Rachel is great. She's head-and-shoulders above all the other political commentators because she makes the historical connections--even to small events--that others just can't be bothered with AND she refuses to dumb it down.

I agree. Rachel is a treasure. Given her acumen, style and the depth of her reporting and conversation, I would think so even if she were conservative.
An openly lesbian woman who has refused to compromise the image with which she is comfortable, and has probably overcome considerable prejudice within the broadcasting industry to get where she is now. A PhD in Political Science with an encyclopedic command of her subject, her success is based on merit, and restores a little of my confidence in humanity.

I sent an email to FactCheck.org yesterday urging them to put up a piece about William Ayers and the spew fest that has come from the McCain campaign. Now, I'm sure my email came too late to have anything to do with it, but FactCheck today finally put up a comprehensive debunking of the William Ayers crap:

The great irony about William Ayers is that he basically dodged justice because his case was contaminated by the dirty tricks, break ins, and constitutional violations done by the Nixon Administration. If it wasn't for those corrupt shitheads, Ayers would be in jail and not an issue. That's G Gordon Liddy, Kissinger, Buchanon, Rumsfeld, Cheney.
I am totally opposed to violence, but the Weather Underground was not what we today would call a "terrorist" organization. The took great care to only destroy property not life. The thing of it is i do believe they killed a security guard they did not know would be on the site, which is why i oppose their tactics. They also killed a few of themselves in a bomb making mishap. Is Ayers as bad as they say he is? I don't know. I have very little knowledge of him, but he did change his life's work from advocating destroying the war machine with bombs to helping the poor. So he is not in jail, so what? I can name an entire administration that is not in jail.
There is an excellent movie called, "The Weather Underground" by Sam Green and Bill Siegel. It's an Australian documentary with many interviews with former Weathermen and 60's radicals and their opposition.
I don not advocate violence in any form, but it would be nice to see a few more "radicals" a la the late 60's out there protesting the current wars and the freaks running our government. Don't make us old folks have to go out there again and do it for you.
I have been coming to this blog for valuable information for a long time. I am shocked and dismayed to see advertisements for "Yes on Prop 8" plastered all over it. I thought this was a progressive blog!!! As a gay man who recently married his partner after waiting 17 years to do so, I am extremely disappointed to see this here.

Try to understand that the ads displayed on a website have no relation to the website's views. Someone buys up ad space, and that ad goes up. Websites like C&L are free for all of us because of that system.
Remember, it's the advertiser paying to support C&L, not the other way around. So, let them waste their money.
It's not the site. It is Google ads. The site can not control what goes up on them.
You know, I use adblock here (sorry advertisers and admins!) and I turned it off to see what you meant. I see that some of the ads on here are rather conservative. I laughed. I'm sure C&L does not agree.
I do wonder if they accept hard conservative advertising out of irony, or if there's something else at play. I'm going to guess this issue has been discussed before, but I'm newish to browsing this site and I must've missed it.

betty white is a national treasure. i've never gotten used to the nasty things that come out of that sweet 'grandma's' mouth and it never fails to delight. there are many legends about older female stars that weren't afraid to let their freak flag fly but NO one does it like betty. priceless.

as an aside, i worked with shatner and nimoy on a priceline commercial; word on the set was that if anyone even whispered anything star trekky ('spock', 'live long and prosper' etc.) that nimoy would be OUTTA THERE. what was ironic is that the 'gag' in the spot hinged on his once being 'spock' (and of course, shatner being 'kirk').

Sadly, the military has been integrating church and state within its ranks for a long, long time. It is a patently unconstitutional program, but, as you mention, the so called mainstream media isn't interested in this kind of story. (Unless, I suppose, a celebrity religious minority like Pat Tilman is involved, though even then, there's no in depth coverage.)

It gets a lot better if you register. I'm still not a fan of the new layout, but once you are registered/verified, the whole commenting section functions differently.
I agree with Karen. The old format just seemed easier to use, but it was probably also easier to a-buse. Registering probably goes a long way for filtering out trolls.
