Montel Williams Calls Out Conservative Soundbiter

We usually don’t cover daytime TV here at C&L, but Montel Williams told the truth to conservative commentator Rachel Alexander’s blah blah blah blaming the Democratic Congress for “bogging down” healthcare for veterans:

Montel will also address the ever growing problem in America of soldiers who are returning home from Iraq with insurmountable injuries and financial problems. We’ll hear from Jerry, whose vehicle was hit just before he was scheduled to return from his second tour in Iraq. After first being pronounced dead at the scene, Jerry was later revived and treated at the burn center, only to be released early due to overcrowding. How can our troops be treated like this after putting their lives on the line?

Montel particularly points out that our “reservist” President Commander-in-Chief ought to “quit turning his back on those who are doing his dirty work.”

I’d never thought I’d ever say this, but Go Montel! It’s not a political issue at all. This goes beyond the political lines, and I’m glad he put this thing in it’s place.

I always thought Montel was a joke, but he seemed to hit the nail on the head with this one. Kudos, Montel. Kudos.

Rachel and her brother Andrew are co-Editors of Intellectual Conservative. Rachel practices law in Phoenix, AZ.

Note to the haters: Ms. Alexander has never posted on a salon.com blog called World o Crap and to say otherwise is false as well as libelous.

Apparently a right wing hack and a paranoid snob as well. lol

Not surprising. He was the first black at the US Naval Preparatory School. A year later, he went to the US Naval Academy. He served during the U.S. invasion of Grenada and has more than half a dozen medals. He went for the money on TV and who can blame him. I’d respect the man more if only he’d drop the daytime TV stupidity and focus more on issues. His 22 years of military service give him more than enough credibility to wade back from the quagmire of paternity tests and out-of-control teens.

c.blog ad.com is what is freezing up my computer for at least a minute or more this time. Is this something new to the site? Today is the first time I have had this problem.

Just good to get this message about the vets out to the daytime tv watchers. I think a lot of people who watch these shows don’t spend a great deal of time on computers to find out what is really going on.

Yes there are so many new little AD BOT THINGS here my computer is fucking up a little too. It is a shame that our experience here is being degraded - I mean it is bad enough to have to ignore them, but when they start fucking with your computer it takes some of the fun out…

Geraldo did some great work in his early years on TV (he really helped to reform the mental health systems in this country), but, after a while he found himself opening Al Capone’s vault.

I think it’s got less to do with people like Geraldo and Montel, and more to do with the dumbed-down medium that television has become.

This is phony outrage against a terribly unpopular president to gain the favor of his panel and audience. He let this silly woman sneak in all kinds of crappy right-wing ‘truths’ that went uncontested… they even showed the vet nodding along as she was blasting the Democrats!

Montel might have been sincere here, but he needs to control his forum better… and the guy is a spokesman for PhRMA so I have a hard time trusting him in anyway :)

WASHINGTON — Seventeen of the nation’s 50 largest cities had high-school-graduation rates lower than 50 percent, with the lowest graduation rates reported in Detroit, Indianapolis and Cleveland, according to a report released today.

The report, issued by America’s Promise Alliance, found that about half of the students served by public-school systems in the nation’s largest cities receive diplomas.

She says that military and defense are the two most important services government provides. Well, if thats the case when has Bush ever shown he he cared about government that actually works? Certainly not from his political appointees.

What is state of our military today after 5 years in Iraq?

And am i to believe ever that is wrong with the VA happened only AFTER democrats took 1 vote majority in the senate in 2006? Thinks were just awesome under the Rethugs majority wand Bush the first 4 years of the Afghanistan/Iraq wars? We all rememebr right hearing Bush demand every day congress do more for vets from start of this war? Dont we?

