The NCAA FINAL FOUR

Love that Basketball

UCLA vs Memphis

North Carolina vs Kansas

It's the first time in tournament history that all #1 seeds made the final four. I'm a big UCLA fan, but Memphis is very good and it should be a great game. Josh Shipp has been in a slump and needs to hit a few 3's if they are going to win it all because they will have problems if Collison is the only Bruin hitting outside shots. Kevin Love is awesome. NC looks like the team to beat, but they should all be good games and any one of them can win the title.

Update: Logan and Mike F. are big KU fans so they'll be rooting hard for the Jayhawks.

For college hoop fans, what say you?

memphis!

I'm just glad it's not my school again. Do you know how hard it is to buy a scantron when half the campus and most of the surrounding neighborhoods are flocking to the bookstore to buy Mason NCAA paraphanalia?

Is that the number 42? I guess if it's the answer to life, the universe and everything than I guess it can represent love. Now you'll excuse me, the batteries on my Babel fish are getting low.

......DON"T PANIC!........

GO MEMPHIS!!!!

Round one is my favorite part of the tournament. My second favorite part is the day that Duke loses. The Final Four usually is anti-climatic, unless MSU is there.

Oh...wait. Is this the thread in which I'm supposed to comment on how stupid it is to care about sports, or is it the one in which I'm supposed to remind everyone how much better SNL was xx years ago? Sometimes I just get so confused...

dancinfool @ 4:

GO MEMPHIS!!!!

Gotta tell you, they're a lot more impressive than I thought they'd be. I don't remember them missing a shot in the first half against MSU (though I had my eyes closed for the last 10 minutes).

My daughter's a student at UNC, so ... GO HEELS!

This is the only final four that matters: http://www.denver.org/frozenfour/default.htm

GO BLUE!!

As my name suggests, KU! I attended KU from 1995-2001 and lived across the street from Allan Fieldhouse. Each season, I breathed in the teasingly sweet aroma of victory only to have to choke on the the bitter fumes of defeat. It has been 20 years. The Hawks are ready! We are with you!
Thank you, Mr. Self! Thank you, Roy! Let's play some ball! Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU!

U...C...L...A... UCLA FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT

John, how could you say something about every team except for the obvious winner, Kansas?

As did Catherineku, I attended Kansas from 1996 to 2001 (lived in Ellsworth and on Tennessee, thank you).

I will be waiving the wheat tonight when we ring out NC and he who shall not be named.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, KU!

UCLA is the only team left on my bracket, so I'm going with them. Pac-10 forever and always.

I'm just going to get this out of the way:

Sports are dumb. You are stupid. I go to websites where they talk about sports and tell them that they are stupid. Why is it when there is a sports topic on this site, all of the other topics disappear. Sports are a distraction. I don't watch them. I don't listen to music or watch tv or go to the movies or the art museum or read fiction because I am more concerned about the state of the world than you because I am better than you.

Why do you dummies make me do this?

*snark off*

After they destroyed the Spartans, I've got to root for Memphis. I'd like to see one team called the Tigers win a couple of games this week, too.

Seems like the money's on Memphis but...GO HEELS!!!

I'm not a big basketball fan. Its the squeaky shoes on the court that always get me.  I'm much more of a world cup or American football fan when it comes to sports.  I'll have to go with NC though.  My sister lives there.

Let's go Tar Heels!!

I'd tap that! Sorry.

Do you follow professional football- soccer, that is- at all, Joe O.? Coming down to the last few rounds of the UEFA Champions League. It's all I've been listening to lately (on Sirius). I'm rooting for an all English Premiership semi(Liverpool, Man U., Arsenal and- ugh- Chelsea), though I wouldn't mind it if Thierry Henry and Barca won that Cup.

Go UNC!!!

One reason I like sports, even if I don't generally have a taste for them, is that these athletes help pioneer therapies and surgeries for maintaining an aging population.

Lets go UCLA.

Bread and Circus ..

Beer and Spectator Sports on the TV ..

Rooting for Memphis, but it looks to be a damn good final four.

NC and UCLA in the final. NC wins by score of 76-70

I'll have to agree with you John, if only for my extreme West-Coast bias.
Ya gotta love Love.

