Huckabee on Gays and women's rights: Homosexuality=Pedophilia/ Choice=Criminal
By John Amato Sunday Dec 30, 2007 4:01pm
The more we get to hear Huckabee---the more we understand that this candidate running on extreme religious fundamentals is unqualified to lead a culture that is made up of many, many different belief systems, or none at all. Check out this clip from Meet The Press and watch his wingnuttia in action. It's a sight to behold. Please, pray for him. Think Progress and Page OneQ have more...(h/t Heather)

MR. RUSSERT: But when you say aberrant or unnatural, do you believe you're born gay or you choose to be gay?
GOV. HUCKABEE: I don't know whether people are born that way. People who are gay say that they're born that way. But one thing I know, that the behavior one practices is a choice. We may have certain tendencies, but how we behave and how we carry out our behavior--but the important issue that I want to address, because I think when you bring up the faith question, Tim, I've been asked more about my faith than any person running for president. I'm OK with that.
MR. RUSSERT: But you said you would ban all abortions.
GOV. HUCKABEE: Well, that's not just because I'm a Christian, that's because I'm an American. Our founding fathers said that we're all created equal. I think every person has intrinsic worth and value...
MR. RUSSERT: But many Americans believe that that would be, that would be you imposing your faith belief...
UPDATE: Jane reports that Huckabee held a press conference today saying:
Huckabee just held a press conference where he announced that he made a negative ad against Romney -- Lord forgive him -- but at the last minute he decided to turn the other cheek and not broadcast it. But just to show he wasn't shittin' y'all, he decided to show it to a few of his closest friends at a press conference that included Tim Russert, Joe Klein, Barbara Comstock and a few hundred journalists and bloggers of varying degrees of noteriety.
MR. RUSSERT: Peggy Noonan, a woman of faith who writes for The Wall Street Journal, said that sometimes it appears your philosophy is "This is what God wants," and that doesn't encourage discussion, it squelches it. And, and this is what you wrote in your book, "Kids Who Kill," in 1998: "It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations--from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia." Why would you link homosexuality with sadomasochism, pedophilia and necrophilia?
GOV. HUCKABEE: Well, what I was pointing out is all of these are deviations from what has been the traditional concept of sexual behavior and men and women having children, raising those children in the context of a, of a traditional marriage and family. And, again, taken out of the larger context of that book, speaking about how so many of our social institutions have been broken down.
MR. RUSSERT: But do you think homosexuality is equivalent to pedophilia...
GOV. HUCKABEE: Oh, of course not.
MR. RUSSERT: ...or sadomasochism?
GOV. HUCKABEE: No, of course not. I didn't say...
MR. RUSSERT: But this is what concerns people. This, this is what you did say about homosexuality: "I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural and sinful lifestyle." That's millions of Americans.
GOV. HUCKABEE: Tim, understand, when a Christian speaks of sin, a Christian says all of us are sinners. I'm a sinner, everybody's a sinner. What one's sin is, means it's missing the mark. It's missing the bull's eye, the perfect point. I miss it every day; we all do. The perfection of God is seen in a marriage in which one man, one woman live together as a couple committed to each other as life partners. Now, even married couples don't do that perfectly, so sin is not some act of equating people with being murderers or rapists...
I hope I've answered these questions very candidly and very honestly. I think it's important for us to talk about it. But the most important thing is to find out, does our faith influence our public policy and how? I've never tried to rewrite science textbooks. I've never tried to come out with some way of imposing a doctrinaire Christian perspective in a way that is really against the Constitution. I've never done that.
GOV. HUCKABEE: But, no. It's not a faith belief. It's deeper than that. It's a human belief. It goes to the heart of who we are as a civilization. If I believe that your intrinsic worth is not changed by your ancestry, your last name, by your IQ, by your abilities or disabilities, if I value your life and respect it with dignity and worth because it is human, then that's what draws me to the inescapable conclusion that I should be for the sanctity of every and each human life. That's why we go after that 12-year-old boy in the woods of North Carolina when he's lost, not because he has greater worth than someone else, but because we believe he has equal worth as everyone else. I like it that in this country we treat each other--at least we should--with that sense of equality. Our founding fathers penned that in the Declaration of Independence when they declared...
MR. RUSSERT: Some Americans believe that life does not begin at conception, and that it's...
GOV. HUCKABEE: Well, scientifically I think that's almost...
MR. RUSSERT: But...
