Counterterrorism “tsar” Richard Clarke’s plan to deal with al-Qaeda is given to National Security Adviser Rice on this day. It includes a warning that al-Qaeda cells already exist in the US. June 2007, JFK Plot: Four men accused of plotting to blow up fuel arteries underneath JFK Airport in New York.

In our fourth story tonight, the fear got plenty of that, even as it turned out that attacking JFK would not have ignited the fuel pipeline system, nor vice-versa, if only due to the lack of air.

In addition to the laws of physics, the pipeline that stretches 40 miles from New Jersey to JFK has the occasional disconnect valve or two. The alleged terrorists apparently hoped to take out JFK, the pipeline, and thousands of people who live above the pipeline. It is not their job to know better.

But when a U.S. attorney said that the results of a successful attack would have been unthinkable, in fact, she and other U.S. officials should have known that thinkable was about all those results were. They were not that doable. Federal officials confirm the alleged terrorists had no experience, no backing, no money, no explosives, and no inside information, unless you count Google Earth.

Plus, of course, whatever the accused ringleader, seen here in surveillance tape just prior to his capture, remembers from his job as a cargo handler 12 years ago.

And though the plan is branded sophisticated, its perpetrators are not sophisticated enough to have not handed over the videotape of themselves training with weapons to a Circuit City store in order to be transferred to DVD.

Ok, I've come out from under my bed (where I cower in fear) to comment. (NOT!!) The drivers on the roads of Seoul are far more dangerous than any terror threat. I live it every day. (wink) Terror-schmerror.

The only way to gain any perspective on this would be seeing a list of terrorist plots or activities thwarted by the Bill Clinton administration in the 1990s, especially after the first World Trade Center attack in 1993.

Back at the turn of the century, I remember reading about a U.S. border agent (on high alert) becoming suspicious of a guy trying to enter the U.S. up in Washington state. This guy's car was searched and explosives were found in the trunk. He had planned on bombing the Los Angeles airport.

How many other Cliinton Era terrorist plots were stopped by the administration that took the terrorist threat seriously and kept U.S. citizens, at least inside the U.S., relatively safe, without resorting to a whole bunch of extra-Constitutional measures?

We'll probably never know, because of Bush's executive order locking down information concerning previous administrations.

But I bet that if we ever learned how many times the Clinton administration stopped domestic terrorists, whether foreign or homegrown, the Bush list would pale in comparison.

None of the MSM does a good job but faux is always short on facts.

Let's see - I don't have to even do any research to debunk most of these idiotic stories.

Richard Reid: US Government ignored warning from Israeli Mossad. Airline passengers saw him, overpowered him and with the aid of airline workers held him until the plane landed. No involvement by the US Government. Except ignoring the warning.

Jose Padilla: I have never heard any actual evidence that Jose Padilla did anything at all. He was originally accused of wanting to blow up a dirty bomb and a dozen other charges. All of them were dropped. After five years in captivity and undergoing torture for most of it, he was charged with providing support to a terrorist organization - something that was not even against the law when he was arrested because the stupid law had not yet been passed. It was never specified what terrorist organization - or even what country although there were some allegations that it was Eastern Europe (Kosovo, Serbia, ???) sometime in the mid 1990's. Trial was a kangaroo court where he was not allowed to introduce testimony on his own behalf including testimony from a psychiatrist who would have testified that he had definitely been tortured, and that he had suffered a mental breakdown as a result. He was allowed to call no witnesses, was not allowed to cross-examine the government's witnesses on grounds of "national security" and convicted of a "conspiracy" with two other men in the same trial. All indications are that he did not even know the other two men at all. Get this! New AG Mukasey, then the US Attorney for the New York district insisted that he had to have access to a lawyer and had the right to speak to his family (he is a US Citizen!). Bushco immediately transferred him to Florida to a military brig where he was held incommunicado for almost three years. NOTE: warrantless wiretapping not a factor here. Torture - yes.