Who the hell is she kidding?

the Devious thing is , the troops are there to establish permanent bases and maintain them, so lets get the crap out and tell the TRUTH , besides the BEST way to “SUPPORT the Troops”is to not send them to war for OIL ; for projecting power ; for establishing permanent bases and to support the war profiteers and I hope that Oliver Stone’s new movie about George ” accused war criminal ” bUsh , pulls no punches and if that slum lord talk show Chris MaTtHEWS HAS A PROBLEM with STONE ” making up ” stuff in his past movies , here’s another REALITY CHECK . There is ample, irrefutable proof that bush and cheney had maps of Iraq’s oil reserves on their desk prior to the illegal war ; planned way back in the early 90’s according to their own words to invade , that’s laid out in PNAC and CUI BONO ( who BENEFITS ).

You don’t NEED to make up anything about bush Matthews , there’s enough to charge him with WAR CRIMES . So keep your phony arguments , when you have admitted the war , the WAR , the WAR was wrong .

“The cost of war is socialized and the profits are privatized ” and the troops and American people and mostly the Iraqi people people have paid the bill and will continue to for maybe 100 YEARS , if Sen. McCain has his way , Lets hope not .

What I found disturbing is the nods of agreement from the wounded veteran when she started on her talking-point rant. It would appear that brainwashing of military personnel is very thorough since the advent of the all volunteer army. Most veterans post-1970s seem to take it as an article of faith that the Democratic party is bad for the military, ergo, bad for the country. These are otherwise sharp independent-thinking people except for politics. At least those that I am acquainted with. That seems is really insidious as they have been as affected by the awful policies of this admininstration as any of us and, in so many cases, even more.

I hope that’s not an April Fools joke, if it isn’t it’s the best news of he day. Shining a little sunshine on Wal-Mart’s greed worked out well for that lady and her family.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Either Montel agrees with the substance of her arguments and only (justifiably) called her out on crass opportunism or he missed/backed off from a real opportunity obliterating her repub talking point lies because he got caught up in being mad (also understandable, btw).

We owe our freedom to our Constitution and our (nearly dead) respect for the rule of law. We don’t need more soldiers, and we certainly don’t need more blind loyalty to a flag. We need more rational, informed citizens.

I was struck by the vet shaking his head in agreement with her too.

When I hear anyone saying the soldiers in Iraq are fighting for our freedom it makes me want to ask them, when was Iraq ever a threat to our freedom? Our biggest threat to our freedom works in the oval office.

Absolutely. And may I add that in my humble opinion it is every civilian’s duty to protect the military personnel from themselves, bad policy, bad politicians, etc, because I understand it (and please, anybody feel free to correct me if I am wrong or enhance my point if I am on track), being in the military limits how much and often one can speak out against the leadership and bad policy. The way I see it there is a balance to be kept here: we protect, defend, and support each other.

You certainly have a right to your opinion so I would like to offer mine in response.

The current CIC has corrupted the military by entering them in to this illegal war and occupation. Even though you may not believe that the military is not protecting your freedoms they do stand ready to protect the shores of this country should we be invaded by a hostile force. The fact that they are in Iraq is not their doing and unless they’re ready to go to the Brig they go where they’re told when they’re told. They have families to think of, retirements to think of, and all the can do is go over and do the best they can while trying to stay alive. People may think it easy for a military person to say no to deployment but you have to think how you would react if standing up to your boss would mean going to jail. And not just jail, but a military Brig and after a courts-martial and a dishonorable discharge as well.

There are some in the military that have done horrible things to the innocents in Iraq and others that have done good things for the Iraqi people (operating as best they can within the system). Though the Bush syncophants always preach that everyone joined the military post 9/11 to kill terrorists you have a lot of people in the military that joined so they could take care of their families (including health care for their dependents), get an education, or to simply to have a job so they could live. You have National Guard who joined not only for the educational benefits but because the Guard did humanitarian work during times of natural disasters. The National Guard has no business being in Iraq but due to the present state of the military they keep getting sent back time and time again.

I understand you’re angry, we all are but I hope that we all keep our eyes on who is at fault here. Rail against the president, the vice president, Congress, the civilians at the Pentagon like Rumsfeld, but try to look at our troops with a modicum of compassion. If you happen to watch Bush’s
