Just one example of right wing radio at it's worst:

If this idiot is concerned about what little vote fraud there is, he ought to be screaming about election fraud, which is much more common.

This guy is nuttier than "Baby-killer" Burk.

Desperate McCain Campaign to Launch the ULTIMATE Negative Ad
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=3767

Less than six hours after my Obama sticker went on the car, it was 'keyed'. Nice folks, eh?

I had a ribbon sticker on my car that said God Bless Our Troops/God Forgive George Bush.

It had been there for over a year. My son, who is on his way to Iraq, for the second time, gave it to me.

Two weeks ago, someone stole it.

These people are desperate and have no qualms about vandalism or any other type of crime.

For the record. The loop on the ribbon was around my antenna..so it wouldn't be so easy to take. They had to work for it.

Someone had a little anger management issue, which is pretty much standard with the Republicans that I personally know. It's a shame.

I've had an anti-Republican sticker on my car for 3 years, and more recently an Obama sticker. Never have had an issue (although a few compliments). You must have some a-hole neighbors!

Many years back, when I was fresh out of college, I had an old car which sported a George McGovern bumper sticker (he ran for President against Richard Nixon, who was still being investigated prior to being fired/resigning from the Presidency) and a second sticker which said "God is Dead and He's in my Trunk".

My mother's car was in the shop and I let her have mine for the day.

At 4:30 PM, outside her regional office building, seen by multitudes, she was detained by a Duval County, FL policeman who kept her over an hour while he searched the car, her purse, and the public records and finally had to let her go as a clean and non-suspicious individual.

RE-thugs, indeed!

Cop: I don't like what your car says...and I have a badge to prove it!

it's sad that one of the major parties in American politics is so Anti-American. And they will try question my love for America because I won't rollover as easily as they will. I don't rollover on command like the Republicans do. I don't allow my government or their corporate media to tell me how I should feel about what my country is doing in my name. I am a real American because I believe that America is better then the crap the Repugs have done. And I believe if it wasn't for Republicans (and religion in general) we would have the freedoms our founding father wanted us to have.

sticker was McGovern's! Heady days.

Ike

All in favor of more offshore drilling, say Aye!

I had a discussion today with the elderly father of a friend about offshore drilling.
I'm from Biloxi. As a kid I used to go to Dauphin Island with my family quite often. About 15 years ago, I went there with my husband, and we could not wade in the water because of the small droplets of oil that were visible everywhere.

Friend's father really believes that things have gotten better in the last 15 years, even though he has not seen it himself. He was a union man all his life, and at one time was a Democrat. He started listening to Rush Limbaugh about 20 years ago, and that was the end of that.

This man is not stupid. He is just completely convinced. (and maybe a little bit racist, but not as bad as Limbaugh himself.)

It's called brainwashed.

Completely agree with you. It's just a good example of brainwash, but some people can't understand that (mostly in cases when it concerns them).

eye-opening, and best article I have read in a long time.

Check out the New Yorker endorsement:

http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2008/10...

It's an article that needs to be read by everyone during the election cycle. No doubt about it. Thank you for the link.

Holy.

Crap.

He should be called what he really is: a traitor.

Don

Sorry I meant don't worry your investments, life savings, pensions are in good hands.

Obama might be willing to take the gloves off. His campaign has now said that Gone InSane's plan of attack will "lead to the political equivalent of mutual assured destruction: fire your big weapon at your own peril."

They are now hinting to the public that if InSane really wants to bring up the dirty businessman Rezko and the unrepentant criminal Ayers, they'll be willing to bring up the dirty businessman Keating and unrepentant criminal G. Gordon Liddy.

I kinda like the warning shot. It's kinda like my typing, "I won't type the word 'fuck' unless provoked."

May I add that I wouldn't mind a little coverage of Palin's witch doctor/hunter friend as long as the Obama camp will be responding to attacks.

the fuck you won't!

Oliver North – chief coordinator of and negotiator in an underground syndicate to supply Iran, a sworn enemy, with missiles in the 1980s during the Reagan administration. North was indicted and convicted on felonies related to these illegal arms sales. Later, as a Christmas present to all involved in the scandal, subsequent president George H.W. Bush issued presidential pardons to all indicted.

http://tiny.cc/EVyQX

http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1889.html

Oliver North is also on record as admitting he had developed a “fairly good relationship” with Manuel Noriega, who later was convicted of cocaine trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering in the United States; convicted of money laundering in France; and is awaiting prison in Panama for murder and human rights violations.

Oliver North has also been associated with drug trafficking.

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB113...

