Daily Tech had an item that caused a bit of a stir in conservative circles.
The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming “incontrovertible.”
This, coming the same day as Al Gore’s speech, was apparently quite exciting to those on the right who prefer to deny global warming and/or its causes.
One said, “The Association of Physical Scientists has reversed its position on anthropogenic global warming. Where it once considered its position ‘incontrovertable’ [sic] it is now sponsoring open debate on the matter… This is a big deal.”
Another argued, “[Physicists] bailing on Gore…. The rats are leaving the ship. Global warming alarmists are frauds.”
Jonah Goldberg initially said, “The same day that Al Gore does his man-to-the-moon spiel on global warming, the American Physical Society — the second largest professional association of physicists — rescinds its total support for the global warming. I await the usual chorus to sing us a tune about how the APS is ‘anti-science.’”
Red State told readers, “The headline at The Drudge Report website, ‘Group Repping 50,000 Physicists Opens Global Warming Debate…’ [linked to dailytech.com] says it all.”
Except, in this case, it didn’t say it all. Climate Progress explains the story very well, including all the reasons the right is wrong about this.

just another lie brought to you by the people who couldn’t tell the truth to save their make-believe immor(t)al souls
http://www.livescience.com/env.....ps-gw.html
of course, their supporters think education and science are brought to you by the devil…so is there any question who they will choose to believe?
The deniers are now really grasping at straws.
Still, don’t forget, they’ve got lots of money and power behind them and they won’t go down without a fight.
Fake pearls cast before real swine, in this case from oil cartel whores, to the brainwashed wingnuts. This is funny.
Not to be critical, but reading the post above made it sound as though the APS really was denying global warming. But on second reading, it seems the right is only claiming that the APS is now denying the global warming. Right? I had to go into the Climate Progress link to get a grip on this (thanks for that linky).
No lack of gaseous emissions from the right.

they’ll burn the entire planet before they give up. people have got to wake up to how serious this threat is.

If more people understood the very real threats of climate change and if they were given the tools to mitigate these threats, corporate Amerika would see a decrease in profit as citizens curtailed their lifelong love affair with the gas guzzling automobiles Detroit designs and sells.
However, other industry’s profits would soar as more citizens began to demand cleaner, greener ways of transport.
But most are kept in the dark and worse with shock jocks ridiculing those who would give citizens the knowledge and tools to live greener lives.
It is these mega rich corporate fat cats who see their bottom line fall that are behind the nay sayers with huge amounts of money spread around to pay off those willing to sacrifice the planet for 30 pieces of silver.
This is great! In one day we discover that the war in iraq is over and was a success and global warming is a fraud! Good thing we have good folks like mcsame and the bushie ‘religion is science’ company telling us the truth. What else is the ‘librul media’ not telling us?
Damn my sarcasm meter just exploded.
Great post — first saw it at Carpetbagger. I’m just waiting for one of the local nutters to write into the letters section of my city’s paper and then I can slam them with all this info. Again, thanks.
Also, I went to Climate Progress and emailed the people at the bottom of the story urging them to dismiss Marque, the editor responsible for running the piece. Got a response from Zwicker after only about 3 minutes thanking me and saying they were working on a response.
I hope they can Marque’s anti scientific propagandizing butt.
I hope they get eaten by a polar bear.
Conservatives have no clue about the peer review process.
Show them a peer-reviewed journal article and some opinion piece from a Web site and it’s all the same to them.
That’s why most academic economists laugh at their Supply Side malarky too.
I’m surprised these shysters aren’t telling everyone that Global Farting caused by not enough tax cuts for the rich and corporations is what’s causing climate change.
My dear republican’ts this is NOT the “so called global warming” the left is trying to push on us. Its OUR FATHER GOD…..telling us to prepare for the rapture. YeeeeeeHaawwwww!!! Its rapture time ;-)
It’s scary when ignorance and hatred start to rule the world.
The oil companies would sacrific their children if it meant a bump in next quarters profits.
Their is no consciousness that the holocaust happened, does that mean it didn’t?
Getting 100% of the people to agree on an issue, no matter what the issue, is never going to happen - but presenting the disagreements as if they represent a genuine equal disagreement is dangerous to scientific understanding and the advancement of our society. It is sort of like the MSM parading out blacks to talk about politics, they try to be “fair” so they have about an equal % support McCain and an equal number support Obama, leading the viewer to think there is a real split in the black community about Obama v McCain, then the polls come out and its something like a 75 point lead for Obama.
It’s tough battling with a group of people who strategically propogate lies at every opportunity to a willing audience that wants fantasy over reality.
At this point, there is no reason for them to not just make up everything they say without benefit of a public story. Gven the virulence of their revisions, it would seem that they do not even need a lead story anymore. Why wait for a tangible tidbit if your believers do not care about the details?
kep306 @ 15:
isn’t that what they are doing now?
What are you going to do? Give the SUN a citation? Give me a break!