GOV. HUCKABEE: ...a point that you couldn't argue. How, how could you say that life doesn't begin at conception...
MR. RUSSERT: Right. Do you respect that view?
GOV. HUCKABEE: ...biologically?
MR. RUSSERT: Do you respect that view?
GOV. HUCKABEE: I respect it as a view, but I don't think it has biological credibility.
MR. RUSSERT: And what would happen to doctors or women who participated in abortion?
GOV. HUCKABEE: It's always the, the point of trying to say, "Are you going to criminalize it?" That's not the issue....read on
MR. RUSSERT: Well, if it, if it's illegal, it would be.

So the guy who denies evolution has the stones to bring up "biological credibility" when contemplating when life begins.
You can't make this stuff up...
"Tim, I’ve been asked more about my faith than any person running for president. I’m OK with that."
hey gov asshat, you oughta be ok with that....you are the idiot who made it an issue
or was it someone else who made that xmas commercial with the shining cross in the background and talked about jesus
wonder when we are gonna catch this jerk wacking some guy off in a public mens room
I'm no scientist and I can't say for certain whether or not people are born as complete assholes, but I can say that carrying out these asshole tendencies is a choice. Maybe Huckabee could explain to us why he chooses to be such an asshole.?
Come on, everybody, sing!
"I'm a sinner,
you're a sinner,
he's a sinner,
she's a sinner,
wouldn't ya like to be a sinner, too?"
All hail the Dr. Pepper pentacostal trinity. (;>
This is one scary Republican. Most are a bit more subtle in pursuing ultimate power for The Party.
I just watched "jesus Camp" last night. I'm scared. Its like a madrassas for Christians, same thing, different deity. This fundamentalist deserves the Darwin Award. No doubt he will do himself in with a gun.
WOW!!! Hahahahahahahahha..................
Well then, my advice to you is to shut the fuck up.
How's that for clarity, you sack?
Funny he should bring that up..
I'm no far of Gomer, but you need to stop smearing a candidate. He did not say one equates the other. He is definitely the wrong choice but the man is smooth in his responses. I hope he does crash and burn. He views are definitely fundamentalist.
GOV. HUCKABEE: It's always the, the point of trying to say, "Are you going to criminalize it?" That's not the issue.
This is an interesting way to skirt the topic as well. Although I doubt he would be able to do anything of the sort, he views are still dangerous. C&L, if want more credibility in your reporting/headlines keep the sensationalism out, and you might get broader appeal.
I don't think that religious right will agree with him that a Human belief is deeper than a Faith belief.
When I was 20 I thought that someday people like this would still be around but be so marginalized that they could be ignored. 40 years later and I am afraid they will be just a short step away from the power to send this country to a living hell.
Is christian based sociopathy a requirement for public service?
This is one god fearking furit loop. I am sure we will soon be hearging from bin laden saying this is a guy he can work with.
I wasn't expecting to see Bin Laden again until after the writer's strike.
I can't type today.
diamondmc @ 14:
Bin Laden and Huckabee are of the same ilk. Just a different God.
Just more evidence that the only religious people who live in reality with the rest of us are religious moderates --- a.k.a. "people who have an emotional attachment to their religious traditions, but who no longer derive their sense of what is true from religious dogma".
The faithheads are going to destroy this country, and possibly the world.
Just say no to christian sharia!
Thank you Mike, and good-bye. Your 15 minutes of fame is almost over.
Avid Reader @ 15:
Ha Ha....Osama bin Publishing
Russert misrepresented a pro-choice talking-point, somewhat. No one argues that a fetus isn't alive, simply that there are certain trimesters wherein the fetus is no more intelligent, cognisant, or self-aware than a plant. Consciousness, and the ability to feel pain, require a functional nervous system and brain. That is science.
I actually do appreciate his views regarding human lives and worth to a certain extent, of course. There are millions of Americans who agree with that view, in fact. What needs to be remembered is that those who are pro-choice aren't pro-abortion; no one is in favour of life ending. At least, no one worth considering...
MS @ 17:
Actually, it's the same God...
MR. RUSSERT: But you said you would ban all abortions.
GOV. HUCKABEE: Well, that’s not just because I’m a Christian, that’s because I’m an American.
Here we go! If you are not in favor of banning all abortions, you are not an American! Raise your hand if you are still proud to be an American.
Herbert @ 11:
I agree with you Herbert that the faithful should have a problem with that statement.
