Randy Rhodes in Detroit: Was Conyers listening to the Kucinich/Cheney Impeachment issue?

Curt Guyette (Metro Times) reported that John Conyers had a few words with Randy Rhodes after she gave a keynote speech in Detroit—Peace Action’s 50th anniversary–and the topic of their chat was: Impeaching Dick Cheney! Go to the 19th minute of the vid…

C&Ler Carol emailed me this article:

After her talk, Rhodes knelt alongside Conyers’ chair and they had what looked to be a friendly chat that ended with an embrace. We then collared the always-congenial Conyers and asked him what was going through his mind as he heard Rhodes endorse the call for impeachment and saw the crowd of lefties stand and give that endorsement thunderous applause.

“I can’t tell you,” responded Conyers.

We pressed him, pointing out what he’d told us in the past about impeachment being counterproductive. But that was before Republicans voted to make this an issue, Conyers explained.

“Events have changed the situation,” he said.

But, if what Rhodes told us is accurate, it’s up to us to force the hand of Democrats on this issue. As longtime activist Al Fishman told the assembled crowd at the Westin, the name of the group being celebrated had two components, peace and action…read on

I talked to Curt Gayette today and he thought we have a chance to move the impeachment ball forward….Email and call John Conyers office early and often and ask him to proceed with the bipartisan support of Kucinich’s impeach Dick Cheney resolution! Phone: (313) 961-5670 Phone: (202) 225-5126

Bernie Sanders and Russ Feingold have been saying on the radio that they haven’t been hearing from the public on Kucinich’s proposal so they don’t think we want Shooter impeached…If they get calls all week we may get some movement on this…Go here to find your Rep’s info…

I have always wondered why the WarPigs were allowed to stay in power, last night I ran across this little jewel:

‘Regarding President Bush’s commitment to the sanctity of constitutional processes, Congressman John Olver expressed the prevailing view in government circles when he told twenty of his constituents at a private meeting in Massachusetts on July 5, 2007, that he could not support a movement to impeach Bush. According to an attendee, the reason the Congressman gave was that, “The President would declare a national emergency, institute martial law, and suspend the 2008 elections.”’

Here we go. Here. We. Go.

The Republicans say they want a fair airing of the issue? Good! Any fair-minded person would. Surely, they’d like to see Bush and Cheney vindicated by history and this is one way to accomplish that, if you really feel they are being unfairly sniped at.

The Democrats want to bottle up the issue? Of course they do. Heaven forbid they should have to actually make a case with the other side their protected by procedure in their right to make the counterargument. It’s obviously much better for the party to keep sniping at the administration on the campaign trail.

But, see, again, this is where we must stop allowing both sides to just use rhetoric WITHOUT ACTUALLY BACKING IT THE FUCK UP.

So, good. Democrats say that Bush and Cheney are corrupt and perhaps criminal. Republicans say the Democrats are distorting the issue.

Take it to the crucible. Both sides should want it.

I don’t expect Cheney or Bush to be convicted. I can bloody well count. And, of course, once you get into the ring, your opponent is going to land some blows, no doubt.

But, the question is, what will hurt your more in the long run? Standing up for what’s right? Or ducking the fight altogether?

“I’m with you,” Boortz agreed. He said graciously, “I hope that Randi Rhodes is back on the air soon. Sean, I think you agree with me. We need liberal, left-wing talk radio out there. Now, not everyone can do it as well as Alan does, but we need it and I want her back on the air as soon as possible.”

Hannity agreed perfunctorily before hastening to continue with his smears. “Listen, I’m with you. Let them have their stations. They already have the rest of the media.”

Reason they need liberal left wing radio is because without it their careers would crash and burn overnight.

Where would Rush be if Clinton was never president. Probably spinning discs at some radio station for $500 a week.

Which vote? You mean when the Rethugs voted to bring down the office of the presidency and drag the nation through the mud over the impeachment of Clinton over Lewinsky?

Hypocritical lowlife common thugs that they are.

Again, I’d like to see a thorough investigation in committee (or at least a patient attempt to break through the stonewalling) and have this one done right… yes, even if it takes a few months.

The more they either uncover in committee (or show that Cheney is covering his ass knowingly against crimes) the more likely the Repubs are to vote for the impeachment.

We’ll see more action after the Dem nomination, I’m sure. Of course, Dick has already achieved his goal for the most part of restoring the powers of the presidency to those of a monarch despite Hamdan v. Rumsfeld.

In a sad way, that old bastard Tory Dick is really no different than those that worship Brittany Spears for lack of an American royalty. It is a sad and pathetic insecurity, and an unwillingness to appreciate what the Constitution really affords us, in my opinion.

So long as we don’t tell him he will have to go into exile after he quits, because otherwise he may not enjoy spending the money from San Quentin. Come to think of it, he’s probably already getting $50 billion from certain profiteers to stay. Might have to have a bidding war between the citizens and corporations…

How about we just declare a War On Bush?

If yo know that crimes have been committed and you don’t exercise your power to prosecute the crooks, then you are an accessory to the crimes. It’s that simple. Well if that is your only test, wouldn’t Edwards fit you? Union guy, says no on illegal drivers licences…

And lay off of Conyers, he said way back in august:

“Nancy Pelosi has impeachment ‘off the table,’ but that’s off her table, it is not off John Conyers’ table,” the Michigan Democrat said during a town hall meeting in his district Tuesday. “Nancy Pelosi, who I actually supported, cannot prevent me from introducing an impeachment resolution against, well I’ve got a long list of people who are eligible.”

