Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards took over the Wørd segment from Stephen Colbert to discuss the all important demographic in this election: white, male voters. And who better to talk about their values than Edwards?
You know, Stephen, you’re right about white males playing an important part in this election. Their votes are being courted as a demographic tiebreaker between these two tough candidates and no white male’s vote is being courted more vigorously than this one. [points to self]
It is no secret that both campaigns have sought my support. So far, I haven’t decided which of these excellent candidates I’m going to endorse. On the one hand, I don’t want to be seen as anti-hope. On the other hand, I don’t want James Carville to bite me. So who? Who am I going to vote for in the next to the last primary, North Carolina? Well, I’ll support whoever presents a platform that’s consistent with my values. I’ll support the candidate who’ll raise the federal minimum wage. Someone who’ll fight for the 37 million Americans who wake up in poverty every day. Somebody who’ll protect the interest of working families. Also, I’d like a jet-ski.

John Edwards talked a good enough talk to impress Ralph Nader, that’s good enough for me. Too bad Edwards didn’t catch on.
One of the better “The Word” segments. I think they ran on with the Jetski joke a bit too much, but most of it was excellent policy discussion.
I’m just sad that the three didn’t have a small mini-debate on his show rather than a 2 minute brief appearance.
Edwards was hilarious and appeared to enjoy himself thoroughly. Glad he has that ability with all he’s gone through with the election and Elizabeth’s illness. Best wishes to them both.
Well Politics and Politicians are finally finding their proper niche.
Comedy
What a sport Edwards is. I like politicians who can do that.
He should have asked for a pony. I would have.
Yep white male voter, scared as heck to vote for a woman. This country sure is ready for the 21st century isn’t it….with the white males grounded in the 17th century.
I thought this bit was great. White males stuck in the 17th century, Ha! I’m currently pricing some brand spanking new trailer homes, thank you very much!
And to be fair that woman is pretty scary.
That was awesome. I hope he doesn’t endorse either of them though, so he can keep hammering this message.
Great bit! Too bad Edwards didn’t show this kind of ‘personality’ early on…it may have helped. May. Not definite, but maybe.
You gotta love it!
Can McCain do this?

Edwards would make a cool VP with Obama. Thank god, white men (like me) can speak, finally.
L.A. Confidential @ 12:
“Skin flute” is probably the only thing McCain can play.
Colbert on fire! Three top Democratic candidates (present and former) on his show on one night? Here’s to hoping appearances like these help young people get increasingly excited about politics.
I had contributed to Edwards’ campaign, and would have dearly loved to see him get the nomination. The Democratic Party may be blueing again, but I guess it wasn’t quite that blue yet. He ran a great campaign against two celebrity candidates on much less money, which I think shows his message did catch on. And he has a great self-deprecating sense of humor, too! I wish him all the best.
Truckers Protest, the Resistance Begins.
Support them.
Love this guy. Was so pissed off when he dropped out of the race. Nice to see he can laugh at himself too.
This was a great show overall, but EdWords was by far the most entertaining bit.
“On the other hand, I don’t want James Carville to bite me.”
Was probably my favorite line.
Matt @ 18:
Mine too!
He’s still my guy. The best thing is he seems to be having fun.
Watching this clip, I actually got a little teary-eyed. I didn’t realize until now just how much I wanted Edwards to be the Democratic nominee, and how little faith I have in either Clinton or Obama.

