Bill Clinton accuses the Obama campaign of playing the race card
By scarce Tuesday Apr 22, 2008 11:00am
Bill Clinton is still upset about what happened during the South Carolina primary. The victimization used in this campaign has been tiring. From the WHYY blog:
“I think that they played the race card on me. We now know, from memos from the campaign that they planned to do it along.” - President Bill Clinton.
And that’s how President Clinton begins his answer to WHYY’s Susan Phillips who, during a phone interview earlier this evening, asked the President how he feels about one Philadelphia official who says she switched her support after interpreting Clinton’s remarks in South Carolina as an attempt to marginalize Obama as “the black candidate.”
Unbeknownst, President Clinton expresses himself:
His frustration comes through towards the end of the recording when, apparently unaware that he was still on the line, Clinton asks whoever is with him, “I don’t think I should take any shit from anybody on that, do you?
However, today Bill Clinton denied saying what he said:
CLINTON: “No, no, no. That’s not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games, and I’m not going to play your games today. This is a day about election day. Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. You have mischaracterized it to get another cheap story to divert the American people from the real urgent issues before us, and I choose not to play your game today. Have a nice day.”

that (big) dog don't hunt anymore.
He sounds like a whiner. Insisting on making his wife a victim. I thought he had more...panache than that. He needs to STFU.
Nevermind. I'll save myself the grief.
CLINTON: “No, no, no. That’s not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games, and I’m not going to play your games today. This is a day about election day. Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. Wow...just fucking wow...talk about hypocrisy...I am fast losing what respect I had for the Clintons...
Uh...Bill? Have you been listening to Hillary lately???
Let's discuss the memo from the Obama camp inciting the race card shall we????
Bill needs to stop making this campaign all about him. Sometimes it seems he's trying to sabotage her campaign, even if he doesn't realize it. When he made those remarks about her Bosnia trip, even after the story was trying to die, it was very strange. Why would he do that? After he made his comments, he proved them to both be fabricating. Not a wise move. And then in the episode which is the topic of this post, he did it again. He needs to either hush or be much more careful about what he says.
Ruh Roh, Raggy!
I don't understand what has happened to the democratic party. Before the almighty barack obama came along the dems loved the clintons, but now democrats love bashing him and his wife. Is it because bill is a proven leader and has actually done something in his life and not just talked a lot and spewed the word "change," to a bunch of sheep?
Bill thinks he can confuse issues. Just because he's probably not a racist doesn't mean he won't use racism if he thinks it will help his wife's campaign. In South Carolina, he did.
Isn't there some kind of secluded island that we can just drop off ex presidents so we won't have to deal with them anymore?
Well said Bill. You shouldn't have to take that shit.
While still supporting Edwards I read about the accusations against Bill Clinton and the Clinton camp that they were being racists. It's one accusation I take seriously. I investigated. I went to the source and to youtube.com to find what was said. In each instance I found the attack on BC unjustified. The "fairy tale" one was the most unreasonable attack. After Edwards did poorly in SC, I decided to look into each candidate in term of accomplishments because that's the measure of what a person is about. I was astonished how involved HRC was her whole life time in creating change for many that needed help. I felt the Obama camp had used race to attack the Clintons, and that kind of attack is unforgivable. BO said that race would not matter, but in SC where half the voters are African Americans, he used it to divide.
"We have to CHANGE! Time to turn the PANGE!"
liberalHUSSEINmoderation @ 4:
I think it's more like they are destroying the respect a whole bunch of us had for them. Especially Bill, I hate like hell to see him doing these things. I thought he was so much better than he is proving himself to be. It does make me sad to watch him become this person I see and hear today.
All Dems are "fair game" to the five warmongering, war profiteering multinational media conglomerates that essentially support the neoconservative agenda.)
Clinton also said he did not have sex with that woman. He is nothing but a liar. He and his wife are power hungry and she will use that power to finish the job that Bush started, the complete destruction of this country.
Bill....lie to your lying ass wife, not to us, you pathetic big butt loving, race carding freak! I don't give a shit if McWar is Prez, I will not insult my ancestors who risked their lives to give me the right to vote, by pissing my vote away to a woman who is clearly race baiting. Fuck you, Bill.
Once the campaign's over I'll forgive him. He still did a lot of good. They're just desperate, and it's showing their ugly side. Everyone has an ugly side. I'm hoping to see Obama's when it's just him and McSame.
Bill...I think that it is us who shouldn't have to take any more shit from YOU. Run back to pappi bush.
Left&Left @ 18:
You may as well be working for the Neocons just vote McCain and shut up.
Mention "Clinton" and you count of them "Billary" haters to come out in force thats a given.
miguel @ 9:
Perhaps the Democratic party constituents are wising up?
Since Nancy Pelosi became George Bush's butt licker, I've watched a steady shift in attitude.
A few years ago, I could get quite a few folks to agree that a Democrat that walks, quacks and legislates, exactly like a Right Wing War Hawk Republican is better than a an Anti-War Republican, that sometimes votes like a Democrat.
Now I think the Name Branding is losing it's luster. Fewer and fewer support the Republican Hand Puppets that have the Democrat Tag Sewn into their Shirts.
I am however surprised by the Democrats ability to forgive and forget serial back stabbers. Evidently though after being stab in the back by the same people over and over, over the years, they do eventually catch on.
Where's Paul in LA? He needs to jump in and defend Nancy. I think I am still owed that laundry list of great accomplishments that he ascribes to Nancy Pelosi. The gal who worked hard to promote the war and has worked to keep and going and has sidetracked every effort to end it. I'm convinced that she is a Republican plant, serving as a Democrat in name only. A wolf, dressed in sheep's clothing feeding on sheep while getting in fron of the mics, saying, "baah".
LAConfidential@21
And you can just go and shine Bill's shoes "toby". Me, I have honor and I will not vote for her because I don't believe in her!
The whole Clinton campaign is premised on the proposition that an important and reliable Democratic constituency will find any reason not to vote for an African American in the general election. That is the constant mantra. What is unsaid is that Hillary has some serious negatives which could lead new voters and other important Demcoratic constituencies not to vote for Hillary or to sit on their hands.
“I don’t think I should take any shit from anybody on that, do you?"

