Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Naturally) Jokes About The Death Of Hillary Clinton

  NW Progressive:

Not only is Dave Reichert an ineffective congressman, but he has a twisted sense of humor, as the Tacoma News Tribune’s Niki Sullivan reports:

Right now, U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert is up. He repeated a joke I first heard him tell at the Pierce County Republicans’ Lincoln Day breakfast earlier this year. It involves an airplane that’s going to crash, one fewer parachute than passengers and, ultimately, Hillary Clinton dying.

It sounds, as David Goldstein observes, like an unoriginal, crass schoolyard joke I used to hear all the time from classmates when I was younger and attending elementary school. [..] The punch line relies on the assumption that the adult in question is stupid.

Now, Reichert or anybody else can argue that Hillary Clinton is ambitious, or stubborn, or shameless, but she is certainly not dumb.

To her credit, she’s exceptionally sharp and calculating in addition to being determined… and that has carried her a very long way.

Joking about the death of one of the two Democrats seeking the presidency, if not inappropriate, is certainly not classy, and is further evidence that Dave Reichert himself does not have good judgment.

Perhaps this is because he isn’t truly invested in his job.

He doesn’t work hard on Capitol Hill, his campaign is ambling or meandering along at a lazy pace, and he’s frequently careless with his choice of words. Last cycle his campaign finished with a condescending, sexist TV ad.

Reichert is running against Blue America candidate Darcy Burner.  Please considering helping Darcy’s campaign so we can show Reichert out the door.

Trying to argue that this guy is kind of an a**hole to try to change the mind of people that continuously vote for a**holes is pointless. Turn it around on them. I’m not sure what the joke stated exactly, but if she jumped in the joke without a parachute, argue she thought about the odds, like an intelligent person, and decided she had a greater chance of survival outside of the plane. If asked why she didn’t take a parachute, argue she was showing good leadership qualities in that, the other people on the plane were more important to her than herself. She is, after all, not running to be queen of America, but President.

I got this particular unfunny piece of propaganda as a one of those forwards I ask folks not to send over a year ago. (A local builder, the guy who keeps saying “business will go to shit when the Democrats get in” as if it hasn’t already, sends a steady stream of stuff like this) That version include Mrs. Clinton, the Pope and a boy scout.

Deputy Dave is one of the worst and most ineffectual representatives in the Congress. This episode only reinforces that assumption. Darcy will run a great campaign; open, honest and intelligent. What’s the big deal about this, again? Seriously? If someone told this exact joke and instead put Dubya’s name in there would there be a big outcry from us on the Left over this?

Come on now. It’s a stupid joke. He’s not wishing her to die, he’s not calling for her to be killed. It’s a stupid joke, that’s it.

Some people need to lighten up and stop letting their hatred of anything that dares oppose their way of thinking get in the way of what was simply a bad joke.

I’m sure I’ll get criticized for saying that, but it’s how I feel. Way too many sensitive people these days.

18
Bill Says:

This guy is an idiot. The joke is unfunny. And this is a non-issue. I’ve heard the same joke about Bush. As unfunny as the joke was, if someone had pulled aside the person who made the joke about Bush and told them they shouldn’t joke about wishing the death of our president, I’d have told them to lighten up. And that’s what you guys need to do if you don’t want to end up being partisan hacks. This is a non-issue. The fewer Republicans we have the better, but they need to go based on the real offensive stuff they do, not based on manufactured controversy.

Also, the joke relies on the person being stupid and arrogant. Clinton definitely fits the latter.

19
Gary Says:

Exactly Bill.

And my point is we get so up in arms when the Dems get hit on B.S. stuff. When people like Malkin go off the handle over Rachel Ray’s scarf, we mock them at getting upset at stupid little things and taking it out of context, or manufacturing outrage where there should be none. However, we turn around and do the same damn thing with things like THIS.

We just watched the death of the Clintons’ grip on the Democratic Party…..and not a moment too soon in my opinion.

Now it’s going to be the summer of slash and burn for the Clinton campaign and her supporters if you put much stock in Ickes and the “Denver! Denver! Denver!” Clinton supporters.

