Lurita Doan, head of the General Services Administration, was forced to offer her resignation tonight, according to an e-mail she sent out this evening.
Doan was appointed in late May, 2006, becoming the first woman to serve as GSA Administrator. With 12,000 empioyees and a $20 billion annual budget, GSA has responsibilty for overseeing the thousands of building and properties owned by the federal government.
Doan became the subject of congressional scrutiny last year for allegedly using GSA to help Republican lawmakers win re-election. Doan denied the allegation, but her appearance before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee was disastrous. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the panel, called on Doan to resign over the allegations, but Doan refused to do so. Read on…
Doan was forced to go kicking and screaming, like most Bushies do. The corruption became so ingrained into the fabric of the Bush administration to the point where, I believe, these people actually didn’t think they were doing anything wrong, or they just didn’t care because everyone was getting in on the act. Ah, I remember the hearing and the way the woman acted. I wouldn’t allow her to clean my cat’s litter box. She came across as a total fruit cake. I agree with Marc, better late than never, but she should have never had the position in the first place.

Just imagine that all of these scandals happened in a Clinton administration, and that the Republicans had control of Congress. The Republican led hearings would be going 24/7, 365 days a year, and not a stone left unturned.
Not so with the Democrats in charge. It’s been a free pass for this President. IMO, the Congressional Democrats have been the biggest disappointment. Maybe it’s time to clean house there too!

She has a masters degree in Reinassance Literature. This qualifies her to teach a literature class at a community college.
Her husband gave hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to the Republican Party.
This is a classic example of hooking up someone’s wife with a job.
I could totally understand her working as some doctor’s secretary; but, to put some like this in charge of the GSA…all I can say is wow…this blows my mind.
It just goes to show how the Republicans think that the government is all about the war; but, the rest of the government is just some stupid thing that doesn’t matter.

I agree 1000%. The Democrats have proven to be feckless. What a bunch of saps. Having these disqualified repugs resign in disgrace is not enough. Gonzalez perjured himself in Congress. He should be imppeached. Doan violated the Hatch act. She should be prosecuted as well. I’m so disgusted with the Democrats’ lack of real oversight I can barely see straight.

I think that saving this sort of action for an election year is much more effective. It would have been ancient history by now if they’d forced the issue last year. I hope there are many more similar examples to come. There’s nothing like a nice fresh outrage.

Forced out? One year after one is called on the carpet for these illegalities in not being forced out. Something else happened and now she is leaving. They may point at this hearing as the reason, but she weathered the storm a whole freakin year. I think something else happened and the old allegations are held up as the reason…nobody ever pays for anything in this administration. EVER.
