Congratulations to Joe Torre

Taking a break from politics for a minute. C&L readers know I'm a huge Yankee fan. I have been one since the 60's when the Yanks were in last place and Mickey Mantle was my hero. Torre winning his division was a big 'Suck on This" to the new generation of Steinbrenner's. They had a huge tribute when the last game was played at Yankee stadium and there wasn't even a mention of what Joe Torre did for this franchise. As long as he was the manager the Yanks won 4 world series titles and played in six World Series while making the playoffs every year of his management. To omit him was a very <corrected> petty gesture and their claims that it was an oversight is ridiculous.

Yankees media relations director Jason Zillo, on behalf of the organization, attempted to squash those thoughts: "A lot of great Yankees weren't mentioned [Sunday]," Zillo said. "There was absolutely no slight intended, and perhaps, looking back, they should have been mentioned."

It just shows the make up of Hank and Hal Steinbrenner. They embarrassed Yankee fans all across the country. I'll always be a Yankee fan. I caught two foul balls and still have Reggie Jackson's ball from 1973, but this new group running the team are losers. Joe Torre is a winner. Good luck.

The Red Sox are still the team to beat, but I'll be rooting for the Angels in that series.

The Brewers rode on the back of CC Sabathia into the playoffs while the Mets were left for dead in the final game of the season for the second straight year. They have so much talent it's shocking to me that they choked again. Santana was brilliant, but was not enough. Injuries are a nightmare in Sports and they couldn't overcome the loss of Billy Wagner. And if George had been running the team, Johan would have been a Yankee this year. The Cubs are the team to beat in the NL, but still have to deal with "the goat."

Update: And this op-ed by Bill Plaschke in the LA Times reads like a plant from the Dodgers front office about Manny:

Re-signing Manny Ramirez would be bad deal for Dodgers

Why couldn't he wait until after the playoffs to attack the player that helped get them there. If you're a Dodger fan send him my regards. bill.plaschke@latimes.com.

Whatever! Torre is a joke and so are the Yankees. NEW YORK SUCKS! The entire east coast is drain on us real americans west of the mississippi.
GO TWINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here, here. Classless move by the Yankees.

As a Cleveland Indians fan, I am glad to see CC do some good (even if it is for another team).

Damn Yankees!!!

Baseball? I know this one. It's the game with the little white ball they hit with a stick, right?

Hey John, that was an Oakland A's homer for Reggie in '73...

I'm hoping for a Phillies' upset in the L over the Cubbies (i would normally be rooting for them).

Clearly a classless act by the classless Hank Steinbrenner.

Indians are a joke Too. Chicago will lose to the suckface Tigers. Then my Twins will beat the Hapless Rays. John Amato's little blog mentions lots of teams, but not the Twins. mmm????. Typical eastcoaster. The twins would and will wipe their ass's with every team he mentioned.

" I’ll always be a Yankee fan. I caught two foul balls and still have Reggie Jackson’s ball from 1973"

You have Jackson's ball while he played for the Oakland A's that year?

I'm not a Yankee fan but Joe Torre is awesome.

John,
We agree on so much. There is one fundamental difference. I despise the yankees and always have. I have however told many fellow SOX fans that in my 30 years watching there have been some real class acts that came out of the bronx. Joe Torre is one of them. This is despicable but it is it really a stretch to think a Steinbrenner would behave this way? Absolutely no class.
Well the good news is the SOX are going into the post season and the yankees aren't. We can all take solace in that.

Love ya John.

Don't see how the sox can be the team to beat. They didn't win their division, we're crushed by the Angels in the season, lost the season series to tampa bay and split the series against Minnesota. The sox can only beat up on the weaker teams; if they get anywhere it'll be an upset to anyone not blinded by the east coast bias.

Hope it comes down to Angels and Tampa Bay, the latter being managed by long time Angels bench coach Joe Maddon.

But then, you guys still owe Garret Anderson an apology for this unnecessarily nasty and confused attack (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/04/11/whats-up-with-garret-anderson/).

The Yankees suck giant cock.

You should have stuck with dragsters, Joe.

