"Sen. McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time?

Despite ad released telling Obama "How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done." John McCain waited all of 2 minutes before attacking Barack Obama and his speech.

McCain released harshly negative response at 11:02 PM. Typical Repuglians slime machine, and pretty typical of the McCain campain and their double-talk express.

I tried to read it, but my brain translated it into that "wha wha" sound the adults make in the Charlie Brown cartoons.

A war criminal gets away with involuntary manslaughter. Workers haven't been this depressed since Bush pre-9/11. Rove was the one who threw Lieberman under the bus.

The Democrats skipped the head this time and went straight for the heart, producing a convention that will be inspiring people for weeks and months to come. Great job, Democrats!

I expect to hear a lot about God from Republicans. And Israel. And brave soldiers. And a particular POW. It's going to be very boring.

Well it's time for them to own their failure. It's time for us to change America. And that's why I'm running for president of the United States.

You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.

We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put a little extra money away at the end of each month so you can someday watch your child receive her college diploma. We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was president -- when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of go down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.

McCain is going to be utterly depressing to listen to.

Not to mention Hurricane Gustav bearing down on the convention...

Don't worry folks, under a McCain administration, you will be fine, stop whining, it will be just:

1-War with Iran.
2-War with Russia.
3-War with Germany since Putin is president of Germany and giving cold-war style speeches.
4-War with North Korea.
5-and my friends, we have to stand up to China too.
6-$100 Trillion deficit.
7-No oil for you my friends, you don't need to drive a car, play some sports, start jugging [c expletive].

but that's all, I mean, come on , nothing dangerous. he will not attack Pakistan, my friends Pakistan is a sovereign nation, shame on you, SHAME ON YOU, you want attack a sovereign nation in the 21st century? is this logical? you are warmongers and bunch of whiners, now go back to work and leave POTUS ALONE!! , unpatriotic crazy leftist liberals who want to destroy our nation.

Actually, the biggest favor we can do us all is not to watch any major TV networks and pay no attention to the old man behind the curtain.

It's a pretty good sign, actually. They said they were going to hold off on the negativism for one night, but had to break their promise after Obama's speech. (And honestly, was it really worth it for THAT stale list of recycled talking points?)

Thank you John Kerry for picking Obama as the keynote speaker in 2004.

What RNC? I heard on MSNBC that it might not happen "because of Gustav."

The republicants suffered a severe head injury tonight. I think the DNC and the Obama campaign have been throttling their forces until after the convention. Joe Sixpack doesn't start paying attention until now. And now it's time to set the record straight.

Just be careful not to set them up for a bounce due to low expectations.

If they are selling a DVD of the Democratic Convention, I want it!

The Republicans are on. the. ropes.

Good luck beating back the guy who can sting like a butterfly and float like a bee.

Barack has given the Democrats their very own Muhammad Ali.

Bush has just been uninvited to the Republican National Convention!

McCain knows firsthand the terrors of war, probably better than Sen. Obama. Because of this, he will not go around looking for wars, but he also knows that sometimes War is the only option.
About the ad, John McCain's comment about the houses and economy are taken out of context. Senator McCain does not live in all those houses, and might even have relatives living there. When he said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, he didn't mean that everything is nice and rosy, but that the United States has the long term capacity to emerge out of this downturn stronger than before.
I dislike any time the comments of either Senator are taken out of context, including taking out of context Obama's vote on abortions that has been publicized recently.

The most frequent anti-Obama talking point I keep hearing is : " He's a great speaker but the fact is he's setting the public up for a huge let-down should he become president ."

A huge let-down ? We've had eight years of "huge let-down" . There is nothing, repeat NOTHING, that Obama could do that would surpass the let-down the world has experienced since Dubya was selected .
And you Hillary backers who say you'll vote for McCain ...... stay home. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, especially if you can't afford the health care .

Well, McCain's own comments and behavior don't jive well with the "not looking for war" claim. "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" and cigerettes are a way of "killing them [Iranians]" were two comments to name a few... And whether you feel McCain meant something else with the economy, a $4,999,999 income being considered middle class says otherwise...