“I want you to know that I have no reticence, no reluctance, no hesitation to use the tool of impeachment … whenever I feel that it is appropriate,” Conyers said. “I only wish that I could be moved by a lot of people coming to my office.”

“I understand the politics of impeachment,” Conyers said. “But we have something going on now that we’ve never had before.”

Meaning Democrats that refuse to support impeachment, despite the obvious appropriateness of it. He is absolutely ready to go when there is a realistic chance of success.

He is not the enemy here. Seek out those “other” Democrat DINOs instead. Apply pressure. Repeat.

casam Says:

JerryO regarding the link and quote in # 1. I recall, but can’t find it anywhere now, a quote Pelosi made before the “off the table” rule. She said she can’t impeach because bush will “escalate” the war. I do think a threat of some kind was made, most likely by Cheney.

Finally Rhodes Connects The Dots

It was liberating to see someone acknowledging the past events of this country as real and a matter of fact and not debate. We have been living in a fog of unprecedented apathy. Fact after fact has been overlooked, law after law has been broken, and the people in this country have failed to place events in their proper perspective.

The war, the killing of innocent men, women, and children, and the untold ransacking of our nation’s treasury have been the norm for the last five years. Randy Rhodes did the unspeakable, the unacceptable; she spoke the truth. With the blinders off, she can connect all the crimes of this president and see the obvious non rational way this criminal administration have been running this country. How refreshing this was to see Rhodes stand up for the truth and hear her tell the truth.

If one of the Democratic candidates would speak this kind of truth to the Democratic Party, they would label him a extremest. Case in point, look at where Denis Kucinich is within the Democratic presidential hopefuls: Dead last. Does this speak to the our denial concerning what this administration has done, or is the elephant in the room too pink? It sounds like we need a truth Party. Not an extreme Party; we need someone like Rhodes who is willing to let the facts drive them. If I never see a debate concerning the breaking of a law already on the books, it will be too soon. Its time for a truthful change. Thank you Randy Rhodes.

Joseph

Congressman Conyers made the statement that he supported Impeachment before the Republicans made it an issue.

I want to ask him and I will call his office to ask, when if ever the good Congressman ever depended on Republican votes.?

I’m really getting sick and tired of Democrats making this weak excuses of worrying about what the Republicans are thinking because as they can see, over and over and over, they do not give a dame what the Democrats think or the American people and if they are just to scared to do their jobs, then step down and let someone that will, do it.

These people are simply distroying the lives of American people and to us, that is worth more then him or any of the rest of them staying in office to keep this shurade going.

We have a whole year to put up with Bush and all the crap he can pull, and that is a long time to endure him and these right wing nuts.

I am personally for them blocking the funds, more then the Impeachment for the reason it will cripple him and the right wing red necks in the house and senate.

NWonitsway Says:

I really hope people can start to see the state of our country now. (the world for that matter.) Did anyone catch the debate last night? Do you really want to vote for ANY of those people? Republicans are the scum of the earth but so are Democrats. Does the constitution mean anything to anyone anymore? I would say that Ron Paul speaks the truth but he will not distance himself from the Republican Party. (Why would he want to hold on to this corrupt party? Why does anyone want to hold on to the corrupt Democrats? How long can they spit in our faces before we stand up and say enough? People are not made to server their government; government is made to server the people. If your government no longer serves you, you get rid of that government or you will be put in bondage.)

Do we really still believe that if we could only get a Democrat back into the oval office that everything will be O.K.? There are two sides to a coin; you have been seeing the dirty “tails” side of the coin lately, just because one side looks better than the other doesn’t mean all parts equal the whole coin.

We the American people have had our civil liberties eroded all in the name of security, but I think we all know that we are no safer now than the day before we were attacked on well, you know “that day.”

The current administration is positioning themselves to strike Iran as we speak, the day draws near and you know it, you can feel the tension rising.

What are our so called “leaders” doing to stop this? Nothing. Key Democrats have been bought and paid for and you know it. They are now on the pay roll of the Military Industrial Complex.

If we have spent 1.6 -1.9 trillion dollars on this war so far, what do we have to show for it? Nothing. (Nothing but death, destruction, lies and more lies. Broken families, broken dreams, hatred, disgust, sadness, separation, heart break, loss of freedom and the loss of our way. All this is been bought for with our hard earned tax dollars. Heck it isn’t even paid for yet is it? Just tack it onto our 9 trillion dollar debt, or is that now 10.6 trillion? Oh who is counting anyway? I wonder if that 10.6 trillion includes the 2.3 trillion that Rumsfeld reported missing on 9/10/01? )

Why is this, you know the answer. , because it is all by design. The beast walks among us now as we speak, and we are all acting like blind fools.

If you would be honest with yourself you would be able to allow yourself to see that we are all being lied to, we are all being manipulated and we are all in essence being controlled.

There is but one way to freedom my friends, there is but one way to truth. Seek it, and when you find it never look back.

41
Luke Says:

Once more the Republican Party doesn’t have significant members of Congress who are legitimately wondering whether Bush’s decisions are moral or even lawful. I’ve written this before … when historians write of this era, what they will find appalling and disgusting is that the Republican Party lined up like lemmings behind the most unpopular President in history to support policies that were a disaster. They will wonder aloud about the foolishness and utter stupidity. Yet, this is what’s happening. We have Republicans in Congress who have no moral compass and who do nothing except obstruct any real progress.
