Tomorrow is Fifth Anniversary of the “Day of Shame”

Vastleft at Corrente:

On February 5, 2003, Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed the United Nations to rally support for an invasion of Iraq.

His presentation contained little substance and numerous obvious flaws, and the international community was unimpressed.

America’s mainstream media, however, declared it “compelling.”

For a nation living in the ghostly shadow of the twin towers, the media’s Good Warmaking seal of approval was enough to keep that treasonous question — “why?” — relatively unheard.

The costs — in lives, money, reputation, and more — of this war of whim are nearly incalculable.

This year’s fifth anniversary coincides with a Super Tuesday primary like no other. As Americans across the country go to the polls, a couple of hundred thousand American troops, contractors, and mercenaries are still stewing in America’s longest and most ill-conceived war.

Get out and vote tomorrow.

It is up to us to get our troops home, save our economy and our country.

Just vote Dem.

This is where Hillary loses me… She states that she was duped by this Administration. Trained as a lawyer, she should be well aware of the rules of evidence - and none of that dog and pony charade by Powell passed the smell test. If she is that easily “duped” by scary cartoons, I worry about the future of the U.S. with her in the White House. (:>

Flaws? Flaws? Downright lies and Powell and the entire Bush Regime knew it was all lies. The Dems KNEW IT TOO. It was the final nail in the coffin of the former democratic republic known as the United States of America.

Happy anniversary Secretary Powell! We’ll keep counting (just in case you decide you want to run for any office).

Donaldd Says:

Powell’s speech was a 1991 Plagiarized Students paper garnered from the Internet. Powell knew it was a LIE but read it anyway. Major Colon Powell did his job in the coverup for the Pentagon during the Mi Lie Investigation in Vietnam as well as fostering Lies to support Bush’s Illegal Terrorist invasion of Iraq.

#3: Do not disagree all that much, however, after the Powell “dog and pony”
show before the UN General Assembly(w/an artist conception drawing of the
mobile labs containing tubing), it is pretty evident that 98 percent of the
American public also thought/believed that Saddam had WMD. Deceit/lies
and misinformation by Powell is, in my opinion, the day that public got behind
the invasion….and we can blame it on two primary sources (1) Powell for
putting out uncorraborated statement and (2) the MSM for not doing it’s
job and instead “led the pack” with such falsehoods…being the usual and
customary lazy bunch of turds who were like lemmings going over a cliff.

H1022 Says:

She wasn’t duped. She took the Bill path and supported the war. Hill didn’t want to end up like Sam Nunn and be shut out of the nomination because she opposed the war. It was calculated like everything else. In the words of Cohen in the Post “only a Frenchman”.

“a couple of hundred thousand American troops, contractors, and mercenaries are still stewing in America’s longest and most ill-conceived war.”

First of all, NOT ill-conceived. Illegal, immoral, unjust, criminal, genocide — but all with the obvious intention of chasing the Caspian oil down the rabbit hole. Installing airbases is not an ‘ill-conceived’ purpose.

Secondly, “American troops, contractors, and mercenaries” is a misnomer. NO American can be a mercenary in an American invasion. They are privatized US soldiers, not mercenaries.

There ARE mercenaries in Iraq — non-American racists from Korovet and other rightwing deathsquads are all over the place.

20
Doggiebobo Says:

And be reminded that after Powell’s “dog and pony show”, it was George Tenent
who, within 10 days, came forward and told the media that he had told Powell
that much of the information presented was not confirmed by the CIA and in fact
was uncorroboated and that the CIA had no information supporting the “mobile
labs”. (Of course bush-lite gave George Tenent the Medal of Freedom for doing such a “good job” as head of the CIA) And even later, Powell was quoted as
saying that “the worst day of his life” was when he appeared and gave his
statements before the UN Assembly…that statment was, of course, in retrospect.
I still say that the MSM is as guility as any individual because, as usual, they
failed in their responsibility to the American public.

OT, but, there is “Live Shame” going on right now on CNN. Media thug lou dobbs is taking an ass kicking by a representative of La Raza, and like his co-joined twin bill-o, he is talking over and shouting down the person he brought on the air to “discuss” racism. He won’t let the woman get a word in edge-wise and she won’t kow-tow to him. Lou is trying to make the argument about him, and she is calling him and the network out. And, now, lou-billo has just threatened to cut her mic off.

JTM Says:

oZer @ 14:

i remember listening to Powell live while driving in my car. it was compelling.

