Andrew Sullivan Appeals to GOP Base to "Vote for Giuliani!"

Andrew Sullivan went on the Chris Matthews Show this Sunday and ticked off the reasons why Giuliani has such a strong appeal to the GOP base despite his more liberal positions on abortion rights, same sex marriage, cross-dressing, etc:
"If you think Dick Cheney has been a great Vice President; You'll love Rudy Giuliani as President." ..."If you think America needs more enemies; If you think America needs to alienate more countries; Vote for Giuliani!"

Oh, ouch. When comparing somebody to the current vice president is an attack (and a good one), that's a bad sign on a lot of levels.
Too bad that Cheney didn't run, actually--I don't think even Rove could have gotten him elected. He'd have had a heart attack halfway through the second debate anyway.

Did the confused Sullivan already forget that Rudy Giuliani has accepted the support of Pat Robertson and that the former NYC mayor constantly tries to win the Christian Right over on social/cultural issues by promising to appoint Justices like Scalia?

I love it, you hear time after time Conservatives going on and on about how they are so more accepting withing their party then the Democrats are, and how big of a party tent they have. Sullivan criticizes GOP and is now wished by Mr. XXX to leave the GOP. LOL great stuff, really is.
I have always been a Sullivan fan, I have been watching Maher forever and Sullivan always makes for a great panelist.

I didn't believe Dubya would win in 2000, He didn't, but that didn't matter because the fix was in and he was given the WH by the Scalia court. As far as I am concerned, its people like Andrew Sullivan and his ilk for why the United States went to war in Iraq. Its the like of Andrew Sullivan in supporting the GOP vote against his own personal interests. In supporting Bush and the GOP, Sullivan helps to create the social and cultural conditions which discriminates against gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgendered people. Andrew Sullivan in being a Republican promoted the likes of Antonia Scalia. Samuel Alito, John Roberts, and Clarence Thomas.
Andrew Sullivan in being a gay America is seen as trash by the same people he has been defending all these years. I have tolerance for the likes of Mr. Sullivan, but, little patience as well. The man overall has done nothing to see where he has been "logical" the entire time he has been around the windbag circuit.
Those who are ultra-nationalist, authoritarian, hyper-ethnocentric, clerical, chauvinists, and militaristic, tend, also, to be anti-democratic, sexists, xenophobes, and racists, not to mention bigots against gays and lesbians.
GUARANTEED the only reason Sullivan is doing this is because Giuliani is the only non-D candidate that hasn't vowed to write GLBTs out of the constitution. GUARANTEED. Giuliani is also the only R with decent name and face recognition. Ergo, easy formula: known guy + doesn't hate GLBTs = perfect republican for president. Too bad the tragic flaw is that he's a raging authoritarian.

And yes, he was very wrong on the war (like many Democrats, for that matter), but has come around a long time ago. And he is one of the few conservative bloggers who regularly denounces the fake 'conservatism' of W and his gang, especially on matters such as torture and privacy. He happens to be a gay guy with conservative instincts, so that puts him in a difficult position: support liberals who I disagree with on most things, but accept me as gay? Or conservatives? It's a tough line to walk, and he doesn't always do it well, but he's interesting and tries to maintain some logical coherence.
I've seen him a few times and he seems well educated and well spoken. But I'm curious as to why he thinks anyone would listen to him. He's an openly gay conservative libertarian, HIV positive person who supports the very ideology that want to take away his rights, prevent him from marrying, prevent him from adopting, prevent him from becoming a citizen because he has HIV ( even though he contracted it HERE ), make it legal to murder him, and consider him to be an 'abomination before god'. That sounds a lot like a person who is starving to death supporting a political ideology that refuses to allow him to eat.

Andrew Sullivan seems to be one of the more dishonest 'pundits' around...Like a slightly less inflammatory Camille Paglia, he picks the most counter-intuitive positions and runs with it, acting like he really believes 'em. It's the sort of contrarian / smarty-pants school of bringing attention to yourself when you don't really have too much of interest to say. I never buy his claims of believing whatever position he's selling, and, it seems like Andrew, more than anything, wants to be notorious and will say anything to get there. I am curious to know Chris Matthews' responses to Adrew Sullivan's characterization of Rudy Guilliani as Dick Cheney's successor to a dictatorial presidency embracing torture, wiretaps and limitless, unchecked executive powers. Matthews has a serious case of "man-love" for Rudy, so did he deflect or dimiss Sullivan's depiction of Rudy?
