HBO Will Air "Taxi To The Dark Side" After Discovery Channel Gets Cold Feet
By Nicole Belle Friday Feb 22, 2008 5:02pm
Taxi to the Dark Side, a documentary about an innocent Afghan taxi driver tortured to death by U.S. officials at Bagram Air Base, has received wide critical acclaim since its debut in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. The New York Times’s A.O. Scott said, “If recent American history is ever going to be discussed with the necessary clarity and ethical rigor, this film will be essential.”
Earlier this month, ThinkProgress reported that the Discovery Channel broke its contract to broadcast Taxi prior to the 2008 elections. With plans to take the company public, executives were afraid the “film’s controversial content might damage Discovery’s public offering.”
In a press release on Thursday, HBO announced that it has bought the rights to Taxi and will show the film in September 2008.
Filmmaker Alex Gibney is up for an Oscar for Best Documentary for "Taxi To The Dark Side" this Sunday.

Good for HBO. I plan on seeing this soon.
START SHOWING IT NOW HBO
That's good news. Every American should see that movie, so they'll understand what this administration has done in our name.
it's available via bit torrent...
Let's not kid ourselves. This is about left and right and the inhumane nature of the right wing and the apologetics that come from the right wing supporters to try and blow this shit over.. or their attempts to blame the left for this garbage.
The United States of America was a good idea.
Was.
Over the past 70 or so years, however, our leaders have corrupted the idea.
And ordinary citizens have gone along quietly for the ride.
What's needed now is a new revolutionary leader. Obama's half-way there. I hope to live to see Obama's successor.
I GUESS DISCOVERY'S MILITARY CHANNEL LIKES TO SHOWCASE A CONSTANT DIET OF HARDWARE THAT PROMOTES SANITIZED DEATH AND DESTRUCTION......JUST NOT THE REALITY OF THAT HARDWARE
DISGUSTED? YEAH ME TOO..... that's why i sent them an email they won't forget....

I've got $100 that says HBO doesn't show it in September. Some reason will surface for not showing it. The neocons will never allow this to be shown to the masses on TV.
or you could just download it off bittorrent
bob dobbs @ 8:
I'll add $100 to your bet, for the same reason.
VietVet8666 @ 6 says:
I hope to live to see Obama’s successor.
I hope I live long enough to vote for Obama, or not. I just might go ballistic on some dumb-fuck republican, especially one who mentions that Bill Clinton got a blow job. Is there such a thing as Political Dementia, going crazy from listening to idiot republicans?
Hey, can I start my defense fund now? Would it be tax deductible, if I'm not a republican?
Jeff, have you a link?
VietVet8666 @ 6:
Not too likely. the elites control the system and front the major candidates. The media participates in the big payoff called an election.
The neocons of both Democrat and Republican mask are big fans of Strauss and by association, Machiavelli. Machiavelli gave the basics on how this country's government was coopted. He said:
Is is so hard to believe that this government is controlled by the elite? and that they wont let something as quaint as an "election" really change anything of substance?

The Military Channel is not only hour after hour of the kind of war-wanking the Hitler Channel gave up on a year or so ago, it has mercenaries from Blackwater as guest hosts on the show about small arms.
You think thats bad?
On PBS this weekend there was an enlightening interview with Susan Jacoby, author of a new book, The Age of American Unreason (Pantheon, 2008), where she makes the point that ignorance underlies the war as much as trickery and deception. In a poll, college and high school-educated respondents were asked to find Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Israel on a world map. Only 23% of the college-educated under the age of 25 and 6% of high school-educated could find all four, despite the fact that the map they were given was labeled -- we are not talking about maps where the countries are left blank.

The dumbing-down of America has been a goal of both parties for 40 years or so.
God forbid American viewers should be shown the truth. For as the Bu$hCo Administration has taught us, Truth is Lies, Weakness is Strength, and that dark-skinned dude with a black hood over his head and electrodes attached to his testicles is simply enjoying an "edgy" recreational activity, one probably dreamed up by Godless Libruls . . .
L.A. Confidential @ 16:
The map was labeled? So, in other words, 75% of college grads, and 94% of high school grads can't read.

Not to be too partisan about it, but I don't think it's been a goal of both parties. The Dems have been TRYING to win elections for the last 30 years by talking about policies and issues, while the Repubs have been SUCCEEDING in winning elections by talking in slogans and pushing hot-button emotional issues, while steering as far away policy debates as possible. Since the former strategy works best when the population is intelligent and rational, and the latter strategy works best when the electorate is ignorant, superstitious and emotional, I think the Republican strategists have a bigger interest in the population being stupid.

These are the same people that brought the Eugenics movement to the US, that tried an overt fascist coup (Smedley Butler prevented that one,) funded the Nazi war-machine, imported the same nazi scientists and intelligence assets to the US, the false-flagged the Gulf of Tonkin, told us Agent orange was ok, told soldiers and airman that nuclear mushroom clouds were safe to march under...
and so on...
and an election matters to these people?

Have dislike for both parties.
They feed at the same trough.
They have different angles and messages, but the goal always is to achieve power and stay in power.

Intentional dumbing down-as theology has replaced and continues to replace rational/skeptical thought on school boards.

