As a Catholic, we have confession. We are not supposed to participate in the Eucharist if we have not honestly confessed and have that purity of heart.
I think it is important for people to reflect on what they have done, the kind of lives they've led and to privately make amends to God or (if not God then) to themselves.
I also think that false piety and/or false repentence is normally illustrated by the need of a public display, such as the one Joe is participating in above.

I was actually raised in a reformed Jewish environment, but as far as I know, Catholics aren't supposed to get forgiven without genuine repentance and intent to change their ways either. Am I wrong?

Karen, you are absolutely correct. That's why Catholics they call the prayer during confession (now called Sacrament of Reconciliation) the Act of Contrition. You must have a sincere motive to change your ways or you aren't forgiven. As for Sen. Lieberman, I won't even go there.

Palin gets it, too - that is, the reputation for being a race baiter and an inciter to violence.....This is not over for the McCain campaign despite the official statement they slapped into the evening news.
They know this speaks directly to the fact that John McCain is so willing to risk our "national security" that he's actually participating and condoning the heinous race baiting and "incitement to violence" in his rallies.
Palin is damn lucky that this didn't erupt into a race riot during her appearance. She certainly is clueless about what to do once she touches off a tinder box. Palin is in very dangerous terrority right now as americans nationwide ask for her to be prosecuted under the fullest extent of the law for the creation by speech of domestic terrorism at her rally in Florida.
Palin and the McCain camp need to be slapped with a cease and desist order immediately for their dispicable actions.

If our law enforcement officials continue to permit this kind of hideous and "unsafe atmosphere" at public rallies, then it's high time we oust them all from the positions they hold.
Note: Sheriff Michael Scott of Lee county, Florida will now cost the taxpayers of his county the loss of $300,000 for his questionable actions. To imagine that someone would use their law enforcement uniform to encourage such obviously violent reaction in a crowd is beyond imagination. Sheriff Scott is under Federal investigation and should lose his badge along with his reputation.

The Jews have a yearly observation called Rosh Hashanah that's about forgiveness. But rather then pleading for forgiveness from G-d, what they do is apologize and seek forgiveness from those they think they wronged, kinda like My Name Is Earl.
At one time they laid all their sins as a community onto a goat and release him into the wild to carry their sins away from the community, our now proverbial scapegoat.
I think they were the ones that came up with ashes and sackcloth as a way of seeking divine forgiveness. That continues to this day in Roman, Orthodox and Anglican (Episcopal) churches on Ash Wednesday, when one's forehead is marked with the ashes from last years Easter palm fronds.
However, I think the Jews have a superior sense of the fluidity of the terms guilt and forgiveness than most Christians. They believe as other Abrahamic faiths do, that evil is so prevalent, sometimes you have to do things you wouldn't normally, because your own life and security require it. They hope the scales are balanced by what they did right, but they don't presume they've been forgiven, although they may hope for it. I've heard an Anglican priest explain that's what Christianity offers believers that Jews don't. That all are fallible so no one can obey all of God's rules perfectly, which are infallible, so Jesus is needed for forgiveness that's certain.

Having been raised a catholic - I saw the light during the Reagan years and am now an atheist, but I have never seen any positive results from these prayer session. All people get out of it is believing that they have talked to someone who they believe listened, which gives them peace of mind.

In my opinion, Lieberman's biggest hypocrisy is not his selling out of his party (though that is despicable). His biggest sell-out is that of his fellow Jews.
He regularly "pals around with" John Hagee, who is one of the most obnoxiously offensive "Christian" leaders. When he ran with Al Gore, Lieberman fought very little. Joe Lieberman to put it mildly is a scumbag and one of the lowest forms of human specimen in the entire U.S. Congress. I held off saying this even after he beat Ned Lamont in the general election and afterwards. I tried to cut Mr. Lieberman slack and then some more slack. But no more. Mr. Lieberman needs to stop clapping his hands when Palin slams Obama and stop whispering to her to call Obama that "terrorist" word which Lieberman likes to play. Lieberman said similar things about Lamont in 2006, and said he (Lamont) was not ready and that only he-Lieberman knew all that about the Middle East and the "war on terrorism." Lieberman said Washington was too partisan and that Lamont would take his so-called "left-leaning" attitudes and make it worse there.
Lieberman needs to realize that the GOP plays awfullly dirty partisan politics and that its not necessarily a virtue to be "bipartisan" at the expense of throwing your own ideals and values down the drain, just to play Mr. Nice Guy with the Republicans whose military posture has been suckinig the treasury dry for years now. It's about time to stop the bloated military budget from increasing at the negatove-cost overruns that is doinng irreparable economic harm to the United States. The United States needs to start retreating from the war business.
In closing, Lieberman has not only been out for revenge ever since 2006, but, he also seems to have abondoned all of his liberal positions as well, in being the total sellout he is. Lieberman is I am sure in favor of privatizing Social Security even though he had a hissy-fit when called on this issue in the 2006 race with Ned Lamont. The same goes for ANWR, Affirmative Action, and women's reproductive rights.

It is hard any more to say Lieberman supports any issues listed above when he claps his hands behind Palin at rally's and mocks the Democratic Party and Barack Obama. At this point in time, the people are vehemently opposed to the actions of Sarah Palin with her obvious racial baiting at rallies and downright disgusting lies and smears - which have made their rallies "totally dangerous" for american citizens to attend.
I've heard from many of their base how frightened they were at the Palin rally where death threats were hurled while she sat there oblivious to the dangerous, unsafe atmosphere she was intentionally creating with her hate language.
Their rallies will decrease in size - simply because even their base no longer feel safe with their intentional incitement to violence taking place.