McCain lies about "Russian aggression."
Obama lies about "Russian aggression."

Why is that?

McCain doesn't know shit.

He has proven to an unreliable narrator of his own life who can't be trusted on the issues, he's beholden to any corporate special interest that comes begging (can the man ever say no?), and he's totally indifferent to human suffering (bomb bomb bomb Iran - he probably relives his North Vietnam bombing career every night after dinner when he's nodding off in front of some John Wayne movie).

In short, not presidential material.

In any way.

GOP considers delaying convention

Tropical Storm Gustav is forecast to hit U.S. next week as hurricane

Republican officials said yesterday that they are considering delaying the start of the GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul because of Tropical Storm Gustav, which is on track to hit the Gulf Coast, and possibly New Orleans, as a full-force hurricane early next week.

The threat is serious enough that White House officials are also debating whether President Bush should cancel his scheduled convention appearance on Monday, the first day of the convention, according to administration officials and others familiar with the discussion.

For Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain, Gustav threatens to provide an untimely reminder of Hurricane Katrina. A new major storm along the Gulf Coast would renew memories of one of the low points of the Bush administration, while pulling public attention away from McCain's formal coronation as the GOP presidential nominee.

Senior Republicans said images of political celebration in the Twin Cities while thousands of Americans flee a hurricane could be disastrous. "Senator McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds, noting that the senator postponed announcing his presidential candidacy in 2000 because of the war in the Balkans. "We are monitoring the situation very closely."

A public relations challenge
Staging a convention during a major natural disaster would be a public relations challenge for either political party. But GOP officials say the damage could be especially heavy for their party, whose reputation was tarred by the Bush administration's bungling of Katrina and its aftermath in 2005.

A hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico could also cast unwelcome attention on the offshore oil rigs that McCain has championed as a solution to rising gasoline prices -- they are now being evacuated in the face of the coming storm.
..

I'm laughing so hard I can hardly think of an appropriate comment .. there are so many to choose from.

Maybe, "If the Republicans had long ago accepted the existence of Reality, She wouldn't be coming back to bite them in the ass now!"

powerful and inspiring speech tonight by Barack!

Republicans motivate their voters with fear

Democrats motivate with INSPIRATION

Republicans now have a lot to be afraid of..............; the refueled and positive inspiration of Democrats!

There is an absolute disconnect between this:

For Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain, Gustav threatens to provide an untimely reminder of Hurricane Katrina. A new major storm along the Gulf Coast would renew memories of one of the low points of the Bush administration, while pulling public attention away from McCain’s formal coronation as the GOP presidential nominee.

Senior Republicans said images of political celebration in the Twin Cities while thousands of Americans flee a hurricane could be disastrous.

And this:

“Senator McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis,” said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds, noting that the senator postponed announcing his presidential candidacy in 2000 because of the war in the Balkans. “We are monitoring the situation very closely.”

Wasn't McCain eating birthday cake with GW when Katrina hit?

I mean .. how are they going to spin that?

"McCain" and "sensitive" do not belong in the same sentence with each other.

The problem is the president of the United States does not control the economy..

these guys are the real reason mccain understands/looks for wars.you might remember these guys:

*charlie black....lobbyist......long GOP history
*rick davis........lobbyist..big lucrative firm
*phil gram.........ubs warburg,enron loopholes,mortgage
deregulation that has affected all of us directly/indirectly
*randy scheunemann...lobbyist...behind georgia/mccain
what do these guys have in common NEOCON agenda
warmongering

Why do we not hear about Cindy's half sister (she claims to be an only child) and why did McCain oppose release of the documents re MIA/POWs in Vietnam? Why is the dark skinned child always in the background, or in front of someone with very dark clothes?

Thanks for the link - I picked it up from one of the other threads & read it.

Right after the major combat ended either Medyedev or Putin said they figured Cheney was behind Saakashvili's decision to shell Tshkinvali.

I think Putin is spot-on; I've agreed with him before he said it!!