After reading online for years, I have to say, I agree with your statement. Always, always, always, everyone is saying to vote AGAINST so and so, with no real reasons why to vote for someone. Just because each is from opposing parties, means nothing.

RW Says:

This GOP mindset we see today used to be quite popular in America. You know, back in the day when Jackie Gleason used to threaten domestic violence on his housebound wife… ahhh yes, the good ol days. What ever happened to town square hangings and wife-beating? Notice that these off-color jokes that are being picked up by the press these days are by & large coming from the right wing where people cling to the times when going without question into WAR was like receiving a medal of honor from Jesus himself. But alas, the times are a changing. The kids have grown up and are now the major voting force today. We have seen the foolishness and inhumanity that is a military solution. We have seen the military used LIKE TOOLS to expand the capitalist markets abroad. We have been on the evil end of the spectrum now for 7 long years and have watched as our leadership has inflicted pain and suffering upon people conveniently out of sight by a vast ocean from the people here. We are sick of it. We are sick of the GOP. Sick of the lies. Sick of the military card that should have NEVER come into play outside of capturing Bin Laden. I persoanlly will NEVER again vote a single GOP member into ANY office. I ask now. Even the judges in our town, I strongly consider what party they are affiliated with before I cast my vote. No more hicks in office. No more off color jokes. Death is not something you joke about, especially to the international press. It is a sign of a rank amateur.

Oh right…. I forgot. Whoever is in office has absolute power and is not longer under Rule of Law…

I had the pleasure and honor to listen to Darcy Burner speak at our County Convention. She is a fine person and a wonderful candidate and will be an even greater Representative.

I am represented by a wonderful, Kucinich-esque Congressman, Jim McDermott, and I implore you to please help Darcy Burner. She is one of the good ones.

An older iteration of this joke had Nixon, the Pope, and a hippie but only two parachutes. As president, Nixon jumped first, but after he left there were still two parachutes, as the hippie explains “He just jumped out with my backpack.”

Someone have an answer for me? Wasn’t Darcy Burner in some sort of “non profit” scandal not that long ago? If there is any evidence, would she be any better a congresscritter than this tool?

39
Ben Says:

Well Reichert barely beat Darcy Burner in 2006, 51.31% to 48.69% by just a little over 3,000 votes. Those figures don’t bode well for Reichert this year, considering that the “Republican brand” isn’t worth shit right now.

Don’t take it the wrong way miss_kitty. I did not intend to insult. I was merely asking as Cafeenman was, what is so special about her that people should vote for her. All I’ve heard is a couple controversies with her in them. One was something about running a nonprofit org, paying herself over 100 grand a year, and having nothing to show for it. One was about an ad where she didn’t even show what party she represented. I don’t know, but grassroots candidates should have no questionable past should they? I mean she swears she was a Microsoft executive, even though people that work at Microsoft say she is full of it. If Dems REALLY want to trounce the Repubs, they really should run candidates with no hidden skeletons as grassroots candidates.

She was a Group program manager, FWIW.
The incomes of Microsoft employees is insane. I worked in the yards of many Microsoft employees and the 29-35 year old M$ retirees and if they aren’t mostly Thug, then I’d be incredibly shocked. Their 10,000-20,000 square foot homes, 4-8 car garages, quarter mile driveways, private bowling alleys, multiple swimming pools, $50,000 jungle gyms for the kids, 100+ ft yachts parked in the back yards at the extra-long dock and yards are ostentatious displays of new wealth, and on the surface of it, there’d be no reason for these noveau riche whiny arsed titty babies to be FOR Burner, since she is a Dem.

Why would the people who decry her have more cred for you than she does? I havent heard B Gates or any of the M$ PR machine denounce her claims…

If I sounded flip or snotty in my first reply to you, but that wasn’t my intent. :)

Wow. She ran an ad that didn’t say what party she was in. And supposedly (still no evidence to prove your assertion) robbed a charity. The first is a ‘meh,’ as Lisa Simpson would say. The second: show some evidence. Lexis didn’t show anything. If you have more details (name of the charity, etc.), post them so I can run a more specific Lexis search. Until then, refrain from smearing.