When he said "I hope I’ve answered these questions very candidly and very honestly", I wonder why he has to 'hope' he answered 'very' candidly and 'very' honestly. How come he couldn't just say "I've answered these questions candidly and honestly". It makes me think he knows he's been less than candid and less than honest.
As far as "why we go after that 12-year-old boy in the woods of North Carolina when he’s lost" for some reason Mark Foley popped into my mind!
Holy crap. Meet our new Reverend 'n Cheef.
Hey world-- this blind, unquestioning follower of bronze-age goat-fuckers will restore your faith in us! Really!
I think Huckabee is going to be the new President of the USA!
Instead of playing the 9/11 card - hello Rudy! - he has gone for 2 issues that mainstream America seems to despise most of all;- homosexuality and abortion!
I even think Americans hate these 2 things more than terrorism, corruption, murder and rape!
Even die hard gay republicans will support Huckabee - don't know why but they will? Dick Cheney's daughter supports the Reps even though they denounce her "lifestyle"!.
The red states will NOT vote for an African American or a woman. Nice safe christian white heterro married man will be the winner - and Huckabee has these traits in droves!!!
Of course once he is elected - we'll no doubt discover he or one of his staff had an abortion or is a closet homosexual - but that will be too late cos he will get in!
Fingers crossed Americans don't make the same mistake they did in 2004! (The 2000 election doesn't count cos the Supreme court rigged that one!).
Wow, Huckabees answer on homosexuality had an Alan Keyes tone to it.
That be one crazy governer!
Well he's a "Praise the Lord, pass the ammo" kind of hypocritical Talibaptist asshole, isn't he?
I'm not at all about praying, and they say there are no atheists in foxholes, but I think it's time we all dropped to our right knee, crossed ourselves real good and
askfervently beg The Lord™ to deliver us from evil, and to protect us from His followers of this particular type, even though it hasn't worked for the last 13 years, since the Contract on America.Jesus must be spinning in his grave over this kind of Schmukabee shit.
Unless you're a liar and a cheat. Then it's Bill Clinton's fault.
Women who are raped not included.
Holy Huck! this guys is scarier than shit. Anyone who wants us to go back a 100 years, vote Huck!
He wants to ban abortion "not just because I’m a Christian, that’s because I’m an American"?
Oh really? The rest of us are what then?
What a complete and total idiot.
nutbag, fer sure!
MS @ 17:
Maybe they can have a god summit and everything will be all right. Praise be to the gods of nuts.
"Well, that’s not just because I’m a Christian, that’s because I’m an American. Our founding fathers said that we’re all created equal. I think every person has intrinsic worth and value…"
And in the days of the FFs, people didn't think the fetus was a person until the quickening.
The Huckster is just picking and choosing what he wants to believe and then rationalizing those beliefs...
I personally want to know how many men Governor Huckabee has chosen not to sleep with...and how many he has. ;-p
If it's a choice for gay people to be gay, then straight people must be attracted to men and women too, but choose only to fool around with the opposite sex.
Huck's idea for illegal immigrants is to send them back, then charge a fee to to come back after applying for the right. He said any of their children who born here, and thus were American citizens, would have to go back with their parents.
I guess that's better for the kids, after all where would rethugs send a kid who's parents were deported, Jesus Camp?
WHAT THE FUCK?!?!? This guy is WAYYYY beyond dangerous. This guy actually believe the complete and total shit that is spewing out his mouth. I wonder if he would agree to a compromise and only abort the gay fetuses.
I love it when bible thumping moon faced red necks try to use science in their arguments. Then in the next breath tell you the earth is 9000 years old and men were walking around with dinosaurs in the garden of eden. Man what a totally fucked up country this is. Can't we deport all these troglodytes to some useless place, like Oklahoma or Iowa? Ooops, that second one wouldn't work since there are too many there already.
Huckelberry should worry about his own gigantic son - the sociopath in the making, who likes to torture dogs to their death.
are straight males born that way?...........he would if he could but he can't because he won't......................I'm gettin dizzy.
But Huckabee is perhaps a Wannabe?
The urgency to procreate with a global population of over 6 billion is diminished. This has led one AIDS and queer activist to quip, “Heterosexuality on an overpopulated planet is a psychosocial disorder.” In the immortal words of Edith Massey in the role of Aunt Ida in John Waters 1974 film, Female Trouble, while encouraging her nephew to be a “nelly,” she notes “I worry that you’ll work in an office, have children, celebrate wedding anniversaries. The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life.” Her nephew, an avowed if somewhat twisted heterosexual lad, replies, “Sometimes I think you’re fucking crazy.”