Except mebbe from Spike Lee, Massah Clinton.
I have growth tired of the incessant blathering of Bill Clinton. The man attains the highest office position in the land and could not keep his dick in his pants; any respect I had for him disappeared after his loose dick incident. Simply put, the man has become a blowhard or he's looking to get blown. Why Hillary never left his sorry ass is very telling. Bill needs to shut his mouth, and fade into the woodwork.
Go Obama!
Left&Left @ 24:
Do what you want I'm not trying to stop you. Try believing in yourself for once that might help.
All Clintons and Bushes need to GO AWAY, and get out of our lives.
Eight years isn't enough for Bill?
Just go away, Clinton: Get out of our f****** lives and let us try to repair the damage YOU and the Bushes have done to us and our country, beginning with media monopolies, NAFTA, a fake war, and an out-of-control health insurance industry.
What kind of presidential candidate begs for money and takes credits. Bush doesn't beg, he takes it from us. Judging by her fiscal talents, Clinton's presidency will suck big time.
The progressive blogs are digging their own grave with this NON STOP Clinton bashing. While you guys have been doing the dirty work for Obama, and being very astute in doing so, Clinton marches on. When Obama gets a little shit thrown in his face....you all starty whining and crying.
If you read this Bill Clinton story with a half open mind, you will see that he is always being put in a corner by the media. This has been their way of keeping him shut up.
There is no way in hell Obama will win in the general election. Obama and his supporters have shown that he is nothing more than an empty suit. WE DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT OPRAH...WE CARE ABOUT OUR COUNTRY.
I would vote for Ron Paul over Obama any day of the week.
John Avarois had meetings with the Clintons, was turned down for a job and now he spends his life telling lies about them.
The Lady Huffington bans anyone from her site that calls her on her shit about Hillary.
The media whore that runs the Dailey Kos is hoping for a gig with Obama.
When the democrats loose this election you can thank the above folks along with
Chris Matthews, John King, Dana Bash, Jessica Yellin, Lou Dobbs, Wolf Blitzer and
the biggest fucking back stabbing hypocrite of all Donna (big as the country of) Brazil.
You're no longer hip, Bubba.
That tenor shit is moldy.
1) The question posed to him was not printed..why?
"Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. "
How can we respond to his "denial" if we don't see how it was twisted?
2)Anyone (especially Progressives who should KNOW better) who tells me
I should believe what the media tells me without critically questioning them, after SEVEN YEARS OF THE SAME MEDIA COVERING FOR BUSH which is now covering Obama, are ignorant, or willfully ignoring facts.
3)Oh, the media always treats bill and hillary fair

