McCain Lies About His Support For MLK Jr. Day in Arizona

Liar, liar, Grampa McSame pants on fire. Clearly, McCain is not used to the YouTube generation where you can no longer lie without a bunch of bloggers furiously fact-checking.  And the facts for McCain, they don’t look so good.

Progressive Accountability

McCain Defended Opposition Of Federal MLK Holiday By Saying He Supported Arizona’s State Holiday. During a press availability in Panama City, Florida, John McCain said, “I have supported hundreds of pieces of legislation, which would help Americans obtain an equal opportunity in America. I am proud of that record, from fighting for the recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday in my state to sponsoring specific legislation that would prevent discrimination in any shape or form in America today.” [McCain Press Availability In Panama City, Florida, 8/1/08]

  • FACT: McCain Supported Republican AZ Governor’s Decision To Rescind MLK Holiday. ABC News reported, “In Arizona, a bill to recognize a holiday honoring MLK failed in the legislature, so then-Gov. Bruce Babbitt, a Democrat, declared one through executive order. In January 1987, the first act of Arizona’s new governor, Republican Evan Mecham, was to rescind the executive order by his predecessor to create an MLK holiday. Arizona’s stance became a national controversy. McCain backed the decision at the time.” [ABC News, 4/3/08]
  • FACT: McCain Supported Gov. Evan Mecham’s Decision In 1987 To Rescind Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, “In a vote likely to haunt him for the rest of his public career, McCain voted against 1983 legislation establishing the third Monday in January as the federal holiday marking King’s birthday. Back home in Arizona, he supported Gov. Evan Mecham’s decision in 1987 to rescind an executive order creating a state holiday for King, but later reversed his position.” [Philadelphia Inquirer, 6/16/08]
  • FACT: McCain Voted Against Creating Martin Luther King Holiday. In 1983, McCain voted against a motion to suspend the rules and pass a bill to designate the third Monday of every January as a federal holiday in honor of the late civil rights leader, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The motion passed 89-77. [HR 3706, Vote 289, 8/2/83; CQ 1983]

He’s tried to back pedal that this was some youthful ignorance on his part, but he was 48 years old when he voted against the MLK holiday.  As much as I’d like to characterize 48 as youthful–and trust me, nothing would make me happier, that just isn’t going to fly.

Isn’t it funny that the media has played in a loop the comments that McInsane made immediately before his lie (about the race card), but not a word about the lie itself? Not even KO! They wouldn’t be trying to help this demented old fool to get into office by covering up his lies! Of course not, they are all “fair and balanced”!!!! What a crock!

8
Ozymandias Says:

Wow. All politicians lie, but this is astonishing. Growing up in Arizona, I remember McCain’s opposition to MLK day quite well. If this lie gets any media traction at all this could be a big deal - especially in his home state.

As he runs his fingers along the top of that sign in front of him he stammers and the little hamster in his head starts running at full speed, the wheel is spinning and McBush is trying real hard to think “Ohhhhh fuck…..what have I done for African Americans?….What have I done for African Americans?….crap……stall, buy some time….ask her to repeat the question”

“What was the first part?”

He opposed the Webb bill, then didn’t show up to vote on it, then tried to take credit for its passage.

Fact: posting facts on a progressive website is just preaching to the choir. They need to go on Obama’s Fight The Smears website, which is the only one the lazy-assed press corps reads. Even when posted there, there’s only a 50% chance that the press will read them, a 50% chance that they’ll report them, and a 50% chance that they’ll actually be reported as fact, rather than ‘opposition claims.’ So, unless we’re talking about flag pins, there’s only about a 12.5% chance that it will make it to the mainstream news cycle.

Mr Squirrel Says:

Now now, I’m sure there’s an innocent explanation. Maybe he meant he was fighting for its recognition as a non-holiday. Or something. Whatever, that’s some straight talking, of that you can be sure.

Hey wait!!! I’m 48 and it damn sure it youthful. I have to wait two years to join AARP.