You are, of course, correct.
I don't think that HBO is afraid to air anything, after "The Tossed-Salad Man" bit from their documentary on prisons:
First, here's the comic account by Chris Rock:

Here's the REAL THING (not the act, just an account of such by an inmate):

Chris Deliso, the only western journalist in Macedonia, longtime contributor to Antiwar.com, proprietor of Balkanalysis.com and author of The Coming Balkan Caliphate: The Threat of Radical Islam to Europe and the West, discusses the problems of ethnic and religious differences, crime and corruption in the former Yugoslavia, the rise of Saudi-financed Wahaabi Islam in Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia and the compromised and ineffectual “humanitarians” from the UN who’ve been running Kosovo.

His two new books, The Coming Balkan Caliphate: The Threat of Radical Islam to Europe and the West and Hidden Macedonia: The Mystic Lakes of Ohrid and Prespa will appeal to readers interested in, respectively, the major security issues involving the region today, and travel in one of Europe’s most fascinating but least visited areas.

He is also a travel writer for Lonely Planet, covering SE Europe.
Heh, are there actually still people that dont know about this stuff?
Back in the day I was in the military and my girl friend at the time (a 5'10" blonde amazon hottie type) was an interrogator at Guantanamo.
You woulnt believe the stuff she saw...and did!
DAmn. I don't get HBO. Wher're the pirate DVD's?

Thank goodness I have a very perceptive cat. He jumped on the desk and walked in front on the moniter to get my attention and calm me down.
Thanks for the concern.

Geez, the right wingnuts have terrified corporate media. We would do well to put the same fear into them whenever they broadcast some crap about Democrats.
HBO will chickenshit out before they show it and it will wind up in the shitcan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bob dobbs @ 8:
There was a Cable TV doc about the Hadritha incident the other day,
missed most of it so dont know what angle they used on it.
but they did mention 24 deaths on the small part I caught.

Can you imagine the weird stuff that will be going on in Minneapolis this year,
and the possible fallout if it leaks and surfaces to the MSM.
Tap dancing, diapers, rent boys, call girls, and thats just the mentionable stuff ;)
Great news! I wish it were on basic cable instead, but this is still good.
IN A RELATED STORY..... DISCOVERY CHANNEL DISCOVERS THAT THEY HAVE NO BALLS...
I just wrote to HBO and let them know that I was planning to cancel my subscription, but changed my mind because of their decision to air "Taxi to the Dark Side".
Hell, they'll surely get lots of hate mail. I might as well try to counteract that in my own small way.
If they puss out, it will be because they believe it to be against their best financial interests. If we properly communicate with them, they are less likely to get that impression.
Money talks. Let's make it talk for us, once in a while.
New name: the DisCowardly Channel!
I'm confused... Discovery Holding Company is already public (Nasdaq: DISCA, DISCB). It's true they only hold a 66.67% stake in Discovery Communications, the rest being held by Advance/Newhouse Programming Partnership, and that they plan to form a new combined holding company, but that has been planned for a long time, and is not the same thing as "going public" at all. There will be no public offering. It's a straight, tax-free stock swap with Advance/Newhouse gaining a 33.33% share in the new holding company and existing DHC shareholders receiving the other 66.67% of the shares.
Zenrage @ 5:
Hell, man, the right doesn`t blame the left for this kind of shit. They blame the left for trying to stop it.These sadistic motherfuckers who call fair, compassionate people traitors could care less if anyone is tortured and killed as long as the stock price is profitable for them. This has been going on since November 22,1963.,and it has peaked with George W.Bush, the "Albatross president;"the guy who made torture legal ,started a war for the oil, fucked up the war for oil, destroyed the Iraqi culture, yet made America into a villainous country. This guy`s curse will be around our grand children`s necks unless we restore America to it`s once honorable position.I do not see that happening any time soon.
IMPEACH! INDICT! IMPRISON! LOL at the prospect of that happening.

Well, this is an interesting discussion on Discovery. Last time I followed a discussion online about Discovery Channel it was about them dropping their race team (that Lance won a TDF title for) and now they dropped this superb documentary.
To be honest, I think HBO looks at airing it strictly as a business decision, and money will trump fealty to neoconservative cabal of torturers.
I wish this had of come out in 2005 instead. Either way this will be the neocons funeral march
Well, I WAS going to watch the third installment of "Pride and Prejudice" on Masterpiece Theater tomorrow night instead of "60 Minutes" or the Academy Awards, but now I guess I'll tune into the Academy Awards to cheer on "Taxi to the Dark Side".
See you another time "Mr. Darcy".
Yeah, it's controversial that the US tortures and tortures to death innocent prisoners. But what's really controversial is that no one gives a s***. There should be rioting in the streets. We've lost our soul. The great American experiment, not worth a f***.
Abbybwood @ 48:
Do NOT miss 60 minutes tomorrow. They're doing the Seigelman story. Should be big.
yeah, it would have hurt discovery's public offering. nothing like publicity and high ratings to damage fiscal viability!
bunch of chickens.
It's time to give Alex Gibney a Nobel prize. Seriously.
Good
perhaps, maybeeeeee...discovery channel withdrew at the behest of ted koppel? i don't know, i'm just guessing. he is an executive and correspondent there-can't imagine him working there without some input about programming.maybeeeee...perhaps the sensitive nature of the topic would inflame emotions enough...because...maybeee...perhaps he has an interest in a wider conflict that would involve some of these tactics the program exposes.i don't know.
Filmmaker Alex Gibney is up for an Oscar for Best Documentary for “Taxi To The Dark Side” this Sunday.
he won, discovery lost, and the majority of americans don't have hbo, and will never see this, will never know who dilawar was, or know that [almost] no one has been held accountable
it's been almost 5 years since his death, 1 person sentenced to two months for his involvement
it's been almost 7 months since a grand jury was convened