But I'd go one step further. It wasn't just a campaign trick to help McCain get elected. It was another effort by the Neocons to destabilize the region to ensure there will be plenty of conflict for them to continue to manipulate for their profit.

Poland rushed to initiate the "Missile Defense Shield" - a highly provocative move, but also sheer lunacy from a realistic perspective. The American Missile Shield is an enormous defense department boondoggle. It doesn't work, but it is an open ended project with unlimited spending potential.

Check out who is the Polish Minister of Defense who signed the deal - Sikorski.

Just before he went back to Poland to become the Minister of Defense he was a Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute - RIGHT WING AMERICAN THINK TANK.

Saakashvili - Columbia Law School, NY Lawyer, then Pres of Georgia.

Sikorski - American Enterprise Institute, then Poland' Minister of Defense.

Very tight little group rocking the boat - for profit.

Check out David Brooks' reaction to Obama's speech. Simply shameful.

McCain made a speech in New Orleans saying that he would be different from Bush, and would never let something like the Katrina response happen again. Yet, on the day that New Orleans was drowning, McCain and Bush were eating birthday cake.

That cannot be SPUN, it can only be COVERED UP. Which is the idea behind announcing his VP pick on Friday. New Orleans is being EVACUATED tomorrow at noon, to get out of the way of hurricane Gustav. The Republicans can't allow the images of New Orlean being evacuated to dominate the news cycle so close to the Repub. Convention. They have to put something else on the airwaves to compete with those images. A high schoolish SQUEE party over McCain's pick for VP might do the trick. (They're doing that because they have no choice, but they also run the risk of CONFLATING those two images in the public mind. *shrug* What else can they do?)

@ 29,

The president might not control the economy, but his policies sure in the hell can dramatically effect it.

I am fleshing out an argument that can encompass the magnitude of our collective despair. Maybe our predicament is sufficent to provide me the inspiration I need, in order to convey something that is devoid of accusations, but filled, instead, with observations that many of you can share.

My girlfriend and I just bought a home a little over two months ago. Just now, I was outside enjoying the cold air of New England thinking about the age of our home (built in the 1920's), along with the evident craftsmanship that went into piecing it together. This brought me to the realization that we don't strive for quality, in general, but rather, the MBA-inspired and CEO-approved term of productivity. I work for an IT company, whose products are obviously produced in Asia and the Pan-Asian handle. However, getting back to the bit about our home, am I the only one that thinks a great many of our companies are out to build the homes of today on the cheap, in order to make a lot of money ? Not only that, but it also goes without saying that those people involved with the process of building our homes and many other of our infrastructure projects are not given the conditions necessary to exercise their jobs in a manner where they can improve their craft to where they become, like during the Renaissance, masters in their field.

Nowadays, if you can save a company money, like our good friend Al Dunlap was with Sunbeam, you suddenly are rewarded by the board of directors with a massive salary and even bigger bonus... What have you done to ensure the long term survival of your firm, but most importantly, your people ? That is what I feel most of modern politicians don't grasp. Yes, the senior management of any large Fortune 500 company can donate vast amounts of money to your compaign, expecting that you vote in their favor come policy or bill drafting time. That said, what about the workers of those companies ? The collective purchasing power of that mass of people employed by those Fortune 500 companies has been diminishing for some time now (since Reagan).

I have no problem with you making a large sum from the stock options (as long as they are not illegaly back dated so that you can basically appear to have made the best financial desicion for yourself, with the benefit of hindsight), but what about also giving the workers a share in that productivity increase ? The software engineers, the welders, the mechanics, the doctors, the nurses, the teachers, and everyone else who spends a lifetime studying or learning to become great at what they do. Shouldn't all these people expect some kind of financial reward for their efforts ?

I hear many conservatives rail against the liberal agenda of sharing the wealth as being patently unjust, unfair and against market principles. However, did the market cause Bear Stearns to collapse or was it fraud (the latter is more like it, but those responsible might not be held accountable for years), in which case, there is always an easy excuse to whisk away the lasting and pervasive devastation that this collapse has wrought. I, for one, wouldn't mind scaling down from $100 Million a year to maybe $1 or $2 Million, because at what point does the greed that supposedly drove you to the top, also drown out the noble efforts of others that enabled you to accomplish your goals ?

