C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Raul Midon

Title: Sunshine
Artist: Raul Midon

Sunshine from State of Mind
Today was the Fall Fest for my oldest's school, the first major fundraiser for the year. Anybody else remember when schools didn't have to fundraise constantly? In any event, big kudos to whomever it was responsible for the music. They played some great stuff, and I took lots of notes of artists I hadn't heard of but really liked, like Raul Midon.

Raul Midon is fabulous and that was just simply outstanding.

Very tasty, Nicole. I had not heard of Mr. Midon previously; thank you for expanding my world so delightfully!

May I return the favor? Here's a monstrously talented guitarist whose instrumentals evoke flavors and textures, from an appearance on the David Letterman show, Ms. Kaki King.

Kaki is truly unique. King (and Midon) will both go far in the music industry with their incredible talent.

Guitarists know about this guy; he is an authentic talent. He hasn't put out an album worthy of his talents, but they're worth getting for the few gems.

Raul had a great star turn on the recent Herbie Hancock documentary, Possibilities (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479409/) playing a fantastic cover of Stevie Wonders'"I Just Called To Say I Love You."

[Other duets with Herbie on that nice doc are Carlos Santana, Sting, Angelique Kidjo, Annie Lennox and Paul Simon, Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Trey Anastasio and Jonny Lang and newcomers Joss Stone, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan.]

Great music tonight!

They always have someone playing music out on the school grounds during the fest--from CDs and loudspeakers.

However, I do try every year to attend Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit, which does attract live talent.

I remember a K-12 schooling with no fund raising at all. We just went to school. That changed dramatically with my daughter & I hate to even think about the identical twin granddaughters. Maybe that's why I liked school, for the most part. I was never a fan of the dumbheads who ran the schools. As Paul Simon said -
When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder
I can think at all

But we had no fundraisers, apparently the country actually gave a damn about the young. Oh, & I attended the UW-Madison for $175 a semester for tuition.

Thanks for the great song.

I posted this song once, a long time ago. Mia Doi Todd is an L.A. Singer/Songwriter. It doesn't have the spectacular guitar work of the featured post. But, it's a poignant and timely song that I've been listening to a lot recently. The lyrics are in the 'more info' box. I hope y'all enjoy it.

I've had State of mind for around 2 years, his new album(been out yr+, I think), World within a World since its release. Appreciate his talent, but enjoy his acoustic, acoustic-accompanied music the most. He's a virtuoso. Clearly, melodically-voiced, soulful lyrics are whats missing on the radio these days. Check Donnie's "Welcome to the Colored section", and Anthony Hamilton's "Ain't nobody Worryin'" for two other strong soulful voices, but accompanied by full bands.

Back in the 80's, I was sort of a "groupie" for a band from Rochester NY called Miché and the Anglos. Miché has been doing a solo acoustic thing since the Anglos broke up. It is reminiscent of what Raul is doing, except Miché goes quite a bit further with the percussive aspect of the guitar (with cardboard, paper and paperclips attached to various parts of the guitar for different "drum" sounds when they are tapped).

Take care,

(off to see Bill Clinton speak later on tonight)
