewish hard right. That’s a given that they have a commonality of interests. Just let’s not put the cart before the horse and assume that American oligarchs are being controlled like puppets on a string by a minority group of ultra nationalist ethnic chauvinist Jews. Their interests coincide for now, but one does not necessarily control the other.
So do we have to choose between bigotry toward Jews and Hispanics? I choose not to play.
I need to point out something to most of you. If you're with Bush on an issue, chances are extremely good that you're on the wrong side of the issue.
Good for you, C&L, for going after this. Bravo!
Snowball @ 16:
Snow, I dont even think its a group of ultra nationalist ethnic chauvinist Jews. It's Rahm Emanuel. Every single thing he rahms through (sorry for that pun) is neither in the interest of the party, or this country. Read Trade Fights. His actions under the Clinton admin opened up the entire Israeli defense contractor, telecommunications, and security businesses . . . and that is recognized in Israel. Americans would never have put up with the degree of this outsourcing, especially in the area of national defense, without his efforts. Dont forget, he made $18 million in less than two years after Clinton left office. Payback. And if this Clinton wins, he'll be in there again. You can call me cynical, but you can't call me wrong on this.
It's amazing how the Democrats have messed up (once again) the immigrant issue. Let us tell the truth. We want the illegal immigrants, we need them. For detailed discussion see
randomabsurdities.wordpress.com
What is the alternative to these people who produce our food? Starvation? If that is what we want let us admit it. Otherwise we have to put a rational policy into place.
It's refreshing to see that the Hard Left has finally found an issue they can fully agree with George Bush and Karl Rove on.
And they said it wasn't possible.
Qwinn
Illegals voting is ?
Who's got the link of that Dem operative showing illegals how to fill out the voter registration form?
Illegals, the dead, and family pets are core Dem voters.
#40 asks "who will produce our food...Starvation?"
Farm labor is 6% of what you pay for produce in the grocery store. Corporate agriculture could pay American workers TWICE as much as illegal aliens and your $1.00 head of lettuce would cost you a big fat friggin' $1.06. Can you handle that?
Ask yourself how America survived without "starvation" from 1776 to 1990 without taxpayer subsidized wetback labor.
Open borders from the third world into a first world country with a social safely net is nothing less than working class taxpayer subsidization of the labor costs of multi national corporate scumbags who'd rather lie, cheat, steal and break the law than pay American wages to American citizens for American work.
Rahm Emanuel knows it. The American people know it. How brain dead dumb are you if you haven't figured it out yet?
This is a losing issue for democrats if they really truly wish to make it theirs. The fact that the initial post contains a few references to winning the latino voting bloc is telling that this has nothing to do with caring about immigrants but rather about winning elections. I am a latino. My mother came to this country lawfully, went through the process to get her green card lawfully and after 15 years was granted citizenship. Don't discount the large block of us latinos who went through the process legally and have no respect for those who do not follow the law. We can actually vote. Those who are here illegally can't. Democrats should stop fooling themselves that this is a slam dunk issue to lock up yet another minority block.
It is obvious the kook wing of the democrat party, represented here, has no clue about how middle class America is effected by illegal immigration. Through skyrocketing health care costs passed to us by hospitals who are forced to treat illegals, to overcrowded, dumbed down schools, destroyed neighborhoods, and anarchy on the roads, everyday Americans are forced to deal with lawbreakers who are coddled by the media and courted by left-wingers for votes. If you don't think jobs are taken by illegals, you are complete idiots and will lose the working man's and woman's votes. YOu would sell your soul for illegal votes, and the rest of the country will turn the other way.
You like to think of yourself as "progressive". You like to think you support American "working families". But lo and behold, on this issue, you're standing with George Herbert Walker "new world order" Bush, his mildly retarded son, the Business Round Table, the Chamber of Commerce and the Wall Street Journal editorial page.
That is what is known as a "clue" that you aren't thinking clearly.
To Alex @ 45
I am Latino and I think you are not representative of our community, moreover, you are a small minority that might live in some random suburb. Look at Pew Hispanic research Center reports about the current Latino population, about half of it are people born abroad, and also half about the latino elecotrate. This part of the electorate, like myself, have family members or friends who are undocumented, and we support them through rational immigrant policy, not racism and rah emmanuel's tactics
bmw 528 @ 21:
Hey Fucktard, you got any data to back up your claim that I'm in the minority on this subject? ANY? No, you don't, because YOU are talking out your ass. Stupid, arrogant fucks like you seem to think that you can speak for the party, when in fact, you're waaaay out on a limb by yourself.
Come back when you have some numbers to back up your bullshit you pompous ass.
To robert O'Rourke at 45
"Ask yourself how America survived without “starvation” from 1776 to 1990 without taxpayer subsidized wetback labor."
