McCain takes the lead — by not showing up for work

When John McCain is asked how he’s substantively different from George W. Bush, the senator has a programmed response he repeats without hesitation. At the top of the list: “climate change.”

Indeed, McCain, at least recently, has made his “green” credentials a key part of this early stage of his campaign. Two weeks ago, he traveled quite a bit to talk up his plan to combat global warming. “I’m proud of my record on the environment,” McCain told reporters. “As president, I will dedicate myself to addressing the issue of climate change globally.”

There are more than a few problems with McCain’s boasts. For one thing, McCain’s environmental positions shift all the time, and some of his policy opinions contradict each other. For another, McCain has a nasty habit of promoting environmental policies he’s already voted against.

Nevertheless, McCain wants voters to consider him someone who’ll work hard to address global warming if he’s in the White House. In the meantime, though, he’s not willing to work hard at all to address global warming while he’s in the Senate.

While Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has made action on climate change a central theme in his campaign, he won’t be on hand to vote next week when the Senate considers a landmark bill imposing mandatory limits on greenhouse gases.

In a press conference late Wednesday afternoon, McCain said he did not support the bill sponsored by two of his closest allies, Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John Warner (R-Va.) because it doesn’t offer enough aid to the nuclear industry, and he would not come to the floor to vote on it.

“I have not been there for a number of votes. The same thing happened in the campaign of 2000,” he said. “The people of Arizona understand I’m running for president.”

That’s probably true. But the people of the country also understand that he’s promising to be a “leader” on one of the nation’s most pressing issues. And I’ll give McCain a tip: leaders show up for work once in a while.

Can you port that image over to Cafe Press or a similar scalable printer? It would make a fine bumpersticker…

Leaders also clear brush while working the least amount of a two term president ever.

Not good leaders, mind you.

LOL, McCain can’t even keep up with what he endorses and what he doesn’t like. What a joke, McCain was clearly cut off the same block of clay as his partner in crime Dictator Bush. Is anyone really, I mean honestly taking him seriously? Can you imagine another 4 years of Bush? god help us all.

They roasted John Kerry over the coals for statements like this. How does an idiot like McCain get away with it? 0.o

Another thing I find sad about all this, is that even if the global warming deniers were right (they’re not, of course), there’s still peak oil, the Holocene Extinction Event, at least one asteroid that could hit this century, if not two, water wars looming on the horizon, and the First World suffering from budget problems that should be crippling the US and Europe eventually.

We are so screwed…

the same shitheads who spent the last three days absolving themselves and forgiving themselves after the Scott McClellan revelations are the same people who publicize the greatness of mcBullshit.

So…

How dumb does that make the MSM, then?

Supporting one of the worst candidates for Prez in US history has to be up there with starting the Spanish-American War in terms of badness…

He also missed the vote on the new GI bill, he is not even doing the job he was elected to do now.
Of the 3 senators who missed the vote, one was at a funeral, one has brain tumor and one was McCain.

I am starting to get the sense that McCain is more batshit stupid than Bush. McCain doesn’t remember what he said 5 minutes earilier and then gets all shitty when challenged claiming he didn’t say it. Thank god for video and Youtube.

the conflicts in the voting record of John McCain don’t mean a whit unless they are publicized on something other than Cand L. Basically, only like minded people read and contribute to this blog. Consequently, we can express outrage, anger, express ourselves sometimes eloquently, but none of it means an iota. This information has to have a vent to the general public, and the general public does not frequent C and L.

The question is asked, ” How can he be given a “slide” on contradiction of statement: one need look no further than the integrity of the media.” They Choose for whatever reason to ignore. We need honest journalists with the courage to continue asking until answers are provided and if answers are not forthrightly given, it is the responsibility of the press to expose. however, rather than ask, they would prefer in dealing with the “fluff” of the day. Their modus operandi is to surmise what they feel the public would like and they in turn make that the issue of the day. They publicize and continue to publicize in every aspect of the media until it fast becomes the byword on the lips of every trailer park denizen in the united states. There is no emphasis on Jeff Gannon and what he knows, there is no emphasis on how Bush lied to guide us into an illegal war, there is no emphasis on the scandal de jour of the Bush Administration, there is no emphasis on how we owe are economic livelihoods to China, rather they would rather promote who won the American Idol Contest or where is the girl who disappeared months ago on some vacation trip to a Jamaican island. We live in this country and we get the country we deserve.

I always love Digg for the responses to ‘OMFG we are all going to die’ whenever theres an asteroid predicted.
The best moment was five or six years ago when that big one shot past he Earth at 300,000 miles distance.
That was a WTF moment for NASA and all the space hobbyists, and a wake up call.
We get lucky when we see them and chart them, and most likely prob hit by one we never will see coming.

“Cool…then we don’t have to worry about the 2038 time_t bug.”

“Hmm… which is worse, the apocalypse or converting to 64-bit? Hard decision.”

“If you are worried about a time_t bug you have other issues. Maybe you should seek employment in the welfare cheese distribution field.”

always a bright side to everything :)

As a resident of Arizona, I’m happy that he isn’t showing up for work. Now, if he could get our other Senator Kyl not to show up for work, too. That would be stupendous. Because everything that these two vote in favor of only benefit big business.

McCain said he did not support the bill … because it doesn’t offer enough aid to the nuclear industry…

It didn’t offer ENOUGH aid for the nucular industry.

They just can’t get their fill of the corporate welfare. Isn’t the market supposed to decide if nucular power is cost effective?

I grow so very tired of Republican hypocrisy and their enabling media… :(

McCain was sure there to try to cram his amnesty for illegal aliens bill down our throats, against the will of the majority of Americans, wasn’t he? He’s still trying. Unfortunately both Clinton and Obama also want to grant amnesty to all border hoppers, criminals included. I’ll vote third party in protest. Never vote for anyone who is part of the “Washington Boy’s Club”, or America will never recover from the mess the dumb shit in the White House and his buddies have left for us.

Neo-classical secular humanist Says:

McCain, like all neo-liberals and neo-cons, cannot imagine a measure of a nation’s wealth other than the now-defunct measure that is the Gross Domestic Product. Other measures that take into account the overall health of a society including access to medical care, the safety and emotional well-being of children and of elders and the level of participation of the citizenry beyond the vote counts are foreign to these backward-looking faux capitalists. Any perceived threat to the production of goods is deemed de facto to be heretical and consequently attacked. McCain is a sclerotic 19th century buffoon.
