Vitter, Craig sponsor Federal Marriage Amendment
By Steve Benen Monday Jun 30, 2008 9:00pmJust this week, a group of Republican senators re-introduced the Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution, which, as we know, would ban gay marriage.
This isn’t especially surprising. Republicans are looking at the political landscape, and they’re feeling awfully discouraged. The polls look bad, the base looks depressed, and fundraising looks iffy. Rallying the far-right troops with an anti-gay amendment to the Constitution — even though it has no chance at even getting so much as a hearing — might be helpful to the conservative movement.
But the funny part is looking over the list of the 10 original sponsors. Most of the names are predictable — Brownback and Inhofe, for example — but there are two others whose names stand out: Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho).
Yes, two of the principal sponsors of a constitutional amendment to “protect” marriage include one far-right Republican who hired prostitutes and another far-right Republican who was arrested for soliciting gay sex in an airport men’s room.
As my friend Kyle put it, these two are “not exactly the poster boys of the family values crowd or particularly upstanding examples of the supposed sanctity of the ‘union of a man and a woman.”‘

That is the most ironic thing i've heard all day.
stewart and colbert are going to love this
leno.. might even get in on this......to funny!
Skepchick.org mentioned this a couple days ago.
The jokes write themselves.
The funny thing is that their constituents do not get it. How do these people stick around?
Very special. I wonder if Vitter was wearing diapers while the bill was read.
Hypocritical Republican(t) ba$tards! They'll say anything anytime and never mean a word they say... Lying crooks both of these effers!
I thought irony was dead. Is irony now a zombie come to eat the soup that remains of Americans' brains?
Really, we must beat these fucked up people in November. They are soulless, lying, denying, self loathing, vile racists who absolutely fear and despise the diverse direction America is clearly headed.
That loud "PING!" sound you just heard was the needle on the irony meter breaking.
This is a joke right? I mean these idiots actually have the balls to sponsor this? Can't the Repugs find anyone with credibility. Oh right! Their Republicans!
I'm not surprised in the least bit that Republicans, especially Vitter and Craig, need to ensure that their own desires are mitigated by a binding legal contract of marriage between a man and a woman. If it weren't for their marriages, they'd be compulsively f*cking everything in sight.
and another far-right Republican who was arrested and plead guilty as charged for soliciting gay sex in an airport men’s room.
Not that Republicans aren't compulsively f*cking everything in sight, that is.
d. vitter and his wife were very opinionated about b.clinton and his affair(s)....HYPOCRITE
It doesn't matter to the Jesus Nazis. Despite a Niagra Falls-like torrent of evidence to the contrary, they will still contend that Christianity and Republicanism are congruent with Patriotism and family values. When your entire belief system is based on lies, when hypocrisy reigns supreme in every aspect of your life, and when you judge others harshly for the identical behavior you exhibit, it's just another day of reinforcing hate and stupidity.
Apparently in order to be a GOP Senator it is necessary to get all sense of irony removed.
Hey, people do not have time to even think about this crap. Wes Clarke told the world that McGrandpa's POW record does not necessarily make him qualified to be a good President. Clarke was correct of course but these perverts sponsor a "Family Values" bill and the people who they represent won't get it.
Highest divorce rate? Texas.
Lowest? Massachusetts.
yeah karl, I think Vitter's wife said something about Lorana Bobbit about cutting of her husbands penis. Maybe that's why Vitter has been out of the news!
The bigger question would be; why did the other writers/sponsors of this bill LET these two perverts (not that there is anything wrong with perverts) sponsor their bill? Why did they let them put their name on the bill? Who would they? Why?
P.D. @ 20:
You mean he had his dick cut off?
There's no irony involved in this at all. Conservatism is the perfect cover for closet sex addicts, perverts and criminals of all types. What better way to hide that which you're ashamed from the world than behind a veneer of law and order, religion and rigid authoritarianism?
