McCain's 'secret plan' to get bin Laden
By Steve Benen Monday Jan 28, 2008 8:20amI realize that Republicans and campaign reporters continue to perceive John McCain as a credible person when it comes to matters of national security and military affairs — but that doesn’t make it sensible.
John McCain says in almost every stump speech that he knows how to capture Osama bin Laden and that he’d follow the al Qaeda leader to the “Gates of Hell.”
So Washington Wire was wondering, what does McCain know that President Bush and the Pentagon don’t about how to sweep up America’s most elusive enemy.
“One thing I will not do is telegraph my punches. Osama bin Laden will be the last to know,” he said today while riding on the back of his bus between Florida events. In other words: he’s not telling. Why not share his strategy with the current occupant of the White House? “Because I have my own ideas and it would require implementation of certain policies and procedures that only as the president of the United States can be taken.”
I’m curious, does John McCain think we’re children?
If there are “certain policies and procedures” that could lead to OBL’s detention, and a president could implement those policies and procedures now, why wouldn’t McCain stop by the Oval Office for a chat with Bush about how best to proceed?
By McCain’s own reasoning, it sounds like he’d rather let bin Laden remain free for another year, until McCain and his “own ideas” can get to work.

Like the trick of sacrificing the interest of the country and/or individual Americans hasn't been used to win any previous ... cough, Reagan, cough, Iranian hostages, cough ... election.
McCain doesn't think that we're children; he merely thinks that we're the same idiots that we were in 1980. And he's probably right.
I have the plans for a machine that can reverse the power of Gravity. This could make transportation almost free and stop the need for Oil based fuels. We could build bases on Stations on Mars and the Moon. It would also make wars impossible.
I can't tell anyone about it though until I'm president, then I'll share it with
America.
McCain is going to build a trap. Then he'll use one of our freedoms as bait. Because UBL hates our freedoms he'll go into the trap to get the freedom bait so he can destroy it. When he goes in, McCain will shut the door on the trap and get him. This trap will be built beside the gates to hell.
I hope I haven't divulged any state secrets by telling you this.
McCain is a lot like Bush.... A grown man still playing cowboys and indians.
Explains their appeal to the redneckers.
It must be nice to be insane and run for president.
"Does John McCain think we're children?"
Well his message is tailored for an audience with low critical thinking skills.............aka Republicans.
Richard Nixon had a secret plan to end the war in 1968. The plan was to let the Democrats withdraw someday. We were still in Vietnam in 1972 when he got re-elected.
Impressive.

Thanks, great chuckle with my morning cuppa.

"this is the Nixon Doctrine in it's purest form"
R M Nixon on his bombing of Cambodia
Imitating Nixon and his secret plan to end the Vietnam war, makes him a better president than boosh?
will mcbain share his ideas even when he gets his ass handed to him?
I think Vietnam and all the empty oratory of the supporters of the time are McCain's 9-11.
BinLaden? Who dat? OH, McCain knows how to catch somebody that is a member of the CIA...I see...hey, McCain.....the American people aren't supposed to know that stuff. How can they be afraid if they know?
below_me @ 13:
I'm sure McCain handles his own ass.