Mikey P @ 7 : Wow, I marvel at your in-depth sports knowledge . I just phoned my bookie to bet what's left in the equity on my house on the Twins. Thanks.

Joe Torre is one of the greatest things to happen to baseball. I can say that with some certainty because my father was an ump and a little league coach. I grew up in Western NY, and so I might know a few things about being a Yankees fan.

Three years ago, I moved to Chicago and saw my first Cubs game. I was like a little kid - Wrigley Field is holy ground for sure. I won't even tell you how much I love this team, because I can't believe it yet myself. Fuck the goat - we've got Sweet Lou. It's been a great year, and I'm happy for baseball again.

As a Yankees fan, it's tough watching them go quiet into the night, but it is good that Torre made the playoffs.

However, it's been 100 years. Enough is enough.

Go CUBS!

Joe Effing Torre had a career others dream of.

MVP.
Catcher supreme.
Outfielder.
Hella batsman . . .

Career's as player at top of the game in both leagues, and as a manager.

Joe Torre is not PURE Yankee Blood, but he's as close success wise as anyone could be who didn't play for the Yanks.

And I concur with YOUR every shrill, denigrating and nasty, putrid point shoved up the whazoo's of Steiny and his henchmen.

As Gilliard said, and as much as it pains me to do so as I too loved Teh Yanks (from Babe to Thurmond), I gotta tell Steiny and his evil minions of Mordor, FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCKS! *G*

Amato- I don't think I've mentioned this to you, but we have an 88 year old guy who lives in our facility, lifelong resident of GR, who's also a lifelong Yankees fan. He's pretty sharp, so I write it off to his pinstriped loyalty/delusions that he was still holding out hope for the playoffs. That was this morning. Didn't hurt me much to burst his bubble.

Hey, the guy has been giving me crap about the Tigers all season!

The Cubs are the team to beat in the NL, but still have to deal with “the goat.”

Got a feeling the curse ends this year. This team is much better- and Lou's a much better skipper- than the teams that blew it in '84, '89, and whichever year the Bartman Incident occurred. I like the Cubs, but lost a lot of interest when they pulled the vast majority of their games off of WGN (tv). I can still listen to them in my car, but WGN (radio) doesn't come in in my apartment in W. MI.

lets go mets :(

You can be a Yankees fan if you want, Johnny; nobody's perfect. But this is finally the Cubbies' year! Ninety-nine years ago they won the World Series...I think they about deserve it by now! Wrigley's gonna ROCK!

Joe doesn't give a rat's ass, he'll be playing playoff baseball while the yankees are on the golf course.

sam @ 3:

Here, here. Classless move by the Yankees.

As a Cleveland Indians fan, I am glad to see CC do some good (even if it is for another team).

Yeah, Sam, Sabathia went up to Milwaukee kicking butts and taking names. (1.12 ERA in August!) I wish him the best...

I could not agree more. I am a lifetime Yankee fan (first game was the 5th game of the 1964 World Series.) Torre should never have been humiliated like he was by the Yankees at the end of last season.

Classless act, certainly. Then again, since Steinbrenner's owned them, I can't think of one CLASSY act the Yankees have pulled (at least the management, that is.) I take pleasure in the fact that with all the $ they've dumped into their players' salaries, they are out of the playoff picture.

Now when the Red Sox get beat, it'll be even sweeter. Go Rays!

AOM@19

Nope. 100 years ago! 1908. IIRC, Pirates over the Tigers in '09.

Life-long Dodger blue fan here. I was so mad when I was 14 and my dad chose to take my mom to Game 1 of the '88 World Series--the Kirk Gibson Home Run game--instead of me. GO BLUE! The NL West is the worst division in baseball, but hey, somebody has to win it! I also lived in Wrigleyville in Chicago for years--I studied for my doctoral exams with an Old Style beer in one hand and my notes in the other at Wrigley--so I have a soft spot in my heart for the Cubbies.

Still rooting for the Dodgers in the Divisional Series, though...my dad would disown me if I didn't! :-)

The Bartman year was 2003. As a Cubs fan, I can't forget. However, I have a feeling this is the year the curse ends. The Cubs are clearly the class the of the National League.