I agree, even if I wasn’t driving at the time. The main reason it was convincing to me is that I knew Powell’s history. Listening to him, I said to myself, “if he’s saying this, it must be true, because Powell wouldn’t lie.”

I watched him carefully for a long time after I learned that it was all BS. I thought I could see him sag. I thought I could see the guilt. I thought I could see a man who has sold his soul for a boy king and knew it.

But I might have been looking for this too hard. I might have been being defensive, thinking he must be feeling guilty since I trusted him before. But, for all I know, I was a fool the whole time.

“Day of Shame” is an excellent name. Because I share it.

nirak @ 12:

Me too. That was the most lame speech ever given at the UN. I remember being embarrassed even as he gave it.

26
Paul in LA Says:

JTM @ 23:

Listening to him, I said to myself, “if he’s saying this, it must be true, because Powell wouldn’t lie.”

Then your education failed you. Powell’s first big lie was when he covered up for the My Lai massacres.

Colin Powell, then a 31-year-old Army Major, was charged with investigating… In his report Powell wrote: “In direct refutation of this portrayal is the fact that relations between Americal soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai

We now know that at least TWENTY-FIVE village massacres took place by US troops during that same time period. Powell has been a toady to Pentagon power and warcrimes from start to finish.

In reference to the mention of tomorrow’s primaries…what’s with all of the vitriol coming form the Clinton camp? I check out DU every so often and I see a lot of the most popular threads are from Hillary supporters really up in arms against Obama. But it sounds like they’re pissed as if the Obama campaign has been down right nasty and underhanded. Is this really what’s going on? Because this isn’t what I have seen. I’ve been an innoent bystander in all of this without injecting my opinion (because I forget my username and password over there!) but the rhetoric really seems ridiculous from those in the Clinton camp. Am I the only one noticing this, or is it on both sides?

And what better way for the US military to mark the occasion than this:

U.S. Says 9 Iraqi Civilians Accidentally Killed

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - American troops accidentally killed nine Iraqi civilians while hunting down al Qaeda militants, the U.S. military admitted on Monday, the latest in a series of mistakes in which innocent Iraqis have died.

The deaths south of Baghdad on Saturday, which Iraqi police said were caused by a helicopter air strike, were announced as Iraq said it would soon begin talks with U.S. officials on an agreement covering the role of U.S. forces after a U.N. Security Council mandate expires at the end of 2008…

“…We offer our condolences to the families of those who were killed in the incident and we mourn the loss of innocent civilian life,” it said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters.

“Boy is my face red!” added Uncle Sam, as he passed out crisp, new, one-dollar bills to 3 people who could prove that they were related to the freshly deceased.

****************************************************************************************
That’s real hind sight stuff to say, especially when the majority of Senate was also duped, there is lot more about the issue than Just Hillary. Actually I admired Powell and trusted his judgment as many Americans did. But, that admiration was re-enforced when, on national television, Powell admitted his deception, which ruined his political career. That was sad.

What I’m worried about is the Democrats blowing the whole election with Obama as the nominee. Why I say that, for some of the same reasons perhaps, and imagine what happened at that Powell level. The lies they used are similar to what will be done with Obama. The Democrats know the Republicans will rip Obama’s record apart. Look at junk the Republicans are working through now between each other. Its mild compared to what they plan for Obama. And just as you say, Cormac, if they do job right to rip the shreds out of Obama, likely will also to make it a hard time for Obama to even get re-elected in Illinois.

The effort likely is already in motion and the dirt on Obama is already for Mainstream Media, hate radio, and the bloggers that will be relentless and create so much doubt Obama will dive in popularity, and McCain will soar to popularity. Remember in Illinois the Republicans have been burn were former Governor Ryan went to jail. They are very up set and getting ready for pay back. Likely collecting and planning a new front to crack the Democratic stronghold on cook county Illinois, or the Senate slot of Obama. I say this because of some of the hind sight I can use now.

The Republicans waged a challenge with Obama in the Senate race competing with Allen Keyes. Please America that was like throwing away the election. Allen Keyes frighten everyone to vote Obama thats was why it was a land slide. Allen Keyes is the perfect black man to throw an election. So, here we are. Obama has great inspiration and dreams but doesn’t know how to do anything plus admits that in his book called “Audacity of Hope”. You should read it Obama talks about white southern men and imagines they talk to their son’s about Nigers this and Nigers that. And he writes that in his book, when that gets out the shit will hit the fan.
