Late Night Music Club with The Clash

The Clash were my favorite group for a really long time. The theme song for my radio show was “Complete Control.” And I still love their music. “Washington Bullets” is a very perceptive analysis of American foreign policy and it has certainly more than held up over time. When you listen, remember that the album, Sandinista, was recorded in 1980, almost 3 decades ago!

Ironically a DVD collection of live Clash performances was released last Tuesday. “The Clash Live Revolution Rock”. I miss Joe Strummer.

Joe Strummer remained true to his principles all his life (except perhaps when he let Jaguar use a Clash song in a TV ad). There’s a nice collection of essays about him titled Let Fury Have the Hour. If you can find it, it’s worth the cover price.

Ah the Clash…mmm not a favorite o mine growing up in Liverpool. I preferred the Specials, Selecter and The Beat. I really wanted to be a Rude Boy. My Scottish Father would shake his head and intone: “O Fer Fs sake son stop being a wanka”

Sandinista, was recorded in 1980, almost 3 decades ago!

And released in ‘81, iirc. I bought it with money I got for my 16th birthday. The guys at Music Magic, where I hung out after school, gave me a 50% discount, too! This one’s for Brad, the Mad Lad, Tyree and Jim F., the guys who turned me on to a lot of cool music:

George Clinton

Atomic Dog

The Clash

Always loved the song, “Charlie Don’t Surf”, and was lucky enough to see The Clash for the “Combat Rock” tour, so many years ago. Thanks for this one C&L.

I can’t exactly remember the David Lee Roth quote about the Clash but it was something along the lines of “That’s great they have all these political lyrics about changing the world but in the end they couldn’t even keep their own band together.” I always remember that because even though I’m no fan of Van Halen and I remain a big Clash fan, harmonious living has to start with those around you.

Kinda amazing when you listen to the overall sound of the album that it was released in 81… I listened to it for the first time in ‘03 when i was 15 and was completely blown away by it… i can only wonder how much more amazing it would of been to hear if i was 15 back in ‘81 or even born in ‘81 for that matter.

OK, here’s some fun clips.

The Clash were in Wessex Studios recording London Calling at the same time The Damned were there recording Machine Gun Etiquette (one of the great British punk albums…get it.)

Anyway, here’s The Damned’s Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies doing a Mandolin and Spoons version of “New Rose” with Joe Strummer jumping into the scene at the end:

My favorite band when I was growing up in the 80s. Almost all their albums were great. Too Much Joy had famous lyrics - “Every great band should be shot, before they make their ‘Combat Rock’”. Not true - ‘Cut the Crap’ was no good but ‘Combat Rock’ was great. Love the video for ‘Washington Bullets’. I posted earlier today about the Geto Boys rap song ‘Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangster’ (most famous from the movie ‘Office Space’). In my opinion , no song greater epitomizes the Bush-Cheney administration than that one: it could easily replace ‘Hail to the Chief’. Someone, with computer resources I don’t have, should make a Bush-Cheney video with that song.
Other great punk bands that need mentioning: in America - Bad Brains and The Descendants; 2nd generation U.S. - The Replacements and The Minutemen: straight out of Leeds - Gang of Four and, 2nd only to The Clash, THE MEKONS.

The Clash is one of my all-time fave bands. The Who is the other. If you left me on that proverbial desert island with only London Calling and Quadrophenia, I just might survive.

I only saw The Clash live once but it was a doozy: The 16 Tons (i.e. London Calling) tour at Boston’s Orpheum Theater. I remember it vividly. It was a life changing event. About 7 years later I met and interviewed Joe Strummer. He strolled in toting his trusty Telecaster sans case. The guitar still had a Sandinista!-era set list taped to its back.

From “The Guns of Brixton”:

“When they kick at your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun

When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting on death row”

I’ll drink to that!

In the summer of 1979, when I was fifteen, I stopped by the house of one of my older brother’s friends. He said “You gotta check out this album!” It was “London Calling”. The next morning, my small collection of cassettes (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, Journey, etc) went straight into the trash. It was a complete alteration of perspective that I will never forget. Eight years later, when I graduated from college, I received a CD player as a graduation gift. The same guy who turned me on to “London Calling ” gave me the 3-CD set of “Sandinista”.

I’ll never be able to thank him enough….

Thanks for posting The Clash. I grew up listening to them and reveling in how powerful their songs were — and obviously still are today.

Gonna have to break out some of their stuff for my daughters.

RIP Joe Strummer.

Thanks for posting this — and to the various commenters for the links — I haven’t heard Ghost Town in years. Love it. LOVE the Clash. My nephew gave me _Passion is a Fashion_ for Christmas (and Global a go go for my birthday) — I strongly recommend it (or both).