I'm rooting for UCLA because my half-sister in law goes there.

But the amusing thing is for the first time I've gotten involved in a NCAA pool. It's run by a Detroit sportswriter I know. I know nothing about college basketball. Nothing. I made my picks with no research. In some cases, I made my picks on which mascot would win a fight.

I'm beating the sportswriter. He is never living this one down.

GO BLUE!!

Frozen four is not bad, but I much prefer these guys: http://www.chl.ca/

Regardless of the sport they play, when it comes to college/junior level, there is something truly inspiring about watching these kids leave it all out on the court/field/ice for nothing more than love of the game.

Josh Shipp vs Douglas-Roberts

Edge >> Memphis

Josh Shipp won't be guarding CDR, L.A. Confidential. That job will be left to Luc Richard Mbah-Moute, who does have a defensive edge over CDR. Offensively, though, Shipp will be outclassed.

That said, UCLA wins.

I dig your Bruin love a lot more than your unfortunate Dodgeritis, John.

Lew Alcindor! Bill Walton! Sidney Wicks! The Wizard of Westwood! Go UCLA!

Yeah, Henry had a shot on goal for Barca against Schalke that was saved...but Barca scored on the rebound to win it! Henry played a good game(he was moved from the wing to the middle-front in the second half). I expect, kinda sadly, to see him in the MLS soon. Until we can keep good, young homegrown talent here, that league, like the NASL that preceded it, will be a minor league that features formerly great world talent on the downside of their careers.

Oh, yeah, I should give some love to Jozy Altidore of the Red Bulls. But I think he'll end up in Europe soon. If guys like Altidore and Benny Feilhaber continue to progress at the rate they have thus far, I see good things for the US in the South Africa '10 World Cup.

KU all the way! If they play to their potential, the title will belong to the Jayhawks! Go KU!

It's very exciting having all the #1 seeds make it to the FF, each team has an equal shot!

I'm looking for Kansas to go all the way.

Born and raised on tobacco road. No teams can match ACC teams. Go Heels

I really wanted to see Davidson-Carolina, but the wunderkind choked vs Kansas last week. I pick UNC. O yeah, LOL @ the Big East.

memphis has a very athletic team....ucla has great d....should be a good game

im rooting for kansas over nc, but nc should eak out a win

i have nc winning the whole thing, but wouldnt be surprised if memphis takes it all

This is gonna be tough, considering Liverpool and Aesenal are currently playing in the quarters...1-1 as they head to the Kop (they also played a 1-1 game today in a regular season EPL fixture).

As for the hoops, it's as simple as A-B-C.

You're correct! I'm getting thrown off, I think, because I've been listening to games on Sirius, hearing all kinds of replays (I think I've heard that first leg of Barca-Schalke 5 times now), and just getting confused. But we can still get an all Premiership final, right? I'll root for anyone but Chelsea- or Roma. And I'm really happy that AC Milan is gone- can't pull for any team owned by a fascist like Berlusconi.

UCLA will win their 12th National Championship in basketball, adding to their 100 combined National Championships in men's and women's sports. That's why you see the gold C on the jerseys. C is the Roman numeral for 100 and they are the first University to reach that plateau.

Back in 1965 or 66 (I think it was) I was a young lad watching a Dodger-Giants game on TV. Koufax on the mound. Johnny Roseboro the catcher. Juan Marishal at the plate. Koufax throws an inside heater, Marchal backs away from the pitch and turns around and attacks Roseboro with the baseball bat and hit him over the head. I've hated the Giants ever since.

Gettin' nitpicky here, but that's not exactly what happened, Captain.

Walt Alston wanted Koufax to throw chin-music, but Koufax wouldn't. Koufax never threw at batters. He refused to do it. Sandy was a real mensch.

Since Koufax wouldn't throw inside, after a pitch Roseboro zipped the ball back to Koufax, making his toss veeeerry close to Marichal's ear. Marichal turned to confront Roseboro and...

Roseboro was holding his mask in his hand, and was raising it up as he stepped closer to Marichal. The Giant pitcher thought that Roseboro was about to hit him with the mask, so he used his bat to fend off the perceived attack. He hit Roseboro in the head, causing a concussion(and, to be fair: it was a "check swing", not a full rip).

