This is a great idea. It appears that the Republican nominee for the presidency---John McImpotent, can do nothing to pull the racist attack ads against Obama in NC:

"The television advertisement you are planning to air degrades our civics and distracts us from the very real differences we have with the Democrats," he wrote. "In the strongest terms, I implore you to not run this advertisement."

As usual the press will praise him for standing up to their Rovian tactics while nothing is done to stop them. So it's up to Liddy Dole to get these pulled. Jane writes:

Who's the most senior member of the NC GOP? Well that would be Liddy Dole. NC Democratic Party Chair Jerry Meek has sent a letter to Dole saying "without a doubt, you could halt this ad with a simple telephone call." Dole is up for re-election this year (and will be running against either Kay Hagen or Blue America candidate Jim Neal).

She can stop the racist attack ads against Obama, and we're asking her to send this letter:

Dear Chairwoman Linda Daves,

I disapprove of the content of the North Carolina Republican Party's recent advertisement "Extreme". I feel that it resorts to a type of negative politicking that betrays the best interest of North Carolinians.

I call on you, as Chairwoman of the North Carolina Republican Party, to immediately stop airing this advertisement. Failure to do so will reflect negatively on all North Carolina Republicans, and would necessitate that I return the Party's contributions to my campaign to disassociate myself from the vitriol which you appear to embrace.

We'll be working with NC bloggers (including Pam Spaulding) to deliver the petition to Dole's office. You can cosign here.

Yes, it's an excellent idea and I'm very happy to be supporting Jim Neal in NC along with the rest of my Blue America colleagues. (Crooks & Liars, Firedoglake, Digby, Down With Tyranny )

If you can throw a few bucks his way while you're at it---that would be very cool. But please cosign if you have the chance.

Appealing to the Republicans better nature; how could it not work. :)

Haven't been to NC since the early 80's but remember seeing two towns with signs saying "Proud Home of the KKK" so I don't know how poorly the ad will reflect on the state. Not saying everyone in the state is that way obviously, but can't imagine it's radically different from the place I experienced back then. More likely the ads will be targeted to the places it will inspire racists to get out the vote.

That said, I'll happily be contributing a few bucks to get the Repubs out of office in the upcoming race. Thanks for the link!

The last time I saw Elizabeth Dole on tv she acted like she had lost her mind. I can't remember what show it was but I believe it was one of the Sunday shows. She was talking and ranting and making no sense whatsoever. I'll sign the letter in a little while but I have scant hope it will make a difference.

I was in passing through that state just a couple of years before you were and I saw that sign too. We, my husband at that time and I, stopped at a place to eat lunch. My husband's hair wasn't really long but it was long. I had my hair in braids. The other people in the restaurant kept giving us such dirty looks that we didn't finish our meal. We left ample money on the table to cover our tab and got the hell out of there. I have never felt like that in a public place before or since.

I hope things are better in NC these many years later.

Asking the Repubs to stop being racists? That would be political genocide to their party. Come on, the modern Republican party was founded on racism after 1964.

Elizabeth Dole is such a dusty old cracker.

I say keep harping on Wright. This country has a very short attention span. Keep it up and it all just starts pissing people off.

I wonder what Bob's dosage is up to now?

I say let em keep running them. The GOP needs to be memorialized as, among other things, the bigot party.

So, if St. Maverick can't get the North Carolina Republican Party to listen to him, why am I supposed to think that he will be able to "sit the Shiites and the Sunnis down and tell them to stop the bullshit"?

Angry, bigoted old woman is just hostile because ole Bobby doesn't come home until his four hour erection is finished.

A day or so ago the woman who is in that ad was being interviewed via remote by a woman on MSNBC. The woman at MSNBC asked the woman if the ad was intended against Dems running in NC, why did it feature Obama. The lady tried some feeble reason but the MSNBC woman pushed her again and said why not use some material in the ad that addresses the Dems running and not that attacks Obama. The woman looked real blank, cut her eyes to her left and the screen went to green. The woman at MSNBC said they had lost their feed and then she added, "at a very convenient time".

It was very apparent that the lady in the ad was not prepared to talk about realities and did not expect to be penned down with a hard question.

Anyone watching that ad knows exactly what it's about. They can try to make up all sorts of reasons they are running it, but they can't cover up what it is.

WTF? What a jack*ss post! What does Elizabeth have to do with this, and while we're on the topic, how isn't it racist that 90% of african americans vote for Obama, yet Obamaheads like yourself never seem to care about that - and call Bill racist for pointing this out?

She had the talking point the Administration (orders from head quarters) wanted her to say. When she realized she was going to be challenged on the talking point she was given, but had no examples to back it up she went into attack/stall mode to run out the clock.

She is a tool.

A similar situation occurred with my then wife and I on a vacation in Florida in the early 90s. We went out for authentic local cuisine, and all we got were dirty looks from everyone around us...I'm sorry to say this...but basically we were surrounded by rednecks. The waitress herself was uneasy, but she served us quickly, never making mention of it but her discomfort with her "other" customers was palpable. We ate, calmly, got our check quickly and left without incident.