You idiot, from 1776 to 1990, america has survived exclusively through immigrant labor. Each generation comes in, gets hated on and racialized, bu thrye work hard and boost the economy and make america grow and become more middle class, then they integrate, their children become citizens, and their children vote. This happens with everyone from the germans, to irish, to italians, and now, predominantly mexicans.
The only difference with today's generation of mexicans is that we won't forget racists like you who have smack about us. O'rourke = descendant of IRISH
immigrants who probably experienced everything current immigrants are facing. oh the irony.
To Tim L at 49
Not only are you a minority in the party, you are a minority in the nation. Check out this usa today poll that came out during the immigration debate this year.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-04-18-illegal-immigrants_N.htm
jjpatriot @ 51:
Sorry, but that's bullshit. You're talking about narrowing the question to one slim facet of the debate over immigration.
Maybe you've forgotten the numbers the last time an actual bill was put forward. Read 'em and weep liar:
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/i...
Tancredo said:
There are consequences to open borders beyond the 20 million aliens who have come to take our jobs. Islamic terrorists now freely roam U.S. soil, Jihadists who froth with hate here to do as they have in London, Spain, Russia.
The price we pay for spineless politicians who refuse to defend our borders against those who come to kill.
I live in California, in a city where the largest heroin bust in the state went down about a year ago. Arrested with the record haul of the dangerous drug were armed illegal immigrant drug lords. That didn't happen thousands, or even hundreds of miles away. It happened within walking distance of my home. Vote for who you want, but there is nothing untruthful or exaggerated in Tom's statement above. It is the reality in my slice of blue state America. Just 30 miles down the freeway from Los Angeles, the queen of sanctuary cities nationwide.
"Islamic terrorists now freely roam U.S. soil" and get jobs at the CIA and FBI. Yeah. Alarmist he is, that Mr. Tancredo
And don't even preach to me about health care, when my grandson had a two hour wait at the emergency room. Everyone in front of him in line spoke Spanish.
But there is an upside for Progressives, illegal immigrants, voting illegally helped elect Loretta Sanchez to the US Congress, so you ignore the 20 or so on death row for murders committed in my blue state.
I know writing about this seems hateful to some of you, but Tancredo is right on the issue of illegal immigration, a process that most Progressives won't even name. A process that changed my community for the worse, illegally, while Washington was busy with other things, like Iran, the Berlin wall, Kuwait, Kosovo and Iraq. Is that what you pay them for?
#40 said we "need" illegal immigrants and he is wrong. We might "need" more legal immigrants, but no one "needs", or deserves criminal activity like forgery, smuggling and human trafficking in their community. During a sting that busted a child porn ring in Los Angels years ago the majority of those caught were illegal immigrants. I certainly don't "need" that.
Tom Tancredo is not going to get the nomination. I will look closely, and probably vote for, who he endorses. It won't save my community, that is gone with the wind.
More facts for those uber-libs and "Latinos-first" people:
A Rasmussen Report Poll conducted from October 24-25th of 800 likely voters found that:
51% opposed the DREAM Act (a form of amnesty for former and present illegal alien students) concept
68% believe the passage of the bill would encourage more illegal immigration in the future.
71% believe that illegal immigrants should not qualify for in-state tuition rates at colleges and universities.
77 % oppose making drivers' licenses available to illegal immigrants.
Crooks and Liars is wrong on so many issues, but thanks for having the guts to allow open comments.
In the US status by birth should be determined by the status of the parent: Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Work Visa, Illegal - the child should inherit the parent's status.
Employers of illegals should be subject to an increasing scale of penalties up to and including massive fines, prison time and seizure of their business and personal assets.
Illegals should have a brief grace period, say 60 days from date of passage of an appropriate law, in which to liquidate assets and leave. After that time they will have their assets seized and be deported if caught.
State and local law enforcement should be required to determine the immigration status of all persons arrested. Illegals should be transferred to federal immigration authorities when their stay with state and local authorities is concluded. Bail should be disallowed for illegals regardless of the level of their offense.
Border security should be improved. Anyone firing on US Border Patrol should be responded to with deadly force. That includes gangs, Mexican law enforcement or Military.
Landlords should be required to verify the immigration status of renters. Knowingly renting to illegals should result in an increasing scale of fines, imprisonment and asset forfeiture.
I am not a Republican or a NeoCon and I am not a conservative but I am a nationalist.
welcome to the world of organized blogging.
Did you know that anti-immigrant organizations have teams of organized bloggers. SO when any article or blog comment about immigration is posted, they are all emailed and then told to comment with their hateful muck. I wonder who are the people in this thread who are the hired guns.
Crooks and Liars, you have been infiltrated. so much for a progressive blog.
Tim L @ 49:
Boastful chest thumpers like you that think your opinionated bullshit is the majority opinion are a real pain in the ass. If you have any credible data to suggest that your "viewpoint" is in fact the majority view I look forward to seeing it. But I'm sure it will never appear since you boast that your opinion is fact without offering proof.
