McCain ‘kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross’

There’s been talk for years that many Bush supporters believe he was literally chosen by God to be president. We don’t hear as much about this lately — God wanted a U.S. president who would screw up everything he touches? — but the notion of divine intervention on behalf of Republicans has been a relatively common sentiment in far-right circles for quite a while.

That said, direct comparisons between Republican candidates and Jesus are still rather unusual. (via mcjoan)

Georgia Republican Party chairwoman Sue Everhart said Saturday that the party’s presumed presidential nominee has a lot in common with Jesus Christ.

“John McCain is kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross,” Everhart said as she began the second day of the state GOP convention. “He never denounced God, either.”

Everhart was praising McCain for never denouncing the United States while he was being tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

“I’m not trying to compare John McCain to Jesus Christ, I’m looking at the pain that was there,” she said.

Right, of course. She’s not “trying to compare” McCain to Jesus, she’s just says he’s “kind of like Jesus.” The distinction is obvious. And sacrilegious.

Atrios added, “I’m not Christian so it doesn’t really matter much to me who is casually compared to their Lord And Savior, but still.”

I just learned that Hamilton Jordon has passed away, a person from Georgia that knew what quality in a person was and what can be done in America. Does not this passing make us think of what could have been.

The only thing Mc Cain and Jesus Christ have in common is that they are both about 2,000 years old- that is where the resemblance ends!

Charlie Says:

“McCain never denounced America when he was held captive”.

An absolute LIE.
McCain admitted (after being tortured) that he bombed innocent civilians in North Vietnam and that he had been ordered to do so.

That is the truth of what happened. It makes McCain’s support now for torturing prisoners held by the U.S. even more egregious.

I’m not sure about this, but I believe McCain did actually sign a statement denouncing the U.S. war effort while in captivity. Obviously if he did it was done under duress and should by no means be used against him, but it would detract somewhat from his being “like Jesus.” I thought Tom DeLay had the “just like Jesus Christ” franchise all sewn up anyway.

Exit polling from Kentucky shows that white Americans would rather vote for mccain that vote for a black man. While I respect their right to chose Clinton over Obama, the fact that so many polled admit that they could not let themselves vote on a race issue is just deplorable.

Shame on Kentucky, you bring America down and are shooting yourselves in the foot.

Jesus was supposedly tortured and hung on a cross for a total of about 56 hours.

That is nothing compared to what the men who have been held in POW camps went through. Many of whom didn’t live to tell the tale. Whether you do or do not like John McCain don’t deny the Pow’s their rightful place.
McCain is a frickin Idiot but he held up to more than this savior character did. That guy caved in less than 3 days. McaCain and many others put up with it for years. And they did it first for this nation for you and I. Maybe their mission was wrong and wrong headed but they percervered.

I’ll put my faith in my fellow men and women and our unified mind at preserving freedom. Not some sheep herder. Nor some fat head politician.

Curious isn’t it that they would offer to send him home early precisely because he was the son and grandson of admirals. More likely the treatment he received was kid glove compared to what others got. Have you ever wondered how they even found out about his family connections? A telegram from the State Department perhaps or maybe he just told them? I wonder how that happened?

Do a little research and you’ll find when McCain was a POW he cracked and gave up info, etc.
This is most likely why he has worked so hard to squash all access to info about ALL POWs,
much to the distress of the families of other ones.

But, when they time to swiftboat him arrives, I expect most all of it will see the light of day.

he screwed up the bombing run, then screwed up his ejection so the vietnamese probably assumed that this incompetent pilot had to be connected to someone with pull. they knew who he was within 1 week.

I don’t like McCain, I’m not even convinced he’s competent… but the writing on this site is as hilariously bad as the news it tries to satire. Ok, not AS bad, but it’s pretty fucking bad. The quote that said it wasn’t a comparison was even posted, and he just goes “Oh yeah?! you aren’t COMPARING, well I think you ARE!”.

The comparison is as dumb as the fact it is being made out to be this direct comparison.

McCain’s ‘97 Lobbyist Bill Would Cripple Current Campaign
May 20, 2008 02:45 PM

Senator John McCain has a lobbyist problem. This past week, as several aides resigned because of their work representing unsavory governments, his campaign implemented a new policy governing these potential conflicts of interest. That led to the departure of additional staffers, including former Rep. Thomas Loeffler, a key adviser and fundraiser.

The McCain camp has insisted that the resignations are nothing more than evidence of the Senator’s sincerity in combating outside influences. But the truth, reform groups say, is far from adulatory: McCain’s current policy simply doesn’t compare to the ethical commitments he championed earlier in his career.

Just twelve years ago, when McCain was politically recuperating from his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, he introduced legislation that would, if implemented today, cripple his presidential campaign.