I think the difference here is that voters choose whom they are going to vote for because its their choice to do so.  If they happen to like Obama because he has the same skin tone as they do or if they like Clinton because she happens to be the same gender well that is their choice.  I do not happen to agree with that method of picking a candidate but as I have said, its their choice.  This ad however, will be backed by the NC GOP and broadcast to a wide scope of people and is racially motivated.  Even McCain can see that and that is why Liddy Dole needs to be involved.  She is the most senior member of the NC GOP.

I THINK it was in NC just 2 years ago -- I was driving down to FL and stopped for breakfast at a Waffle House. I sat at the counter for what felt like an eternity and was completely ignored! That had never happened before and hasn't since. Truly bizarre. And discomforting.

Most African Americans(like myself) were totally in Hillary's camp until South Carolina...period. Now I understand that arrogant idiots like yourself(and the Clinton's) keep conveniently ignoring this absolute fact, but it's true. We were for Hillary, not because she was the best choice, but because we knew this nation is filled with jerks like you and we were willing to vote against the "best" candidate just to ensure a Republican defeat. Hillary fucked up with the black by opening her big dumb mouth and pissing off black voters. And one more thing...I think Obama the best candidate that the Democratic party has had in years and that is why I am voting for him! You racist think everyone is just as racist as you are. Historically black voters have always voted overwhelmingly for white male candidates, even with black people as one of their choices. Besides bigotry and paranoia, your argument is like a fart in the wind.

I would say that it goes further than that. This ad appears to be intentionally racial in content. If it caught any sort of response from McCain (as it did) it must be pretty intense or else he would pay no mind to it. I think McCain knows that this could hurt him just as much as anyone else especially in other states.

I just caught a clip of it on CNN but apparently today Obama gave a press conference and drew a deep line in the sand between himself and Rev Wright. From what I got to hear, he sounded disappointed about some of the more unusual things Wright has and is saying. I think below the surface Obama is angry and frustrated with the minister and he's tired of all the bs too.

Let the Republicans run these ads. These ads perfectly represent the core values of the Repubicans: A party that is more concerned about POWER than any other thing regardless of how low they have to stoop. The Democrats should just run ads pointing out how Horrible these ads are and labeling the Republican Party as the Racist Party. Let the Pigs cook themselves.

If blacks are voting for Obama soley because he is black then this is racist. BUT, if they are voting for Obama because they believe he will represent their interests better than any other candidate then it is not racist. Show me some proof that they are voting based on race and race alone and I will agree with you. Bring it on. Every race is capable of racism and it is wrong in every case. "And don't even think about asking us why we cheer on the DNC's new 100 Years of War ad that shows American service men getting blown to bits."

back when he had actual journalism in this country, americans saw their soldiers get blown to bits every night during vietnam. it's called the reality of war, and if we hadn't let the right wing fool us into thinking war was all foo foo bunnyrabbits and sunshine five years ago, we probably could have avoided this whole iraq fiasco in the first place.

yeah, the crusty cracker stuff is probably a bit off, but this is an internet message board, not a paid advertisement. there's a pretty obvious difference, and i think just about any internet message board you find is gonna have a fair amount of lowest-common denominator stuff, right, left, or center.

but you gotta understand, just about everyone is pretty pissed off at the right wing these days. they've literally screwed up every last thing they've attempted since the republicans forced bush on the country eight years ago. their string of failures is simply too long to list. so you'll have to pardon us if we fly off the handle with the language sometimes. the republicans completely ruining america has been kinda tough to watch.

Help convince the stupid people where they should vote.

Let them spend their money pandering to the bigots. They're all going to vote for McCain anyway. It might just help get the non-bigot vote out too.

It also seems that discussion on racism has gone in a strange direction lately. If you point out racism, you are judged as being racist yourself (reverse racist?). This makes it hard to make objective criticism. It's subtle, but it helps muddy the water and deter discussion. A case in point would be Rev. Wrights sermons, maybe Bill Clinton's comments too.

Rev. Wright's stubborn ego put Obama in this horrible position and left the Senator with no other choice but to disassociate himself from the reverend.

you know, i kept trying to like wright but when he wouldn't disassociate himself from farrakhan and he's saying things like, oh, obama's just distancing himself from me because he's a politician -- it's like wright's deliberately trying to sabotage obama. it's very strange.

Have to agree, Mike. That spectacle yesterday turned me off of him. He was acting too much like an entertainer instead of a preacher.

Doesn't Elizabeth Dole have some more Red Cross finances to screw up ?

So he disowned the man he could no sooner disown than if he disowned the entire black community?

Where did Obama say the word "disown". If you skip your meds again Dennis, I'm calling your probation officer. You Repubs got nothing except issueless, trivial sniping. Don't take the ass whipping in the fall personal. Obama '08

No. She sucked all the blood she could out of that carcass.

She covered her tracks and ran away before they dug too deep.

Be honest for once Dennis, no matter what Obama would have done you would troll here with constantly pointless pathetic negativity.