On a related note, I'm glad the Brewers got in (I have a lot of friends and family who like them and it's been so long since they've been to the playoff dance) and I love that the Rays are in (they're in and neither NY team is in...you see that and tell me God is not just). All I need is the Twins to beat out the f___ing Pale Hoses for the AL Central title and the playoffs will be perfect.

Go Crew!!!

C.C.-ya in the Playoffs!!!

Thanks for the props John.
The Phillies almost swept the Cubs this year.
(Oh, yeah, they're in the playoffs also).
Wouldn't be surprised if they give the Cubs fits again.

Not sure if anyone can beat the Angels, but that's why they play the games.

....Rooting for the Yankess is like rooting for Mastercard -or ExxonMobil.

Your all delusional. The Twins WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AND WILL WIN THE WORLD SERIES! You can put that on the board. YES! Cubs Suck. They are an N.L. team and the N.L. Does not stand a chance against the AL. My twinkies were 16-2 against the NL.
All this Eastcoast-Chicago-Westcoast B.S. Makes me sick. Twins vs Brewers in the W.S. The Media will Love it.lol

Oh man, don't even get my hopes up. They've had such a great year. I'm trying to hold back, but WHAT A TEAM.

At the risk of alienating the traditional-American-sports enthusiasts here, I've gotta give a shout out to Hull City Tigers, sitting in sixth place (of 20 teams) in the English Premier League(that would be soccer), after defeating Arsenal on the road!

104 years, and Hull City is in the top league of English Football for the first time. Bookies had the Tigers pegged as the team most likely to be relegated at the end of the year, but they're playing very well!

Just sayin'...

This was a very long year if you were a Mariner fan. Like me.

But Joe Torre is a class act, and I grew up in LA, so always will have a soft spot in my heart for the Dodgers. I don't think they get by the Cubs this year, but it was a good run.

My grandfather was a die-hard Pale Hose fan. I think he would have loved to have seen the WS and Cubs duke it out in the series, which, if memory serves, hasn't happened since 1906. And I have many long-suffering Cub fans as friends. I'd like for them to see the Cubbies get a shot at it.

Old enough to read the record books, but not so old that I forget the records!

The Yankees suck. I've seen it for myself. And that shithole stadium of theirs should have been put out of its misery decades ago.

On behalf of Angels fans, I accept your endorsement versus the Red Sox.

OK. Both Metropolitan Los Angeles teams make the play-offs. There's still a shot at both Chicago teams making the play-offs. Tampa Bay made the play-offs.

But neither one of the New York teams made the play-offs. Some would say this is a sign of the coming apocalypse.

PS: Arizona looked good, then looked bad, then looked great, then looked terrible. Kind of like John McCain.

What total BS! I'm a life-long Red Sox fan so I naturally have a lot of, shall we say, animus towards the Yanks. But Joe Torre was always a class act in an often classless organization.

Jason Trillo is a bald-faced liar. This is the latest (and one of the worst) in a long line of slights Torre has endured at the hands of the Steinbrenner family. All were intentional. What for? Joe Torre only ever gave the Yankees his absolute best.

The Yankees have a better record than either AL Central team ; and Yankee Stadium is the most historic stadium in all of rts , not just baseball.

You probably shouldn't have worn a blindfold when you attended the game there........

Doesn't Joe Torre heart Guiliani?

Besides being so stinking rich they didn't even sell naming rights to the new Yankee Stadium, the Steinbrenners are right-wing toads, forcing fans to observe the seventh inning rendition of God Bless America. Nothing says glorious freedom like mandated ceremony.

http://deadspin.com/sports/george-steinbrenner-is-more-american-than-you...

Surprised to see chirpy Twins fans here. I love the Twins too, but you guys are delusional. Even if the White Sox go down tomorrow, they won't win a game in the postseason, much less a series. Not their time yet...

In the late 1980's Joe Torre and Bob Star did many a fine broadcasts for the California Angels. Though I liked Ernie Harwell's slow approach to the play by play announcing for the Detroit Tigers much better. Nobody is as annoying as Vin Scully who just never gives it a break and won't shut his trap.

