Another day, another sick Bush policy:

Continuing its recent spree of criminality in the alleged pursuit of law enforcement, the Bush Justice Department formally advised a British Court last week that it is fully entitled to kidnap foreigners (i.e., Britons) off the street around the world and carry them off to secret prisons. The claim was formerly thought to relate to terrorists. But no longer. Now the Bush Justice Department asserts the right to kidnap anyone it suspects of a crime...read on

Rudy Giuliani would be proud.

Digby:

I thought it was outrageous that they were doing this to suspected terrorists. But Europeans wanted for white collar crime? They've turned our country into the god damned mafia...read on

Frist! In Soviet America, we kidnap your citizens and then publish hysterical rants about their EBIL MUSLIM EBIL NATURE LULZ!!!'

And if ya don't like it? TAZERS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

With allies like the US, who needs enemies?

The US has asserted this right since 1992, by the way.

I'm guessing this practice must violate treaties and extradition agreements "around the world."

Claiming you have a right to grab people off the streets of another country didn't fly when Israel grabbed people in South America.

and the people they were grabbing were nazi's.

Remember Hilter was elected too. It just keeps getting stranger and very few are paying attention. It can't happen here, Oh sure and coming soon to a town near you.

Actually, since the Civil War's end in the late 1860s, when former Confederates became nationalized Europeans, Washington has asserted this right. Now that they're the biggest dog on the block they can actually do it.

Actually, Hitler was placed in power by Hindenburg due to a massive victory for the NSDAP in the Reichstag in 1933, which made them the majority party, but with still less than half the vote. Shades of 2000, perhaps with Bush being placed in office, but he wasn't elected.

Bush=Shitler.

With all due respect to Digby; our country has BEEN a mafia. Remember the Drug War that was covered recently on C&L, that's been going on for at least 70 years now, and don't even get me started on the Federal Reserve and the creation of money. The mask has come off now, that's all.

Every single day, as I grow older, I get more and more convinced that it's not just our Freedoms that "they" hate...........

How about you? Ever get the uneasy feeling that there's more to this than just that?

Talk to a lawyer on this rendition stuff. There are two requirements for rendition to be lawful:

1. All other options must be exhausted;

2. The prisoner must be treated humanely, not abused.

The US appears to assert the first, and pretend the second does not apply.

Israel did the same thing with Eichmann in South America in the early sixties.

It's amazing to think that America believes it can export its sovereignty
to another land and do such things as only terrorists (and Mossad with
Eichmann) do.

Attn: America

What goes around, comes around.

One other thing on a long winding road to tyranny. I think we've had enough.

From September 12th on, I've known that our freedoms had nothing to do with it. I used to think it was half Exxon/Mobil and half American Idol, but the ratio changes a lot.

Well, you know the British have been historically very hostile and uncooperative with our Glorious Struggle Against Brown Violent Jihadist Muslim Evil-Doers.

If we keep up this shit much longer, pretty soon it will be OUR asses being invaded.

Question: if our government is committing illegal acts in other countries, can't the UN or our allies or SOMEBODY come out and say, "No more or we'll prosecute your ass"?

What this administration is brazenly doing is reminiscent of the 1960s cult hit The Prisoner, when Patrick McGoohan's character was kidnapped and ended up in The Village and was never told the reasons why he was abducted. Still Nancy Pelosi continues to assert that impeachment is off the table. One wonders what it will take for Pelosi to change her mind? Perhaps if her fellow Democrats were kidnapped and whisked off to another country, then Pelosi might agree that an egregious wrong has been committed and that it might finally be time to boot the scoundrels out of office.

This has to be the most paranoid administration in the history of the United States. Everyone is a suspect in their eyes. They feel so guilty about something that they think everyone is out to get them.

Either that or they are so chicken shit they think they have to beat up on everyone so no one will beat up on them.

Isn't it about time for The Hague to indict Cheney and Shrubbie for crimes against humanity? Isn't it overdue for the world courts (as opposed to the court of world opinion) to declare that the U.S. is a rogue nation and dump tons of economic sanctions on us?

Oh, yeah, I forgot: we owe everybody in the world money. They can't.

Honestly, I suspect the rest of the known universe is as anxious to be rid of these m*therf***ers as we are.

I wonder if "Axis of Evil" countries might be tempted to try this on Bush & Cheney after they retire to their respective ranches!

So, based on this premise, do other countries have the right to enter the United States and apprehend suspects off our streets or will we expect that other countries will respect our sovereignty and/or go through traditional channels and methods?

Every day a new Pinochetism is revealed about the Bush junta while the beltway bumpkin reporters laugh at his jokes during pressers

I definitely would not feel bad if any of these neo-cons were kidnapped for their crimes by other countries.

Turk Meister @ 24:

At this point I doubt any other country wants anything to do with any of us. They probably wish we would shut the hell up and leave the rest of the world alone.

