Damn straight. Every time I get back to the States from Europe I always have to readjust to how damn UGLY everything is. Billboards, telephone poles, strip malls.. Total dominance of consumer culture, automobile culture, etc.
On one occasion I was hit with a thought that's stayed with me: We're a society built by the lowest bidder. :-/ Crass, rational capitalism.
Of course, when things DO look good, it's often because we go to the complete opposite extreme: Planned, gated communities. Disneyesque imitations of real life. (Or even worse.. tacky imitations of some stereotype "European" town!)
Reminds me of Palermo, in Sicily. Everything built post-war there is a complete mess. Entire suburbs sprung up without parks or schools or city planning. It's not completely dissimilar. They didn't have regulation either. Not because of a hands-off ideology, but due to overwhelming corruption.
It's all terribly depressing. The lack of actual public places where people can get a dose of real life outside a sheltered suburban existance otherwise restricted to shopping malls and other private surrogates for real town centers. And the way we've made ourselves utterly dependent on cars, to the detriment of both the environment and our health.
Since she opened the discussion with her snide remarks on the stump, much has occurred nationally to shine the spotlight back into her face regarding her "Secessionist Pals" to whom she sent a video encouraging them to "keep up the good work" both in 2006 and 2008. This Goose's Moose is cooked now.
Todd, of the sleeping with the enemy fame, was a card-carrying member himself through 2002 when it determined that it might not look too good for him to be a member of such a transparently "Anti-American" group like the Alasks Secessionist Party. Unfortunately for Todd, he's the one who has successfully cooked the Moose's chances of ever seeing the White House.
Imagine having actual "self-proclaimed secessionists" occupying the White House? Unbelievable that these frauds and the King Fraudster, McKeating, would select someone so pathetically unqualified and an "anti-american" to boot.

Just read some of the post to Attywood's article. The GOP really has become the party of the lunatic fringe. The types of people that post that kind of hatred are EXACTLY the type of people that blow up Federal buildings, kill abortion doctors and beat up anyone that doesn't agree with them.
There was a time when outright hate letters mailed to editorial pages of newspapers would initiate FBI investigations of the senders. This should also apply to the web. The destruction of our legal system, the perversion of justice and the expanding imbalance in the application of the law will, in my opinion, be THE lasting legacy of this Administration.
