Biden: It's About The Supreme Court

McCain's Supreme Court position, in pop-ups

Joe Biden's ability to out straight talk the faux-maverick is definitely an asset for him. He sees what's important right now and isn't afraid to put it plainly.

Biden said U.S. President George W. Bush’s two conservative appointees — Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito — have pushed the nation’s highest court far to the right.

This, Biden charged, has threatened civil liberties and set back efforts to desegregate schools and obtain equal pay for women.

“Other than ending the war in Iraq, the single most significant thing that Barack Obama can do — and I hope I’ll be able to he help him — will be to determine who the next members of the Supreme Court are going to be.”

... During the next four years, Biden said, citing life expectancy estimates, there may be as many as three vacancies on the nine-member court.

“It’s not merely the woman’s right to choose (to have an abortion) which is at stake,” Biden told a mostly female crowd of several hundred people.

“It’s whether or not you are going to be able to have a fair shot at a fair wage,” Biden said. “It’s whether or not you are going to able to demand that you are treated equally in every aspect of your life.”

Those PUMAs who have said they'll support McCain would do well to reflect on Biden's words and McCains.

When National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru asked McCain whether he admires any Supreme Court justice in particular, he answered “of course, Antonin Scalia…I admire how articulate he is, but I also from everything I’ve seen admire Roberts as well.”

People Unable to Manage their Asses

And with any amount of luck, Obama's SCOTUS nominees will overturn that horrendous FISA law that he voted for. Maybe, just maybe, but who can say.

Is this an important issue to working class/independent voters? Ask anyone on the street what the Supreme Court does and you'll get your answer.

We go through this same exercise every four years. Despite the importance of SCOTUS appointments, every exit poll ever taken reveals that it barely registers in the minds of most voters. Why would this year be any different?

They better have it register this time...especially women...really all of us..

Read "The Nine" by Jeffrey Toobin....listed one of the best books of the year..

Wasn't Biden part of the Alito hearing? And wasn't he basically cheering for Alito through his never-ending logorrhea ? Did I miss something here? Is he now complaining about Alito.

Gee, if only someone could have done their f*ing job and blocked that confirmation, huh?

I've been and others have been talking about the ScOTUS factor in the event that republicans win another term in many of the blogs posted here. It's not just the Roe VS Wade issue, it's the corporations vs. the people issue.

I remember Theodore White's "Making of the President" series in the 60's. Someone should now be writing a new book "The Media's Making of the President 2008." I don't remember when I've felt so manipulated, or factually denied by opinionated air heads.
Splinter groups get all the time they want if they're good theater.

A diehard Hillary supporter. Some are rather militant. PUMA stands for "Party Unity My Ass.

Crude but true, my response to angry Hill supporters who threaten to not vote or vote for McCain: Enjoy those back-alley abortions and unequal pay ladies!

Lord help us if McCain wins. I wanna see the rationalization of these puma idiots!!

Down with PUMA!
http://www.nopuma.com

Biden was chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee in 2002.

Biden refused to hear or enter any testimony from numerous UN officils who KNEW Saddam had no WMD's.

So exactly what kind of "change" am I supposed to believe in with him?

If the PUMAs stand there with their arms crossed, brows knitted and the sulk of a six year-old in November, they deserve everything they get. That goes just as well for those still whining about Obama not being "progressive" enough. The SCOTUS issue alone should be enough.

Hillary's speech tonight was a class act and a barn burner, throwing down the gauntlet to those supposed Hillary holdouts (PUMA members in particular), and saying in essence, if you truly believe as I believe, then you MUST support Obama. She was clear, explicit, and to the point. If PUMA actually does consist of disgruntled Hillary supporters, they'll back off. If they don't, then it will become evident that they are nothing more than a collection of GOP moles and shills.

Despite the practical, commen sense talk from Biden, the pro-Hillary supporters will still not vote for Obama. Heck, some even are going to vote for St. McCain, the idiots! How will that help anything? If he's elected and makes more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court and judiciary the Hillary supporters will be crying about not being able to abort their babies or to afford health care.

Hillary into the supreme court and if Obama really has nerve Bill too. That'll do more for the security and freedom of the citizens of the U.S. than anything bush/cheney did.