If by historic you mean "reeks of urine," this is a correct statement.

Hopefully, we get a FREEWAY series this year. Nothing would be better than Joe Torre taking the Dodgers to the World Series as a true "stick it" to the Yankees.

Of course, I'm an Angels fan (have a friend with the organization) but would love to see the Angels win in 7.

Don't know if the Sox are the team to beat this year in the AL; we beat them up pretty bad this year.

The Angels have the pitching and the bats to take it DEEP into the playoffs this year.

And I hope the ChiSox lose. One Sox in the playoffs is more than enough.

The Yankees, have won far more World Series championships (26) than any other major league club and Yankee Stadium has hosted 37 World Series, far more than any other baseball stadium. The Stadium also hosted the major-league All-Star Game four times: 1939, 1960, 1977, and, as part of its curtain call, 2008.

It was also the former home of the New York Giants football team (including the 1958 NFL Championship game between the Colts and Giants , which put the NFL on the US sporting map) , as well as the host of twenty of boxing's most famous fights and three Papal masses.

No other stadium's history is even close ; if Yankee Stadium reeks like urine , all other parks are just buildings of pure shit .........

I imagine you'll be repeating those ancient stats over and over and over during the playoffs.

Meanwhile, jeter and arod will be on the golf course. :o)

the old yankee stadium smells fine. the "urine smell" is the smell of the hatred of others for NYC.

but I'm happy that the smarmy organization that the yankees have become will no longer soil the old stadium.

the new stadium, the one the yanks were supposed to build with their own money - IS A FUCKING HOAX. Bloomberg and the yankees are fleecing the citizens for about #$700Million or more.

No I won't , because their season is over ; there's always next year and with the Yankees' deep pockets , they have a better chance than anyone else of improving in the off-season.

BTW

How many championships have the team you rooted for won ?

Catch up to being less than double-digits behind the Yankees and then try to crow about 1 season.............

Yeah mcmetal, that $209 million yankee payroll really wowed 'em this season.

Just for the record, the Yanks won more games than the Dodgers, but good luck to Joe anyway. Go Rays n Cubs!

Yes, he hit a little ground ball to the first base line and I grabbed it. I got one in the same seat a year before by Jim Spencer...I'm still trying to get Reggie to autograph it for me..lol

When asked to comment on this thread, derek jeter yelled, "FORE!"

Couldn't agree more about Vin Scully. Talk about diarrhea of the mouth! As a "bleeds-orange-and-black" Orioles fan, we had a great - but not that well known - announcer for years: Chuck Thompson. When he was joined in the booth by Brooks Robinson, I used to listen to the games just to enjoy their commentary. O's fans, remember this: "Go to war Miss Agnes, and ain't the beer cold!!"

Never knew what that meant, but Chuck would say that after a great play or Oriols homer.

Wow. I have never heard a comment like that about Vin Scully. I have been a Dodger fan for 50 years. When I was very little I remember my mom and dad going to a Dodger game at the L.A. Coliseum. I stayed at my great grandma's house a couple blocks away. Wow, thanks for making me remember that.
Anyway I live too far away to hear Vin Scully these days and really miss listening to him.

Geez. McMetal, have sour grapes much? So the Yankees didn't make it in this year; no one's saying their history isn't great.

John,

I'm with you on the whole politicizing of baseball. Now you know what we Orioles fans always had to deal with when DC didn't have a team: some asshole President throwing out the first ball of the season - then, of course, the obligatory visit and chit-chat in the broadcast booth.

I've been a Phillies "fan" since I was a little girl - watched many a game with both of my grandfathers and and my Dad; and, I was lucky enough to get to attend one of the games in the 1980 World Series here in Philly.

Professional sports took a wrong turn a while back - the ticket prices and salaries are waaay-y-y-y outta' the ballpark. And, taxpayers should not be forced to pay for extravagant stadia in any city. Like most things in our society, the emphasis is in the wrong place.

