Late Night Music Club with Martha and the Vandellas

On Saturday C&L covered lunatic fringe Iowa Congressman Steve King’s racist outburst aimed at Barack Obama. Matthew Grimm, leader of Iowa-based rockers, Red Smear, analyzed King’s psychotic behavior. It’s Monday, the perfect day to dedicate a Martha & the Vandellas classic 1964 anthem, written by Marvin Gaye and William Stevenson specifically as a good timey unifying song to the very divisive Rep. King:

I met Councilwoman Reeves in Lansing at our capitol. She was protesting against insurance redlining in the city of Detroit when I was working for the ever inept Speaker Dillon.

She was wearing ivory, and had apparently spilled red kool-aid/pop on her pants. Nice lady. Other than Todd Rundgren, the only music star I’ve met.

“oh yea , I was 17 when that song came out , …”

You’re ahead of me by a few years, bud, but the Philly, and the Motown, sounds carried me through the teens, University, and beyond. Someone will inform me, no doubt, why the “Reeves” is dropped from the name. All you music hounds are undoubtedly correct in removing the sur nom; nevertheless, try as I might, I can’t recall anything other than “Martha Reeves and the Vandellas,” as if we needed to distinguish this Martha from all the others performing with the Vandellas.

Martha Reeves is a on the City Council here in Detroit. She acts like a diva still. She needs to go back to singing and get out of City Hall. Remember when the Superbowl was here in Detroit a few years back? She screamed about how they didn’t give her free tickets to the game. After all, she’s a *STAR* and should get free stuff. Bah-Humbug to her. Great song, though, true enuf….

MARTHA!!!!

And all that hippy, hippy shake in the background.

Where’d all that good music go? That Stax, that Motown?

Sigh.

I loved the Wall Of Sound, but look where Phil Spector went.

Sigh.

It WAS good though, all of it, back then.

We grew up with them all . . they have a place in our hearts, and in our ears.

Nothing replaces it, but I guess, new stuff comes along to ponder.

I still miss the mist in my eyes from “Come And Get These Memories” and the blazing drive and soul of the ORIGINAL “Heat Wave”.

(in his best top 40 Kasey Cassem voice)
“And thanks to Howie Klein for that blast in the past.”

As a 55 yo Route 66 kid that grew up playing music in Missouri this is so cool of a video. The local Springfield band (one of the best and funkiest groups to ever come out Mo.) Granny’s Bathwater got the job as her band. One of the last members, Don Ships, died a few years ago in a fire along with a former Ozark Mountain Dare Devil member. The video brought back a lot of fond memories of those guys. They were great musicians. Fatback Blues feel. Funky.

This is dedicated to the Houston Rockets, Steely Dan: Hey 19 -

Don’t know if you take requests… Or if you could even accomodate all of them, but I’d kill (someone I already dislike, rest assured) to hear the John Legend/Colbert duet from a couple nights ago…

Getting down……………Shall we bring back the Wolfman jack ?

Martha and the Vandellas provide proof that, dancing and singing in the streets beats “detonating in the streets”.

Obviously Rep King has the sense of a three toed Inhofe sloth that just refuses to evolve.

David N-

There’s always been an unwritten rule at the LNMC that says you can link whatever music you’d like. The only times I’ve ever seen comments deleted here is when politics enters the discussion- it’s a politics-free zone.

(And for any smartass who asks what makes me the rules guy- nothing. But I’ve been here since the days when there was no Music Club.)
