Mike Huckabee would be proud. How can you be anything but disgusted with this sort of misogynistic behavior? This is one of those stories that makes you yell at your tee vee, but I was happy to see that all the Kansans interviewed in this clip were as upset by this as I was. It is a private, religious school and it's not clear if they have a written policy on the matter and it appears school officials aren't commenting.

Fristish?
Next thing you know, they'll be wanting her to be submissive to her husband and stuff.
Some people have to be brought into the 21st century kicking and screaming.
Shag @ 3:
And some people should just be takin out!
Isn't Kathleen Sebelius the governor of Kansas? That's gonna cause those folks some problems, I reckon.
Hey this is America...where all men are created equal...well except for Indians, Blacks or Women. It says so in the Declaration of Independence.
Women have smaller brains. Men's bodies are made for sports.
God made them that way. What's the deal?
Ok fundies I know you enjoy your wallowing in your stupidity but please take note:
There is no god.
You have no authority over anyone period.
Men and woman are exactly the same but for some anatomical differences and that does NOT include a difference in the number of ribs. Morons.
In a perfect world they'd punish people for being this ignorant.
My mom taught a class full of Farsi (Arabic) children and found she had no say or control over what the boys did because they were taught not to listen to women at home.
Yet another way we are becoming more like the terrorists.
i guess in kansas they want their women barefoot in the kitchen, havin children every 10 months......1 month off in between

I'd say We live in a time of Neanderthals... but I hesitate to insult our cave relatives.
KS should ceded from the Union, and move them to Saudi Arabia.... Go take their Intelligent Design and their "beloved" Shirley Phelps elsewhere!!
MargeAggedon @ 8:
That sounds like quite the utopia...
Mike the Canuck @ 10:
Next week they'll pass a law demanding veils for all women, including their Governor. OBL should LOVE Kansas!
Kansas: home of Fred Phelps, these idiots, and in my five solid years of touring as a musician -- the only hotels where they censor the internet.
MargeAggedon @ 8:
In a perfect world, people would not be this ignorant.
And it's not just the fundamentalists causing these kinds of problems. It's the all-too-common notion that faith and religion are worthy of respect innately.
The people in the video are surprised that people could possibly think this way in this day and age? Really? We still say that if this is part of someone's "faith" that we should "respect" it. And most people in this country still extol the Bible, when the Bible actually does advocate a system of morals and norms that values women less than men. Why should it be a surprise that there are some people who take the text of the Bible at its word, and then feel that their faith demands "respect?"
I live in KS/MO and have been to St. Mary's the local non-catholics call people in this branch of (very close to nazi) uber-catholics - fruits. Funny thing too is that this is where Timothy McVeigh spent alot of time before the OKC bombing...
I do believe this makes them eligible for 'faith' funding from the Bush administration. After all, one wouldn't want these ideals, based in twisted fantasy to fade away. The religious fanatics of the US are equally disturbing as any religious freak the world over. And they're all so sure that they're right, they're willing to kill you for not believing their tripe.
gowest272004 @ 13:
You know, if the Saudi theocracy or the Iranian theocracy were Christian instead of Islamic, I would imagine that many American Christians would gladly live there.
And hey, that'd be fine. If a person actually consents to live under a theocracy, more power to him. But, of course, theocrats (except, perhaps, for the Amish) will not be content to have their own small community, where its population does unanimously consent to live under Biblical law. They won't be satisfied until you and I and everyone else lives under Biblical law.
gowest272004 @ 13:
This is one private Catholic school's "policy" -- not an entire state's. I am a former 6-year resident of Kansas, and lived less than 40 miles from Oskaloosa. Folks in the Sunflower State are not as backwoods as the likes of the fundies living there would have you believe.
As far as your suggestion that Kansas "should ceded [sic] from the Union, and move them [sic] to Saudia Arabia" goes, you would do well to study history, in addition to basic English grammar.
Kansas spilled a lot of blood before and during the Civil War to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.
Why do Amuuuurican Christians Hate GOd :)
just one more example that organized religion is the biggest mind fucker the human race has ever known.
Gotta love that "red state mentality".
OMG!