i'll give you $2.00 for it!
W.knew @ 4:
I don't agree. Your assessment of Bush is correct, but I see McCain more as the crotchety old man who fearing he's been left behind by the time, struggles embarrassingly to remain relevant. Add to that an even more embarrassing petulant arrogance of feeling he is due, or owed the presidency and a still lingering festering rage over how he was treated in 2000 by Bush, who's ass he's had to kiss ever since, along with the suppressed rage and shame he must feel at having to have compromised so many of his own ideals in order to appeal to the wingnut base of the republican party and I think you've got McCain down pat.
I still think that John McCain should check into Walter Reed and have a brain scan, just in case.
Terrorists attack because of US foreign policy towards the middle east, John McCainiac wants to continue that foreign policy and in fact increase it, which will increase al qeada recruitment and make America less safe and more vulnerable to attack,.... so why exactly is McCainiac seen as being "strong on terror" ?, seems to me he's actually very weak on terror, as is Bush, because since the "war on terror" started al qeada has had huge gains in recruitment and is now stronger than pre 9/11, so people might want to reassess who is "tought on terror" because McCain aint it, in fact out of all the candidates him and Ghouliani would be bin ladens greatest ally.
McCain is just an old man whose time has come and gone. I don't think he knows what to do with the prospect of winning. If you have seen some of the youtube of his town meetings, this guys ready for Sun City not the White House.
On the bright side, we know bin laden wouldn't be tortured. So...there's that. ;)
Seriously, this sounds a lot like, "we'll smoke 'em out."
BTDT and really did get a t-shirt.
Tim in Japan @ 23:
John McCain's White House Chief of Staff will obviously be Henry Kissinger (who must already be advising him.)
That turned out well...
Well, at least we know...beyond the shadow of a doubt...that McCain plans to continue this unitary executive BS, and maybe even expand upon it. But he won't be any more successful than Bush at getting Bin Laden. He can't be. The whole motivating idea behind the empire is having an enemy. Bush (or McCain, or anyone who wants to continue the GWOT) needs Bin Laden.
And he's probably just taking a pot shot at his Commander in Chief anyhow.
Sorry, that was from

agree with everything except the "having to have compromised so many of his own ideals"...Johnny Walnuts never had any ideals......
Michael M. @ 5:
Sort of redundant, eh? I can't imagine why anyone really wants the job. The next victim, er, president, will be the scapegoat for eight years of horrendous mistakes, facing a world that promises only more insurmountable challenges, and beset by people who savage people for mean-spirited, selfish sport. What an ego that must require.
jackpine savage @ 26:
Yeah, that's what Cheech & Chong do, pot shots.
McCain is batshit crazy
Somebody needs to empty Insane McCain's drool cup Methinks it runnth over
W.knew @ 4:

Speaking of drool, Pamela Anderson's cups runneth over.
The guy is a liar, remember walking in downtown in iraq telling how safe it was, when he had 400 to 500 solders and snppers, overhead. He is just a double of bush a moron.
grumpyoldvet @ 28:
Ok, the ideals he thinks he used to have, and the media always credited him with having.
Is mccain gonna get benny laden after school lets out when the teacher's not watching?
"I’m curious, does John McCain think we’re children?"
Why SHOULDN'T he think that? Look what these fucktards have gotten away with in 6 years! And what has anyone done about it?
Six years goes by, we have two illegal wars, trillions in amassed debt, prison camps, torture, suspension of Constitutional rights, & the guy they say was behind 9/11 is still out there on the loose. All 6' 5" of him. On dialysis. In a cave.
Hell, I think we're children!
I've finally figured it out.
McCain is a 10-year-old in an adult's body. He never grew up. The press loves him because they also are a bunch of 10-year-olds in adult bodies. Russert's little gotchas, Tweety's icky feelings about Hillary.
Vote McCain.
Vote for the candidate eternally stuck in adolescence.
Brought to you by a press corps eternally stuck in adolescence.
McAint's latest teevee commercial here in the Sunshine State starts off by saying he knows how concerned we are with the threat of radical islamist terrorists. Yeah, I wake up each morning in a cold sweat because of AQ in Florida!
Gimme a break, puhleeze!
McCain's claim brings to mind Nixon's 1972 campaign and his "secret plan" for getting us out of Vietnam, which he was not going to reveal until after the election. The "secret plan" turned out to be "leave."
Less than a week after Rambo comes out to endorse McShane.
Hmm...
Wouldn't knowingly concealing the whereabouts of a criminal make one an accessory after the fact? Talk about helping the terrorists! In reality, though, McCain has no idea where Bin Laden is; McCain is just totally full of shit.
McCain's comments are nothing but hot air. If he knew how to capture Bin Laden or where he is it would have been done by now and he would have taken credit for it. On the other hand, if he does know how to capture Bin Laden and/or where he is and is not sharing it then some would call that aiding and abetting the enemy or even treason.
Fleece @ 42:
Oh yeah, Rambo. That's in the theaters now, isn't it? I'm surprised the reichwingers aren't pissing and moaning about how good God fearing Americans aren't flocking to see a true Amerkin hero.
This is in no way an endorsement of McInsane, but are not all politicians the last seven or eight years as out of touch with reality as he is? Listen to them talk. They pretend like so have no friggin' idea what blogs and Americans in general are talking about. If the discussion on everyone's lips is the economy, they make stump speeches on tourism. If the discussion turns to everyone wanting the military out of Iraq, they make speeches about global warming. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but they seem to all be blatantly obvious is giving everyone the "Dick Cheney salute" on every question they get asked.
Jeepers, if McCant knows how to get Osama, and refuses to share that info, isn't he guilty of aiding and abetting a criminal? He must have some info no one else knows. There must be some clause in the homeland security lawscape that McCant is in violation of. After all, it sounds like he is shielding Osama from capture.
I bet we could splash a little water in his face and make him talk...
Dr. Acula @ 40:
What is it with Florida? Too much sun baking the brain. This guy is ahead in the polls. Why not make Dole vice president? The stock in Depends would skyrocket.
McInsane knows where Bin Laden is buried.
fwacbar @ 48:
Yeah, I was gonna mention that we'd water board anyone else who knew how to catch him.
I think I know what his plan is.
First, he's gonna place a call to the Acme Mail Order Company and order a big anvil..........
Dave of the Jungle @ 7:
That was my first thought when I read the post. Anybody who believes a candidate when he says he has a secret anything is a fool, even if it's a Secret Santa.
Secret plan? To what, take his body out of the freezer? He's been dead since 2001:
www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,41576,00.html
Anyone who doesn't understand that McCain is either in the first stage of Alzheimer's or the last stage of tertiary syphilis should have their own head examined.
Isn't McCain (aka: "Bob Dole II") the same guy who said we're gonna be in Iraq for "a hundred years" or something like that?
I'm sure there are several reasons he's keeping his plan a secret, but "telegraphing his punches" is the least of them.
It is not surprising that John McCain doesn't share his plans to capture Osama with Bush. That's 'cause he knows Bush doesn't want to capture Osama and would ignore McCain's plans.. George could have caught bin Laden right in the beginning. But the bin Ladens are good friends of the Bush family and Osama would probably reveal too much of Bush's dirty laundry if caught. Then they would have to find a new poster boy for their "War on Terror"
So what normally happens to people that help terrorists elude capture?
Weaseldog @ 58:
If you're a Republican you get the Medal of Freedom, I guess.
What can Bush do that Petreaus can't?
Authorize a carpet bombing with nuclear weapons?
fwacbar @ 47:
Yep, thats what I said as well in my previous comment. In fact, I would go further. If McCain knows how to get Bin Laden and fails to share this information then that would make McCain a terrorist and a member of Al Qaeda. Lets see what he really knows. Waterboarding anyone?
McCain's going to put Bin Laden on Double-Secret Probation!