Become a vegetarian if you are convinced that you are causing global warming, but don’t force your beliefs down my throat. We don’t need another excuse for more government control and more taxes. No thanks!
tuddies @ 19:
as in corporations polluting my air and my drinking water? would that be akin to forcing their beliefs down my throat?
Troll @ 19
The Corporatists will trot out the stupid and the glib in an attempt to defeat or deflect the science that might cause them to lose any money. The planet and its inhabitants be damned.
tuddies @ 19:
Fine, I won’t force my beliefs down your throat so long as you don’t force your car exhaust down mine!
Oh wait we all live in an interconnected world and my beliefs are about how your actions are impacting me, you have the right to do whatever the fuck you want to do so long as it doesn’t impact me, but if it does impact me then the government has the right to step in and mediate between our interest to figure out what is best for the country.
tuddies @ 19:
It’s not our beliefs we are going to force down your throat,
it’s our reality you will have to swallow.
and don’t resist, it just hurts more.
try to relax and enjoy it. You helped make it happen.
I’d comment on the science involved here but this happens to be one of those subjects, like building seven, where passions outweigh the science.
So… ONE GUY in THIRTY NINE “associated links” sez he has second thoughts about global warning…
and now Sean Hannity will turn up his volume and SHOUT TO THE MOUNTAINTOPS a thousand “I told you so’s.” Laura Ignrahm too… they’re like Siamese twins connected at the jaw bone… will SCREAM BLOODY MURDER about the left wing conspiricy to “harm” the petroleum industry with their global warming lies. Don’t you understand that all Al Gore wants to do is RE-DIRECT BILLIONS OF DOLLARS into the coffers of businesses that are developing alternative (green) energy sources. IT’S A DIABOLICAL PLOT!
WELL… DUH!
Peter G @ 24:
why don’t you leave the commenting on the science to the scientists. I’ve heard enough lies from bigots.
Look. T. Boone Pickins has basically got it right. It’s about THE MONEY… as much as it’s about the pollution. Keeping the planet a little cleaner for our children and their children is a really good reason to reduce greenhouse gasses. Preventing the largest transfer of wealth in human history (from OUR POCKETS into the purses of the oil companies) is another really good reason to invest in new WIND AND SOLAR industries. Don’t you get it? WE HAVE more wind and solar than they do… and it’s cleaner.
The ONLY thing I can agree with the right on with regards to global warming is you can’t have the spokesperson for it, Al Gore, flying around in his jet all over the place, and heating his multiple million square feet homes - kinda makes him look like an asshole.
redwhite&blue Says:
I’m really tired of this global warming thing. Why is it okay for the left to push this on America as if they are 100% certian and they have the answers. However, when the right has an idea, they are mean, racist ect. There is no way in 3.5 billion years of history that the earth all of the sudden is in danger thanks to us and 100 years of growth?!?
It’s called peer-reviewed science, bonehead. It shows us that there hasn’t been this much carbon in the air in 450,000 years. I’m sorry you’re tired of this “global warming thing.” It’s obvious you have a short attention span. Please, concentrate. Try reading. Then try to learn writing. Then learn to look up something called The Scientific Method. Also learn what an imperative statement is; I believe that’s what you were trying to make with your last entry there. The question mark only serves to confuse issues. Questions are for people seeking real answers. Your obvious tiredness and lack of emotional IQ may make this a problem for you.
redwhite&blue @ 28:
Why not? Many species, including humans, have had significant impact upon the earth. We wouldn’t even be here if microscopic organisms hadn’t pumped oxygen into the atmosphere. The Chesapeake Bay was overfished long before we mastered commercial fishing. The Mayans likely fell not due to European disease, but to massive famine caused, in part, by over farming. The question isn’t whether or not humans are making an impact on the environment - it’s how bad that impact is. I, for one, don’t want to get it wrong.
Warming seems to be happening, IF its very human pushed that is a question, and how reversible, my 2c is not much.
the bigger question is keeping humans alive and society going during any catastrophes or rapid sea level rising,
cities and low levels flooding and all the nasty things that occur.
Greenish policies and recycling where possible and efficient industries, tech, and lifestyles makes sense on a financial, engineering and common sense level.
Same with industrial and urban pollution which tends to get ignored to a certain degree in this CO2 hysteria we witness.
The thousands of tonnes of nerve agents and nasty crap dumped into the seas over the last 100 or so years is worrying, old mil chemical warfare munitions rusting away on the continental shelves is a real future killer of humanity.
Attila the Appeaser, No Stomach for Kristol @ 10:
There won’t be any polar bear left. The rich and powerful are never in any danger as long as they can make their society apathetic. There is no society more apathetic, and more anxious to believe that global warming is a myth, than the United States. I am excluding present company of course.
Thanks for the linkage… by cliking through to the APs site, i found 9under links for “physics enthusiasts”) this awesome project:

donate unused cycles of your computer processor to researching gravitational waves!
(mine does it when not researching for the World Community Grid, Seti@Home, and Climate Prediction).
