Gustav On GOP's Horizon?

Reuters is speculating that, three years after Katrina highlighted Bush's who-gives-a-f*** attitude towards his poorest "subjects" (he was presenting a birthday cake to McCain) and brought the Third World to America, Hurricane Gustav could bring all those memories back just in time for the GOP's convention.

I guess that prayer for rain came a little late and a little off course.

I hope this thing fizzles. But it won't. Gustav does come at a time that is very odd though. GOP= disaster.

Looks like GOD has the last laugh on the right
Not even Rain but a Hurricane for the GOP

What do the so called Christians say now?

I sincerely hope and pray that no one else is hurt or killed by Gustav - but oh, wouldn't it be a neat little twist of fate if Gustav does strike during the GOP convention?

Isn't it the fundaMentalists who keep thinking hurricanes are god's judgment? Then maybe god is reminding people why we shouldn't vote republican.

Hope Gustav misses LA

Maybe God was confused about which convention he was supposed to send rain for. Here in Denver the forecast is for sunny skies.

Poetic would be Gustav came right up the fuukin river and smacke the twin cities.,..

I think this is kinda fucked up...schadenfreude even....
Hurricanes are terrible forces of nature that should be wished on no one....using a storm that has already killed at least 22 people in Haiti alone, and who knows how many more if it hits the gulf coast as a political tool....I'm disgusted with C&L and Cernig for doin that.
We are better than that.

how about we take the high road and hope that the storm fizzles and becomes a non-issue for everyone.

I mean really....am I being too harsh or whatever here? I just think it's fucking despicable.

I truly hope Gustav doesn't cause a lot of devastation wherever it hits, but if, in fact, hurricanes are God's judgement (I personally don't beleive this), the timing is very telling. Alsok this close to the election, will the Bush administration suddenly be active and involved in helping the victims of Gustav, and will people be able to see through the political BS.

Yes, because wishing makes it so, huh? Sorry, no magical thinkers here, except maybe you.

Gustav has already killed over 20 people. :(
This is a killer Hurricane.
Gustav is going to explode when he hits warmer water in the Gulf. Reports are that the water temp is at least 85 degrees in the gulf.
Yeah, we need more offshore riggs in the gulf. /

I hate hurricanes! But I have no control over the weather and for all we all know this thing could take an eastward turn and blow the shit out of south Florida. Having said that, I sure hope whoever it draws a bead on will be able to get the hell out of its way.

Okay, one thing this storm is going to do is suck the air out of the news for the next few days and probably into next week. It's hard for a convention to compete with weather damage news. When all those people were praying for rain, maybe they forgot to tell god where they wanted the rain to fall. He's trying to oblige them without GPS instructions.

So how soon after the storm makes landfall will McCain dispatch Cindy to the gulf coast to assess the humanitarian efforts?

liberalNmoderation @ 10:

I seriously doubt anyone here want the storm to hurt anyone.

Some of us are just pointing out how its timing directly highlights the failures of the neocons, and hoping people have learned from those terrible lessons.

The republican talking point three weeks ago was that Katrina came and went and nary a drop of oil was spilled. Now this reporter said "serious damage to underwater pipes and platforms".

Who is telling the truth? How can we drill if oil's gonna spill? :)

I hope the storm fizzles, but that the oil rig damage story grows legs. Especially if they can show repubs saying "no damage done", and show storm battered rigs in the background. "Nary a drop spilled" and maps of the oil spill floating.

I am pretty damned positive no one visiting this site wishes damage or pain on anyone as a result of this storm. But not one person here can do a damned thing to change the storm or its direction. We are simply talking about the coincidence of events, nothing more, nothing less. If this storm were heading directly toward my home, and as poorly as they predicted the path of tropical storm Fay, it eventually could be, I would feel the same way that I do now if there were an unusual coincidence surrounding it.

On a completely unrelated note, isn't it interesting how there is very little interest or excitement about McSame's VP pick, as compared to last week and Obama's pick?

Yeah, but if it does hit, even as a tropical storm, you can bet that the Bush Admin. will fall over themselves making a dramatic effort to send help / aid, with lots of heroic photo ops, thereby promoting the myth that Republicans are the only ones who can protect you.....

50 billion gallons of crude oil flowing UP the Mississippi and right into Minneapolis/St Paul for a Monday night arrival.

Having been through many Typhoons and Hurricanes (depending on which side of the globe I'm on) I wouldn't wish one on anyone. But i do see the comedy here, Hagee and Falwell both made comments about their angry gods wrath etc etc. So I feel they open the door for us to feel some kind of amusement in that regard, but only for comment sake. I don't think anyone here actually wish's any harm on fellow humans.

It's all about the 35 Electoral Votes.

Fema and the rest had better be prepared! The levies are secure. Right? Hurricanes are inevitable. The Bush Administration is in charge of our security. Right? I truly hope that they have done, and will do it right this time.

but Katrina was a lesson that we should learn from.

GOP may love this country but blatant disrespect for the American People is outstanding

If Hurricane Gustav can remind us that we can do better for this country, that people today are still being left behind, that the government is not working for us and when a crisis comes along we need action.

It should not be political but when McCain says his pledge that “Never again will a disaster of this nature be handled in the disgraceful way it was handled”.

