Geez, these guys are jumping ship in a big way. How many GOPers is that now that have either left congress or are leaving congress? Anybody got a tally? The Dems could end up winning back seats from attrition more than anything.

You’re not gone already?
History will remember you for being the Senate Majority Leader when a President was impeached for receiving a blow job in the oval office…….
………..what a legacy Senator……………..

Bullwinkle Says:

Personally, I’d rather see Lott and his ilk perp-walked out of Congress instead of letting ‘em resign and go free. But so long as they’re gone, I guess. Unfortunately, there’s still the long and daunting task of rebuilding the nation they’re leaving in smoldering ruins.

Did anyone catch Erin Burnett on Joe Scarborough’s show this AM. She referred to French P.M. as Rudy’s man-crush, and said that noone could blame him for having a man-crush when looking at Sarcozy (sp?). Then she said that she was talking about the man on the right, not the monkey in the middle.

When Scarborough feigned ignorance as to who she was referring, she was that not talkiing about German P.M. Angela Merkle, who was on the left. Willie Geis (sp?) then exclaimed that she must be talking about “my president” or words to that effect.

Man, oh man. Who would have guessed she (working for CNBC) is opposed to the Chimp!!!

I heard on the news that he couldn’t raise enough …something to do with lobbiest money…in short…the lobbiest have decided not to back this losing horse…and he knows it.I don’t see this clown giving up easily…..unless he knows there is no way for him to win, plus he see’s the writing on the wall. The Repug party is going to take a beating in the next election….so he’s getting out …to avoid the shame.

did a cold wind from Alaska help Trent on his way?

Not exactly. Things haven’t been quite as rosy ever since Lott criticized Bush’s handling of Katrina.

True. But as usual with these republicans he tried to to portray a new image. But politics were the same as usual for the republicans -thats why they gave him the #2 spot. It obviously failed.

Does this mean they are all just giving up and heading home…the Republican Revolution was a great party and now it’s over. Don’t most of these politicians keep on going like Strom Thurmond. If not, does this mean that they know they’ve milked this ride for everything it was worth and are now heading home to enjoy the spoils of their efforts over the past decade?

turns out Lott has to wait a year before he starts lobbying. He’s going where the real money is…as a Lobbiest….go figure.

Dude Says:

Whatever happened to Larry Flynt and his campaign to find those with hypocritical indiscretions? Could some of the critters be making deals to keep their secrets, secret?

Could this be because some gop presidential candidate has asked him to run as his veep if he should get the nomination.
A good old southern boy running with a previous New York mayor, perhaps. Jeez, I hope not, but seems stranger things have happened.

35
mudshark Says:

He’ll become a lobbyist…… right in time for the next Dem Prez…..there thinking way ahead now, they know there is nothing they can do to win this next election…so their already going to work to make things difficult for the next Prez

Might help Rudy’s “Southern strategy” — but that’s about it. Lott is a liability everywhere else.

37
Indigowatcher Says:

Lott still needs to be prosecuted for his complicity in the whole Iraq thing, backing Bush up on EVERYTHING! The man’s a nasty racist little piece of filth, an embarrassment to all of us here in the US. When are they going to outlaw lobbying, by the way?

Trent, we love your work–you’ve been a real team player and a significant contributor to the success we’ve enjoyed in bringing the project to completion.

We have some objectives in mind over the next twelve to eighteen months for which we’d appreciate your continued enthusiasm and commitment.

Options: your support and cooperation; a dignified, secure, and complete retirement, or something else.

Enjoy your retirement, then. Wishing you the best.

I also heard that from the Morning Joe show this morning. It might have been Chris Matthews who said it. Jesus, would that be frightening or what, if they actually won?

IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

From TP: “UPDATE IV: “While the exact reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. That law would require Senators to wait two-years before entering the lucrative world of lobbying Congress.””

47
mudshark Says:

with the Calif Counts antics it’s obvious they’re going to pull some kind of BS…with the GOP’s track record…there is no way that they should win this election….unless the steal it….again.

Regarding comment #46, Leave it to a repub not to let any opportunity for more money pass them by. I would think the people who voted for him would be pissed that he’s walking away from them for his own benefit in the billfold.

fkfk Says:

But the real question is WHY? Why so many Repugs jumping ship? Do they know something we don’t? Do they know Bush is a lunatic and is about to push the button? Some people suggest that it’s because they think they’ll get their asses handed to them in 2008 so they’re getting out while they can. But the problem with that theory is that there is obviously no shortage of morons to vote for these people so why are so many of them leaving?

WHY?

I don’t know but I do know that no repub ever does anything that is good for the country as a whole. Any time one of them does something like this, I never feel good about it until the whole story is told and usually I don’t feel any better then

My thoughts exactly. Are they merely rats deserting a sinking ship or is there something much more frightening that they know is coming in the next year? How many of them have land in Paraguay near the new bush compound?

Frist is the cat-doc.

I don’t buy the K-street explanation as sufficient, although it might be a contributing factor. I think that either the investigation into the shenanigans in Alaska or the Larry Flynt story have something to do with precipitating his departure. Still, David Vitter appears to be weathering the storm, so there must be something more than that going on?

54
Awaken Says:

the poster at 46 is probably right about Lott wanting to cash in before stricter lobbying laws kick in.
