Rudy Giuliani is rooting for the Red Sox!

BOSTON --In an act of baseball blasphemy, Yankee die-hard Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday he's pulling for the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series over the Colorado Rockies.

I'm rooting for the Red Sox," the Republican presidential contender said in response to a question, sparking applause at the Boston restaurant where he was picking up a local endorsement.

"I'm an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets," he said. "Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn't because I'm loyal to New York."...read on

This is baseball sacrilege! Maybe all these debates with Mitt Romney has rubbed off. I wonder how Randy Levine, (the embittered president of the Yankees who formerly worked for Rudy and has been receiving a lot of criticism for forcing Joe Torre out as manager) will explain this to Steinbrenner? They have practically built a shrine to Giuliani in the Bronx whenever he shows up to a game and now he's rooting for the Red Sox to win it all.

Steinbrenner treats him like royalty in the Bronx and Rudy knows how competitive the two teams are, so this is shocking. I mean, no true Yankee fan would ever root for Boston and visa versa. It's been called the best rivalry in sports for a reason. I have a ton of Red Sox friends and we always have a good time when the teams play, (It is just a game) but I tell you this is one flop I thought he'd never take and I hope the stadium faithful let him have it when he shows up next season....

So 'The Ghoul' is a flip-floppin' traitor....Have I got that right?

He's probably still chapped that he got booed twice (once during "God Bless America") at Yankee Stadium the last time he was there.

Well Boston fans rooted for the Yankees once..... In 2001 that's why they lost ;)

Peace

I'm a democrat and love this blog site, but what does that have to do with politics?

Oh, when will the dullards realise that we Americans are given sports by The Oligarchs to dull our outrage and conceal the reality of our misery.

I'm a Yankee fan, diehard. Rudy's a phony. If he was a Yankee fan he'd wish for the Red Sox plane to go down over the Rocky Mountains. I'm serious!

Wooo boy!!!
He better hope he wasn't in earshot of any New Yorkers!!! I've done heard tell folks up there don't take kindly to such a betrayal!!!

Jackass could not figure a way to weave 9-11 in his answer and took a header.

christ, how terrible. any yankee fan ought to want his head on a pike. thats like the former mayor of san francisco saying hes pulling for the dallas cowboys to win the title or something. i know it doesnt have anything to do with the kind of job he would do as president, but I wouldnt be able to let something like that slide.

Ok, let’s get real; the best rivalry in sports is Bears/Packers.

I guess it's an unwritten rule or something but I usually root for the team that knocked my team out. My rationale being that if they beat my team they better be damn good. If the team that beat mine loses it means my team was really bad, right?

Guiliani is a total fuck no matter what team he roots for.

Um, he knows the Mets are from New York, right?

I guess you just haven't heard yet, but Giuliani is running for President.

Mike,
If you're here on any kind of a regular basis, you know there's always a late night music link, and other non political discussions. Kind of like all work and no play, don't you think?

OMFG... this is his worst flip-flop ever! It's like always rooting for Ohio State and then root for Michigan one year because they're going to the Rose Bowl.

I live in Boston and I have one thing to say:

F*ck baseball.

I'm trying to care ....

Nope.

Nothing.

The only thing a real Yankee fan roots for regarding the Red Sox is a bus crash. The comment does show how easily Rudy will sell-out what he cares for to get what he wants.

I think Giuliani is probably the worst possible canidate to be our next president. But this is a good baseball stance. I have no love for the Colorado Rockies, but as a National League fan (Go Cubs Go) want them to win to represent the National League. Unlike most other professional sports, the American and National Baseball Leagues have different rules and customs yet compete for the same championship. I am not a national league fan just because I am a cubs fan, but because I feel it is the better way to play the game. Pitchers should have to bat. managers should have to manage. So, this does not happen very often, but I must disagree with the connection made by this post. And I understand the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, but I think someone who really appreciates the game as something bigger than any team would recognize this position. paz a la gente, viva la revolucion, hasta la victoria. ps- watch Ken Burns' 9 innings of baseball.

Mike Archer @ 4:

He was in Boston seeking supporters. So he was claiming allegiance to red sox. Had he been in Denver he would have claimed allegiance to the yankees and flatly stated that he would never support any other team.

Pandering for votes = politics. Like the I Love God debate the repubs had for the x-tian fundie group.

The elites are appeasing the plebes with games!

They've been doing this since Roman times!

Where's the outrage? You're all being duped.

Guess Whinespender will revoke those Season Tix for next year, huh?

In other news, there's a war going on, and the Democrats continue to still fund it, despite the fact that 80% of Americans want them to STOP.

Mike Archer @ 4:

I'm a democrat and love this blog site, but what does that have to do with politics?

It's clear evidence of the man's deficient character. We don't want blind loyalty, but no loyalty proves his sleaze factor in pandering. I'm not even a sports fan, but there's no way in a high stakes game I would ever choose to support a rival over my home team.

The Democrats have confirmed another neoCon stooge for the bench. This country is soooo over, the Democrats are complicit in the takeover.

Dick Durbin is sponsoring a bill to use tax dollars to pay for illegals to go to college. Interesting, millions of legal citizens can't afford to go to college, but somehow, if people have figured out how to break the law, enter the country illegally, and forge enough documents to stay here, they get REWARDED with college educations.

the neoCons throw all our money into wars, rebuilding infrastructure for other countries, the Dems want to throw all our money to foreign people entering the country illegally. What a great government.

