McCain says “it’s tough, it’s tough in some respects” to be proud of America

Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat, this man redefines the term “being confused.”  He just nicely obliterated the right wing’s chances to smear Michelle Obama with that whole “she’s proud for the first time” stupidity.  Wasn’t that nice of him?

The Politico:  (h/t Jed Report)

So a man finally got a question into McCain and he had a very different sort of question.

The questioner noted that he had been educated at Princeton and Harvard and made more than $300,000 a year.

“How can I be proud of my country?” he asked.

Get it — he was mocking Michelle Obama and her statement earlier this year that her husband had for the first time in her life made her proud of her country.

Well, McCain either missed the joke or decided to ignore it and answer the question literally. I think it was the former because the individual asking the question had a thick accent that sounded to be either Indian or Pakistani, perhaps suggesting to McCain a recent immigrant grappling with America’s image abroad.

“I’ll admit to you that it’s tough, it’s tough in some respects,” McCain said, seeming to lend credence to Michelle Obama’s observation.

McCain said America needed to be “more humble, more inclusive.”

He observed that one of the ways to be proud of the country was to look at our history — and the sacrifices U.S. troops have made abroad.

McCain let his questioner follow up and the individual repeated, but didn’t clarify, his line.

In closing, McCain said he was proud of America in part “because of you and what you’ve been able to achieve and accomplish.”

For the senile shell-of-a-man, McGrampa, it’s tough, it’s tough in some respects to just remember his own name.

The only way Obama can possibly lose to McCain is a successful swiftboating campaign. They are focusing on the fact that the Obama’s are actually somewhat engaged in the black American experience, instead of rejecting it outright like a Clarence Thomas or Colin Powell. McCain could piss his pants on stage and it won’t matter if they can raise enough anxiety about Obama’s scary blackness.

METHINKS this is a bit of a reach! Although one has to continue to question a candidate who is so CLUELESS about much of what is out there on all levels…and, yet, our MSM continues to push the idea of the race being “tight”…now I thought two BUSH administrations answered this question for me …BUT, are “Merkins” really that STUPID!!!??????

I would agree…if this were the only case where this idiot didn’t know what was going on or who was involved in what…This guy doesn’t just mix up the non-crucial things like he said in the above post, but he also gets Sunni and Shia mixed up, he don’t know who Iran might be training and he doesn’t know the difference between our occupation of Iraq and the Marshal Plan that kept us in Germany and Japan for so many years. This guy doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. And he military service record doesn’t make up for the fact that he doesn’t know his facts.

Sounds like a communist plot to me! If you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars a year and then wait hours to see a doctor, is it really medicine?

Agreed. McCain gave what I think is an honest answer while at the same time giving the left the gift a defense for Mrs. Obama. What’s to be indignant about?

There are very good reasons not to elect McCain. Your examples above are a lot of them and then there are his policy stances.

But his answer to this question wasn’t a reason not to elect him. It’s not even something to hold against him. He said it’s hard sometimes to be proud of America.

I’m not proud of America at the moment (but more so than I’ve been since Bush got elected). I want to be proud of America which is one very good reason to elect a leader we are proud of. McCain is just too weak to be president. He won’t stand by any of his convictions - even the ones I don’t agree with. He caved to Bush in 2000 and then sucked up to him after that.

Anybody with even an ounce of self-respect would behave very differently toward Bush than McCain has. If he doesn’t respect himself do you think he respects us?

So him saying it’s tough to be proud of America sometimes is dead on.

The sad truth is that many voters, likely most voters, care more about whether or not the guy they’ll vote for is “more like me” as opposed to the voters’ concern about the candidates’s stance on the issues. The large number of voters identifying with John McCain is really a frightening thought. He is obviously dumber than dirt.

ZapPow Says:

Huh ! When you really look at history, there isn’t much to be proud. And, as a matter of facts, it’s the same for every country in the world.

History, anyway, rightly or wrongly, is mainly made of individuals having done something “historic”. And, objectively, being proud of your country just because you happen to have the same citizenship of some, or a bunch, of historic people doesn’t seem particularly clever, nor more clever than being proud of your country because, well, it is your country. After all, what it is, if not being proud of the accomplishments of others, and taking some of their glory to glorify oneself ?

People will uderstand that I don’t see why Michelle Obama should be proud of the US because she has been to Princeton and makes 300,000 a year. She has all the reasons to be proud of herself : it’s a personal success (she can be thankful to the US to have allowed it). Now, being “really proud” of her country now, because her husband has come where he is, is perfectly justifiable, since it wouldn’t have happened some years ago, and he came where he is now with the help of millions of people.

Anybody who hasnt been there or really looked hard at what is offered, go check out Wallyworlds (and other pharmacies) area for symptom covering meds.
Its radical the difference between say the UKs average pharmacy and what is sold in the US to sick customers,
here in the US people are suffering (from lack of real health care) and buying half assed pretend painkillers and other balms to avoid treatment or because they are not covered by their insurance.
Its a lucrative market for the OTC (over the counter) ‘med’ suppliers.

This is such an incredibly ignorant argument to begin with. I liken it to family members, whether they be children, parents, spouse, etc. Most of the time you’re proud of them, but sometimes they do things you’re not so proud of. And even when they do things you’re not proud of, you still love them. It’s the same with my country, I’m generally proud of America because we have done a lot of great things. We were founded on great principles. Lately, however, I haven’t been so proud, and even before that we’ve done some things that were less than decent. The last 7+ years have been a disaster. I’m particularly embarrassed by the Shrub. After all, name one thing he hasn’t made worse or screwed up from the get go.

I think you’ve missed the point of this post.

There are many on the right who would like to attack Michelle Obama because of her “finally proud of america” bit. But now McCain is helping her out by what he’s saying. So, for the those on the right, it’s like “Damn! Can’t he even stay on message? We’re trying to help!” So that makes it kinda funny for those of us watching, because he’s shooting their efforts in the foot. Hardly a matter of defense.

Leopards cant change their spots, nor can Republicans change their white supremacist bigoted ways.
And it doesnt help when black actors sell out (for money) for the racists in Hollywood,
that latest Eddie Murphy / Cedric film looks like just another rolling eyes (going by the trailer), black people are funny film.
Ok maybe 95% of the movie might be serious acting, but if 5% panders to the old hollywood notion of the scared black with big white rolling eyes then its not good.