We really MUST help the poor, sad heterosexual to abandon this sick, unnatural lifestyle! Poor dears.
Honestly, some of my best friends are straight...Love the sin. Oops. Er. The sinner. Something like that. By all means, do read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man while all are at it.
Gomer.
Jane(on the ground in Iowa) has a good post on Jowl's Chuckle A Be...
http://firedoglake.com/2007/12/31/huckabee-has-anti-war-protesters-arres...
"..I guess Huckabee wasn't much interested in giving an answer because he had them arrested."
Well, Huckabee, you may have been born a crackpot. You have clearly demonstrated you have crackpot tendencies, but it's up to you to suppress those tendencies.
Tequila @ 30:
You left out all non-whites, as did the FFs.
But Huck is accurate. You just have to remember that "we" = "white males" and you've got it.
Huckabee's a Flintstone in a Jetsons world
RobertD @ 42:
yep........and he wants us all to live in Mayberry RFD
Um... bullshit. This asshole is a preacher? Shouldn't he, um, read the damn bible then? Perhaps he would then know that supposedly God commanded MANY relationships that were polygamous (many wives to one man). He is lying about the bible, isn't that a sin? Oh I forgot, only bigoted baptist preachers with lyposuction are allowed to cast stones, and are exempt from their own rules. And what does that have to do with homosexuality? If straight parents fuck up their marriage, it isn't because of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", it's because people are selfish jerks, in general, and marriage is hard work. Does he really think that straight guys, just can't help themselves if there are gay fellas around? Too much temptation I mean, really. Wow. This guy is repressing something, because that is just not a problem that I (or anyone not gay that I know) has ever had.
The only social institutions that have "broken down" in the last hundred years are:
a) people with black skin are no longer considered sub-human, and are full citizens with all the rights of any American including voting
b) women are no longer considered sub-human, and are full citizens with all the rights of any American including voting
c) children are no longer to be used as surrogate slave labor (see a and b) in factories (but at least we still can abuse Mexicans and Guatemalans -- they'll fight hard to keep that one)
I'm sure Mr. Huckabee is disgusted by this terribly "broken institutions". Why can't we go back to the golden Old Days indeed, massah Huckabee?
But public institutions that encourage necrophilia? Good Lord help them, what the fuck are they doing down there in bible-thumping Arkansas?! Seriously, maybe things really ARE that bad down there... which should be enough to prove that evangelical, militant Christianity makes things worse, not better. I propose a canoe expedition to find out. Ah... you go first and tell me how it turns out.
Here in the real world, we may not all be militant, intolerant "Christians" but at least we don't rape our dead, or strangle dogs to death for fun. Something tells me these people like Huck and his family really DON'T "know Jesus". I've read Jesus' stuff, and there ain't ANY of this bullshit in there.
jr @ 46:
Shame on you. Why would you raise huckabuc to the level of the nice family like the Flintstones. Fred and Wilma are very nice people.
Huckleberry Sin should come out of the closet, to thy own self be true!
please be open minded and look at this link

JTM @ 45:
Actually, it's white male property owners...
bill @ 51:
I am not sure what your point is? Is this meant as a joke? or are you serious?
bill @ 51:
Sorry, I'm too busy practicing homosexuality/sadomasochism.
Chris H. @ 54:
bill @ 51:
Both side's are soo hostile....Geez Us!
A pimple on the arsehole of progress.
First the mind boggles then it wobbles. Wouldn't it be cool if you guys elected the first president with a degree in Astrology. Think of the savings! Who needs intelligence services when you got a good book with the future all laid out. The times they are a endin'.
GOV. HUCKABEE: ...Our founding fathers said that we’re all created equal. I think every person has intrinsic worth and value…
...unless of course, they're are on Death Row. Then I say "KILL 'EM!!!!""
Chris H. @ 54:
And homosexuality/necrophilia
Chris H. @ 54:
I find practice makes perfect.
fuck huck!
bill @ 51:
Bill @51, Are you one of these hit and run guys? I am still waiting for you to tell us what your point was. Serious or Joke?
miss_kitty @ 58:
or if they are minorities or women or ........
Huckabooger knows how to tailor his message for the audience.
Yep, he is good at bullshitting the sheep. Give the Reverend Huckabooger a big steaming bowl of crap and he will convince you that you are eating ice cream.
He can sell insurance to a corpse and convince everyone it was the corpses' idea.