Until then, stop beating your chest, Tarzan and head over to Redstate where your racist America First garbage is welcome.
jjpatriot @ 57:
You are trying to use the Bush (scum-sucking corporate fascist whore) trick of conflating two unrelated issues. To state that our country is within its rights to determine who should come here and under what terms is not anti-immigrant. Here are a few amusing immigration facts for you:
Illegal immigration is ~56% from Mexico
Legal immigration from Mexico is ~150% of illegal immigration from Mexico?
I haven't heard anyone saying we should stop legal immigration
I am not part of an organized blogger bunch
I think for myself
I write for myself
I do not see anything hateful in stating that we should exercise some degree of control over our borders and immigration.
You will accuse anyone who does not agree with you of being part of some anti-immigrant group or of being a pawn rather than a thinker.
If you would care to discuss politics have at it. I have been VERY politically aware since I was 10 years old. I would be willing to bet that I am far more progressive than you.
Your La Raza folks pull the same crap on their website: they conflate opposition to driver's licenses for illegal immigrants with bias against immigrants. Guess what: I have no problem with legal residents getting driver's licenses. As long as you can pass the tests have at it. Oh yeah, the tests should be exclusively in English because I don't want my tax dollars compensating for someone's lack of effort to learn the language of their adopted country. And oh yeah, the street signs are in English: I don't want to pay for or look at more square footage to make the signs multilingual. Opportunity seekers who come to the U.S. ought to be willing to learn the language or be locked out of some of the privileges.
Is that anti-immigrant? Guess what? NO IT IS NOT! All I am saying is that if you want to come here seeking opportunity there is a way to do it: we make the rules, it's our country, don't be asking for special treatment. Fuck amnesty.
JJpatriot said, "from 1776 to 1990, America has survived exclusively through immigrant labor"
I know a little about US history and would love to debate the point that immigrant labor was necessary for our "survival". Let us assume for the sake of argument that your statement is true.
Immigrant is not the same as illegal immigrant.
The opposition wants to end illegal immigration, not legal immigration.
The only group I know that wants to stop all immigration are the zero population folks, and they are left wing.
Simple facts.
Not hard to understand.
Unless you are part of a community based reality.

[Deleted. Don't be so hard on yourself, 'Big'-Sitemonitor]
I guess those of you demonizing anyone who questions whether illegal immigrants are good for the country think you're taking the moral high ground. For you, I have a question:
How much sooner do you think the civil rights victories of the 50s and 60s would have happened if the great wave of immigration from 1880-1920 hadn't occurred? Imagine all those immigrants never came - whose door do you suppose Ford and U.S. Steel would have had to knock on and offer a fair market wage and the respect due an employee? Hint: They are presently a core constituency of the Democratic Party, descended from people brought to this country in bondage.
The basic argument for amnesty is that illegal immigrants have somehow earned the right to citizenship because they supposedly work hard, and gosh, we can really use hard workers. Bully if true. But they're competing against blacks for jobs, and I think blacks in the real world, as opposed to the upper echelons of the liberal establishment, know it. I claim that American blacks are far more entitled than Mexicans to benefit from a tight labor market. Note that we're talking about Mexican citizens, not Mexican-Americans. Who here is going to disagree with that?
If all the illegals went home, and companies had to hire black Americans, here's what would happen: Blacks would immediately see large gains both economically and socially. They wouldn't need social programs any more, and therefore would no longer have to vote for Democrats who favor abortion rights, gay marriage, and other things obnoxious to most blacks. So maybe it's not such a mystery after all why the Democratic Party is pro-illegal-immigrant.
So...... you serve the same master as Bill O'?
Artemus @ 64:
Artemus, I'm a middle-aged white guy with an ivy league education and a comfortable California lifestyle and I couldn't agree with you more about the potential positive results in the black community of an aggressive approach to illegal immigration. 20 million people is obviously enough to depress wages.
I'm not quite as sure as you about the co-dependency analysis with the Democratic party though. I think it's simpler than that: the corporate money fed into the campaign machine demands the cheap, compliant labor source in return.
I am opposed to any sort of amnesty regardless of national origin. Mexico supplies about 56% percent of the illegal immigration...that means if I made the rules some Europeans would be headed home too...not just "brown people" as the La Raza bunch likes to label the target of the imagined racism.
Every time Rahm stinks up the Senate with his votes he
appears on talk shows or interviews as if to say
"I dare you to say one word to this most important Senator.
I freaking dare you to imply, hint or in any way call me to
account. If you do I will remind you as to WHO I AM...FOR I
AM RAHM THE MERCILESS".

Sounds like an Egyptian priest-god
I trust Rahm about as far as I can throw him. He's an IDF infiltrator hiding in plain sight.