Yet another example of Repugs falling short on credibility...........yaaaawn.......these guys have their heads so far up their rectum that they don't know which way to turn to find daylight.
Captain @22, Yes siree Bob! In the nineties. That's why when the news came out about Vitter, I almost peed myself! I was laughing that hard!
I wonder if these hypocritical bastards know we can see through their bs?
This makes perfect sense. Who better to show Americans that airport gay sex and serial adultery are bad things than those who have committed them? Really, you radically far left wing nuts just don't know how to appreciate the service these brave men who have provided examples to the country. They are out there making these egregious immoral and illegal mistakes so you don't have to. They sacrifice themselves for the soul of the country and you people denigrate them. How really sad. Next thing you will do is shit on the flag and wipe you ass with the constitution. Sorry, George and Dick are already doing that for you. Two more patriotic Americans showing the country what not to do.
Craig and Vitter are laying the groundwork to get reelected. The rapture monkey's love this.
Only in America...you poor bastards are so fucked!
When I was but a wee lad I recall a movie called the Russians are Coming...was a funny comedy. Nowadays in the USA it would be called the _________ are Coming (Insert latest threat to religious crazies).
Happy Canada Day, BTW. :)
David Vitter is a failure as a husband and is weak as a man and Larry Craig is about as
self loathing as one can get.
Well, hopefully the voters in their states will vote them out. If not, then the voters are total a**holes!
Um.. these two are exactly the poster boys of the family values crowd: hypocrites down to their very core.
Craig's endorsement makes sense. Look, for some people, man-on-man action just isn't any fun unless it's DIRTY.
The last thing you want when you're presenting your wide stance to a hot little number in the next stall is a MARRIAGE PROPOSAL.
Sheesh. Talk about taking all the fun out of bathroom sex!
They really have NO SHAME, do they??
If I might offer a slight correction. Craig was not merely arrested for soliciting sex in that airport washroom, he plead guilty.
Y'all, gay marriage broke my transmission. Now I cain't work.
Leslie [Hussein] @ 4:
My exact thought as well! Are they trying to make themselves a laughing stock? How can they be so unbelievably tone deaf?
gay marriage bad, bj in the stall good ?? there is some logic for you...
Of course they think marriage needs protecting. It can't be their own fault that they need to have sex with strangers.
Where's MSM reporting this? Oh right! They are still talking about Clarke!
hey there's vitter and craig........which one is craig?
the one dragging toilet paper on his shoe...
childish what can i say
Ahhh so many problems in this world _ poverty, homelessness, hunger, lack of health insurance, infant mortality, rape, child exploitation, crime, war, human rights abuses _ but I have to say that giving two people of the same sex a legal mechanism to recognize their love for each other is just absolutely the worst thing in the world, trumping all the other evils in this world.
I heard this earlier in passing and thought it was a joke. Should have known better, because no one could make this stuff up.
I agree SB but don't you think it's enough to say that they were just men, as it is: " one Man who hired prostitutes and another man who was arrested for soliciting gay sex in an airport men’s room." It's enough to know they were two who sponsored an all republican sponsored bill to know that the two men were from that party. Why trash them the same way they trash people on "our side?"
Just believe in your self, and screw them and what they do.
Am I to assume that this "Marriage Protection Bill" will provide criminal relief when a party of the first part commits adultry? At least give the party of the second part 1 hour with them in a room with sharp instruments, some rubber tubing, meat tenderizing hammer, .... waterboarding utensils..... BEFORE marching the party of the first part to the hospital/jail. Let's TRULY protect marriage... put some TEETH, (feet - kicking... elbows, knuckles, etc) into the bill.
If they really wanted to "protect marriage," they'd make adultery a criminal act punishable by fines or jail time. That they don't propose such is a demonstration that this is only shallow political theater designed to distract the public.
I know this is cliche, but "do as I say, not as I do," is the definition of hipocricy (aka Republicans)
The saddest part is they probably think their sponsorship of this repressive act is a measure of atonement for their 'sins'. Sad, misguided and pathetic are the kindest things I can think of to say. My list of unkind things is much longer.