Amazing how quick many are to trash Kansas in general. Sure, they're the same one's that had their moment with teaching creationism as a science, but I would remind everyone this is, so far, an isolated issue with a regressive church.
St. Mary's Kansas is a weird little town that is not Roman Catholic. These guys were tossed out for being too rigid. In many ways it resembles the Mormon cults in rural Arizona and Utah. It's a very small town run by a really crazy priest. I think there is a predisposition for religious obsessive compulsive disorder there. I'm not sure what all the excitement is about here - Kansas is actually rapidly becoming a "blue" state. You might be surprised if you actually went to Kansas. Lawrence Ks is one of the most progressive little cities in the country - a bit like Madison Wisconsin. I don't live in Ks, but do live about 4 blocks into Missouri. Ks is more progressive than my neighborhood by a long shot.
First of all, these were "boys," not men. And if we're going to be asked to support the basis for the school's decision, does it not follow that mothers have no authority over their sons?
But it was good to see that a sense of fair play and existed outside of the narrow-minded school administration. I presume they are all, or mostly, men. And men will be boys, you know.
Hey, Logan, tomorrow, can we play the caption game with this photo?
Pleeeeeeese?
eLad in MO @ 26:
Tru.dat
Like Logan Murphy's post says: other Kansans aren't even on board with the silly decision.
Referees stick together pretty well. I see a lot of players on that team fouling out the rest of the way.
CalGeorge @ 29:
Condi's got some sisters?
I wonder which ones from that school would have wanted to shake the hand of the greatest Muslim boxer the world has ever seen?
Muhammad Ali
why does this surprise anyone? That's the way the hardcore christofacist's are.
Scott @ 21:
You missed the humorous aspect to my post. I have a very dry sense of humor.
You wouldn't think such rules would still exist. It's clear that there are still areas in our country that are back assward.
This happened in Kansas? That makes sense!
http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/2006/05/the_big_bang.html
Awful to see this sort of sexism going on in
northwestern Pakistaner, northeastern Kansas.Kansas Kansas Kansas...stick it up your knuckle dragging asses!
Now the school will have to cancel games with up to 300 other
schools so it's their loss. What dumb fucks!
"In a perfect world they’d punish people for being this ignorant."
Well, there's karma. And read the Darwin awards, sometimes.
are you serious? there's a woman who referees in the nba.
Not very surprising when you think of it. This huge Evangelical group have managed to eliminate Mary, the supposed mother of jesus, right out of the equation. Funny how they just pick parts they like from a book they think is the real word of the sky-guy.
These people think that women should stay in the kitchen baking pies and pump out a kid once a year and the rest of the time just STFU.
Thank you religious idiots for exposing yourself to the world as a brand of ignorant has beens caught in the act of falling into the past.
Get over yourselves, you people are no holier than my socks.
Why do American christians have pussy?
If it wasn't for women, they would just be a puddle of jism on the floor...
PinkyLeftBrain @ 43:
(Damn spell checker...)
Some may call this "Freedom of Religion".
Others may call this "Freedom of Expression".
I call it "Christo-fascism".
But that's just me.
There is a church of Christ in my town that actually puts their Pastor in their commercials to say, "The Bi-ya-ble says that a WOman shall niiiiiither teach nor lead a mayan. Come to (such and such) church of Christ, where WOmen neither lead nor teach!" Wow, in 2008, whodathunkit?
I wonder what she's going to do with the settlement Money$?
this is so non-news and un-important
I guess the kids' moms don't have any say in their households either, eh?
Bangkok Bob @ 41:
Remember that Mary also was supposed to be a virgin, untouched by her own husband!? I wonder ... did the Holy Ghost have a cigarrette afterwards? Did he have it in for the Holy Father?

Shag @ 33 Says:
Some people have to be brought into the 21st century kicking and screaming
True, but first they must be brought kicking and screaming into the 20th Century.
Kansas would seem to be a magnet for imbeciles.