Roseboro confirmed this. Later on the two men became good friends. And Marichal ended his career as a Dodger.

You are probably correct mostly. I was about 9 years old and it was the impression I was left with. In my mind I have Marishal taking a couple three atmpted overhead swings but who knows.
After writting about it I looked it up on Wiki and I had forgotten about the Roseboro being accused of the close throws back to the pitcher and I also forgot about Willie Mays walking Roseboro back to the dugout. Mays was pissed and it was a big thing, the Mays part. At least in my mind.

I attended my first Tigers' game on 7/26/73- my eighth birthday. Tigers hosted the Red Sox. Night game. My five year-old sister fell asleep in the seventh inning, so we left the park in the middle of the eighth. The Tigs were down 2-1. We get to the car, same score, bottom of the ninth, when little Eddie Brinkman hit a two run shot to win it. That's how I remembered it, anyway.

So last summer, on the 34th anniversary of that night, I checked the box score on line, and to my surprise, the Tigs won something like 6-5. The score had been much higher when we left the park. I had been wrong about it for 34 years. Go figure!

And I can't fault you for hating the Giants, but I can't blame Giants' fans for hating the Dodgers. You and I both know that the rivalry precedes those clubs' relocation to California. But I think you get to claim superiority as a fan, because its Giants' fans who chucked 9volt batteries at Dodgers' players. That sucks!

Let's see if my favorite Mays clip is still at YouTube....

Ahh, here it is! Pay attention!

UCLA was overrated, just look who they played so far in the tournament, plus their conference. I respect the school spirit, but they didn't really have a chance. Plus the announcers can't worship Love into playing well, though they tried.

Pure crap. All of it except "they tried".
-Best conference.
-Not the easiest road to the FF
-...and "they didn't have a chance"???? Ahem...They were a #1 seed in the west.

Like I said... crap.

You said it.

Greatest cheer in sports, with one short-lived exception.

Austin Peay used to have a player whose nickname was "The Fly"(Williams? Doesn't really matter..) The Colonels' cheer at the time was, "Unzip the Fly! Go Peay!"

"We're #1! Let's go Peay!"

I dig your Bruin love a lot more than your unfortunate Dodgeritis, John.

Lew Alcindor! Bill Walton! Sidney Wicks! The Wizard of Westwood! Go UCLA!

ANyone other than the SF Giants...I root a little for the Dodgers.

No worries this year, John. I wouldn't be surprised if the NY football Giants score more points in 16 games than the SF baseball Giants. They're offense is that bad.

The first college basketball game I can remember was MSU/Indiana, and I've been an MSU fan ever since. The first championship game I watched in full was NC State/Houston. My best friend and I were cheering for NC State because they were the underdog; we kept the score on a piece of poster board and then teased my older brother for long after the "pass" and dunk to end it.

Holy cow. I know it's early, but this Kansas/NC game is a beat down.

NC got pwned. I like Memphis in the title game

Rock Chalk, Jayhawk! Should be a great final against Memphis. Go KU! Roy who?

Solid wins by both teams. Another coin flip for Monday's game.

We did it! Yes!!! Go KU!!!!

Gotta cheer for KU. In a state with not much else going on, the Jayhawks mean more to Kansans than any possible alternative. Until she died at 86, my aunt who lived in southeast Kansas watched the games religiously knew the history of the program back into the 1930s. She didn't have team junk, but she clearly cared how the program was managed. When Roy Williams moved to UNC, she was disappointed but informed me bravely, "Kansas basketball is bigger than any coach--we'll find a better one." Turns out she was right (RIP).

Memphis Fan here!

It's our Year! It's our time!!!!!

GO TIGERS!!!!!!

The nickname for the AP team is the "Governors", not the "Colonels".

Ever since I watched the Duke/UNC game at the end of the regular season I have not been sold on the Tar Heels. There lack of solid and consistent guard play eventually spelled doom last night. The title game should be interesting. Both teams have solid guards that are big and can defend. I guess it is time to dispatch of all the greatest Final Four ever talk huh?