So what normally happens to people that help terrorists elude capture?
They get to joke about non-found WMDs and be in the Presidency for 8 years. Posada Carriles, ring a bell?
This almost soumds treasonous to me. If we are attacked again in the next year - and he knew how to get OBL during that time - then isn't he responsible for that attack by not informing the proper authorities?
"Does John McCain think we're children?"
Duh...
RECAP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSk9toKfrwo
Radically Moderate @ 11:
If the country as a whole is dumb enough to fall for this again . . . and after 8 years of Rube and Doom how could one conclude otherwise, then we deserve Gramps McCain and the Surginistas.
Osama Bin Laden?? Oh yeah....that's that guy who was the 'master mind' behind 9/11. That is that guy who Bush said was wanted 'dead or alive' seven years ago, but hasn't been caught yet. He's the guy who puts out a video every few months to remind us we need to be scared. Oh yeah....I remember him. That's the guy we're all supposed to be afraid of because he might 'drive some more jetliners into a high-rise near you' and McCains just the guy who can catch him. If McCain is going to play the fear card, he had better be a lot more original than that. Bin Laden is Bushes bogey man. You would think he could come up with a better gig than that tired old chestnut.
he has a secret plan?............ooooooo......how mysterious.I'm gonna vote for him now, cause he has an imagination.ooooooooo.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
McCain has a "secret plan" to get Osama bin Laden, and Nixon had a "secret plan" to win in Vietnam.
Same bullpucky, different day.
Osama bin Laden is dead. End of story. McCain is beginning to look like he's dead in the water in this campaign if he's spewing crap like this. Anyone who is thinking about being the next President should be at least smart enough to know that Americans do not want to hear about the government having more freakin' secrets.
moontime @ 54:
Benazir Bhutto also said OBL was murdered by one of his cronies, and the CIA closed the unit dedicated to finding him because his no longer dangerous.
OZ @ 73:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnychOXj9Tg
Didn't the late Benazir Bhutto, in an interview with David Frost in November/07, list as one of the people who may have been out to assassinate her Omar Saeed Sheikh, and referred to him as "the man who murdered Osama bin Laden"? That sure didn't seem like a slip of the tongue. So now we ask the next question - if bin Laden is dead, why hasn't BushCo told anyone about it? Could it be because W, Darth Cheney, or any of the other neocons would hate to lose the use of a perfectly good bogey-man simply because he IS DEAD!!!!!!!
And the mainstream media in the US and Canada (where I live), the one with the obscene liberal bias, hasn't touched this story. WTF!?!?!? The corporate owned media has to be reined in and called to account for their simply rolling over for the Republican party. If so many lives weren't in the balance, it would be funny.
Namaste
I'm more afraid of a McCain presidency than I am of any terrorist.
Be it dementia, Alzheimer's, or good old fashioned senility, John McCain needs to be "retied" to a comfy rubber room somewhere far from any connection with political power...He is as "far gone" now as was "Ronnie-I-don't-remember"!
Say what you want about this guy, but if obama steals the nomination MCCain will be the president. The Democrats will more than split the party in two, and go for McCain. I will bet money.
Romney will be the GOP nominee for president because he supports the kind of disaster capitalism that takes advantage of other countries weak economies and dismantles them by promising money with huge interest rates in order for the IMF and World Bank to swoop in and divert their assets back to Wall Street and the weapons industry. It is a cash cow for the neocons that keeps on giving.
"Every time I've seen things get scary," Romney said. "I put aside that feeling and say, `Aha. Is this a buying opportunity?" Mitt Romney
Idiot. He's "telegraphing his punches" to Bin Laden every time he opens his mouth about this.
Bin Laden's got so many places to hide, it's ridiculous. Central Asia is vast. He could easily be in China or one of the states bordering on Russia. Once he got out of Tora Bora, he was home free.
I'm sure it's posted here already but I don't have the time to read all comments - forgive me for needing to pay my mortgage.
The ONLY reason Bush has not captured or killed Bon Laden is that he needs a boogey man. Without the boogey man to fear, he's got nothing.
Am I the only one remembering a certain fictitious politico's "Secret Plan to Fight Inflation?" XD
Do the Repugs not get that that A- that show was fictional, and B- that was supposed to be a DUMB thing to say?
oldgringo @ 77:
Haven't you noticed? Faulty memory is a PREREQUISITE to a position of power in any Republican administration, be it President, Vice President, or Attorney General.
scooter @ 81:
And now McInsane is trying on the "OBL completes me" for size.
A secret plan, eh? Sure. And Hitler had Wunderwaffen that were going to win the war for him as the Russians blasted the shit out of his bunker. I think Mc Cain has been watching too many war movies.
If anybody believes the USA is hunting bin Laden (or doesn't know where he is), they probably believe that Saddam brought down the towers, too.
So tiresome. OBL has been very, very good for GWB.

If spending 5yrs in prison and knowing next to nothing about economics makes one qualified to be president, then the U.S. has millions of qualified applicants.

I think it's a qualification.
great when Johnie comes out of the bat-shit crazy cave. Perhaps he can steal some of Mitt's majic PJ's