I just wonder how much longer the rest of the world is going to sit and watch. Sooner or later they are going to come together and declare war against us, on our soil. And since as a country we have sat on our asses and done nothing while these criminals ran rampant pillaging and murdering not only our citizens but those of other countries, we well deserve anything we get. I wouldn't have the patience that the rest of the world has shown. Hell these fascists attack other countries for oil. If we don't take them down, someone has to.

The coalition of the willing should now that a rabid dog will eventually chomp on its own tail, so taking shelter in its sphincter isn't such a wise move.

Anyone seen Tony Blair lately? I hope he enjoys his all-expenses paid decade to a quaint dungeon in Uzbekistan.

As for Bush and Cheney: you guys deserve the seventh circle of Hell, or worse, like being condemned to live in Texas.

In Australia we just Kicked prior Prime Minister John Howard out of his parliamentaryy seat, Blair has gone, now for Bush and Cheney.
We might come over and pick them up for a bit of 'waterboarding' (Now that is not torture, ask Mukasy!) to discover what they know about the 9/11 murders.
Does any one the US mind?
Mallee.
PS How about lunch; 'Pissed off Patricia'?

Henry Kissinger is a wanted man in a number of nations around the world for crimes he committed in the 70s......

Using the Bush logic, it would be perfectly fine for them to come to America and kidnap him to bring him to justice.

That would be an interesting chain of events to witness.

Add it to the frikking indictments for international warcrimes trial at the Hague... Boy, this shit's gonna be waaay better than Watergate ever was once it gets up and rollin......JD

Who do they think they are?....Dog the Bounty Hunter(yeah....he's scum too)

dothehop @ 26:

agreed.....whats good for the goose stepping,is good for the gander

Let's look at it another way. Maybe other countries will follow along, and do the same thing. When these people are brought up for war crimes, maybe there will be another country ready to pick up the crime members of this administration. The French can have Rumsfeld, and as a package deal for good measure we can include the speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi, for her keeping impeachment off the table. If they act now, they also get a cute teddy bear in time for the holidays. The perfect gifts for the neo-con person on your list. I think there is a group of people ready to kick the door down of people who question this band of yoyos. Rendition? Water boarding? The popular games of the GWB administration. Now on sale at all foreign torture sites. God, these people are too much.

Now if some foreign government would simply retrun the favor by kidnapping the war criminals in this administration.

Now I understand why you guys won't give up your guns.

The point is.....

Lawlessness breeds lawlessness.

America is a nation governed by the Rule of Law.
(Or should be.)

I would much rather see those in America's current ruling party brought to Justice here in our country for crimes committed either nationally or internationally, than have the situation spiral into another state of chaos by having them kidnapped and/or assassinated.

I do not understand why the Democrats are procrastinating prosecuting obvious Constitutional and international crimes right now, but I'm willing to wait and see how it's going to work out in the next 5 years.

And to think all this sickness is occurring because a misfit and his deranged crew need to cover their asses. It's almost as if they want to punish the world for their fuckups.

What make them think that there will be elections in 2008, or a new administration? I do not think that GWB & Co. would allow that to happen. If they did, there is a strong possibility that they may end up in prison. With the overcrowding there, can you imagine GWB, DC, & DR as roomies? Maybe the former AG will be there also. Don't drop the soap! Here comes Senator Larry Craig. The good old boys club.

Why? Because it doesn't respect the Convention against Torture, notably by returning people to their country of origin, even though they risk being mistreated there. Judge Phelan evokes the famous case of Maher Arar, whom Washington sent back to Syrian torture chambers.

More evidence for the Hague.

Your child pees on the floor. What happens if you do nothing? Your child tortures a cat. What if you do nothing? Your child burns down your house. Still you have done nothing!

Your child has a problem.

YOU ARE INSANE!

When will impeachment come?

This is bullshit, I don't believe this fucking country could get away with it, maybe only in the UK.

Digby seems upset that it's "Europeans" being nabbed. I guess it was ok when Mexican nationals were kidnapped (see: Sosa v. Alvarez-Machain and United States v. Alvarez-Machain, 124 S. Ct. 821, cert. granted, Dec. 1, 2003). U.S. courts have always held that it matters not how the accused arrives... but "Euopeans"? Horrors! They're white people!

Paul @ 43:

More evidence for the Hague.

There will no by a trial against the Bush admin in the Hague - ever. The US Congress passed the "The Hague invasion act" in 2002. By this law the US president is authorized to invade the Netherlands in the case that US military personel or elected or appointed US officials are held in The Hague.

You have got to stop making excuses and hope for foreign powers to hold your president accountable. You are in charge. You, the American people. No one else.