Americans need a reminder

*McCain Voted Against Emergency Funding Bill, Including $28 Billion for Hurricane Relief

*McCain Voted Against Five Months of Medicaid For Hurricane Katrina Victims For Up To Five Months

*McCain Voted Twice Against Establishing A Commission To Study The Response To Hurricane Katrina

*McCain Opposed Granting Financial Relief To Those Affected By Hurricane Katrina

The timing of this storm is almost enough to make me believe in divine intervention. It's a giant reminder to America of how the repugnacans have lead the the most incompetent administration in our nations history.

If wishing (or prayer) did any good, then I wish Gustav fizzles. That said, it will be interesting to see how the Repugnican government "handles" another disaster. I agree. We should never hope for rain of biblical proportions. That is truly an evil thing to hope for. At best we can hope it fizzle. It won't. I've been tracking this storm for over a day now. Let's just hope that those that can get out do, and those that can't get help quickly.

It pisses me off the our "National" Guard is off in other lands in the first place. Even the name implies they are for guarding OUR nation, not off fighting a war brought on by and inept, ignorant, oil hungry, profiteering couple of madmen (bush and cheney) in the whitehouse.

I have decided to use lower case on all referencing to the present whitehouse administration.

liberalNmoderation @ 8,

Where, exactly, do I wish this? I reported exactly what Reuters was saying, as a summary of their video and tied that to the facts of Bush's poor response on Katrina, just as Reuters does itself. No more. Gustav and its possible effect on the GOP convention is newsworthy - Politico has a piece on it today too - and thus worthy of blogging here. However, I was very careful in writing the lede to introduce the video that I didn't fall prey to any hint of "wishing this on the GOP". I strongly object to your insinuation that I did so.

Regards, C

Sharktattoo @ 25:

Yes! I also found it interesting how largely positive the reactions to the pick of Biden were.
The McSame pick, OTOH, is almost guaranteed to spark dissent and complaints. (just as the nomination of McCain did)
Who's the party with the unity problem now? (Actually, if you ignore the MSM's invented narrative, they've been the party with the unity problem all along, what with having to disown their own administration, despite some of them still defending it, and the religious right starting to question their loyalty, etc.)

So really, the GOP pick should be the more interesting one, really. It is to me, in a schadenfreude kind of way.

If anything, if this thing hits, we'll see the GOP bend over backwards to redeem themselves and prove to the world that they learned their lesson the last time, so, given that the American Public has the attention span of a gnat, this could work to their advantage.

If it does hit expect to see weeks of political grand-standing with both sides doing the rolling up their sleeves and getting to work imagery bit.

TOP MCCAIN ADVISOR: THERE ARE NO UNINSURED AMERICANS

Would someone wake me when it's over?

You can't make this stuff up.

John Goodman, the architect of McMoron's healthcare "plan" had this to say today regarding the news that Texas leads the nation in the number of uninsured.

But the numbers are misleading, said John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a right-leaning Dallas-based think tank. Mr. Goodman, who helped craft Sen. John McCain's health care policy, said anyone with access to an emergency room effectively has insurance, albeit the government acts as the payer of last resort. (Hospital emergency rooms by law cannot turn away a patient in need of immediate care.)

"So I have a solution. And it will cost not one thin dime," Mr. Goodman said. "The next president of the United States should sign an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American – even illegal aliens – as uninsured. Instead, the bureau should categorize people according to the likely source of payment should they need care.

"So, there you have it. Voila! Problem solved."

No health crisis in USA

Just like she did after Katrina? Oh wait, her husband wasn't running for president at that time so there was no need.

The REPUBLICANS have been a Category 5 storm for 8 years.

McCaint Remember @ 48:

two MORE storms on the heels of Gustav as well btw.

Yeah I know….check the latest…
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mfl/tropical/

Looks like there is a confirmed tropical depression #8 - to the east of Gustav. It appears there are 3 'oh shit, we need to watch these' weather patterns as well. Two to the east of depression #8 and one to the west of Gustav. That one to the west of Gustav may have the potential to suck some of the wind out of Gustav's sails??? One can hope??

Fay is not quite out of the picture yet either. So, there are currently *6* tropical weather disturbances on the radar at one time. I think that that is the news!!

oZer @ 9:

how about we take the high road and hope that the storm fizzles and becomes a non-issue for everyone.

The high road only leads to GOP bullshit being flung our way.

*WARNING - Two Face appears!
We've seen Bush/McCain, now meet Rove/McCain

McCain will be announcing his VP pick. Apparently, his VP choice will be informed today, and announced tomorrow in Ohio at 10 AM.

They plan to leak the choice in the late hours, early morning tomorrow in order to try and squash the coverage of Obama's speech.

My bet right before Obama's speech

POW McCain will get a pass on that swipe from the traditional media.

I can't wait to see the split screen coverage! Bush/McCain on one half telling their latest lies........Bush /McCain on the other half, eating cake.

Poor Cindy, first a sprained wrist from an overly eager McLame supporter, then off to those peasants in Georgia to deliver aid and now she may have to go and associate with those low class people in NO. Being the wife of a GOP presidential candidate is "hard work."

I wonder if they might cancel the repub convention due to the storm? bush is supposed to speak at the convention next Monday night.

It's in St. Paul, right?

We've got about 10hrs left to explain to the American people why...

1) We saved Social Security from being privatized and poured into the collapsing financial market and sucked dry.

2) The GOP isnt just distorting the dri