4)As a black writer put it, if Obama had a problem with Bill raising Jesse Jackson's success in North Carolina, and Obama didn't want to be known as 'the black candidate":
. If Obama didn’t want to be compared to Jesse Jackson, maybe he shouldn’t have put R&B in his SC advertisements, shouldn’t have sent black-only emissaries to the Black SC community, and should have put Wright, who was doing the rounds, on pause. The message in South Carolina put out by Obama’s campaign, whether the media wanted to ignore it or not, was “Vote for me I am Black.” To then come back and smash Bill Clinton for mentioning Jesse Jackson, that’s audacity; Axelrod made this clear through his surrogates, while he had Obama say that what the Clintons’
Funny how this comment escaped scathing criticism from the press, and Obama himself, from Feb 4th:
"New York State Senator Bill Perkins used quite explicit racial stereotyping in a speech aimed at discouraging his constituents from voting for Clinton by saying, Harlem "is not Bill Clinton's backyard or his plantation. Underscore, plantation."
Does Bill Clinton own slaves? Cuz I fail to see the connection between him and a plantation?
That's the most blatant racist comment that has been uttered, and this time it's REAL "racism" not trumped up lies from obama people.
OBAMA LOST ME THE MINUTE HE DID NOT STAND UP AND DECISIVELY SAY BILL AND HILLARY ARE NOT RACIST.
He left off at "...unfortunate comments."
Unfortunate racial politics! The lowest common denominator!
I can't believe people are falling for this crap; I thought we were smarter than that?
I was right about Bush, and I'm right about Obama.
Jake @ 25:
Show me a perfect candidate with impeccable credentials, track record, and character.
It doesn't exist. We're all human.
It would appear scarce that you have told an outright lie. He didn't deny saying what he said to WHHY. He denied the spin that was being put on it and referred people to his actual statement and the question he was asked. If this is the sort of unhelpful nonsense you choose to post then perhaps you should make yourself scarce.
Yeah, lets tear the democratic party down.
This website is beginning to SUCK.
Do you hear me?
LAConfidential@28 I won't sellout my vote to help "progressives" who play race games. If I didn't believe in myself I would just fall in line like you.
L.A. Confidential @ 22:
That is true.
The Republican push to elect Hillary in the primaries appears to be working.
If it's Hillary vs. McSame, then the Republicans will be motivated to get out and vote against her.
Sixteen years of indoctrination into the world of Clinton hate, on Extreme Right Radio, has done it's job.
As to forgiving them for lying all of the time, even out of desperation, I can't do. Hillary and McSame will lie to us in the White House, just as they are lying to us now.
And will Hillary really bring us a temporary respite from war? Bill never ended the bombing of Iraq, and we had Bosnia, Kosovo, bombing of aspirin factories in the Sudan, etc... Can we expect the same from her? As she keeps telling lies, I have no clue. Is she pandering and lying about being antiwar? Or is she being honest about that? How can we tell?
The corporate masters are smiling.
I don't hear a goddam thing.
Is your mic on ?
quint @ 36:
No.
This is what they call a "blog", where silence isn't tolerated.
Bill, you were a decent President; but, you had your chance. You promised us a healthcare system and you didn't deliver. Those of us that are underinsured or uninsured don't trust you. Those of us with huge medical bills; don't trust you. It's not that you aren't a likeable person; it's just that we know you aren't going to deliver what you promise. Using your wife as an end around to the two term limit is imaginative; but none-the-less, we wish you would go wonder off and do charity work like Jimmy Carter. That is where your place is now.
Thank you; now go away,
Read the memo.
President Clinton is President of your party and deserves respect.
They disrespect him and that is a huge mistake.
pissed off patricia @ 15:
I know...For a long time...Bill was my hero.... It does indeed hurt to see him playing so damn down and dirty...
If Obama is playing the race card it ain't working. Some say Bill is screwed up by introducing the race card. Critics fail to understand that Bill Clinton is the most masterful politician of our time. When Bill played the race card against Obama it was not a mistake; it was intentional. Bill made a brilliant strategic decision to knock Obama off his lofty messianic pedestal by baiting him into the gutter of negative attacks. Obama took the bait and fired back with negative rhetoric of his own. Obama ain't as good at the game of hardcore politics as the Clintons. Inevitably, Obama made public gaffes and faux pas. Obama's ill-advised remarks alienated working class whites and damaged him significantly in consecutive primaries. Hillary's strong comeback will cause chaos in the Democratic National Convention.
Left&Left @ 37:
The media cooked up this race thing. It hit the mainstream FRONT PAGE. Bill had to go on the defensive before they even got started early on and the public bought the media spin lock stock and barrel rather then LISTENING to Bill.
The Clintons are racists about as much as Obama intends to enslave the white race if he is Prez.
getalife @ 43:
Bow to your owners, or suffer the consequences...
I am not a Hillary supporter. However, I must say BC did a very good job on answering the suggestion that he played the "race card" in SC. It does seem that way too much was made of this.
Read the memo.