John McCain supported Oliver North in his bid for senate in 1994, and later these two peas in a pod sealed the reach around when North endorsed McCain's run for president.

http://tiny.cc/Ebx31

The questions are: how deep are the connections between Oliver North and associates and John McCain? John McCain appears to gain nothing from this unseemly alliance, so what lies beneath the surface?

Give this poster some applause! Oliver North should have been executed for treason. Instead, he and fellow so-called conservative Gordon Liddy land plush media jobs.
Oliver North--indeed, all the North tribe--is a legacy of erstwhile RNC vice-chair Carroll Reece, whose tenure in that position was cut short by his arrest for public sexual activity with a young man. Rethugs are closet, Devilcrats are open, and personally, I'd rather have them out where we can keep an eye on them.
The North bunch includes a former county chair arrested for child molestation. He was acquitted with representation from his high-priced law practice but that same practice has one former state rep in prison, a second state rep in "The Practice" resigned, I believe, while under investigation, and a third rep (my cousin) declined to run again, and is now himself under investigation for alleged misdeeds in a nonprofit.
The county chair is now a practicing alcoholic. I know of one murder he committed and paid off the coroner's office to rule it a suicide. Did it to get a piece of rental property.
Second Reece--John Reece Roth of Knoxville, convicted of handing out military secrets to foreign nationals. Nobody at UTenn or his contract business seemed to give a hoot until he tried to hire an Iranian national. Reeces are married into the Ali/Aley/Alley family, reputedly Iranian descent.
Family addict implicated old Carroll in cocaine and heroin trafficking but too many GOP in FBI.
Oh yes, do you want to see my nice antique picture, shot by North and Oswald Photography out of Ohio? Don't know if this is relevant to any but it sure is suspicious...

The Obama camp shouldn't stop there either. How about McCain's relationship with G. Gordon Liddy?...that's McCain's Ayers. If he wants to play the guilt by association game , how about his role in the Abramoff scandal?

And Caribou Barbie should shut her moose-hole about Ayers as well. Lets see an ad and a surrogate talk about first dud's membership in the radical anti-US AIP ?

that she would wish never to happen.

Thank you! I was looking for it, but it was so subliminally presented-- right before my eyes. Love it!!

That's terrifying. Two bible thumpers who believe that dinosaurs roamed the earth with Jesus. Welcome to the Theocracy that was once America.

Wiccans beware. It could possibly be Salem Mass all over again if these two are in power, but on a MUCH wider scale.

I especially like how you have the music club set up. It's easy to search for a particular song or artist.

Most excellent and well done!

Are you scared of a girl?!!!

Look! I think we have a troll! LOL :)

Been lookin' for you, good to see you're here.

Aside from the obvious sexism of your comment, the answer is no. But what I am scared of is a person who is totally unqualified to be President with the Nu-CLE-ar codes... After 8 years of being scared of one Joe-sixpack, I'd sure hate to trade him on on a pair of "Mavericks" that shouldn't be anywhere near the button.

Bush (L) shakes hands with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson as he walks from the White House to the Treasury Building, after the House passed the $700 billion financial rescue legislation in Washington, October 3, 2008.

Bush: I am going to be so rich I can BUY Paraguay.

Paulson: I'm just going to buy Alaska.

Bush: I can't believe they bought that shit again

Paulson: You're the man, sir. I just did the dirty work.

I am answering to ZOO here, because I have to stop logging in everywhere I go, but I have a different opinion of 'redistribution of wealth', and am all in favor of it.

That is - not taxing some and giving the money to others, but redistributing company profits, giving more to the people who worked for it rather than the executives who believe in 'trickle-down'. Seems not much is trickling down past the CEOs, CFOs, COOs, presidentss and chairman of the board, not even mentioning golden parachutes, even to those who performed miserably, because it was written into their contract when they were hired.

'CEOs have seen increases in their earnings at a rate far greater than that of the average worker. In 1965, U.S. CEOs at major companies made 24 times a worker's pay-by 2004, CEOs earned 431 times the pay of an average worker ...'

ref

Yes, while they lay off American workers and hire illegals.
Hiring preference for illegals is itself recessionary. Americans spend their money in America. Mexicans et al send large chunks of their wages south of the border, and another chunk eastward to the Vatican.
Combine this with layoff foreclosures and bankruptcies, the domino-effect bank failures, and stock market drops from declines in oil purchases related to lack of work and increased gas prices, and the CEO hogs no longer can "trickle down" and socialize their losses while still increasing profits and stock prices--
So they get a big bailout bill. The CEO's and CFO's of most of these major companies should be put on the road, and without any parachutes, golden or otherwise.

It's going to get ugly. These tips can keep a lot of people sane when the low information voters try to overpower the conversation.