If Huckabuba receives the nomination, I hope the Dem. nominee does not try to out christian fundamentalist this guy, he'll suck all of the air out of the room.
miss_kitty @ 58:
...unless of course, they're war protestors. Then I say "ARREST 'EM!!!!""
bill @ 51:
Now if you nice people would establish a universal health care system then the author of the linked material wouldn't have been off his meds, as he clearly has been for a considerable time.
Did he just say, in essence: As long as you're not gay, we respect all human life?
And by the by...doggy style, oral, hetero sexual anal, hand jobs etc...sex...are also aberrations according to his religion. So...bite me, Mike Huckabee, you thinly veiled, two faced, liar that a bunch of people will actually fall for.
amato, don't worry too much about shmuckabee. he'll be pretty easy to knock out.
JustSickOfIt @ 38:
remember that huck's followers control the voting machines.
Peter G @ 66:
He has never been on meds. He is high on god.
miss_kitty @ 65:
Unless ,of course they are peasants, or was that pheasants? Then...
diamondmc @ 60:
I think Huckabee would find that a little redundant.
miss_kitty @ 66:
..unless of course, they're wives. Then I say "SUBMIT TO YOUR HUSBAND'S WILL!!!!""
Chris H. @ 73:
Redundant. Huck says don't ever use the devils words.
bill @ 51:
Why the King James Version of the Bible?
Do you have any idea how many "translations" the Bible went through before it became the "Authorized King James Version"?
Shawnmeat @ 22:
I agree, plus Russert was off the mark all over this interview. He dropped a pro-gay talking point into the mix as well ("We're born that way! It's not a choice!") just to see how Huckabee would respond.
It seemed like Russert was trying to play Gotcha instead of nailing the nutcase on his God-fearing insanity....
Radically Moderate @ 76:
bill @ 51 is a hit and run kinda poster. He won't be around to answer yours or my questions.
"GOV. HUCKABEE: I respect it as a view, but I don’t think it has biological credibility..."
Don't ya love it when the Jesus Freaks pull the science card OH SO conveniently....
dingleberry huckleberry doesn't have a message for all of america, much less the entire world. he doesn't even know where pakistan is, and he probably doesn't even know what a national intelligence estimate is. he certainly was caught off guard when the 2007 n.i.e. came out, stating iran had no nukes.
dingleberry huckleberry's audience is comprised entirely of evangelicals who drank the bush/end days kool-aid, but who have now awakened -but have one hell of a hangover.
Chris H. @ 54:
Whew! That link has a whole lotta crazy in it (not enough to be amusing, however). And why are those sites always in 120 point all-caps? IT'S LIKE ALL THE UBER-CHRISTIANS HAVE TO SHOUT OVER RATIONAL THOUGHT!!!!!!!1111oneone
Well, not all. These guys seem all right, if you feel compelled to take your kids to church. Disclaimer: I went to this flavor as a kid, until I freaked out as a teen because I really never did believe in God, and couldn't fake it in good conscience, once I'd seriously thought about it. To which the pastor (one of the best humans I've ever met) just laughed and laughed. I pleaded, "No, I'm serious, I can't come here anymore and say these words because there IS no God! Jesus might have been good guy that made a lot of sense, but he wasn't divine either!" I was quite concerned about my hypocrisy. He simply chucked again, smiled, patted me on the back and said, "Don't worry about it. I know you. Your heart is in the right place. You are always welcome back." And he meant it (20 years later, I might be a bit rougher 'round the edges, but was definitely a 'good kid').
A Christian leader like that... wow. Never said a breath of heat or intolerance (except perhaps a tinge about the hypocrisy of the condescending rich, which he frowned at). Seems even longer ago than it really was... I don't know that they are all like that, and to this day I don't abide by any of the mystical smoke and mirrors (the trinity? honestly, who's crazy idea was that?!). But I'm just sayin' they aren't all like Huck...
I have a sneaky feeling he is not really going for the presidency. He is going for a mega church and TEE VEE show. There's a hell of a lot more money in it.
Rudy @ 68:
Religion yes...things created by preist's.
Yet when the originator of ClusterHuck's 'religion' taught relatively little on Sex.....
can you see it now little pamphlet's at church....Jesus on Sex,Who would Jesus do?, ....
as I understand the bible and someone correct me if I'm wrong but Jesus's only
admonition was against adultry(wanting something that is not their's, yes I understand the primitive property right's of the
Hebrew's)
Yeah, we really need another backward bible thumping moron in charge.