The world has to accept that the US has become a rogue nation. The USA is publicly announcing that it will kidnap foreigners from their countries. The USA has invaded a country that did not attack them nor did it pose an imminent threat to the US and it was not allowed by the UN Security Council. After it was realized even in the US that the reasons for invading Iraq were bogus you, the American people, did not hold your president accountable.

Because Bush is not being held accountable every following president knows he can do anything. If Giuliani becomes president with Podhoretz as the National Security Advisor the situation will not get better. It is not about the time until January 2009. It is about the time after that!

Until you impeach Bush and Cheney and install Pelosi as acting president until January 2009 and prosecute Bush, Cheney et al. for treason and give them serious sentences - the world will know that the US is a rogue nation.

We cannot do anything about this. The USA is a nuclear superpower with the by far mightiest army, navy and air force in the world. To try to invade the US and try to take out the POTUS from outside of the US will be instant suicide for every other country or Anti-US-Coalition.

The US Congress has to impeach Bush. If the members of congress do not see this suitable for their own personal political goals, you the American people will have to DEMAND from your congress man or woman that Bush has to be impeached. It is not optional. There is no alternative. "Off the table" is no acceptable answer. Because YOU are the only ones who can do something. YOU have to put more and more and more and more pressure on your congress women and men.

The Bush impeachment is BY FAR more important than the question whether Rudy Giuliani or Dennis Kucinich will be the next POTUS. Becuse the impeachment shows the next president that he will be held accountable for any high crimes he might commit.

The alternative is that the rest of the world has to acKnowledge that the USA has become an evil empire. Even if Hillary, Obama or even Kucinich will be the next president, the world will always know that because you did not have hold Bush accountable the next Giuliani/Podhoretz administration will come some day.

America is a rogue nation. Put severe pressure on YOUR congress woman or man NOW.

I think this makes perfect sense, as long as other countries and the World Court can come into the US and abduct the war criminals running the country. Freddo,Turdblossom and Rummy are all fair game now that they no longer hold appointed government positions. They can all be kidnapped off the street, beaten bloody, flown for days with a black bag over their heads, and dumped in a god forsaken hell hole in Yemen. Sorry, that's what we do. They could be escorted into a limo, flown first class to Den Hague and stay in a 5 star suite while they await trial for genocide and crimes against humanity.

The world has already accepted that. If you got out of the country, you would see that the rest of the world is literally terrified of the US. That's why China and Russia are joining their forces together. That's why European NATO nations are performing tactical maneuvers without the US. If you think that the other 6.3 billion people on the planet are going to put up with this shit forever, then think again.

Getting more and more like a limbo game all the time, isn't it?

You think they can't get any lower -- and SURPRISE! There they are, somehow squishing themselves closer to the dust bunnies on the floor.

When I read about this yesterday, I'm sure the combination of embarassment and incredulity killed brain cells.

By this "logic", or twisted version of moronic thought, that really means the entire administration and all of it's collaborators could be (or should be) held to the same.
Imagine that headline. When he lands in the Middle East, he/they is/are taken prisoner, denied any type of protection and held accountable for the war crimes he/they are committing. That wouldn't really work out too well, so why should it work for us to do? C'mon, taking foreign citizenry from foreign soil for white-collar crimes?

Indeed, when will impeachment come!

That would be the only way to convict an American for crimes against humanity.

Regarding the possibility of trial by the ICC, it is true that Bush has taken steps to prevent prosecution of Americans by the Court - "unsigning" the Rome Statute, Article 98 agreements with every country we have military assistance agreements with, etc. However, I wonder what would happen if our next president (assuming there's an election and assuming we somehow get a president who could be convinced to do this) repealed the HIA, resigned the RS, and did away with the requirement for Article 98 agreements. Is it possible to try people at the Hague for crimes in/by nations not signatory to the RS at the time, but which later became signatories? I.e., is it retroactive? If so this is one slender hope....

But really, Pelosi and co. ought to be removed from office and tried for treason IMMEDIATELY for refusing point-blank to obey their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. If you can be imprisoned for life as an accomplice to murder before/after the fact (i.e. felony murder), then these people are as guilty of the war crimes they refuse to prosecute/prevent as Bush and Co. are. Innocent people are being tortured right now because these QUISLINGS and BENEDICT ARNOLDS refuse to do what they were ELECTED to do, what they are LEGALLY BOUND to do. This is not hyperbolic ranting, this the HONEST TRUTH as every person with a shred of reason and humanity knows. Our Congress is now a bunch of traitors, thieves and war criminals every bit as shameful, as despicable, and as guilty as this mis-administration.

Nancy Pelosi needs to be held accountable, I will pay to see her hang.

It's good to see so many people coming around to this realization. I've been saying as much since March. When it became obvious the dems were going to be willing participants in the criminal activities of Bushco. Hopefully all those died in the wool blue dogs will start coming around and see the obvious truth.