Bill's reputation is ruined, he played the Race Card.
I'm sorry, I can't tell anymore what the "race card" is. Is that when someone mentions that race exists?

Bow to your owners, or suffer the consequences…
It is their blog.
I know the gop and corporate media will attack but the Dems are stabbing him in the back again.
No respect, no loyalty, just arrogance, thinking they are better than him.
Not even close. Not even in the same league.
Americans are to addicted to sensationalism. Wouldn't a sane election process be refreshing?
Now who needs and promotes sensationalism most? Wouldn't be the MSM would it?
Bill is like an old boxer who doesn't know when to hang up the gloves. Bill just STFU, your wife spouts off more than enough.
L.A. Confidential @ 46:
I agree. It is reasonable to believe that the media would push hard for "race card" issues like this because they make good copy. Unfortunately it seems that both candidates' camps are getting sucked into it.
It is to be expected that there would be some ham-handed moments in the first presidential race to feature a viable African-American candidate. Frankly, it could be a lot worse.
L.A. Confidential @ 46:
Media spin? He's on video! Bill was asked if it took two Clintons to beat Obama. His response was that Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice. It was deliberate and calculated to paint Obama as nothing more than the black candidate.
Just because Clintons may not be racists doesn't mean they won't use racism. Hell, this campaign will threaten nuclear obliteration if they think it's to their advantage.
getalife @ 43:
I liked the PR version of the Clintons. Reality suggests demons in sheep's clothing. The landing strips in Mena suggest alternate sources of funding. They are hired guns for the big central banks that get rich loaning money to countries that go to war. Wealth is created through the issuance of debt.
I don't credit Obama for being that much different.
McCain is insane.
Please wake me when the selection is over.
NAFTA, STFU
miguel @ 9:
I don't understand either - but I think its called spin.
The almighty Barack Obama reminds me of Jimmy Carter and you know what type of fiasco he was for this country. Two left feet, both of them.
I'll vote for Hillary.
Dr. Acula @ 57:
Your sounding like a moonshine hillbilly Doc.
I have higher expectations of you.
"Hell, this campaign will threaten nuclear obliteration if they think it’s to their advantage."
Hillary actually did yesterdayl.
Bill’s reputation is ruined, he played the Race Card.
Yep, no surprise that he did so, white folx be doin it all the time. I know, being one myself.
For what it's worth, I blogged about how whites do this all the time (please excuse the blogwhoring, but it's better than typing it out here again):