Go Rev. Huck your plan is working get those woman back in the kitchen and the bedroom and make them submissive. If a woman can't be a referee for males, Hillary has no chance at being President and forget about a Black President Mr. Obama. This shows what the US is really about and not the fake show of how much Americans are equal. I see no problem as for 60 years I haven't had equal rights in the country I was born because my skin is dark, yes some tried to bring equality like John Kennedy and Bill Clinton but I guess something is better then nothing. I listen to the racist comments today and see how far backward we're going.
# 47 There will be no lawsuit as the new Attorney General will knock it down remember we have the Bush/Cheney law in effect, as only those chosen GOP people can do crime and file lawsuits in the United States now.
marko @ 54:
I guess the kids' moms don't have any say in their households either, eh?
the "cancer" stage of unregulated captialism...
That school sounds like a bastion of republicanism to me.
Shag @ 3:
Hell, I'd be happy if we could drag some of these people into the 19th Century.
"this is so non-news and un-important" -- yuh, sez you.
Bwa ha ha.
Looky here -- Talibangelicals in NY State who fired a senior sunday school teacher for being -- female!
They're coming for you.
America is so "evolved" that its backward and socially regressive, in addition to being sexually retarded/repressive.
Americans have a long way to go in more ways than I can count, at this time.
Peter G @ 59:
What makes you think that?
curtilingus @ 9:
Uhm, last I checked Farsi was the language of non-Arab Iran.
Robert
Mike @ 60:
Maybe they're all just dyslexic and think it's the 12th century.
Thank-you for posting this. Unbelievable, non? This school has taken it upon themselves to have a school policy which violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Question: Do you think they have even heard of the Civil Rights Act?
Suggestion: Before becoming a school board member, you have to pass a test showing that you have basic knowledge of U.S. history, that you at least know that there is a Constitution that provides the legal framework for our country's laws, and that you understand the difference between a religious belief and a scientifically based theory.
If you've never seen this one then I can highly recomend it as an informative 7 minutes of history, and probabbly something the obama swiftboaters will be using.
By Any Means Necessary
PatrickD @ 53:
I am a fan of French life and society and do not find it very mature to witness your bashing of France. France is a beautiful country with gorgeous architecture and rich history. In recent polls, the French people, in comparison to Americans are more happy with their status in life and with their government, whereas, Americans are LESS happy with their status in life and LESS satisfied with their government's policies.
The French have a much more open and toleratant society on average than the United States and do not suffer from such awful sexual repression not suffers a socially regressive society due to religious intolerance, bigotry, and hatred of other nation's based on the truth.
One last thing----The French government did not buy into the lies and fraud of the Bush administration's case for the war on Iraq in March, 2003. The American people should wish they had leaders as honest as former President Jacques Chirac and the former France Ambassador to the UN, Dominique de Villepin, who were able to call the Bush administration on its flimsy proof to invade Iraq that Colin Powell brought to the U.N.
It is time to say the government of France outsmarted the Bush administration in 2003 and did not buy into such outright and premeditated lies to bring about an illegal war on Iraq.
When will Americans grow up and stop their childish bashing of the French people and the nation of France?
And you wonder why America is hated in the world? It is this kind of talk of why America is not well received throughout the world.
Linda @ 66:
they are a private school that takes no federal or state monies....do they have to abide by titles 7-9?
and lets say they have a strict policy regarding seperation of the sexes...as many orthodox jews do....would you guys still be blasting them?
lets say the administrator spoke out of turn....it appears he did as they forfeited a football game where a female was on the opposing team
it is possible that they dont see women as inferior...they just believe that there should be no physical contact between the sexes outside of marriage
Don't think that the St. Mary's Academy is representative of Kansas at all. (In fact, many of their students come from throughout the United States.) Most Kansans think that the people associated with this group are religious freaks. This schismatic group disavows all the reforms of the Roman Catholic Church since the 1960s and have invented their own theology.
For those that take delight in calling all Kansans fundamentalist hicks, consider that our two-term governor, Kathleen Sebelius, is a Democrat, and gave the Democratic response to the 2008 State of the Union speech. Two of our four U. S. representatives are also Democrats. (One of them is Nancy Boyda, who represents the district which contains St. Mary's.) Huckabee may have won the Kansas Republican caucus, but he received less than 1/2 the number of votes that Obama received in winning the Democratic caucus. The Democratic caucus was held on a Tuesday night during a blizzard, while the Republican caucus was held on a warm, sunny Saturday morning. Over twice as many Democrats participated as Republicans.