Phhhhht! @ 30:
When you say left and right you should really say smart and stupid. The right sells a lot of shit that only a stupid person would buy. That is why the right has mega rich people and poor white trash belonging to their club. The left generally seeks out truth and calls bullshit on just about everything the right say, therefore they would have to be considered the more enlightened non-suckers.
Now seeing that I live in Canada, and have seen my Igloo melt in the middle of winter, I have to say that I have first hand knowledge of global warming. Also seeing that the Right lies about every other issue, I would guess that the opposite of what they say is the truth.
A couple of examples of right wing lying sound bites.
Iraq has WMD - America isn’t in a recession - If we drill, oil will be cheaper - The left wants the terrorists to win - We won the 2000 presidential election - Obama is a Muslim - Iraq will pay for itself in oil - blah bullshit blah….
redwhite&blue @ 28:
I think abject ignorance and blatant corruption might have something to do with it. Let’s stop playing the wounded bird shall we? That isn’t going to change reality so stop acting like a bigot and accept that you are going to have to amend your selfish, arrested adolescent ways.
oh, and for the record, the right is mean and racist…and lacking ideas….at least valid or useful ones.
Don from Canada @ 35:
Thank you!
you’re either pro-environment or pro-idiot. I’ll ignore for now that a bunch of idiots with cash managed to influence their fellow idiots into hijacking the “conservative” label.
If you mow your lawn, If you vacuum your floors, wash your dishes, pick up your trash…then you are doing it because you are concerned about your immediate environment. If you are concerned about your immediate environment…but you scoff at clean air, clean rivers, clean beaches….you’re a hypocritical moron.
The true anti-environmentalist is unbathed, uneducated trash that never mows his lawn, has about 10 dead cars in his yard, a dozen house pets that crap everywhere…and children they never monitor.
any anti-environmentalists out there want to argue that they are somehow better than the lowest scum? Oh, how about our good buddies like Rush Limbaugh? Did I hear Rush moaning about elites on the left last week? As if that guy buys his cigars and suits at WalMart! Nevermind that he gets paid to be the squawkpiece of corporate bottomfeeders who rely upon svengalis like Limbaff to dupe the ever-gullible NASCAR dads (read: remedial idiots who resent being called remedial idiots) into sucking off his tailpipe when they aren’t giving him a reach-around.
These morons are willing to believe anybody who feeds them any crap as long as it gives them the opportunity to take a swipe back at those they love to hate most….those stuck-up, intellectually snobby lefties who have been looking down on these confederate-luvin, rebel wannabes who have been suffering the indignation and humiliation of being proved stupid since 1st grade.
You’ve got 2 types of intelligent Republicans:
1) The intellectual progressives who bailed with Teddy Roosevelt.
2) The criminally insane like Rush who only stick around to exploit the party…and their idiot base.
all the rest cry about faith…because it’s the corner they have been backed into by their own abject stupidity.
…and that’s the tactful version
Your right, the planet will be just fine. It has endured Floods, Meteor impacts, Ice ages and mass extinctions. I guess what you are missing comes down to a simple case of semantics, When we, those on the left (i.e. scientists, archeologists, climatologists etc.) say the Earth is in peril we mean WE HUMANS are in peril. Honestly, I thought that would have been clear to even a fifth grader, but I guess I underestimated the reasoning capabilities of you all on the right (i.e. low browed mouth breathers with the IQ of a gold fish…and Rush Limbaugh).
Second point of fact, If we are wrong about global climate change, and we humans are having no effect on the planets climate, then what’s the harm in the changes being introduced? A little cleaner air and water? Not being a slave to big oil?
However, If you are wrong about our effect on the planet then we all die!
Personally, I’d rather err on the clean air and water side, thank you very much.
global warming…real
anthropogenic global warming…too many external variables to ever come to a conclusion
the end
alzuben @ 26:
Seeing as I’ve said absolutely nothing I think you’re being a little childish. Given the subject matter the word bigots would seem inappropriate unless the building seven comment struck home.
Okay…..let’s just get this out there.
You can be pro environment AND be skeptical about global warming.
I’m all for cutting pollution, cleaning up the air and water, and limiting the waste that we produce, but i’m also skeptical about global warming. I am not a republican, nor am i for big oil or any of that. Being skeptical about global warming does not make me Rush Limbaugh, nor anyone else for that matter.
fearmongering is fearmongering whether it be from the left or the right.
fellow_voyager @ 41:
When something like global warming is so obvious and well documented, what is the difference between being skeptical and apathetic?
Too bad if Republicans understood science, they’d realize that global warming has nothing to do with physics, anyway.
First off, global warming is neither obvious nor well documented.
Let’s see. Many countries experienced the coldest winters they have had in a 100 years. There has been no documented warming since 1998. Two recent peer-reviewed studies (one from USC and one from Institute of Oceanology from the Russian Institute of Sciences) contradict the CO2 = higher temperatures claim.
There is a lot about the climate we know nothing about. and to claim that anyone who disagrees with you is an idiot smacks of hubris.