Gone InSane's yammering about Judicial Activism is nauseating.

You know something? We need to find judges who will restore the Constitution by adhering to the true meaning of the text! These whack job Original Intent jurists are the original judicial activists.

Yeah, I want the Constitution followed! Textually!

I'm sick of "conservative" "strict construction" judges who believe Ninth Amendment means nothing, and can't be followed in any meaningful way! Who believe that rights not enumerated may not be judicially recognized despite the Constitution's MANDATE against such a construction.

I'm sick of the "original intent" jurists who say that the 14th Amendment only prevents racial discrimination despite its obvious and simple text to the contrary!

I'm sick of these judges who think the Fourth Amendment can be whittled away when "national security" demands it!

I'm sick of jurists who say that due process belongs only to citizens when the Constitution says it belongs to "persons."

Yeah, we need the Constitution's true meaning enforced by judges. The ones who consistently ignore it are CONSERVATIVE!

A couple more Scalito's, and it won't matter who we elect. This country will be fucked for decades!

Unless of course, your a mindless authoritarian, christio-fascist, racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic republican goon! In that case, everything will be just peachy.

Incidentally, you can all thank Senator Biden for Scalia, along with EVERY SINGLE ONE of his Democratic colleagues in the Senate who voted to confirm the S.O.B. I guess "it's about the Supreme Court" only when it's time to frighten the voters into supporting your party's nominee.

Karen @ 21:

Gone InSane's yammering about Judicial Activism is nauseating.

Yep! The conservatives lose 1 out of 5 decisions...with progressive issues getting 1 out of 25 going their way...maybe and they say "Judicial Activism".

Funny that. That's like the Patriots calling everyone else cheaters when they lose.

Mc-Rolled!!

Should McCain get to appoint the next Supreme Court Justice a lot more than the "right to choose" will be lost. The grounds for getting Roe vs Wade reversed will be that there is NO right of privacy. Never again will the government need to get a warrant to search your home or wiretap you. And that's just a start since Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Roberts have made it clear that there is NOTHING a President can do that is illegal and that the House, the Senate, and the courts have no power to even engage in oversight of a President during a time of war.
And McCain would make certain that we'll always be at war even if it's only a so called war on terror or marijuana.

When President Obama calls me for advice on nominees, here are the names I'll give him:

Lawrence Lessig
Russ Feingold
Bruce Schneier (don't need to be an attorney to serve)
Stephen Colbert (imagine the dissenting opinions!)

And for non-voting membership:
The Ghost of Louis Brandeis
The Ghost of Theodore Roosevelt

This is the most important thing Obama can do, Biden says? Jesus H. Christ on a Crutch. You've got the middle class shitting blood, the only exports America has left are jobs and bombs, we're piling up debt at the rate of a trillion dollars a year, maybe a third of all the homeowners are looking at mortgage foreclosure, there isn't a farking country on the planet where being an American won't get you spit on, bridges are collapsing, New Orleans ain't rebuilt, there's a giant hole in New York - STILL!, but in Biden's narrow, racist, tin eared, clusterfarked, washington beltway, old millionaire white guy mindset, this is the most important thing Obama can do.

After Biden masturbates for eight years, passing two of the worst - Roberts and Alito like gallstones, and giving a felching smoothy to Clarence Thomas way back when.

Yeah. We'll see what Biden brings. But so far, it's not much. Clueless, out of touch, arrogant and ineffectual. What we all want in a Vice President. All I can hope for is that he isn't the drag on the ticket that Lieberman was.

Here is the part Joe Biden left out of his narrative:

Every psychopathic right wing maniac currently seated on the US Supreme Court was put there with the advice, consent, cooperation and votes of the Democrats in the US Senate. The nomination of every one of those conservative judges could have been blocked if the Dems had the courage of their convictions. Democrats helped make the Supreme Court what it is today, and their complicity cannot be skirted or ignored.

Tens of millions of atheists were ignored in Denver! The Democratic Party

is too cowardly to recognize Americans who put REASON over "faith".

I guess the contributions of people like Mark Twain,Andrew Carnegie,Thomas

Edison, Pat Tilman, George Saros, and Warren Buffett, aren't worth

acknowledging.

America! Get over your atheist phobia!