nothing wrong with double wides or a premade affairs, better than cardboard boxes or living in a car.
Currently am helping youngest BIL and his wife renovate their ‘new’ S/H trailer, they finally have stability after many years being shafted in rented housing.
Goddamn traitor John, way to show such blatant support for Hillary with that worthless universal healthcare plug. Well looks like you finally showed your true color you racist, ignorant asshole. I say good riddance to your failed campaign.
I know why you dropped out, Eddy, but I stills misses ya.
Looking forward to seeing what role you will play in the coming months and even years!
Crabby Patty @ 21:
Me too. This was a man of the people. I’m now backing Obama, but Edwards still has a lotta class.
OMG!!!! who knew??!!! AWG (average white guys) like me and my favorite pastimes (drinking, bowling and napping) are in again!
Hallalujah and pass the PBR…..I’m thirsty and ichin for a jet ski, no, three jet ski’s oh yea, and I want to be a cool spy too… That sounds like all kinds of fun…. Whoo hoo!!!! Now I’m going to go take a nap till bowling for dollars comes on…
P.S. Yea, Edwards was a good sport and I still think he’s the one who’d make the best prez….. Maybe with Kuch in the backup role… Or the other way around… Either way it don’t matter… They got ignored and kicked to the curb by an MSM peopled by morons…..
(Sigh)… Now I really do want a beer.. Naw, fuck that, I’m breakin out the Poppa Van Winkle…..Distilled spirits is definitely in order now… Ohh what a world…….JD
This slayed me! OMG, this was so brilliant!!!
obamarulesall @ 24:
Yeah, right. Looking at your handle, you’re really an Obama supporter…or a Democrat.
Don’t telegraph your troll-ness. You gotta be subtle. Otherwise you just come off smelling–desperate.
Jack Damage @ 27:
Yeah, that’s what I wanted - Edwards as prez and Kucinich as vice prez. The assholes in the media couldn’t even hide their distaste for either, especially Dennis. It amazes me that such a peace-loving man is laughed off and derided as “nuts”.
obamarulesall @ 24:
Pal, I’m an Obama supporter and voted for him in the NY primary, but I’m not Obama worshipper as you appear to be. Hillary’s got the right idea with universal healthcare. And you do nothing for Obama’s cause by accusing Edwards of being a racist simply because he agrees with Hillary. That was an stupid and unnecessary remark that came strictly out of your ass.
Is it me or is the audio quality on this clip awful.
JohnMcCainLovesViagra @ 30:
Remember it was HRC doing the laugh to his face and for the cameras.
She followed her MIC owned MSM script to the line.
Holy crap! This was great!! I laughed my gut off, and realized just how much I miss Edwards running. I even donated to his campaign and everything. Hope the guy got out of the race for a great reason, or in “EdWords”: someone better get him a cabinet post along with that pair of jet skies!
Mike @ 31:
“37 million Americans waking up in poverty” “universal haircare” nee healthcare and Obama looking happy and dominating that photo mashup, HRC looking glum.
affordable healthcare, “every single man woman and child”
facts and truths, Edwards is pro Obama, this video is nailing his colours to the flagpole.
Yeah, Edwards was my choice and a few more apprearances like this and he may be able to convice enough deligates, since Hillary says that they’re all up for grabs. And if he can’t do that I’ll vote for McinSane because Edwards was the best and the other two are so bellow him on the scale.
Freakin’ Kevins!
bigirv @ 11:
you must have not have been paying attention to edwards months ago when he was running. he had quite the ‘personality’ when i saw him speak.
ferrofluid @ 32:
seems okay to me. the video is worse.
Mike @ 31:

Subtlety is something some trolls simply have no experience with.
Marge @ 7:
Jebus Marge. You almost want Me to go out and get a jersey that says ‘Marge hate Me’ on the back with a number zero. Whew.
killthepoor @ 37:
The Fascist = Corporate Media did everything to ignore Edwards and it worked. He was right on but could not raise enough money.
Marge @ 7:
The 17th century is an improvement, they were Medieval the last time I looked.
I have posted a transcript of all four politically relevant segments of last night’s Colbert Report on my blog, “The Third Path.” That would be the bit with Hillary Clinton, the interview with Rep. Patrick Murphy (D–PA, an Obama supporter), the “EdWørds” bit with John Edwards outlining what a candidate would need to do to gain his endorsement, and the Obama bit at the end, putting “manufactured political distractions” on Colbert’s “On Notice” board.
Alice Nader @ 42:
Ummm. I don’t know how often You come here or Marge - But the white males here are far from medieval or 17th century. take your man-hate elsewhere, please.
Paul C @ 36:
You would go from Edwards who was progressive, dare I say enlightened, to McWho-Cares-What-His-Name-Is, who is on par with Atilla the Hun.
You are not thinking these things through with the necessary nuance.
Unless, of course, you are a nuanced troll.
David Hawes @ 44:
It is not man hate, it is concern with the return of feudalism. Besides it was a joke.
Alice Nader @ 46:
Really? When such pondscum as malkin and Coulter are leading the charge? Methinks You apply your ‘jokes’ to the wrong gender.
Alice Nader @ 46:
Even though it was a joke, there is more than ample demonstration of misogyny in these many pages which I have frequented and observed for sometime.
Men just don’t like to be called on it.
It’s not a joke when people such as I don’t want a certain candidate then get labeled as ‘afraid’ or worse. It’s childish and frankly 17th century politics.