Racism is the only potent weapon the Republicans have in this election. Substantively, McCain is a nothing - no ideas, no principles, no solutions. He's a pathetic candidate. But he's a white man with a traditionally presidential-sounding name, and America is an astoundingly racist country. That's why the Republicans will be appealing to white fear throughout this election - as they are doing with this ad.

Was at a Jim Neal event in Chapel Hill this past Sunday... he had me at hello.

He has my primary vote and support for stepping up to the plate so Dole would not run unopposed (and for standing up to "Bull dog" Carville).

His speech came straight from the heart. He tried to stand by his friend and minister but Rev Wright wouldn't leave it alone. He allowed his ego to damage Obama and I think at this point Obama was hurt and angry. He said as much today. This decision did not come easily for Obama. But Rev Wright and his actions yesterday during the Q&A part at the Press Club were, in Obama's words, " a caricature of himself".

Wow, that bitch just doesn't shut up! She needs to be voted out of office, immediately.

Trivial sniping? Right, L&L.

Suddenly on this blog everyone's had a complete transformation. It really wasn't all that long ago that Bush's relationship with the religious right was a major topic of discussion and a huge concern for all of America. Now any questions about Obama's 20 year relationship with his nuttier than fruitcake and radical pastor is trivial sniping and beyond reasonable curiosity.

Obama has publicly disavowed his pastor's statements.

Perhaps you can direct us to where Bush publicly disavowed anything from the Religious Right.

Where can i actually see this ad?

Rusty- Fair enough. Obama is doing this, though, because he's been forced to.

How about you show me where Bush's closest pastor announced to the world that he was coming after him when he (Bush) took office.

It's Obama's scalp they want. That's the real prize. This is a turf war. The big-wigs are defending their fiefdom from interlopers. They're even rolling out the heavy artillery expecting a full-blown conflagration. The election season is shaping up to be a real donnybrook. Better buckle up. Obama has entered the crosshairs of America's criminal oligarchy and things are bound to get nasty.

ronald @ 66:

Barack Obama, born in Hawaii, who only a few months ago was accused of not being black enough is now, in the eyes of many Americans, a bedfellow of Farrakhan, the Reverand Jeremiah Wright and the black liberation movement. Talk about chickens coming home to roost.

Obama, who somewhere along the way decided to ride the coat tails of the African-American experience, something his DNA has no connection to whatsoever, is now reaping the flip side of that experience. Obama, raised by a white woman from Kansas, a distant relative of Dick Cheney, thought that by mimicking Martin Luther King’s speaking style, he could garner nearly 100% of the African-American Democratic primary vote and displace Bill as the first black president.

What Barack failed to take into account is that there’s a reason why there’s never before been a genuinely African-American president and that is because we enslaved, raped and lynched them over a period of four hundred years and there remains some lingering resentment and animosity.

Amazing...the most ridiculous, bizarre, factless, load of B.S. that I have ever read at C&L. Aahahahahahahahaha!!! Obama '08

So... what? You're worried that the Secret Service won't be able to protect Obama?

I still don't see what that has to do with Bush/McCain's kowtowing to the Religious Right extremists, like Hagee, who blamed Katrina on homosexuals, or Robertson/Falwell, who said Americans brought 9/11 on themselves.

Elizabeth Dole will do nothing to affect the current elections

When she's so happy and relieved her husband's on Viagra.

No, Rusty. Not 'coming after him' as in an act of violence, 'coming after him' as in his influence.

Words fail as to how all of a sudden that is of no concern to people here. You've been around for a while here. Look on the left border of this page- 385 threads on religion and the Religious Right. Not one yet on Rev. Wright and his relationship to Obama.

I like it! Just stand back, and let them have the spotlight.

I personally don't care about anyone's association with the religious right. They are all a bunch of batshit crazy people IMO.

Judging people based on what someone else said is crap. I'm not judging McCranky on his connections and sought after endorsement from Hagee any more than I am judging Obama on his association with Wright.

But it's the republican way! Don't offer anything of substance to fix the problems YOU (republican's) have created, just attack others for having the audacity to point them out.

Has John McCain renounced and denounce the Indiana GOP House Representative nominee who attended a birthday party for HITLER? http://www.nwitimes.com/articles/2008/04/23/news/top_news/docf6a35b9d5a7...

Will you all follow me in sending a cascade of blue pills McSame-ward? I think it might tick him off a bit. I kinda admit I wouldn't mind having a beer with him. And I do like BBQ. But with Barack I would share the good stuff. Wine, or single-malt Scotch, mind you, not the Dutch Cleanser.

Can someone tell me why this ad is racist? Try and swallow the "well, it's so obvious, if I have to explain it, you won't get it" response and really answer the question.

I think it's a bad ad, but for other reasons-- it does a really lame job of if a=b and b=c then a=c. It's a stretch because it plays 7 Degrees of Separation with Wright, Obama and the NC politicians.

But I don't get the racism angle. Is ithe word "extreme?"
