Daily Show: Has Michelle Obama sufficiently proven her patriotism?

Jon Stewart examines the media's bizarre obsession with questioning Michelle Obama's patriotism in the context of her amazing convention speech.

"She's got to [prove her patriotism]! She's a Democrat. She must prove she loves America, as opposed to Republicans who everyone knooows love America. They just hate half the people living in it."

Of course Karl Rove disagrees, writing in the Wall Street Journal that Michelle "could have done better 'on saying I love America.'”

Foist!
Stewart was on fire last night.

First

Has there ever been another presidential candidate or their spouse questioned about their patriotism? If not, it seems to me the patriotism question is a form of some sort of racism. I'm not trying to light a fire, it just seems strange that our first serious bi-racial candidate and his wife would face such unusual scrutiny.

Karl Rove could have done a little better...like honoring the request of the Congress for information regarding his involvement in and knowledge of the outing of a CIA agent, and other treasonous activities.

Karl Rove could have done a little better in honoring the laws of this country by responding to subpoenas, and understanding that NO ONE, not even the President, is above the law.

Karl Rove could have done a little better in honoring the traditions of America and the law of America by respecting that all people are created equal, that everyone is entitled to a presumption of innocence under the law, that disagreement on policy issues does not make a person a traitor...but rather a patriot.

Karl Rove could have done a little better by not engaging in yellow journalism in his present job, and character assassination in his former job.

Every Democrat that's run for the office in the past 15 years.

Exactly......but what would you expect from the Repukes and MSM.

Right on John, Repukes love their country, they just hate half the people in it.

Michelle could learn a thing or two from Hillary. Speaking of Hillary. Why isn't she the VP nominee? I will keep asking until I get an honest answer.

That pudgy, nose-picking, yellow-bellied traitor has a lot of nerve giving "patriotism" advice to the luminous Michelle Obama.

Only pig I've seen with Rove's face is a consultant for Fox news, but I don't think you want that one.

Michelle faced the dual dilemma of humanizing herself to a society that has appropriated the image of "the angry black woman," and of presenting her husband as a typical caring father.

It is infuriating that this Harvard and Princeton grad is forced to, in some sense, apologize for achieving what every family wants, what all parents work for their children to have, merely because her blackness causes anxiety in the same people who have claimed for years that all black folks need to do is "work hard" to succeed.

When women like Michelle Obama do succeed, they're supposed to minimize their accomplishments so that certain people don't feel insulted. The talking heads never ask why, because white anxiety about black self-determination is self-justifying, even in 2008. Meanwhile, John McCain runs solely on his biography, as the press sits in a rapturous silence. "I used to be a POW" will not reverse the housing crisis, it will not bring health care to the uninsured, it will not regulate the credit card industry, it will not prevent the government from taking your laptop or tapping your phone with no evidence of wrongdoing. But you wouldn't know that from watching CNN.

By far and away the best line of the night...the best line of the entire show, ever!!

“She’s got to [prove her patriotism]! She’s a Democrat. She must prove she loves America, as opposed to Republicans who everyone knooows love America. They just hate half the people living in it.”

This is so true, and it definitely got the biggest applause I've ever seen on the show.

Thank you John Stewart. Why can't you be on the big channels so they can hear the irony of this screwed up, ass backwards country?

Everybody knows all black people hate America. Duh!

That, plus POW, is John McCain's strategy in a nutshell.

John nailed it. What the Repugs want is the other half of the country to do is move to France if you want that fancy liberal European culture stuff. If you don't Nascar and Murica' LEAVE!

Why do you think Jazz Musicians do better and are far more popular in in Europe for example and can barely survive in the United States?

But what did he miss?

He should ask MS Dowd . .

.. this Democratic convention has a vibe so weird and jittery, so at odds with the early thrilling, fairy dust feel of the Obama revolution, that I had to consult Mike Murphy, the peppery Republican strategist and former McCain guru.

“What is that feeling in the air?” I asked him.

“Submerged hate,” he promptly replied.

About what? Michelle isn't a politician, but she has a pretty firm grasp on the English language and speaks standard English like the rest of us. There's nothing she could learn from Hillary with regard to her speech at the convention.

Michelle Obama executed brilliantly what she had to do, but it's ridiculous that she had to do it. The section of this country that thinks she's a wild, angry radical have obviously never had a real conversation with any African-Americans. As a general rule, real Afrocentrists don't straighten their hair. That's one of the most widespread capitulations to white notions of beauty, and activists from Malcolm X onward have denounced it as self-hatred. Now go look at Ms. Obama's hair again.

If you were an elitist, you have to keep track of what country your in, as you could be in China giving away Americans job, or in Africa planting false information for America, or in Iraq painting rosy picture of the war effort.