Former President Clinton is by far the greatest President the Democratic Party has produced since FDR. A man of Bill's magnitude & significance commands deference and loyalty. I say let's make his wife our 44th President.
Why oh why can't MAHATMA GANDHI be one of our candidates instead of these three stooges!?!
robynwilliams@51 I'm not upset because Obama lost last night. This race is over...do the arithmetic. What does piss me off is how Hillary is playing into Caucasian parainoia....and indirectly accusing us black folk of voting for Obama because he is black, a suggestion that has no historic merit because we have always voted for white men.
Did anyone read the memo the obama campaign put out? Apparently not. maybe you should. It tells a lot.
You have to give the Clintons credit, they have taken lying to a fine art.
The Passionate Rusty Shackleford @ 58:
The bold is a KEY point. Yes both sides are allowing themselves to be controlled and manipulated by the Media.
Putting them in a situation to where they have to counter. It's almost no win because the media will drive voters insane with confusion and doubt.
It was Obama who played the race card after wrightgate.
The Obama's media attacked the President framing he played the race card and Obama supporters bought it.
It is total bs as usual.
It is very sad that Fox News called the election last night first, then Obama's MSNBC and last CNN called it for Clinton.
The spin after this victory is like a tornado hitting Obama's media.
The bias is sickening.
i tuned bill clinton out a long time ago.
he has turned into a SNL caricature of himself.
not only is he waaaaay overrated as a pres, he has turned into a complete embarrassment as hillary's campaigner-in-chief

SHUCK AND JIVE
Clinton Supporter Andrew Cuomo, Referring To Obama, Said "You Can't Shuck

Albany radio station: "It's not a TV-crazed race. Frankly, you can't buy

moves you can make with the press don't work when you're in someone's living

MARTIN LUTHER KING / LYNDON JOHNSON COMPARISON
Clinton, Criticizing Obama For Promising "False Hope" Said That While MLK
Jr. Spoke On Behalf Of Civil Rights, President Lyndon Johnson Was The One

rejoined the running argument over hope and "false hope" in an interview in
Dover this afternoon, reminding Fox's Major Garrett that while Martin Luther
King Jr. spoke on behalf of civil rights, President Lyndon Johnson was the
one who got the legislation passed. Hillary was asked about Obama's
rejoinder that there's something vaguely un-American about dismissing hopes
as false, and that it doesn't jibe with the careers of figures like John F.

DRUG USE
Clinton's NH Campaign Chair Raised The Youthful Drug Use Of Obama And Said
It Would "Open The Door To Further Queries On The Matter." Clinton's
Campaign Issued A Statement Distancing Themselves From Shaheen's Comments
And Shaheen Issued A Statement Saying That He "Deeply Regret[s] The
Comments." The Democratic presidential race took on a decidedly nasty and
personal turn, with the New Hampshire co-chair for Clinton, raising the
youthful drug use of Obama. Shaheen said Obama's having been so open -- as
opposed to then-Gov. George W. Bush, who refused to detail his past drug use
during his 2000 presidential campaign -- will "open the door to further
queries on the matter. It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give
drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'" Shaheen said. "There are so
many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It's hard to overcome." By the
end of the day, Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer had issued a

FAIRY TALE
Donna Brazile Lashed Into Bill Clinton For Comparing Obama To A "Fairy Tale"
And Said "It's An Insult... As An African-American" And That His Tone And