Considering the mountains of reasons his presidency would be god-awful for our country, this really just doesn't seem that important to me. Of course I am neither a NYC fan nor a Boston fan, so maybe that's why it doesn't strike me as big.

Well, that's jinxed it, there goes the series for the Sox. Happily, we know it was just a moment of pander and not to be taken seriously. I don't even want him in the same fan base with me. Yuck.

I wonder if this will get the same play as Hillary's comment about always being a Yankee fan?

Wow!. This is truly shocking, and quite a revelation. No wonder it is getting so much media attention. I am glad that the American people are getting to hear about this very important revelation. Without the mass coverage of it, the American voters might never have learned about this unique case of a national political candidate behaving like a national political candidate. Stay tuned folks for an upcoming media revelation about the sun setting tonight.

Let me get this straight... everyone on the left side of the fence has been upset at the Republicans for concentrating on non-presidential aspects of the race (gay fictional characters, Moveon.org outrage, etc.), right?

So why in the world are we concentrating on what team Rudy Giuliani is rooting for in the World Series? He's a politician so of course he's going to flip-flop. This is a non-issue, folks. Let's concentrate on the important stuff, shall we?

Besides, as a New Yorker, I can tell you, if the Yankees aren't in the Series then the series doesn't count...

As I told my father, if Rudi's cheering for Boston, I'm cheering for Colorado. Go Rockies!

Perhaps.Perhaps not.The latest CNN poll says....A shot rang out as the pollster was about to report the results."It was , it was,uh!"His body went limp before he could utter the all important results.

I am a diehard yankee fan and can't see myself ever rooting for the red sox (or rude fooliani) though ol' timers have told me that traditionally red sox fans would root for the yankees and vice versa when their respective team get knocked out of contention. Call it American League East pride (though this rivalry has gotten really bitter over the last ten years and changed this sentiment)....

May some red socks get mixed with ghouliani's white laundry.

More to the point, no Bostonian would ever accept the support of a New York jag-off like Guliani.

been a yankees fan since 1949, when i was 10 yrs of age. my father was a giants fan and we had some heated discussions. he would never go to yankee stadium no matter what the reason. gotta agree with the sentiment tho i would only wish that the red sox pitchers arms freeze up and the batters swing like rusty gates. god i hate them

So much for New York being up for grabs in a Clinton/Giuliani matchup. What an idiot. He gave up a state that was possibly competitive for him for a state that will never be competitive for him.

This was purely to jinx the Sox. Think about it - the Sox are favored to win their 7th MLBCS. That means that while the Yankees won 4 under Rudy, the Sox will have won 2 under Mumbles. The Sox would make a big statement if they win - that 2004 was not a fluke or due to luck. Rudy is trying to jinx the Sox. But the Sox are Rudy-proof.

From a Coloradan that makes two strikes against you, Rude-ee.

GO ROCKS!!

Hayduke @ 55:

And anyone really cares about this because.....?

The world still revolves around New York. We know it should be London. But Murdoch wouldn't allow that.

Keep in mind, Richardson tried to get away with supporting both the Sox and the Yanks when he was interviewed on MtP, so we Dems can't really claim moral high ground here.

In Europe, Yankees caps have become a fashion icon - you see them everywhere, but presumably only about 10% of the people wearing them even know that it's a 'honkbal' team. They probably also assume that I'm just insane when I wander the streets of Amsterdam, muttering 'Yankees suck' at them...

We don't need Rudy to be a Red Sox Fan, or A Presnit!

We don't need Rudy!

There he goes again, shunning the Christian Fundies! It's Gods game now, haven't you heard.

You're dead to me, Rudy.

Now here's a topic most fat, moronic Americans can wrap their tiny brains around...who is Rudy going to root for? Right up there with, will Britney get her kids back?

And people wonder why the US has rapidly become a pathetic joke to the rest of the world.

DS,
Your comment brings back a warm fuzzy feeling for me. The last time the Yankees were in the Series, they lost 4-2 to the Florida Marlins. I can tell you that as a Marlins fan who was at the ESPN Sport Zone in Times Square on the Saturday night we won the series, the feelings I had were way up there. Nothing better than being in NYC the night the Yankees lost the SEries. The Sports Zone had a funereal quality to it, it was incredible. And the Marlins pitcher that night? None other than Josh Beckett, who will be starting for the Red Sox tonight.
Sure, the Marlins suck now, but still, our WS championship is more recent than whenever the last time the Yankees won, isn't it?

Anything to pander....right now Rudy is also a huge fan of Ohio State, the Pats, and the Wild.

Who flippin' cares? He could root for the Bad News Bears for all I care. Rudy's team preference and your "reporting" of it is 100% irrelevant to the issues at hand. I usually enjoy the posts on C&L but this is as ridiculous as John Edward's haircuts or John Kerry's wind surfing. Shame on you!

I'm a longtime Yankees fan, having grown up in the Bronx. This is a dumb issue to take Guliani over
the coals with. I know a bunch of other Yankee fans that would have preferred that Cleveland won
the American League pennant (the racist mascot notwithstanding) because, WTF ,who cares about the
Rockies? If you're a real baseball fan, you gotta go with the team that's got some history, not an
expansion team that can barely ever sellout their stadium. The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry does have a bit of mutual respect involved when the series comes around and you have a situation like this year.
Guiliani is a major danger to America if he's ever elected to national office. This sort of nitpicking
only cheapens the REAL political issues this guy has.

D.S. Ellis @ 36:

Besides, as a New Yorker, I can tell you, if the Yankees aren't in the Series then the series doesn't count...
