Nancy is going up in my estimation. We probably can’t imagine the pressure and blackmail that has been put on some of our Democratic leaders by the fat cat Clinton cabal, but what an exciting time: I think the grassroots Democrats are going to win.

Christy Hardin Smith cutting through the “bullshit” Many of us have been saying for months the Obama and Clinton teams need to rise above all of the sniping. If they cannot we have to. We are busy eating our own and the incredible new enthusiasm that Obama has stirred up and the strength and knowledge of the Clintons needs to be used in a constructive way. I firmly believe there has all ready been permanent damage. The 2008 race is not a “slam dunk” for the Democrats.

Listening At The Political Crossroads
By: Christy Hardin Smith Thursday March 27, 2008 7:10 am

We talk a lot about the importance of active participation, and we have tried to skate that razor’s edge this primary season between the “my candidate is Jesus and yours is Satan” tendencies that keep cropping up and the need to focus — really focus — on the issues that will still be problems long after the primaries have ended. Because, ultimately, what we need is for those problems to be addressed: the economy, poverty and children at risk, foreign and military policy issues, war profiteering, health care, restoration of Constitutional balance and accountability…the list is endless as to what has been woefully neglected or deliberately mismanaged for years now.

Digby spotlighted an article from Naomi Klein and Jeremy Scahill yesterday that deserves a much, much wider read. Digby concludes her piece thusly:

The netroots chose not to do that and it seems to me we are way too invested in our chosen candidates to try to leverage our support now. But Klein and Scahill, both very fine writers and thinkers, believe it’s still possible for the anti-war movement to affect how these candidates deal with Iraq and if that’s the case then it may be worth a try. We’ve got an eternity before the next primary and just about every insult has been hurled and every paean has been written. Perhaps we could set aside our differences long enough to try to encourage our congresspeople to sign on to The Responsible Plan and make sure the Democratic presidential candidates don’t waffle on Iraq when the heat is on?

I’m still trying to clam my blood pressure after watching that bizarre bush speech this morning. Toward the end of it I thought his head was going to explode. He said some of the strangest things. Damn, according to him if we left Iraq now the world would go to hell and fires in hell would be super duper hot.

When America Can’t Handle the Truth
By Pierre Tristam

25/03/08 “ICH” — – The word, attributed to the late writer Saul Bellow, is “angelization” — willfully putting someone beyond blame. Angelizing America is the common tongue of all national politicians, the oath candidates implicitly take when running for president. It’s what the most sentimental people on Earth expect. It’s what enables a country that committed its share of atrocities in the past and is committing more than its share of moral degradations today to look itself in the mirror and see something exceptional looking back, rather than just another empire trampling down its march of folly, as the great historian Barbara Tuchman called it. Angelizing America is the unspoken, self-evident pledge of allegiance. Someone didn’t tell the Obamas.

First, there was Michelle Obama: “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change.”

Then there was Barack Obama’s spiritual adviser, the fascinating Jeremiah Wright — not the outright lies about Wright’s black separatism, which is bunk (although to most classically illiberal whites any black who adopts the fervor of Emersonian self-sufficiency is suddenly a separatist), but this, from a 2003 sermon: “The government gives (blacks) the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

Ah, come on. You know you want to keep us around if for nothing else but the entertainment factor. You know you can always count on us to liven up the show about every four years.

Back when we had a democratic governor we were just run of the mill normal folks, but as soon as we began having republican governors, that’s when the clown show began.

rj Says:

Tied to Bush policies? Bullshit. Bush is the most “dishonorable” person in American politics in history. And as far as I have seen, has not done ONE thing that is worth honoring. Does GW honor our civil liberties? The constitution? ANY international law? So why should we feel our hands are tied by any “agreements” he makes with the puppet Iraq government, and honor it? We should put the world on notice, for which I am sure the world would appreciate, that once we are rid of this dirt bag, we intend to wash the scum off and clean up our act. The most honorable thing we can do is give Dick and George a one way ticket to Den Hague.

Can a person make an open thread type comment here? If so, Joe Klein has once more proved what an idiot he is. He is now suggesting that the nomination be handed to Al Gore. I was at one time an Al Gore supporter but after Gore decided not to run in spite of literally being begged to, I am now an Obama supporter. Does Klein think that Obama and Hillary Clinton, for that matter, have exhausted themselves for the past year to now have the nomination handed to someone who sat on the sidelines for that entire year? And as an Obama supporter, one of the 2 million who have made an average donation of $109 each, I did not put my money where my mouth is to have that stolen from me. Talk about a smoke-filled room idea.
