Tasty stuff there, John my man! And with Phil Collins on drums, displaying some SERIOUS chops, too.

Thanks…

No way John! No disrespect to Howie but your choices are always the best. I see a great prog rock outfit or some RTF and I know where it’s coming from.

Yeah, I first heard these guys in the late ’80s (by a boss in a ski repair shop who corrupted my adolescent mind in many other ways as well), and if anyone ever wants / needs to gain a LOT of respect for the musicianship of Phil Collins, check out Brand X. He absoulutely smokes on drums…..almost enough to forgive Sussudio…..

I prefer the Mahavishnu Orchestra to Brand X.

I even prefer Gabriel-less Genesis to Brand X. Although, the bassist is excellent. He appeared on Brian Eno’s chef d’oeuvre “Before and After Science.”

School Days……Stanley Clarke.
Oh, Did I mention that Return to Forever was going on tour.
Playing in SF in mid June.
When I first met my wife, I took her out to a show , Stanley Clarke.
in a very small club.
memorable night.
yeah,she dug it.

Le Roi Est Mort @ 14:

Jaco Pastorius got what he deserved.

His sound is excruciatingly unbearable.

hey. Don’t listen then.

And how sweet of you to say someone deserves mental illness and homelessness, and being beaten to death by a bouncer in a club for sneaking in. Because you don’t dig their bass playing.

Where’s that humanitarian award I heard you got?

Nice one, mudshark. This was the fusion era. Pop and rock sucked so much, I never listened from the early 70s until new wave.

I just listened to jazz, worked in a jazz club, walked in on Eddie-old guy-something or other-got shot over drugs-singer-was it Jefferson? Snorting some white powder in the boiler room. Had to be a mix, judging from the performance, which wasn’t too laid back or to hyped up…Met a young young Marsalis, Bob Dorough, Blossom Dearie-I can’t remember them all, but those were the days

He (Pastorius) offends my sensibilities. I like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Zawinul, however. Although Joe’s lame synthesizer tones and Wayne’s soprano sax with The Weather Report are equally as offensive as Pastorius’ transgressions. Wayne and Joe have contributed to the creation of canonical, beautiful works. Shorter’s “Zuzu” and Zawinul’s work with Cannonball and Miles on “In a Silent Way” make up for any slip-ups. What’s Jaco have? His work on Mitchell’s “Mingus” album? That’s it? To Hell with him. He has no cause for beatification to the pantheon of great jazz musicians.

Post Script:
Eno’s lovely ode to Zawinul from his “Another Green World” album comes to mind: Zawinul/Lava.

That night. Under the Pier (Concerts by the Sea) in Redondo Beach Ca. He let this kid up on stage.Couldn’t have been older than 21 ,braces and all. This kid got up there and just blew Stanley’s mind. I’ll never forget the look on his face. Shit…..the whole place went back…..maybe……20 feet..I was resting my feet on the edge of the stage. He came over and started School Days right in front of us.I still have a hard time believing I was that close. And they served drinks too.
unfuckingbelievable.

No problem you don’t like him. But at the end he was a drugged up drunken bi polar manically depressed mess. I wouldn’t wish that on someone because they played shitty music. I’ve been around it, and it’s hell on acquaintances, neighbours, friends and loved ones.

Why don’t you post some of the stuff you like? I’d like to hear it, and that’s what LNMC is for… :D

I wasn’t critiquing Mr. Amato’s Posting of Brand X, I was stating my opinion of a fusion bassist whom someone mentioned.

Personally, I find Percy Jones’ playing quite enchanting. Pastorius could’ve learned a thing or two.

I have been trying to post, telling people to lay off Le Roi-I tore him a new one already. I was hoping we could get him to post here. We all say dumb mean shit. Let’s kiss and make up..I’ve been vetting this because it’s 24 minutes long. And I want to assure you all it’s smokin hot. And I search this guy because Le Roi brought him up

You’re yanking the chain Leroy. You obviously aren’t familiar with Jaco’s body of work. And if you are, you must be an unfulfilled “wanna be” musician yourself. And that weird French U-Tube peice you linked to (@ comment 25) is nowhere near the genre we’re considering here; mid-seventies “fusion”. I hope Mr. Amato posts a Pastorius featured piece here, and you can choke on it! You didn’t have to be so mean to the dead, to state your ignorant opinion.

No better than the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, if that’s the case!

BTW, Le Roi, I love Gainsbourg. I have this in my Bookmarks Bonnie and Clyde. I have John Zorn’s Great Jewish Composers: Serge Gainsbourg. Covers of his stuff…I loved it when he called Catherine Ringer a slut and she called him a smelly drunk that no one could understand Gainsbourg insulte Catherine Ringer and when he told Whitney Houston “I wahnt to fock ‘er” French guys. So romantique.

Miss Hussein Kitty, thanks for the relative peace.
I thought this was a forum. I’ve enjoyed C&L for years.

If I know one thing, however, it is music. That’s why I was so inclined to chip in.

None to shabby for a 24 year old, methinks. How many of us are familiar with Corea’s work in Return to Forever, Brand X, Gabriel Era Genesis, Cannonball Adderly, Jozef Zawinul, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, Serge Gansbourg, or, for that matter, Jaco Pastorius?

45
Le Roi Est Mort Says:

If anything, I consider myself a musical emisary. Music is my first love, and my second passion. It’s neither my wife, nor my life, but close.

I am. And I got into all of them around the age of 18 with the exception of Gainsbourg.
That was all contemporary music in my day.

And again-it’s great to have someone chip in criticism that is well thought out, as you did in your following comment. I went to art school. I love criticism. I like reading people criticising stuff I like, in a thoughtful way, because it makes me listen differently.
Corea’s a Scientologist though. Like his stuff, don’t like to give him dosh.
