Before there was rock’n'roll– just before– there were The Platters. And before the Doors, Love, X or Black Flag came along, The Platetrs were the L.A. Sound. The band had a string of worldwide smashes– “Only You,” “The Great Pretender,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “My Prayer,” “Twilight Time,” “Harbor Lights,” and… “The Magic Touch” from the mid-50’s into the mid-60’s. The song popped into my head yesterday when I heard the GOP was sending Vice President Dick Cheney to northern Mississippi to use his magic touch in today’s congressional race down there.

Howie–
I do believe that the Platters have to be considered rock & roll because “Doo-Wop” is a wholly owned subsidiary…and because I LOVE the ‘em to pieces. The music of the 50’s was disparate and wonderfully varied including the blues-influenced Chuck Berry, the gospel-influenced Little Richard, the country-influenced Buddy Holly and the smooth urban R & B–the aforementioned doo-wop–of the Platters, the Drifters, the Moonglows, et magnificent cetera.
Thanks for this…

Thank Lieber and Stoller for so many of their hits. I grew up with this stuff. I actually used to think I was cool. If I had a voice, I could sing this stuff for hours. Who would dream that you could put their entire career on one little CD (as MP3’s)?
The Ink Spots — You’re Feet’s Too Big
The Platters were direct, if more serious, descendants of the immortal Ink Spots.
Herb Reed, the original bass vocalist of The Platters, is still out there touring and working the cruise ship circuit after all these years. He’s really the only one with the true right to use the name: http://www.herbreedandtheplatters.com