Reversal in Palin Case

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: October 5, 2008

ANCHORAGE (AP) — Seven Alaska state employees have reversed course and agreed to testify in an abuse-of-power investigation against Gov. Sarah Palin.

Ms. Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, is the focus of a legislative inquiry into whether she abused her office by firing the public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan. Mr. Monegan says he was dismissed because he would not fire the governor’s former brother-in-law.

Lawmakers subpoenaed seven state employees to testify in the inquiry, but they challenged those subpoenas. A judge rejected that challenge last week. Because of that ruling, the Alaska attorney general, Talis Colberg, says, the employees have decided to testify.

Kurds. Our bail-out is continuing to screw up other
global markets. Rove already called it for Obama. Palin
runs out of ideas.

Sorry, new interface. I'll get it right eventually. Ike's led to over half a million tons of spilled oil.

Anyone got a response to this?

What do the top ten cities with the highest poverty rate all have in common? Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961; Buffalo , NY (2nd) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1954; Cincinnati, OH (3rd)...hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1984; Cleveland, OH (4th)...hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1989; Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor; St. Louis, MO (6th)....hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1949; El Paso, TX (7th) has never had a Republican mayor; Milwaukee, WI (8t h)...hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1908; Philadelphia, PA (9th)...hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1952; Newark, NJ(10th)...hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1907. Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.' It is the disadvantaged who habitually elect Democrats --- yet are still disadvantaged. Opinion: The Disadvantaged remain disadvantaged because they are looking for a Liberal Democratic Government to give them something, when all they have to do is work for it. (How can a person be 5th Generation disadvantaged in this Country?)

Your mom: "The Disadvantaged remain disadvantaged because they are looking for a Liberal Democratic Government to give them something, when all they have to do is work for it."

Did the banks work for their $700 billion?

They had to pocket as much as they could before they qualified for any of the $700,000,000,000.

There are several ways to respond, depending on how much your audience is willing to listen.

You could talk about the nature of cause and effect, and how the correlations your mom offered don't necessarily show any sort of cause. After all, it could very well be that the last time those cities had Republican mayors was the time that they were plunged into poverty -- you know, like the Republicans are doing to the whole country right now -- and that Democrats have been working on cleaning up the mess ever since. But that kind of conversation probably wouldn't fly with people who believe such silly e-mails in the first place.

In the alternative, there are far more damning correlations to be found in the world of political statistics. The economy demonstrably does better under Democratic presidents. The blue states have far better standards of living and far lower rates of teen pregnancies, STDs, etc. than the red states. Progressive countries in Europe, such as in the Scandinavian region, have far better standards of living than more conservative counterparts. Google provides easy access to such numbers, but again, even that requires a willingness to listen that might exceed the innate abilities of those gullible to e-mails that so easily confirm their already-developed prejudices.

So, possibly, the best route is to shoot these sentiments down in an easily digestible form. Maybe get Socratic:

"You say that all these people have to do to escape poverty is work, but would you hire any of them to do a job for you if they asked?"

Upon hearing the reasons for not hiring them, which will be myriad, "I see. And if they have no skills or education, how exactly are they going to get skills or an education if they're in poverty?"

Upon hearing that they're just unwilling to work at all, say, "Then what difference does it make to their living situation that they don't have Republican governments? Look, a lot of people are willing to work if they can just get a leg up. The Democratic Party, imperfect as it is, is the one willing to at least meet them half way -- give them access to an education and skills. It'd be a lot easier for that to happen in Republicans like you weren't constantly bad mouthing them, and getting in their way every time a sensible program could help just a little."

So there is no possibility in your mind that the racist Republicans in the State Legislatures, the State Houses and the Congress had anything whatsoever to do with this?

You must be joking!

Orlying to yourself.

my response would be simply, correlation is not the same as causation.

So don't waste your time. On the off chance she does, remind her that it was the Republican administration took America from surplus to deficit, from relative peace to two wars and from respected world leader to despised global bully.

Perhaps throw in that while these cities are poorest, of states the poorest are also the reddest.

Finish off by explaining that opinions are merely opinions but facts are facts and the fact of the matter is you can't "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" if you can't afford boots...

I just posted my new response to any spam below, but here it is again.

A really good friend just told me the other day that his friend has a friend (none of whom will be named) who knows certain people and they told me that Barack Obama's birth certificate was made on a polyneurane lithanol paper. I'm sure you know, but I'll spell it out anyway... for the less educated on an email forward list. That paper is composed of two chemicals that don't actually exist on this planet.

This explains being the top of your class at Harvard, mastering such tough subjects as a Constitutional Law, international affairs and ecomonics. This explains the "unseen" father. This explains growing up in such as spiritual, yet remote place like Hawaii and moving to Chicago to "community organize." Community organize? Have you seen "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"?