I harken back to the argument that your fortune wasn't made out of thin air, but rather, you benefited from our systems in place, such as the public schools, the clean air you breathed along the way, the highways, the public servants that took your patent applications, etc. It's time that this idea of the market fixing all our worries was exposed for the fraud that it is. I know, certain special circumstances have prevented from that theory from being fully expressed.

I have only one thing to say about this. My parents escaped a communist country on foot and hiked the mountains of Italy to seek refuge in the west. Sure, as a now staunch neo-conservative high school acquaintance of mine told me about the noble idea of communism at time, it's a great idea, but never realizing that once applied with people, certain variables shifted the end result dramatically. I just wish we could all be a little better informed about our government, its failings and how all of us might be best suited to pitch in.

But returning to the idea that quality appears to have left our daily pursuit for productivity, leads, sales and many other financially-measured motivations, can we incorporate other elements like sustainability and quality into the model ? I wonder.

Cheers,
k

Check out David Brooks' reaction to Obama's speech. Simply shameful.

He probably wrote the reaction before the speech.....reads like it.

I was sitting in a local bar watching Barack on the television. Next to me was a Rupublican who won't vote for Obama because he thinks Barack will raise taxes on people like him. We couldn't agree on much, except that Dubya has been a disaster. When Barack took the stage and started speaking, I said "It's a wonderful thing that a young black man can be nominated to the highest seat in the land. We've come a long way as a country." The gentleman next to me lifted his pint and said "Amen to that brother!"

It was an inspirational moment.

that's a broad brush stroke....the entire economy maybe so.....if your halliburton/kbr stockholder those no-bid contracts helped your personal economy. there are many other examples..it just depends regulations, taxes of course i'm one that DOESn't think the market is perfect like some do.

DENVER -- John McCain's campaign has released its response to Barack Obama's speech here tonight. The statement, attributed to spokesman Brian Rogers, reads:

Tonight, Americans witnessed a misleading speech that was so fundamentally at odds with the meager record of Barack Obama. When the temple comes down, the fireworks end, and the words are over, the facts remain: Senator Obama still has no record of bipartisanship, still opposes offshore drilling, still voted to raise taxes on those making just $42,000 per year, and still voted against funds for American troops in harm's way. The fact remains: Barack Obama is still not ready to be President.

my opinion is that this response is weak and not true.
obama wants a compromise on the off-shore drilling
it's a good move because the (R) won't compromise so they won't get what they want.
the taxes are wrong also i posted a graph if you haven't seen it.
i'm surprised people want to believe this but it's part of the culture war....they want to believe it so not to be part of something different.

I don't say McCain didn't suffer, obviously he did as a POW, but he is not the only one in the universe, and it is not an excuse neither evidence of opinions. being under war, I support war in some contexts when there are no other options left, but I think it is not a joke, or appropriate for a song.

McCain showed well beyond doubt that he is like Bush or even worst, cares nothing about diplomacy, at least Bush tried to see the "soul" in Putin, McCain even before Georgia invasion, he was talking about kicking Russia out of G8. whatever you think about Russia, you should try diplomacy with them and not lecturing them or provoking them or threatening them, they are not kids, they are a sovereign nation too with plenty of nuclear weapons, does McCain think it is appropriate to make more enemies to the US when the War On Terror even haven't been won? Do you think it is wise to make more enemies?

Can anyone tell me the need for the missile defense system in eastern Europe in a rush way disregarding Russia concerns? I know Russia is bad, but why not try to engage them into diplomacy instead of going ahead with your plannings anyway.

No, the problem is that the POTUS doesn't care about the economy...same with McPOWPOWPOW

Even if he does what can he do about it? Its a market economy..

yeah rrrright! hint: taxes, budget, international trade agreements/deals, spending, wars, energy policy, minimizing disasters' effects, immigration laws, reputation overseas....