I'm gonna' root for the Phillies in the playoffs - but I think Joe Torre was a class act - as a player, and most of the time as a manager. But, I'm a girl, so what do I know about sports...???

FHO@43

In the late 1980’s Joe Torre and Bob Star did many a fine broadcasts for the California Angels. Though I liked Ernie Harwell’s slow approach to the play by play announcing for the Detroit Tigers much better.

Ernie is the gold standard. We Tigers fans like to think ourselves amongst the sharpest when it comes to the history of the game, and Ernie was our professor. I can't even begin to count how many tidbits of lore that are tucked away in my brain were planted by that man.

I've got to give props, also, to the late Jack Brickhouse, who, unlike his overrated successor in the Cubs booth, didn't attempt to divert the attention from the game to himself. Brickhouse painted the picture using the least amount of words or hype.

McMetal,

My, my, you are rather sensitive for a Yankees fan. Surely you've heard such things shouted at Yankee Stadium, usually by Yankee fans toward other players (or Yankees who weren't playing well, or Steinbrenner himself.)

Go be a crybaby elsewhere if you can't take some coarse comments in stride. There are far more people on this thread who have insightful comments and memories than those with nothing more to say than crude postings.

And making just such a crude comment about the state in which I live shows you for nothing more than one of those folks. Just as there many wonderful things about NY, there are many wonderful things about Texas. You just have to put your ignorance and biases aside to see them.

Hey all you Cubs fans -

Go to Youtube and search "A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request" by songwrtier Steve Goodman. It was made shortly before his death (apparently) and brought a tear to my eye - and I'm not a Cubs fan!

It's a beautiful, touching song that will hit you right in the heart.

"Little bit different playing in the AL than the National league……."
That's Correct, MCMetal; In the NL, you can't just buy the other teams best hitters and pitchers and all-stars every year and expect to compete every year. In the NL, you need to get the right guys for the job, hire a manager who has some insight and intuition, and play it game by game, inning by inning.
Sorta' like the way Tampa did it this year (Go look at the Scoreboard) how ya doin??

It seems the steinbrenner brothers logic is: "Throw money at it, and it will fix itself... Where have we heard that before...????? Enjoy your post-season.
To end up in 3rd place with That payroll??? How embarrassing!!!

….Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for Visa/Mastercard, or ExxonMobil.

Geez, I'm a huge Twins fan, but people getting all bent out of shape about their teams is ridiculous. Like any of their players give a shit about the fans. It's all about getting paid. I'm reminded of the shirt that's available at the Onion store "The sports team from my town is superior to the sports team from your town." It's just not worth getting worked up about. Except for the f***ing Red Sox. I hate the f***ing Red Sox.

I saw Rod Carew steal home at The Corner. I was at the game where Steve Lyons dropped his pants, too, though my view of the incident was blocked by Dan Petry arguing the "safe" call with the ump. And I got to attend the last game at Tiger Stadium, too.

Oh, yeah, Steve Garvey almost decapitated my dad with a foul ball in Vero Beach, too. Beer saved the day. Dad was bending down to pick up the half-full cup at his feet. *THWAP* Ball caromed off the back of the folding chair before I could react and reach for it.

It's too bad you limit yourself to stereotypes and your own ignorant biases. (If I did the same, I'd assume that all New Yorkers were rude and pushy, but that's never been my experience in the Big Apple.)

But keep posting; your ignorance and stupid comments are quite entertaining.

Captain Bitter Angry Kangaroo @ 63:

. . . .
Yeah, I have my memories of Koufax and Drysdale. . . .

Sandy Koufax IMHO was in his prime the greatest ever.

As a preteen, barely, I saw him defeat Marichal in SF. At Candlestick.

That was a LONG time ago, but he could curve ya and spot his lefty fastball (think two seam MOVING fastball) to kill lefty's, righty's and the best hitters in the National League. Sandy Koufax was one of the greatest, it's a shame he took so long to find control, and then it's a shame he had to leave the game due to his elbow.

But for a period, he was the best. Ever. I don't think anyone, ever, was that good in that period of time . . . no one.

Not even Cy Young or Bob Phreakin Feller.