insulting comments of Obama, where he called him a "fairy tale" and said "I
could understand his frustration at this moment. But, look, he shouldn't
take out all his pain on Barack Obama. It's time that they regroup. Figure
out what Hillary needs to do to get her campaign back on track. It sounds
like sour grapes coming from the former commander in chief. Someone that
many Democrats hold in high esteem. For him to go after Obama, using a fairy
tale, calling him as he did last week. It's an insult. And I will tell you,
as an African-American, I find his tone and his words to be very depressing.
... I think his tone, I think calling Barack Obama a kid, he is a United
States senator." [Politico, 1/8/08]
The Obama campaign in public says they don't do this sort of thing. Apparently they do..
I know what I saw and heard Bill Clinton say. It is indefensible, and inexcusable, I am a lifelong democrat who will not vote for Hillary if she is the presidential nomination. For her to vote for the war, and endorse this behavior against a fellow democrat?
It looks like I am not a blue-dog democrat anymore. Good thing Obama has the nomination in the bag.
biff diggerence @ 64:
Do I have to embarrass you by posting things Obama has said about what enemies could expect under his Presidency if they fu*k with the USA or our allies?
Get to know who your supporting before you spout off. It makes you look ignorant.
A few weeks ago, I was told by (I believe) Mr. Amato through an email, that Crooks & Liars would not post any NEGATIVE stories involving Democrats. Am I to believe now that the curtain has been pulled back and the true colors of Crooks & Liars is finally being seen?
After a decisive victory in Pennsylvania, Senator Clinton has proven once again that she has the ability to fight on while Senator Obama has proven not to be able to take the heat. I am guessing that Crooks & Liars is attempting to deflect that heat from Senator Obama by attacking former President Clinton. Its shame. A damn shame that Crooks & Liars has come to this.
I supposed that this rant will be edited or censored by Crooks & Liars because it calls them out for what they have been for quite some time: Senator Obama supporters.
[We'll get you a wahhhhhhmbulance. We're also being called 'Senator Clinton supporters.' And both would be wrong. I know that won't stop people like you from spreading falsehoods-Sitemonitor]
Which terrorists support which Democrat?
Handy guide for those confused by it all.
There is a cartoon that has been around for awhile. It shows a knife in Bill Clinton's back and the knife says "Democrats"
The dems will seeimingly find a way to lose this next election. Obama supporters used race against Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton. Now the Obama supporters (not necessarily Obama, although he did nothing to stop it) have effectively used the race card enough to anger whites that were on the fence.
Hillary would win against McCain by just showing up. She did not anger the demographics that are necessary to win a general election.
But Obama? I am not so sure. I fear he cannot win the swing states now. Too late. You Obama supporters really stabbed all of us in the back by using the race card against Bill Clinton. I hope I'm wrong, but that would go down in history as the most incompetent strategy ever.
Seriously, the Repubs are so unpopular, we could run Mickey Mouse against McCain and win. But now . . . whiteys don't forget this stuff.
biff diggerence @ 64:
Hillary has no more intention of obliterating Iran than Miley Cyrus. Hillary carefully worded her remarks which stated that in the event Iran followed through with their threat to wipe Israel off the map, she would authorize the obliteration of Iran. Hillary is fully aware that neither scenario is likely to happen. Iran will never launch a nuclear attack on Israel and the US will not obliterate Iran. Hillary's sabre-rattling rhetoric was meant to toss red meat to the rich Jews of New York in order to generate their money for her campaign. Nothing more than that.
I'm so sick of this bickering in the democratic party, and I'm sorry, but the continuing divisive campaign Hillary is running is largely responsible for it.
Obama's speech last night was all anti-John McCain, he did nothing but congratulate Hillary.
Hillary's speech was mostly anti-Obama. How does that help the national campaign in any way?
So much is being made about her victory in PA, when she was always expected to win there and had done nothing but lose ground up until the election. I just don't get how that counts as "momentum".
From the Huffington Post link:
[[The memo, which was obtained by the Huffington Post and has been made public elsewhere, is believed to have been given to an activist and contains mostly excerpts from different media reports. It lists the contact info and name of Obama's South Carolina press secretary, Amaya Smith, and is broken down into five incidents in which either Clinton, her husband Bill, or campaign surrogates made comments that COULD BE INTERPRETED AS RACIALLY INSENSITIVE.
The document provides an indication that, in private, the Obama campaign is seeking to capitalize on the VIEW - AND PUSH THE NARRATIVE - that the Clintons are using race-related issues for political leverage. In public, the Obama campaign has denied that they are trying to propagate such a perception, noting that the document never was sent to the press.]]
That is a perfect description of SPIN. Bill Clinton is right. The memos show that the Obama Campaign sought to make something out of nothing to suggest that the Clinton Campaign is playing the Race Card.
Now, if Bill Clinton or anyone else in the Clinton Campaign had ever said something like, "First of all, I think that Obama's support from White Americans is not going to hold. I'm completely confident that White America will wake up, and get it", as Michelle Obama said about Black American support for Hillary Clinton WAAAAAYYYY back in early November on a nationally televised MSNBC interview...then THAT would be playing the Race Card, BIGTIME, and the Obama whiners might have a point.
But nobody in the Clinton Campaign ever said anything like the BIGTIME Race Card Michelle Obama first played WAAAAAAYYYYY back in November, so they don't have a point.
