Bush: Violence in Iraq is a "positive moment"

President Bush gave warning yesterday that Iraq’s “fragile situation” required the US to maintain a strong military presence there, even as he defended the withdrawal of British troops from Basra, the scene of heavy fighting in recent days.
In an interview with The Times, he backed the Iraqi Government’s decision to “respond forcefully” to the spiralling violence by “criminal elements” and Shia extremists in Basra. “It was a very positive moment in the development of a sovereign nation that is willing to take on elements that believe they are beyond the law,” the President said.

So if I understand right, the surge is a success if the violence goes up, or if the violence goes down, or if the violence stays the same. Wow what a magical, wonderful thing this surge is.

Someone not already aware of how our media has become a tool of the Bush administration might have been shocked at how Frontline could have missed one of President George W. Bush’s most telling “signing statements.” Underneath the recent Defense Authorization Act, he wrote that he did not feel bound by the law’s explicit prohibition against using the funding:
“(1) To establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing for the permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq,” or
“(2) To exercise United States control of the oil resources of Iraq.”

The ending of Part 2 struck me as being somewhat abrupt, so I imagine there will be more to come. Also, at some point you have to decide what to include and what not to; I gathered the story for 'Bush's War' doesn't include an investigation of Halliburton/KBR, for example, or the 'moral clarity' of waterboarding.

i don't want to defend bush by any stretch of the imagination, but if the iraqis manage to get Sadr's militias under their thumb, with malaki running the show, it could be a very good sign that the iraqi gov't has some stones.
Of course, if they fail, it means that the iraqis will continue to suffer with a weak gov't and anarchy.
It's not a good sign that Malaki extended the deadline to 10 days for the militias to give up.

1. To get rid of those weapons of mass destruction. Which was really much easier than we thought it'd be since they didn't exist. Even Bush thought it was funny and made a cute little video about him searching for the weapons and not finding them. It made all the media folks chuckle.
2. To protect the Iraqis from a brutal dictator. Remember, Saddam gassed the Kurds? But it's OK for Turkey to bomb the crap out of the same Kurds a few weeks ago because they're an ally.
3. To spread freedom and democracy! Purple fingers anyone? Iraq is a free country now and apparently the Iraqi people are choosing to die and be maimed in mass numbers. Not our fault they don't want to live in peace after we showed them how do do it by bombing their country for the past 16 years.

Its basic mil training and common sense to have an escape route planned if things get too nasty.
