BREAKING: Rove Subpoenaed by House Judiciary Committee

  The Gavel

From the Judiciary Committee:

Conyers Subpoenas Karl Rove

(Washington, DC)- Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) issued a subpoena to former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove for testimony about the politicization of the Department of Justice (DOJ), including former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman’s case. Yesterday, Rove’s attorney, Robert Luskin, sent a letter to the Committee expressing that Rove would not agree to testify voluntarily, per the Committee’s previous requests.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Rove has failed to cooperate with our requests,” Conyers said. “Although he does not seem the least bit hesitant to discuss these very issues weekly on cable television and in the print news media, Mr. Rove and his attorney have apparently concluded that a public hearing room would not be appropriate. Unfortunately, I have no choice today but to compel his testimony on these very important matters.”

Separately, Chairman Conyers recently received a letter from DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) indicating that the office has opened an investigation into allegations of selective prosecution of Siegelman and others.

He shouldn’t be able to claim executive privilege for this one. If he doesn’t show, send the powers that be to throw him in that jail in the basement.

10
Lollimom Says:

C&L should Photoshop all but his middle finger out of that pic above, because that’s what The Big Turd is going to do with the subpoena.

11
Ryan in IL Says:

Conyers is a great American. What ever happened to the court filing against the others who cited executive privilege for not appearing? It seems there should be a more expeditious way…

Good news all the same. Giggidy.

Who are the OPR? Is this another attempt to dilute the effect of the real hearings by setting up fake ones, like they did with Bloch?

Now that we know Rove intends to NOT show…
And that Mukasey is the announced Protectorate of the president, refusing to enforce subpoenas by the House Judiciary…

The Full House can now vote for INHERENT CONTEMPT charges!
… but will they agree…?

True, but maybe the most important thing is that it will cost him a ton of legal fees and maybe break him financially. Don’t think that any legal defense fund raising will go on for him since he no longer has an official place in the administration.

Rove likes to talk alot about the truth but not when he’s under oath. Hmm, now I wonder why that is . . . ?

He’ll ignore it, claim executive privilege, and then it will go to the DOJ where any action will be stonewalled until jan-09. The Dems in the meantime will just bend over and take it in the ass.

Bill Clinton let the Bush and Reagan administrations off the hook when he took office as a sign of good faith to the repugs. We see where that got him.

32
Tekras Says:

In a word … so? Isn’t he the 3rd person from this administration to be subpoenaed and the Justice Dept. just ignores it? There are only 2 remedies for the crimes of this group of thugs 1) Inherent Contempt of Congress and have the capitol police go out and arrest Rove next time he’s in D.C. or 2) IMPEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone else has ignored the subpoenas. What makes everyone so giddy about this one? I bet Karl’s already had it framed and hung it above his desk.

Okay, so I’m still pretty friggin’ skeptical as to what ACTUALLY will happen. I still see it as a chance for these people to save their jobs right before election time, after doing nothing for so long. I mean, if he really will slam down his foot and have the bastard frog-marched in, more power to him! But then again, why wait so long for all of this to happen, while innocent people have been dying/living thru torture? If he had reason to subpoena Rove a while ago, why didn’t he do so? He could have ignored the subpoena and we could have had him thrown in the basement months ago.

Then again, I’m not going to be bitchin’ (too loudly) if it gets done, one way or the other… ;P

35
Paul Says:

Conyers better have Rove’s pudgy ass stracked to a lie detector while he is being questioned. Better, conduct a parallel investigation by other means so that when Rove perjurs himself, he can be prosecuted..after Bush leaves office and goes into exile in Paraguay.

Beware the Red State Menace
The Declaration of Independence says “Nature’s god” once and “their creator” once.
The Constitution has no mention of either. In particular no “so help me god” in the president’s oath of office. If I tacked on “so help me Loki” or “so help me Fred, my daughter” or “so help me, me” would it still count?
Hardly grounds for defining us as a christian nation.

42
Chico Hussein Says:

Rove and the WH expected this all along. This will drag on and on for who knows how long.

We’ll see Bush impeached before we see The Human Turd answers any questions UNDER OATH.

43
President PNACcio Says:

It will be interesting to see how Rove’s newfound media employers at Newsweek, Fox News, and The Wall Street Journal handle this development.

It will also be worth noting how Beltway opinion-makers in the press, who in recent weeks have been praising Rove for his second act as a full-time pundit, deal with Rove being arrested. This time, I think they just might do it.

Exactly. This isn’t the pony we’ve been hoping for.

Herb Says:

Expect a cascade of motions and appeals. Anything to drag it out past the November elections to keep another possible scandal from hurting McCain by association.

Even if he does appear, this man who can cite specifics about congressional elections in the 1890s will break Alberto Gonzales’s Olympic record of number of “I don’t recall” claims per hour.

The one thing in the past eight years that Bush has gotten right was to bestow the name “Turdblossom” on Rove.

To paraphrase Clarence Darrow, I would never wish any man dead, but I would read that word on his tombstone with great pleasure.

If he shows up he’ll probably take the fifth on every question, but hey, I’ll take what little pleasure I can get right now. So, the drinks are on me.

yeh. :( But who knows, maybe it just took that long to go swimming through all the e-mails/archives/phone records to find the nut-clinching evidence against the whole administration, and it had to be Rove, or the whole investigation would lead nowhere..? Maybe they didn’t give a flying f*ck about Miers et all, because it would spoil the surprise they have for Rove, Cheney, and Bush. That would make me supremely happy, but I’m not going to hold my breath for it.

52
jim Says:

DOJ would look like shit if they pass on this one - it’s not 2005 anymore - the heat is on.
All the more so with a new Administration waiting in the wings.

Here’s hoping he DOES ignore it - hell yeah: open-&-shut charge of criminal contempt.
Also a possible additional conspiracy &/or aiding & abetting charge.
Pity he can’t be nailed on RICO too … or should I say not YET.

Don’t let Conyers push ya around, Turd Blossom … c’mon, show everyone what a big man you are!

Orange overalls: the GOP chic fashion-statement for 2009.

53
Chico Hussein Says:

After some “negotiations” , he will testify but ..

Not under oath,

With Dick Cheney holding his hand,
For 10 mins only and not a second more.

I hope it drags on through November. I don’t know the legal ins and outs, but I imagine a world where bushco’s dirty laundry is aired through election season, and Rove is hung out to dry with nobody to pardon his fat ass.

We need to be careful we are not falling for another one of Rove’s tricks!!!!

Remember when every breaking republican scandal always brought out the concern trolls to tell us that, by spreading the news, we were somehow falling for a Rove trick of some sort.

Throw him in Guantanamo.