Wait... this is a Catholic school??? Women can't have authority over males they say? I wish somebody had told Sr. Rose who used to whack us (boys) around the place with a clothes brush. Things have changed a lot in the R. Catholic Church in the last 30 years apparently. I think they've been drinking the right wing Christian (there's a contradiction in terms) kool-aid... by the gallon.
woa, you guys need to read up on the sect of catholocism that this school belongs to
the society of st pius X
most catholics dont really dig them
uncle joe mccarthy @ 69:
Silly blockquotes. The response to "uncle joe mccarthy", 69, is as follows,
This is not a question about whether they have a right to believe as they wish, and then act according to those beliefs. Will have that right to a reasonable degree. The question is about how much deference should be paid by society at large to groups with belief systems that are discriminatory. If they want to participate in society at large, they should conform to us, not the other way around.
Obviously, every one in a while, a situation arises where society is wrong and the minority is right. I do not think this is one of those occasions. You want to play basketball with the civilized world, you act like a civilized school. The end.
so according to the rationale, women can't be teachers or even mothers???
And if the same shit happened in a Muslim school anywhere in the U.S., the silence here would be deafening.
Jeff @ 75:
No, they can give birth, they just can't discipline the boys.
Damn! More unruly kids, and by church decree.
proud athest @ 73:
ummm....what is not civilized about not wishing for the sexes to mix physically in arena's outside of marriage?
KansasCityFaGt @ 76:
i would like to welcome our first redstate visitor for the night
thanks for adding absolutely nothing to the discussion except your deep seated hatred against liberals and moslims
and no, i think that if a moslem team refused to participate because of a female ref...people here would also be upset
but you keep trying
proud athest @ 74:
not sure if you saw my other response, but what is not civil in regards to seperating the sexes in certain circumstances
i couldnt tell anything from this schools website or their order's website...but is it possible that if they hold of no physical contact between the sexes outside of marriage, that allowances should be made?
That is an interesting way to turn the argument in your favor "uncle joe mccarthy". But this is not about whether they should have the right to live as they see fit. It is about forcing a woman referee in a neutral setting to step down due to their own discriminatory beliefs.
If this was an issue not about sex, but about race, how would your argument go then? I would like to hear this.
Any chance we could sell this useless state with its useless people off and pay off some debts? Don't need Kansas. Don't want Kansas. Ignorant Neanderthals. They are a state and a people that add nothing to mankind.
uncle joe mccarthy @ 79:
Umm, what happened when a Danish newspaper printed a cartoon of Muhammad? Virtually every newspaper in the America refused to print the cartoon for fear of reprisal. The silence was deafening. That is a perfect example of how showing deference to a ridiculous creed is harmful to democracy and our values.
CoIntelPro @ 45:
---------------
It is just you. Your intolerance is showing.
proud athest @ 81:
i would have no argument whatsoever
however, if the league rules state that both teams must accept the referees provided...i again have no argument
as was noted above, st mary's forfeited a football game rather than play against a team with a female member...so in that case they accepted the consequences of their beliefs
however, if the leauge does not have a rule in regards to which referees are used, then accomidations should be made
and look, i have no love for st marys or the sect they belong to
it appears that 30 years ago, when the land was to be sold by the kato org to job corps, the people in the area rose up and somehow talked kato into donating the property to the school and church
so a jobs program was killed for another catholic school....that aint cool
and the sect has some pretty wacky ideas which include some that are pretty anti semetic
im just playing a bit of devils advocate in regards to this one issue
> however, if the league rules state that both teams must accept the referees provided…i again have no argument
Again, why should we show deference to a sexist bunch of a**holes? Thankfully, I do not think many people feel it necessary to make concessions such as these.
> however, if the leauge does not have a rule in regards to which referees are used, then accomidations should be made
Maybe they can request she wear a burqa too. Seems just as reasonable.
> im just playing a bit of devils advocate in regards to this one issue
I do not mind. I am sure there are others who would argue the same as you.