Vincennes @ 42:
If we paid half of the attention we have given the gay marriage debate to the issue of torturing detainees we would all be sitting in front of the tv watching impeachment proceedings.
The comedy team of Vitter and Craig must be planning on taking it on the road when they lose their current jobs.
I guess Sen. "Wide Stance" Craig has a foot in both camps. Hope this doesn't get "stalled" in committee.
Ted Haggard is apparently out of his "therapy" to cure him and back and available to protect marriage as well.
This is a perfect example of Republicans voting against their own interests.
and Larry Craig is further proof that Republicans really do suck!
That could be a headline in The Onion.
a toe tappin, diaper wearin, family values campaign
just what the repuglitards need
when you think the hypocrisy can't get any deeper. the gop comes thru again
Vitter's case is special even for a Republican.
He took Bob Livingston's seat after Bob had to leave the congress for ...... a prostitute scandal that had gone unnoticed until ....... Bob was considered for the Speakers' slot when ...... during the Clinton B.J. impeachment trial ....... it came out that Speaker Newt was having an extra marital affair too.
That's why we got Dennis Hastings as speaker. Dennis didn't have a dick or any balls at all. Just greed, see that worked out well.
Not just arrested for his acts, but Larry Craig pleaded guilty of soliciting sex from a man in a public restroom. Like guilty plea that he later tried to withdraw, I'm saying he's a flip flopper since he loved gay homosexual sex before he was against it.
.
Because NOTHING can come between the marriage of a man and a woman...
... Unless it's two men in a stall.
Because NOTHING can come between the marriage of a man and a woman...
... Unless it's wrapped in a diaper by his hooker.
Because NOTHING can come between the marriage of a man and a woman...
... Unless it's the gay dug dealer.
.
Oh god, maybe I should just [deleted by site monitor] myself, but what the heck- here's my two cents: I really think Vitter is the crux of the biscuit here...Without descending into forbidden language, how shall I put this? Notice how the hookers who came forward didn't say "oh yes, he was fun in bed, great lover, what's his wife's problem" or something like that? Nooo, the pathetic bastard wanted to be...diapered. Diapered! A nasty little baby wielding all that power and money stolen from the broad tax base. God-a-mighty. Makes ya wanta spit, don't it?
I was over at Jesus' General. He's got a couple of really funny campaign posters he's put up on the subject.
This is a gift-wrapped present, folks. Whodathunk that the pugs would provide us with such great material in yet another election season.
This whole scenario should be used over and over again to tar the republicans with the hypocrisy label they've worked so hard and so long to get.
"Yes, two of the principal sponsors of a constitutional amendment to “protect” marriage include one far-right Republican who hired prostitutes and another far-right Republican who was convicted for soliciting gay sex in an airport men’s room."
Fixed that for you.
Rush Limbaugh an unmarried man and a Christian Conservative was caught with Viagra. What does an unmarried Christian need with Viagra? Sex outside of marriage is against their God isn't it?
Proposed gay marriage ban amendment from Republican's? Must be an election year. What year is it anyway, 2006, 2004, 2000? The Republicans seem to think every election year is 1952.
When I first read about this online I thought it was absolutely surreal, then I heard someone chuckling behind me. I turned around and there was the ghost of Rod Serling who promptly said:
"I wrote this shit. I thought I'd try my hand at political comedy. Whaddya think?"
Jaw-droppingly funny! And people still vote for these shameless clowns?
These Christian extremists hate everything America stands for.
Good fucking grief, Christianity is utterly evil.
The irony is THICK!
The rumor of the death of irony has been greatly exagerated.
What about States' rights? Since when is it the business of the federal government to get involved in such matters? Marriage is and always has been a local issue, left to each state to regulate as it deems appropriate.
Republicans keep showing what liars and hypocrites they are.