Lackawanna Six: These people are US Citizens as well, and their group was infiltrated by an FBI sting operation. Offers of money, assistance and various other inducements were offered for participation in a plot advanced by the informant. While the group generally agreed with some of the "political" statements of the informant, they did not participate enthusiastically with the so-called "planning" that was all instigated by the informant. In this case, warrantless wiretapping probably was used, along with entrapment, bribery, fraud, coercion, etc.

Iyman Faris - a schizophrenic man who supposedly planned to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge by cutting the cables with a blowtorch. He was originally fingered by Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (under openly admitted waterboarding and other torture). Although Mr. Faris pleaded guilty, he has subsequently recanted his "confession" and is working to re-open his case, claiming he did not "case the bridge" and although he did meet Mohammad - he says he was trying to write a book about al Quaeda and researching information. Mohammad was captured in 2003 and Mr. Faris was arrested some months later. NOTE: Individual is mentally ill, should be in a mental hospital, not serving 20 years for doing basically nothing.

Jihad Network A bunch of guys playing paintball in the woods was supposedly urged to go to Pakistan and train as jihadists to work with an insurgency group against Indian occupation of Kashmir. Throughout a bunch of really confusiion testimony, 6 pled guilty to weapons charges (paintball guns on public lands), 3 of those cooperated with the FBI in testimony against the supposed ringleader (their testimony actually was better for the defense) two were acquitted of the remaining batch, and the rest were convicted of "consipiracy". The ringleader was convicted of fomenting the jihadist stuff although apparently - according to even the prosecutions witnesses what he really did was tell all the men that because of the prejudiced climate against all Muslims here after 9/11 they should probably go back to their country of origin, and if they didn't do that they should not travel anywhere at all.

Dhiren Barot: This guy was living a fantasy life apparently watching too many hollywood movies and reading Tom Clancy books - and not learning very much about how to be a "terrorist". He was portrayed as a "technical mastermind" capable of at least half a dozen plots to blow up massive amounts of infrastructure and buildings, but upon closer examination, his videos are found to have spliced scenes from Bruce Willis movies and unrealistic scenarios that experts in explosives say only come from hollywood action movies. Barot was fingered by a Pakistani who did not testify at his trial - and there is a great deal of suspicion that the Pakistani only did this under torture in that country. The films were made in 2001 - and Mr. Barot was not arrested until late 2003 - after Tom Ridge did one of his famous "Code Orange" alerts. NOTE: This is a British subject, tried in Britain. NO involvement of the US Government except for the orange alert.

Elshafay and Siraj: El Shafay is a 19-year-old schizophrenic and Siraj a 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Pakistan who came here when he was bout 15 or 16. Siraj was disaffected with his life here and began plotting a series of bomb attacks which apparently El Shafay was to carry out by placing backpack bombs into trash receptacles located at strategic points around the city. A tip was received on a hotline from someone who overheard these plans and an informant infiltrated the "group" - probably exacerbating an already idiotic and pretty doubtful situation. Neither of the two had any bomb-making experience, Siraj had no contacts to purchase either materials or completed bombs, and neither of them had any money. El Shafay received a lighter sentence by pleading guilty and testifying against Siraj who is now serving life in prison. NOTE: One of these individuals is mentally ill.

Aref and Hossain: Aref is a Kurdish refugee from Iraq who came to the US from Syria in 1999. He is the Imam at a local mosque and is viewed as a moderate by his community (including non-Muslims). Hossain is a 30-year naturalized US Citizen from Bangladesh who owns a pizza shop. Both men have families and both were in financial difficulties when they were approached by a third man (FBI Sting operation coming up) This third man has a history of fraud, extortion, bribery, check kiting and other crimes. The FBI had him approach the men with a money laundering scheme under the guise of a loan. Later he told them that the money was part of an arms deal and offered to show them a missle. He did show the SAM missle to Hossain but not to Aref. At the same time, the third man was lying to the FBI about what he was saying to the men - he told his handlers he needed to speak Urdu to Hossain (even though that was not Hossain's first language) and it took the FBI months to get someone to actually tran