Barack Obama is OBVIOUSLY an alien hybrid sent to the destroy the planet, a la seasons 8 and 9 of the X-Files. Now STOP SENDING LAME-ASS FORWARDS! I forwarded the link to every one of my family & friends.

Along with the link to the New Yorker endorsement.

I'll bet most just hit delete. For most, their minds are made up and god almighty couldn't change 'em.

Pity, we're mostly preaching to the choir.

Don't count on it. I remember a friend of mine telling me received hundreds of Republican letters in the mail every year back in the 1970s and she knew people who opened similar letters and read them and believed them even though, at best, they were full of half truths.

Eventually one of your friends will read something you send them and it may register somewhere deep inside. It may in fact help them open their mind.

You never know what might happen next. :)

for a nephew in a MFA program at UCLA film school. He seems persuadeable and actually listens, goes to the web, checks things for himself. Loves some site called "Urban Conservative". Perhaps I should check it out for myself. His vote is, as yet, undecided. So, some hope. :)

OMG. I'm in a production of Oz right now. As The Gatekeeper too!

creepy.

David Sirota has an excellent perspective on the nature of Authoritarian Capitalism, and how it is quickly becoming the dominant framework of the 21st Century. I think it's especially appropriate given the unconstitutional process by which this bailout was passed.

Paul Waldman has a great rant on the Republicans' Politics of Contempt. I love Waldman's writings and insights.

Sewage Workers of America union?

Question C&Lers, I was thinking we should put togther a 527 to attack McCain and Palin's strengths and weakness. I.E. showing McCain was an incompetent soldier, and Palin's a shitty Mother, while both are whores for big business.
Any idea where to start more than gathering a shitload of money?

Well, there is always being born rich. Don't leave that possibility out.

OMFG that is friggin hilarious!!

It could be the prunes or all those smears and skids on his Depends.

Cindy forgot to tell Johnny to change his undies. Phew, get offa that stage, somethin' stinks. lol

MsJoanne, how was your trip to Germany? Are you back?

Like the new digs... Congrats!!!

Why did C&L take a large step backward with this new site? The comments architecture is way feeble. Yeah, the new look is nice, but it seems as though you're deliberately trying to drive down your comment traffic. Revisions should improve things, not make usage more difficult. Having to manually enter "allowed html tags" is SO 1998.

Commenting was far more intuitive in the old format.
The look is very nice & there's nothing wrong w/shaking things up every now & again, but as Bobby G said, the format is "SOOO 1998" (extra "O"s by me).
Especially irksome is being redirected to a new page to enter comments instead of it simply being at the bottom of the main story page. That allowed you to scroll up when typing so you could review the conversation & be like "hey, that's a good point i could elaborate on."
Plus you had a great GUI for the most common HTML tags, dropping that was a li'l "elitist".

Agree

This pretty much somes Palin up. Remember, take the L out of Palin and you'll be left with pain.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7trIpspUILg

And if you substitute a "p" for the second "c" in McCain, you get McPain.

A Podunk "journalist" named Billy May wrote some racist tripe that an LA Times columnist called a "spoof on Obama's platform." http://www.latimes.com/wireless/avantgo/la-na...

To read May's article, you have to download a PDF, in which his e-mail address is noted as billyleemay@yahoo.com.

Please let him know what you think about his hilarious "Clarified Platform of Barack Hussein Obama" zingers such as "Homosexual Marriage: Raise taxes and coddle sexual perverts. Drug Crisis: Raise taxes to pay for free drugs for Obama's inner-city political base. 2nd Amendment: ...will only apply to gang-bangers, illegal aliens, Islomo-Fascist terrorists.... etc. Oh yeah, there's lots more sick stuff.

This asshole, Billy May, more than deserves his 15 minutes of fame and all of the ridiculing that goes with it.

We (the people, government, and media) should not be allowed to have a conversation about an economic meltdown without adding the price of this war in the same conversation as the bailout and mortgage crisis.

We also need to start holding the mainstream and not so mainstream media accountable for telling the truth and that includes lying through omission. There is a buried CBS news report that we are losing military veterans to suicide at over 100 per week. I have yet to hear about this without exhaustive research from any major news source. If the voting public knew about this nothing could get McCain elected. The reality is if a lot of what is really going on (economy, war, terrorism, etc...) we could be talking about a Democratic landslide and criminal charges being drawn up on most of the Bush administration.

We have had more Americans killed by bee stings over the last 20 years than in terrorist attacks in this country. Why are we not having a war on bees or a war on automobile accidents, a war on accidental bathtub deaths? Etc. etc...

Some say that the bees are disappearing. Maybe they have been renditioned too.