Sandy was Teh Hoss! *G*

Matt

Your "open mind" should be closed down due to a lack of inventory.

I'm a musician , chucklehead , and have been to all 50 states multiple times ; so can your nonsensical crap in thinking someone is just talking because of any type of area bias , or that you're somehow well-traveled and I'm some sort of hermit.

You shouldn't post idiotic comments on others whom you know absolutely nothing about , nor anything they've seen or the places that they've been .

You assuming that everyone is a specific way shows your incredibly limited dealings with others and your narrow viewpoint ; people are allowed to like or not like what they choose.

It isn't up to a delusionally arrogant nitwit on line to determine that.

Keep posting ; the unintended hilarity and zaniness as a result of your astounding ignorance is quite amusing.............

As a Red Sox fan, I always liked Torre. He seemed like a nice guy and made disliking the Yankees somewhat diffulcult. As much as my Red Sox friends complained of the senior Steinbrenner in years past , I usually countered with ' I wish the Sox had and owner who wanted to win and backed it up as much as Steinbrenner'.The tables turned with the new Sox ownership, then almost on cue, the Yankees suffered and ownership/leadership debacle, and out of nowhere, step forward the =long lost sons=....Hank & Hal.
Hank and Hal, I suspect will be the great equalizer, for the red sox and the rest of baseball, ensuring the new Stadium and its abilitity to almost print money, will be kept in check for the rest of baseball.
Kinda like republicans managing to lose , war against people using 50 year old rifles and home made bombs. History will not be kind to modern american generals ,politicians, supposeded leaders,
So far same for Hank and Hal.

I agree about the Torre stuff. Right on, there.

Root for who you want, obviously, but beating the Angels in the playoffs has become practically a yearly tradition around here.

You got one thing right on that score too. Red Sox= The Team To Beat!
Defending champs, after all.

eff the bums

my lowly giants just won 3 straight series from those losers

they won a terrible division, thanks to the dbacks totally imploding

torre spent most of the year fighting to keep the kids out of the lineup...he is not a good manager

and tim lincecum will win the cy young...for he is a mini god

New York 911? Please send a WAAAAAAHHHHHHmbulance to McMetal's address. The Yankees aren't in the playoffs this year, and he's going to hurt himself stamping his widdle feet and pouting so hard!!

Good night, asshole!

Seeing guys like mcmetal whining endlessly makes the yankee-less post-season that much sweeter.

Crap in Texas

Good night shitstain.

Dial 4-1-1 and ask information for McStupid's # , so he can advise you on how to clean yourself up after shitting yourself................

Spot on, sooth Hussein. I'd egg him on some more, but I need to go to bed. Good night.

Seeing someone like sooth sayer try to brag before his team gets knocked out of the 1st round is quite satisfying , because the likelihood of him showing as soon as his team gets their ass kicked is equivalent to Cheney making a public statement on all the law breaking of this administration.........

Oh Yeah, Them Too @ 28:

Thanks for the props John.
The Phillies almost swept the Cubs this year.
(Oh, yeah, they're in the playoffs also).
Wouldn't be surprised if they give the Cubs fits again.

Not sure if anyone can beat the Angels, but that's why they play the games.

....Rooting for the Yankess is like rooting for Mastercard -or ExxonMobil.

Hey Crap from Texas

Egg me on to what ?

You're the one who interjected about posts that didn't ask your opinion on anything , and then you complained like a little mary that I was "crying" , and that I shouldn't haveanything to say ; get over it and over yourself , nitwit.

As a Red Sox fan, I like Joe Torre, and I'm glad he's no longer in NY. The Steinbrenners showed their true colors by kicking him to the curb, and have added further evidence of their limitied grasp of anything beyond the money aspect of baseball by deciding that, tradition, ghosts, and culture be damned, they are going to tear down Yankee Stadium. I've got no love for anything Yankees, but I do appreciate what the Stadium was. Have they announced what the new place will be called? $teinbrenner's Entertainment Complex and Mint, perhaps?

As I said, I like Torre because he's a class guy, but a decent AAA team plus Manny could have won the NL West.