Maybe the president can't change it

good entry i was trying to make the same point you did a better job.

it's important to wear your contrarian hat at least for a short term. obama has a high emotional intelligence.
it's my opinion this is something mccain doesn't have.
i believe biden is very aware of this mccain characteristic. this is something critics don't understand.
bush is another one that DOESn't have it. bush is almost always defensive.

I just looked at Michelle Malkin's blog to see what garbage she might be spilling out there about Obama's speech.

I guess I'll have to wait until Friday to see because there's no garbage on her trashy web site since 10:28 AM Thursday morning, when she's got the usual crap like "Next, the Obama thugs came for Stanley Kurtz."

Oh, I take that back....over on the right hand corner is a picture of Obama in a toga and a caption that says, "He cometh; the money tree shaketh." And the comments....usual right wing lunacy crap....raise our taxes, "b hussein," "elitist," blah, blah, blah.

Repugs must be shocked out of their gourdes tonight. If they can't squeeze out one iota of praise for how the convention went, one iota of how good Obama's speech was, they just need to shut the "f" up.

It's all about profit and politics.

First, it's provocative of Russia. If peace breaks out a lot of "American" military-industrial corporations will stop making obscene profits, and creating fear of Russia by provoking Russia will be very profitable for them.

Second, the missile defense system doesn't work (shh!) but it is a VERY expensive ongoing military industrial project with an open ended budget and no time limit for completion, so by making it "necessary" the military industrial profiteers guarantee their project will continue to be funded.

And third, it's election season, and McCain's perceived "strength" is foreign policy - specifically, talking tough to get his supporters all worked up.

But - as you question implies - it is an act of insanity if world peace and prosperity are your goals.

Is this legit? Or just joking around? I feel sorry for McCain. Having Bush there reminds people of how similar they are. Not having Bush there makes people think the McCain camp doesn't want to draw comparisons. What's worse is that they have no choice but to schedule the president in prime time. I just love the fuck out of this.

Historically, over the centuries, including the post 1917 October revolution communist period, the only "diplomacy' they ever understood is the FIST, and an iron one.The fmr KBG boys, now ruling fascist Russia, are like W - never saw the combat and death it brings. They are worse (more arrogant and more stupid, if possible) than the old guard of Brezhnev, Andropov, etc. So, the idea of system, even if will be never built should sufficiently keep the red barons in check for a while. Russia/Putin is marching for LEBENSRAUM, cannot be allowed any Anschluss. Obama gets it. Russians have the full pants b/c of him as well - that's why the attack on Georgia now, , during the US 'interregnum'.

My husband and I laughed out loud at the commentator-hacks trying to pour cold water on a great convention and failing to dampen the enthusiasm... thank goodness for C-Span so you could actually hear what the speakers were saying. My favorite was the retired nurse that used to vote Republican, only not this time!

This is blatant Soviet propaganda by Novosti (News) agency, the ONLY Soviet press agency, ever -since post 1917 the communist govt propaganda arm. The only govt newspaper since Soviet times: PRAVDA (truth). The well known saying in Russian and many other Euro languages: "there never was any news in PRAVDA, nor any truth in NOVOSTI".

I almost posted the same sentiment about the retired nurse.

She - and maybe a couple of dozen "ordinary citizens" like her - were the "glue" that held the whole convention together. They provided the reality check that brought all the high-minded words right back down to the ground.

I watched all of all four days on c-span and heard from posters here how badly the MSM talked over and chopped up the major speeches, and heard that they completely left out precisely these "ordinary citizen" moments.

I was inspired by the convention.

And yes, that nurse - "I'm a lifelong Republican. I voted for Nixon. I voted for Reagan. I voted for both Bushes. But I can't take four more years .."

You can destroy any dumbass argument for a missile defense system in europe with two words: PATRIOT MISSILES. We have had them for 27 years. It has been 17 years since they were PROVEN WORTHLESS in an actual WAR. The only things they've ever shot down in combat have been ALLIED AIRCRAFT. And...we're STILL spending money on them! Thus, it's a PERFECT example of the