“12.5% chance that it will make it to the mainstream news cycle.”

Well, however miniscule, I guess it beats “overwrought assertions by left wing bloggers.”

Can’t blame that on a senior moment. The second question stunned him so much, he forgot the first question. What an old fool.

I am sure I heard him yesterday when asked why he voted agains MLK that he said that it was because he made a mistake. I thought that sounded unusually honest and humbling of him even though he did not elaborate.

He does not even remember yesterday? My dad is 82, and I expect that sort of thing now and again.

Gee, I wonder why, if you have a black man running for high public office - say, Barack Obama or Harold Ford - the opposition feels compelled to run low-life political ads featuring tacky, sexually provocative white women who have no connection whatsoever to the black male candidates.

Spare me any more drivel about the high-mindedness of John McCain.

21
Hulk Says:

No lie too great for this scum bucket.

Funny, but a couple years ago I actually admired many things about John McCain. However today, I admire absolutely NOTHING about this john mcAncient. He has clearly sold his soul to the devil, and there is nothing honorable about this pathetic politician any longer. A sad day for his followers.

22
V LaRoche Says:

McCain wouldn’t feel so comfortable–or so oblivious, perhaps–if he didn’t feel he could loosen his belt and say just anything that comes out of his mouth. If the election is fixed already, and who says it isn’t, McCain can scratch and fart his way into the White House.

Sure, all politicians lie. That’s the attitude the GOP operatives and RNC henchmen are counting on. That this lie will be seen as an individual lie instead of a whole fabric of lies. They’re counting on the TV audience only hearing about one or two “gaffes” and 1) believing it’s “that politics game again”–such that McCain will be seen as accused of lying about MLK Day instead of actually lying; 2) choosing to disbelieve anything if it is critical of McCain.

Whatever piece of news comes out on McCain has to seem like character assassination. “He didn’t say that, he couldn’t have said that, it’s the media putting words into his mouth, he can’t get an even break, if the media says he told a lie it’s probably that he told the truth and that liberal media . . . .”

There’s just something too Gomer Pyle, too Forrest Gump about the way McCain’s campaigning. It’s like he’s recognizing no boundaries because he doesn’t have to. Facts? Hell with ‘em. Low blows? Name of the game. Fair play? I will kill you.

Prediction: He will get forensically incinerated in the official debates with Obama, and the Court Composers of the MSM will promptly wax rhapsodic about how McCain “won” them.

You just watch.

That whole ditty was nuts. First, he couldn’t remember the question BECAUSE IT HAD TWO PARTS. What a dolt. Then he lied, then he lied again, then he said he’d be proud to show his legislative record on MLK. Nobody called him on it? Hope Obama’s campaign is keeping record of McCain’s lies.

28
cowboyneok Says:

I think its time to slam Mr. McGoo for where the McCain campaign thinks he has his greatest stregth. They coo endlessly about McCain’s glorious “experience” in politics. Well, lets compare him to the most experienced and powerful politician in the Bush Administration. Dick Cheney is simultaneously the most experienced and disgusting unpopular politician in Washington, DC. Lets have a commercial where Dick Cheney and John McCain are compared as THE SAME and sharing similar qualities of experience and contrast it with Barack Obama’s judgment. Judgment should beat EXPERIENCE every time!

You are right of course, Obama is being to polite. If anything we should have learned from 2004, the slime machine works. But remember they tried the same bullshit in 2006, and it didn’t work. Maybe Americans are starting to figure that out. But I won’t hold my breath,

I’m thinking Obama’s waiting to see how much it affects him in the polls before coming out swinging. I wouldn’t be surprised if his campaign is putting together some jewels of some ads right now getting ready to let it rip against Lying Bastard…..I hope so anyway. I hope he has learned from Kerry’s mistakes not to wait too late to respond and to go tit for tat.

why do people listen to poll results from the same asshats who lie to us about every fucking thing else.
